@MichaelFrank there are no "file headers" for plain text files; the problem is the lack of the requisite file header for the desired image format

@Nick due to compression algorithms, manually calculating the required bits to write out a valid PNG or JPEG is going to be really painful - I'd suggest starting out with a BMP and if you get that working then maybe look at PNG

pretty reasonable to enter a tiny (up to maybe 4x4) BMP using a hex editor

really since you're creating one from scratch you don't need a hex editor so much as just a shell: echo -n -e '\x42\x4d' > foo.bmp -- just prefix each hex byte with \x

So the schools conduct the ceremony in Jan, after which we aren't required to go to school
