@Sciborg is it okay to use the Monster's Manual to get a rough idea of a monster's stats and weaknesses and resistances during combat, or is that cheating?

we call that meta knowledge, external game knowledge can't be used in character.

like in theory yes, you could know every monster, but Lae doesn't know every monster.

and usually i mess with stat blocks anyway :p

I thought it was okay, until I read through one of the Ranger archetypes and it's like "You know everything about the monster" for Monster Slayer and I'm like oop am I not supposed to know?

if it's a monster Lae explicitly knows it's fine, i mean more that you can't externally go like "i know this rare exotic monster out of character and i use this attack accordingly"

when i have you roll Nature checks for new monsters and you roll high, then generally it's okay to be like "okay yeah this monster is weak to [x]"

because then it implies Lae figures it out and it wasn't meta knowledge

i only say this because i've had very annoying players where i start to describe a cool new monster and they immediately go like "OKAY GUYS IT'S WEAK TO COLD AND FIRE AND HAS 78 HP"

and it completely ruins it

Like for example

One might presume zombies are weak to Radiance damage, as well as shadows and attack accordingly

Of course, only shadows are actually weak to radiance

that's fine, yeah. that's all in character reasoning and therefore i don't mind.

it's fun to keep the immersion and be the character and metagaming kinda ruins it

like, when i'm a player in a game, obviously i've DMed so many times that i basically know every monsters. but my character doesn't know every monster, so i try my hardest to reason the way my character would.

sometimes i will give them different weapons and armor too, since i make each individual monster different. because i have worldbuilder's disease, lol

I've found that both men's and women's suit pants have sewn pockets sometimes, it is very annoying
