How can I write batch script to disable window update
What should i search

6:06 AM
@Pie disabling windows update is...
not easy, from a batch script. Just use the Settings app.
But you should really just search for "batch script to disable windows update" or "cmd disable windows update"

6:51 AM
You might need powershell

Bob
7:14 AM
@allquixotic @FarazDurrani Deeeeepends. One major exception is .NET Framework (not Core!) applications that optimise startup time via AOT compilation (using ngen). The MSI installer may invoke ngen as a post-install step, while the ZIP'd version won't be AOT'd so will have a bit of a startup JIT penalty.
But that wouldn't affect native applications at all.

7:39 AM
Morning

Afternoon

7:57 AM
bonjour!
the rain is finally here and it's goooooooooood

u r lucky

yus
yes i am :D
i have a good life.

8:16 AM
morning

Evening

Anyone thinks mechanical keyboard is better than common keyboard?

i have a mechanical one here at work and a high-end normal one at home. i genuinely can't feel the difference

8:35 AM
I like my mechanical at home, but it's a curio rather than anything honestly more useful.

Mechanical keyboards have more keys than common keyboards?
Keys for more in-game functions, in-game shortcuts...

Not necessarily
that's just a function of keyboard models, logictec do lots of keyboards with extra keys, for example

my home keyboard has macro buttons etc

9:16 AM
It's sunny here!
Also, does a keyboard with hammers and a ribbon count as mechanical?

i briefly saw that valve aren't going to support steam on ubuntu any more

yeah, so ubuntu aren't doing what I thought they were, which is dumb
they're actually removing all 32bit libs, as you worried they would
(which is dumb).

it seems like a terrible idea seeing that ubuntu is the most popular linux distro available

yah
it looks very much like a knee jerk reaction, and it's odd there's no announcement (that I've seen, tho i've not looked hard) about why
which makes me wonder, has someone discovered a zero day and only ubuntu knows? ;/

@allquixotic you americans and your crazy number of months

9:30 AM
@Burgi Beats metric.

heh

9:48 AM
hmmmm one of our providers is having some major bgp weirdness atm
They're seemingly ignoring our announcement.

@djsmiley2k I think they just figured it wasn't needed
@Boris_yo Yes
BUT whether you like it varies
@djsmiley2k If memory serves though, there's actually no 32 bit support on 54 bit debian by default. You install a set of packages for that if needed.
I might be wrong though
nvm

10:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek i know linux is crazy but 54 bit machines? ;P

I was hungry

so you ate 10 bits?
a byte and a nybble if you will
that worked rather well, going to take the rest of the day off :)

lol

Bob
11:18 AM
hm
what do people use for defragging drives these days?
got a couple 8 TB SMRs that are ... poorly

better fs's?
/me realises that answer isn't helpful.

@Bob I havn't defragged in ages

Bob
@djsmiley2k sure, find me a FS that doesn't die on SMR
I guess TAR would work :D
@JourneymanGeek Exactly why I need to ask!

wait. mydefrag got updated?

Bob
It's writing at 24 MB/s and I can hear the drive seeking away :(
I think I used to use ... Auslogics?

11:21 AM
mydefrag.net I used to use an older version of this back in the day

Bob
huh, defraggler is still a thing
and they want $25 for it
lolno

11:37 AM
last update on mydefrag was 09 0_0

@JourneymanGeek well windows has it's own utility, and like you said, people rarely ever defrag now, so...

@rahuldottech oh bit of a story behind that

tell me!

on XP, jkdefrag (mydefrag's predecessor) was open source
it was INSANELY light and almost magic
had really good options like letting you compact files, and ran in situations where windows defrag would go nooooopeeeee
and you could pretty much see the difference ionce it ran
the dev went closed source so he could sell it
then...
promply lost interest.

doesn't it happen the other way around, usually?
lost interest > open source?

11:50 AM
yup
If it was usual, it wouldn't be a story
(actually same thing happened with PDN, but they didn't lose interest)

@JourneymanGeek Ah, yeah, I remember that
I generally don't believe that open source and profits are incompatible
But... //shrug

@rahuldottech ah, in this case it wasn't about the money
folks were doing 'forks' with malware

ohh
yeah, that's bad
So I meet this guy at the reddit meetup, super nice and chill, chat a lot during afterparty at my place, we make plans to hang out and then...
turns out he's a redpill-er

On other news: disclose.tv/…
Hmmm idk what to think of this. Sounds... impossible?

12:00 PM
@Bob Do SMRs need special defragging?
out of interest

Bob
@bertieb ...it's more of a "defragging apparently doesn't work on SMR"
:S

@Bob Oh, right
:S indeed!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek PDN?

@Bob paint.net

Bob
ah

12:04 PM
Doesn't work? :/
How can defragging not work o_O?

Bob
@djsmiley2k SMR shenanigans

Gremlins in the shingles

@Bob clearly the solution is to write your own with the defragging API....

ok thats weird
the formula e coverage on the BBC has accidentally manufactured that bi-aural sound
i kept looking around to see where the hell the helicopter was! >.<

12:24 PM
bamboozled.

lol
@Bob sounds interesting...
> and the Social Committee would like to invite you to partake in this month’s dress down competition!

Ooooooooooo boy.

I released new music: theme to the final struggle
@bertieb yeh

@djsmiley2k Perfect. I am in the mood for winding somebody up ;)

It got deleted :/

lol
So teh rain has stopped
at least the world has cooled down

8:02 PM
RasPi 4; now with more ethernet throughput!

lol

8:29 PM
Is there anything that can be done about old, falling-apart speaker cones?
They're probably older than me and this one sounds terribly rattle-y

@bertieb ....
why didn't they take their clothes off first? *(link to ladbible video on youtube of people in scotland swimming in the random flooding around a town)

@djsmiley2k they're my late uncle's old speakers
emphasis on old

wasn't reply to that :D

but they were probably (?) great in their day
and can't argue with price

I thought you could replace speaker cones, but I maybe wrong.

8:36 PM
Oh
@djsmiley2k #juststirlingthings
Or maybe it's in case there wasn't as much lubrication as they thought (paging @FMLCat) and were concerned about road rash??
Maybe I should just disconnect that speaker in the meantime
Also, also!
I was checking on the amp / sound dealie, some Sony somethingorother
For something sitting doing nothing, it gets flipping warm!
If it's generating that much excess heat, I wonder what it's doing to my 'leccy bill

(only useful if you're building an AMD X570 system, though, as there are no other platforms on the market that supports PCIe 4.0)

8:51 PM
@bertieb err
r
yeah, so valves?
like old stereo amp?
the heat sinks in stereos is crazy
and I'm orf to bed o/

nn

@djsmiley2k Naw, it's newish
2000s, I reckon
2 ticks
I mean, I think it has HDMI
Sony has manual downloads for it dating from 2006
I bought it for a reasonable price off Gumtree

oh right
still, massive heatsinks, tho I'd expect it to power down to some low power state when not actually in use o_O

A STR-DA1200ES
Aye
Might stick my energy dealie on it and see

i just recall my old stereo I had as a teen, it must of had 15kg of heatsinks in there

9:05 PM
Only issue is it's hooked up to my server >_<
(no UPS)

and it could sure get hot, but only really from the front display, and from being on long time

Aye, back in the gold ol days
before tiny, tinny, noisy fans
Think I'll be switching it to standby when not in use
Just a slight inconvenience
Like you, I figured it would be doing nothing and consuming v little when not receiving audio

2 hours later…
10:53 PM
alues
@bertieb if you know the size and inductance values could swap em

I thought for a minute you'd been replaced by a fluffy Markov chain script ;-P
Do I need to know size and inductance values?
I kinda just wired in whatever speakers I had into the sound system
an audiophile I am not
(clearly)

Oh size so it fits
I think induction values are fairly standard and so stuff gets driven the way

Oh right :D
It's a large thing on a stand, anything hat wouldn't fit would be ma-hoo-sive
Ah yes

You also kinda want the same 'type' of speakers - tweeters subwoofers etc

I think I can configure inductance on the device dealie
Hmm, I thought speakers these days have both woofers and tweeters

11:02 PM
Yup

I have a separate subwoofer, not sure why as I hate bass

But even on a 2.0 there's more than one speaker and a crossover circuit

nods
Actually sorry, didn't get that :P
I thought 2.0 was a type of speaker configuration
L+R or somesuch

Yup
But you can have a single channel with 2 or more drivers covering different ranges

This sounds way more complicated than what I want to do
...and I think I just had an epiphany as to what normal people must hear when I attempt to explain tech stuff to them

11:09 PM
Just buy drivers of the same size and impedence and you should be fine
@bertieb yup. I know the feeling

Heh; these two (2.0? left and right?) are ones I inherited from my late uncle (big, old, wooden)
The rest of the speakers (5.0) are from a DBD system from the early days of non-enthusiast consumer DVD surround sound
tiny plastic dealies
Somewhere, an audiophile is agog
and Van Gogh-ing their ears in dismay
See, it's almost definitely a crap system (broken cones notwithstanding)
but the price was right...
On that note, eBay postcode+a few miles "collection only" speakers / Gumtree might be a good bet
