how many spider-free sessions do i get after the bribe of hot lesbian

@bobble (:

haha we're in danger

We pick up our scene in Dr. Terrence Antonelli's double-locked office, after the good doctor has exited, and Alex has made an... alarming discovery:
Feb 24 at 21:02, by Mithical
WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP

@Sciborg from spiders or lesbian bribes?

6:03 PM
"Alex? What's that?"

@bobble didn't you leave the office? :p

did I?
oops

I don't think so
Last I see, Darrion was listening for spider sounds. On that count, make a Listen check.

18 < 29 = Listen

Brune doesn't look at Alex; his expression has gone terse and cold, unmoving, as he contemplates the eerie black stone on the floor of the office. His steady surgeon's hands are trembling on his wheels. "We need to get away from this place," he says, in a flat, forcibly emotionless voice. "We don't understand half of what we're up against. He does."

6:06 PM
I was with Doc, who could see where Alex was, I think

@bobble You hear nothing. Outside of the office is complete silence.

Without waiting for any further discussion or agreement, Brune starts rolling rapidly out of the room and into the hallway, at a brisk pace.

"Also, I don't hear any spi-" stutters "-i-i-ders"

@Sciborg Jack follows as swiftly as his big frame will allow him

Outside of the office, all is silent. There is no sign of Antonelli or anyone else.
What's Alex doing, @Ginger?

6:10 PM
Alex, wordlessly, hands the paper to Darrion
They look significantly more rattled than their standard baseline of rattledness

Darrion takes one look at the paper and jumps like the floor turned to lava. Upon landing, he tries with only partial success to steady his breathing, then wordlessly moves to shove the paper at Doc's face

@Ginger This sounds like a good time to ask for an Intelligence check.

"Doc, buddy, pal, I think we need to get outta here"

Brune pushes the paper away, uncharacteristically. He swivels and rolls swiftly back towards the way they came with forceful, rapid pushes on the wheels, trembling, not even looking to see if the others are following him. His voice is utterly monotone, speaking rapidly. "I cannot do this. I cannot. I should never have allowed myself this. To deserve companionship is a privilege I no longer have any right to possess. You were all placed in danger because of my selfish desire to be forgiven."

ah, there it is...
just a second, I don't anticipate this ending well

6:12 PM
The jump messed up some of the lines of Darrion's clothes, so he now takes a moment to smooth them out again, re-tucking and straightening.

Jack is craning his neck to look over the shoulders of Doc, Alex and Darrion but he can't quite see for himself

"Doc. Doc. Doc!"

ayup: 48 < 70
that's it for me

"What in blazes has gotten into you Doc? Doc!" Jack bellows

"I am no use to any of you!" Brune barks back. His face is white and sheened with sweat; there is panic growing in his eyes. "I am a monster! The Rivaille grasps for me because it knows what I am!"

6:14 PM
@Ginger You suffer a loss of 1d6 Sanity points. Also, please roll 1d10 to determine the length of your Temporary Insanity.

just a sec

I'm going to DM you some instructions on your Temporary Insanity.

Brune's chest is heaving with the rapid gasps of a panic attack. He swivels back and resumes vigorously rolling away, tears in his eyes, not looking back.

"What was on that paper Darrion? Alex?!"

2 on d6 roll, 7 on d10
my PDF editor crashed :)

6:17 PM
Darrion slides to block Brune's retreat. "You saying that proves you care. Caring proves you are human." He musses his hair, eyes darting wildly, then summons something from a poster "You have inherent value no matter what because you are human"

@Ginger That's a loss of two Sanity points, and your bout of Temporary Insanity lasts for the next seven hours.

Alex, almost subconsciously, licks their lips. A slight grin tugs at the corners of their mouth.

"Doc, I'm a blasted grad student. Alex does computers. Jack... We need you because you're the one of us - us who got them dreams - who knows how to fix people."
[if Darri goes too awkwardly monology/this doesn't make sense for me to say, shut me up]

Wordlessly, they shove past Darrion out of the office and stare intently down the hall at Brune's retreating wheelchair

Brune slows to a stop, shaking badly, his breath coming in tight gasps. "Darrion," he says, strained; he seems unable to muster the strength to push past him. Then, after a painful pause: "Lad." Another pause. "I can't..."

6:21 PM
"Doc, I need you.. we need you. I'll be damned if we'll let you give up,"
Jack crouches to also block Brune's way and grips his shoulders and locks eyes with him
"Stay with us!"

Alex digs through their pockets for a granola bar they seem to remember grabbing yesterday morning

"...now, did you read the news today? ...They say the danger's gone away..."

Brune looks up at Jack for a moment with an expression of immense agony, as if fighting an intense internal battle, and then some part of him seems to prevail and he wordlessly sags in the chair as if all the fire and fight has abruptly drained out of him. "Out," he murmurs, weakly. "Let's get out of here."

[how long till lab meeting?]
"Let's." Darrion nods.

@bobble A little over an hour left.

6:25 PM
Brune nods, dimly, and reaches out without really looking, as if doing it in a trance, and quietly grips Darrion's arm.

"Doc, would you mind if I helped?" And Jack positions himself to push the chair

Brune nods again, in silent acceptance.

"Want to go to campus? There's some pretty planters near lab, wait for the meeting?"

Alex is farther down the hallway, behind the other three

Jack pushes the wheelchair with Doc in it as quickly as he can towards the exit

6:27 PM
Brune mumbles something that sounds like a "yes." He looks vaguely in Alex's direction.

"Alex? You coming?"

@AncientSwordRage You pass quickly through the empty halls, going by Brune's office, meeting nobody along the way.

"Oh... yeah, let's- let's leave, how about"

"Let's go!"

You reach the door to the hospital. Outside, a heavy fog has gathered. The secretary is not at the front desk.

6:29 PM
"Where's --?"

"We're going!"

Brune seems to not be able to muster any coherent words; he has slumped in the chair in defeat and is merely allowing himself to be pushed wherever Jack wants to take him.

Alex is still trailing some distance behind the other three

"Alex," Jack barks, "Keep up! Hustle"

... is the parking lot normal?
Darrion tries to sooth himself with the rhythm of the group's sounds of walking - shoes hitting the floor, a slight dinging from the wheelchair when it hits an uneven spot.

6:34 PM
Outside, aside from the fog, everything appears normal - there are still cars in the lot. You can't see very far past the lot due to the fog.

Something in Brune seems to stir to life again at the vague feeling that Darrion needs comfort, and he murmurs in a weak attempt at humor, "I don't think Mr. Rivers's vehicle has many spiders in it, Mr. Darrion."

Darrion's eyes saucer for a moment and then return to their normal size. "... yes, prolly"

Jack, who until now has just been going out and away, turns sharply to aim towards his car, "Car, yes.."

Alex, do you follow the rest to the car?

"All. Tick. E. Ty. Boo." Darrion carefully pronounces each syllable

6:37 PM
"Tickety-boo," Brune mumbles, still seeming to be in some kind of disassociative state, and gently squeezes Darrion's arm.
He looks back. "Is Alex all right?"

Alex emerges from the hospital doors with a distinctly not-all-there expression

"Darrion, take the wheels" and Jack turns back to grab Alex, "Come on Alex!"

"Sorry, I'm coming... was it this humid out here when we went in?"

"Just here, just here." Darrion gets Doc to the door of the car, reconsiders, backs up a bit, then opens the door again before pushing the chair closer. "This good?"

Jack clicks the remote door unlock on the key fob, grips Alex on the shoulder and marches them back to the car

6:42 PM
Alex comes along unresistingly

When Jack and Alex get back to the car, he says "I don't like the look of this fog"
(@Mithical can Jack roll something like nature/weather/occult to figure out what's up with the weather?)

Brune hauls himself into the car, with some effort, and strains to fasten his seatbelt. He stops and stares at the seatbelt for a long moment, as if unable to comprehend its purpose, and then resumes struggling. "I don't recall it being foggy when we arrived," he says, in a more normal voice, suddenly seeming to come back to himself a little.

"Where are we going? Lunch?"

Jack, as you begin to drive everyone towards the campus, I'm going to need a Drive check due to the fog. Anyone can make an Occult check of Extreme difficulty or a Cthulhu check to figure out what's up with the fog.

I'm very angry that I just missed my skill cutoff. 12 Occult against 11.

6:46 PM
@Mithical 21 Vs 20 (fail) - can I push it by driving cautiously?

"There might be a company tabling in the lab building, it is lunch. But also weekend, so prolly not"
46 > 5 = Occult

@AncientSwordRage Sure. You can either roll again, or you'll be going at a pace that Darrion might be late for the meeting.

@Mithical I'll roll again
46> 20 (fail)

34 > 25 (Occult) and 5 (Mythos)

Darrion attempts to remember if there were any flyers for events today that might involve food

6:49 PM
Brune stares out the window at the fog with a melancholy quiet about him, as if he's deep in his thoughts. His mind is full of churning thoughts, a din of noise, and above all the noise in his mind is a single, repetitive sound: Beep. Beep. Beep. Beeep.

"Lunch sounds nice"

51 Vs 5 (Cthulhu Mythos)

The laptop slips out of Alex's grip and thuds to the carpeted floor of the car with slightly more heft than might be expected

(will wait to hear what a fail on drive means)

Also, anyone text Darri since he checked last?

6:50 PM
You find yourselves trundling along down quiet New Rivaille streets, slowly making your way through the fog, carefully avoiding the few other vehicles on the road. After a little while it becomes apparent that somewhere along the line, you must have taken a wrong turn. You find yourselves lost in the fog, driving down unfamiliar streets in New Rivaille.
@bobble Does Darrion check his phone, or are you relying on notifications?

"Damnit, what's with this fog?"

Beeeeep... Brune flinches, as if startled out of a trance. He looks nervously at Jack. "I don't suppose this is a shortcut?"

He'll check his phone now since he's just riding in the car

You appear to have lost cell service entirely.

Jack looks for an appropriate place to turn around, "I can't tell my arse from my elbow in this pea soup"

6:52 PM
Silently, Alex rubs some condensation off the window and squints through the fog, licking the water off their finger.

You turn around, and continue driving. You catch a glimpse of the water off to the side; the fog seems even thicker here.

Brune grips the armrests of the seat tightly. "Something about that fog is giving me a bad feeling, Mr. Rivers."

"No cell service"

"No kidding..." He says to Brune and Darrion

do I see anything?

6:55 PM
Brune's mouth presses into a tight line. His eyes flick anxiously around the windows as if expecting the fog to suddenly close in around them. "Watch for trees," he says.

"Are you thirsty, Alex? I think I have a spare water bottle in here..." Darrion fishes around to see if he remembered to grab another minibottle after the last one was used up

@Ginger Make a Spot Hidden check with a bonus die.
You have another twenty minutes or so of wandering around in the fog before eventually coming to a place you recognize and, the fog thinning slightly, you can make it to the campus at exactly the time that the meeting is supposed to start.

remind me how bonus dice work?

@Ginger Roll the d100 twice (tens place die) and take the smaller result.

(brb one moment, everyone else continue)

6:57 PM
"Drat and double drat. D'yah know how to get there? Conference room 322. I need to run"

@Mithical 14 < 25

Brune's whole body relaxes when the campus comes into view, and his trembling seems to ease. His anxiety about the car trip seemed like a different kind of anxiety than his usual kind, as if something else is fueling it. "I visited once or twice, lad. What does it look like?"

"It's right where the stairs let off." Darrion says distractedly. "Biggest room on the floor, glass walls and all that."

@Ginger During the long drive, in the fog, you're positive you saw shapes... swooping through the sky, almost hidden due to the fog, stopping at one spot high above the road for a few minutes and then swooping on.

7:00 PM
👀

Brune winces at the mention of stairs. "Well, I'll likely slow you down, lad - you've got faster legs than me. Take Alex and I'll meet you there."

"I'll stay with you, Doc", Obvious concern still in his voice

"wuh?"

"There's an elevator by the entrance with four doors." Darrion double-checks his bag so that he's ready to sprint once the car stops

"Then let's hurry. I'm fine." Brune says it stiffly, in an entirely unconvincing voice.

7:03 PM
Brune, remind me, have you met Dr. Bardot before?

The car pulls up and Jack is out and round to get Brune's chair ready in record time

@Mithical In passing, once or twice, while visiting.

(The conference rooms in the building can be reserved for any sort of meeting, so you could have been there for any reason you like)
Darrion books it for the staircase. He'll arrive out of breath and probably in the middle of poor Hirim's presentation.

Brune looks back at the car as they depart, with a strange look on his face. His words echo in his mind: Watch for trees. His eyes flick down to his chair, and he shakes it off.

The campus is a bastion of normalcy in your current state. Students mill around, even in the fog, moving from one building to another, wandering in packs around the grounds, and studying. Something does seem off, but you're all in a rush or otherwise preoccupied, so it only registers as a footnote in the back of your mind for the moment.
Darrion flies down the hall, up the bookcase, and into the conference room. Bursting in, panting, you notice to your surprise that it is in fact Dr. Bardot herself who is standing in front of the room, giving you a stern look as you interrupt whatever she was saying.

7:08 PM
Alex dimly perceives Darrion's urgency, and elects to go find out where they went in the building. After they find a snack.

"Sorry, Dr." Darrion tries to back into a chair along the wall.

Does Alex have any familiarity with this building?

Brune stays close to Jack, glancing over at Alex with bemusement. "Is now truly the time to focus on food?"

"Now is absolutely the time"

@Ginger You've dealt with some IT issues here before. You know that there's a fridge in one of the rooms downstairs that's used for storing drinks and snacks for guest presenters.

7:10 PM
"In fact, every time is a good time, I think" Alex smacks their lips on the k

@Sciborg "What did you mean by watch for the trees?"

"Well... join us when you can." Brune gives them an odd look as he rolls towards the elevator to go join Darrion.

Darrion sweeps his gaze over the room, trying to figure out what was happening. Wasn't Hirim going to present today?

Alex makes a vague wave gesture over their shoulder and looks around for the staircase

"As I was saying, this new project is of, to quote, "paramount importance", and builds on the research that we have been conducting here for the past few semesters. While this shift in priorities may come as a surprise, I am sure that you are extremely qualified and with handle this pivot with professionalism and the utmost competence."

7:13 PM
@AncientSwordRage Brune looks up at Jack quickly with something like a mixture of guilt and embarrassment, as if he didn't mean to let that slip out and doesn't want to discuss it. "I shouldn't have said it. It was entirely not intended as a reflection on your driving capabilities."

did we get a new grant? huh?

"I didn't see any trees, so I figured it were somethin' else...?"

Brune's expression shifts and goes unreadable, and he seems to struggle for words for a moment. "It was a foolish thing to say," he says, at length, deflecting. "We should join Darrion."

@Sciborg "no hold on Doc, that's be enough smoke 'n' mirrors from outside the crew... Group. I need to know what it is."
(brb ~5ish min)

"I will be hand-selecting students for specific lab work and specialized assignments shortly. Please note that due to the volatility of certain substances that we will be working with, any students not specifically authorized by myself will under no circumstances be allowed to interact with certain of the experiments that we will be conducting research upon."

7:17 PM
Darrion fumbles out a notebook and props it on his knees

@AncientSwordRage Brune flushes slightly under the collar - this time seeming to be less of a trauma response and more something like how you would react if someone brought up an embarrassing thing you did in college. He avoids Jack's eyes as the elevator dings open. "I don't like to discuss what put me in a chair, Mr. Rivers," he says, and rolls out into the hallway without waiting for a reply.

"You are still expected to continue with any ongoing long-term experiments that we have ongoing, with no interruption in the regular reports and writeups. These additional projects, while they do take priority, will not be as long-term, and students' involvement will be for no more than several weeks at a time. Are there any questions, my chick-a-dees?"

mute head shake

Brune quietly rolls into the room and tries to position himself toward the back wall, where he won't disrupt the lecture.

"Hirim, you may now begin your regular presentation." Dr. Bardot goes to sit down by the front of the room.
@Sciborg You find yourself next to Darrion, who also squeezed himself into the back.

7:22 PM
Alex is on the bottom floor of the building now, wandering through the cramped corridors

Darrion shoots a thumbs-up at Hirim

Brune gives Darrion a quick look, trying to determine if he's all right and if Dr. Bardot eviscerated him too harshly.

@Ginger You are stopped by someone who you vaguely recognize as a teacher. "Hey, pal, you're the IT guy, no? D'you know why my phone isn't working? I can't seem to make any calls."

(in case anyone is wondering where the name came from: his name was Hiram and then it got bungled in the immigration paperwork. yes i came up with useless backstory for random labmate. fight me.)

"Have you tried turning it off and on again- oh, your phone?"
"That's curious... What happens when you try?" Alex adds "oh, and do you know where the snack fridge is?" as an afterthought

7:25 PM
@Sciborg "oh that's... Oh, right. Yes... Sorry I don't mean to pry."

Hirim stands up and begins his presentation - something about the effects of chlorophyll as they interact with iron in the bloodstream.

Brune tunes out of the lecture after the first five words - which, he thinks with a flicker of amusement, is unusual for someone who paid rigorous attention in medical school - and lets his head fall slightly onto his chest, his eyes sliding half-shut as he ruminates on what Antonelli told them. The black stone swims through his mind. The Rivaille... the island... destroy it... nuclear power plant... His eyes suddenly widen as a connection snaps together. ...nuclear accident...

Darrion's turn to present something will be shortly afterwards, as they go around with every student giving a small update on their ongoing projects.

@Ginger @Mithical pong

...nuclear... Brune's hands clench the armrests in silent shock. ...Antonelli intends to... oh, good Lord.

7:30 PM
Jack is standing outside like a bouncer

@Ginger "It just says I have no service. I've tried restarting it, nothing helped." He points off to a room nearby. "Snack room's in there, but I don't think that'll help with my phone."

"It's not just you, for once; I've been having the same issue. Does the LAN still work?"

@AncientSwordRage You get the odd look from students passing by.
@Ginger You also get an odd look, this look the distinct face of someone who has no clue what you're talking about.

"Uh, sorry. Does the WiFi work, or any computers that are directly connected to the campus network? Cell service doesn't seem to be working for... well, anyone, actually"
As they speak, they move down the hallway towards the aforementioned snacks

Darrion, you notice Brune once again appearing to be distressed next to you. You have about five minutes until your presentation - are you prepared?
@Ginger The teacher hurries after you. "I don't think so, everyone's been complaining about it. People were looking for you to see if you could fix it."

7:35 PM
"I'm flattered, but this issue is beyond even my immense powers"
"Wait, the WiFi doesn't work either?"

"It's worse - the landline isn't even working right now."

"Oh, that's worse than I thought- maybe I can at least fix that. Thanks for telling me"

...Good God, I shouldn't have listened to them. I shouldn't have let them convince me to stay. Brune's gaze flicks over to Darrion, with a haunted look; suddenly all he can picture is Darrion lying in a hospital bed, his heart monitor beeping, and that sound pinging again in his mind makes him tremble. Antonelli was right. The best thing I can do to protect him is to go back where I belong. Why am I staying?

That's extremely concerning, Alex thinks to themself whilst rooting through the fridge
Either today is my unlucky day for service failures, or something malevolent is interfering with telecommunications for the whole city

Hirim finishes his presentation and sits back down. There are a couple ticks of the clock before the next student realizes that they're supposed to give their updates now, and gets up with a hurried scrape of the chair.

7:38 PM
I wonder why Bea sounded so off in her email Jack muses while ignoring the stares from students

...By God, I know why I'm staying. I'm a coward. As always. And I think I deserve them. Some part of me still believes I can be saved. Brune's head falls back down to his chest in silent defeat. Here sits a man with a noose around his neck, deluding himself into believing this can end well for any of us.

@Mithical @bobble

That is what the notebook was for... he's been looking up his notes, sorry.
Doesn't want to talk because that would interrupt and Dr. Bardot doesn't stand interruptions.

Alex slowly walks back up the stairs to the elevator, and jabs at the Up button

The student finishes their updates, and the next student begins. Darrion, you notice Dr. Bardot scanning the room - she has apparently noticed Brune, who apears to be falling asleep in his chair, but hasn't commented on anything.
You're up next.
@Ginger Did you clear out the fridge?

7:43 PM
"My most recent simulations suggest that our prototype inhibitor can successfully bind to abnormal endothelial cells to suppress overproliferation caused by side effects of..." Darrion drones on for a minute about the drug his simulations were for, which was intended to be added to an existing combination with odd side effects, "... which provides a solid theoretical backing for Dr. Ye's proposed clinical trial. Uh, that's all."

I got a handful of granola bars and a bag of chips

@Ginger And you're headed to find Darrion?

Hearing Darrion speak startles Brune back into some semblance of awareness, and he seems to sharpen up and pay close attention, despite having that strange emptiness in his expression again.

@Mithical yup

Did we really go back in time at one point? Jack's musing continues, Maybe that wasn't present day Bea in the email? His face scowling to correctly place the order of events needed for that

7:46 PM
@Ginger You find Jack standing outside of a door, scowling at something. Through a panel in the door you can see Darrion standing in front of the room.

"Hi Jack", Alex says around a mouthful of granola bar

Darrion, the rest of the updates proceed without incident. What's next on the agenda for the meeting?

Dr. Bardot usually asks some variation of "are there any fires requiring my immediate assistance?" and then people start filing out.

"Hullo," Jack says the scowl dropping from his expression, and then noticing the snacks, "Peckish?"

Which would let Doc speak to Dr. Bardot

7:49 PM
Brune does a small, polite doctor clap after Darrion's presentation, with an encouraging, if slightly strained smile.

@AncientSwordRage "Yeah... unaccountably so"
Alex looks around Jack through the panel for an empty seat

@Ginger "...how so?"

Noticing Alex at the door, Brune rolls backwards a little so Alex can slide past him if needed.

"Good question." Alex pushes the door open and slides around the back of the room over to where Darrion and Brune are sitting

Jack enters the room one shoulder at a time, behind Alex

7:53 PM
"Dr. Bardot? About Dr. Antonelli..."

The other students have definitely noticed that other people have entered with Darrion. Around ten minutes later, students start filing out, allowing Darrion and the rest of you to speak with Dr. Bardot.

Brune rolls forward instinctively as Darrion approaches Dr. Bardot, remembering her infamous shortness and wanting to be present as a buffer just in case.

"Before we get to that, Mr. Jenny, will you please explain your tardiness today? I must say that I am somewhat disappointed."

"That would be my fault," Jack rumbles interrupting

Darrion appears to be trying to sink into the ground. "Very sorry, Dr. Bardot, the person driving me here got lost in the fog..."
He tries to duck behind Brune's wheelchair

7:56 PM
Alex is still in the corner, now on their third granola bar

Jack moves forward trying to get the right amount of looming

"The weather was out of our driver's control, Doctor," Brune says, subtly shifting his chair to help shield him. "We were a bit sidetracked. It was not Mr. Jenny's doing."

"I see." Dr. Bardot turns to Jack. "I don't believe we've met before. I'm Dr. Bardot, Darrion's supervisor here, and punctuality is a core value here. I expect better in the future. Now, Mr. Jenny, what was your question?"

Jack nods curtly but remains quiet

"He can explain better" Darrion motions to Brune
(want to save that for next session?)

7:59 PM
(yes please)

(sure!)

(thumbsup)

THAT WAS EPIC!
