7:00 PM
@allquixotic sorry who are you again? ;)

@gdpr ?

brb

@jokerdino allquixotic :P
hmm, chat is taking a while to update my nick

Can take up to an hour

talk about eventual consistency
I want my house to be eventually consistent when I order a new one to be built.
"Your house is done!"
me walks in and falls through the floor, which then mysteriously fixes itself a few hours later

7:05 PM
man....my chair is coming from CA ...there is no way it will arrive anytime soon unless they put it on a plane!
this sucks
My rear is starting to protest it's current accommodations.....

@Ramhound they are towing it behind the van

my best buy order has a "sign in to view" under my email address...I log into the account and nothing else is displayed. Which means anyone with my order information knows my email address. Just find it funny that some programmer thought it was alright not to test case their code (or they simply dida poor job of doing so)

cant you just disable cache n reload
for the nick

That isn't the point. My email should be part of the information not displayed unless I log into the account (or the link shouldn't be contained in products that are emailed to you) either case they didn't generate a test case for this situation
"Lost in Oz S1, Pt. 2" - Coming Soon vs "Jun. 8: Lost in Oz (Prime Original series) (Season 1B)" wouldn't Season 1B be considered the second part of season 1?

sometimes they do it just to get the project out of the door and plan to fix later

7:20 PM
I am not even a web developer and it seems I have better sense then whom ever wrote the html for this order page :$

maybe it checks your email address in the URL is the same as the one it has stored in the cookie and allows the viewing of the data because you have a valid session cookie?
have you tried in private browsing mode?

It does not display my mailing address, i login, and it displayed it. This is just poor whatever it's called mangement. I forget the term I think it's user view or something like that. Have not touched web developement since college

wow 30 minutes in and verification only 20% complete

I have never experienced a case where Windows wanted to repair itself that was not caused by an HDD that was in the process of failing. If the repair is successful you should replace the HDD immediately.

8:01 PM
haha ok
wait what
i ran sfc
sfc /scannow

Heh, even NVidia driver updates are GDPRified

haha

8:19 PM
lol

@ALinuxLover - You never indicated which version of Windows. SFC really shouldn't be used if you are running Windows 8+ DISM is a much better tool.

8:36 PM
If anyones feeling really generous :D

@Ramhound I have to run sfc & dism whenever I want to install Windows updates. The updates fail if I don't do this. I think it's because of certain software we have installed on our computers.

I have no clue what mouse to get either, if anyone can suggest good ones, ???

I'm not sure which one fixes the problem, but I run both to be safe.

@djsmiley2k bit of a razer fanboy here so...
I actually think mice really depend on the user. I went through a few before I found the 'right' one for me

8:53 PM
@BenN why are your gfx drivers collecting data on you in the first place?

@Bob / @CircusCat Air Disasters, Season 10, Episode 10: Afghan Nightmare. Easily one of the most interesting and nuanced air crash episodes I've ever watched. I was fascinated by it. Pick it up when you can.

9:13 PM
@GDPR Thanks!
... lmao
@GDPR You know the next time I have to tell GDPR to go fuck itself or die in a fire, I won't be able to help but @ you right?

user226528
Why everyone in this room hate GDPR so much?

@GDPR / /@allgdprxotic .... lol

I'm mildly indifferent

@djsmiley2k I've used a M570 Wireless Trackball - Logitech for many years - probably at least 10. I'm on my 2nd IIRC and also have a spare :)

I currently use a razer mamba TE
I was using a taipan before (bit too narrow), and a kone XTD (nearly perfect other than I went through multiple mice that died)

9:24 PM
Is it possible to delete files from my Windows partition when I booted into Linux ( Kali Linux to be exact)?

@JourneymanGeek No trackball. Essential for me to avoid RSI ...

I mounted Windows partition into Kali Linux

understood

user226528
@JANORTS Sure

9:24 PM
"kali linux"
If you need to ask that question, you're not ready.

Is there any risk involved?

user226528
Yeah

lots, a lot of which is behind the keyboard

user226528
^ What this doggy guy said

PICNIC errors etc.

9:26 PM
1. Kali linux is literally designed for one thing.

Is that one thing generating low quality content on SuperUser?

user image
2
er
wrong link

Ah yes

157
A: Why is Kali Linux so hard to set up? Why won't people help me?

AibobotKali Linux is not meant as a general purpose OS. It's meant to be a standardised platform for deploying specific scripts to do various tasks. It's one of these: Very good at what it does. Just not what you need when you want to go grocery shopping. It has a few quirks - being designed as a p...

@JANORTS you should read that.

Good ol Hermescat (?)

9:28 PM
The thing is that I was using Windows 10 and installed Kali Linux next to it but now I cannot boot into Windows anymore. GRUB just doesn't show in the options possibility to boot into Windows.
I was thinking that maybe if I install Ubuntu, GRUB which will be put there after Ubuntu is installed is gonna show me 3 options - Kalin Linux, Ubuntu Linux and Windows 10. So, I have to delete some files on my Windows partition, so that I can create a free space of 25 GB on my HDD and install Ubuntu there...

"nstalled Kali Linux next to it"

Good lord, time for coffee...

.... THERE'S YOUR PROBLEM, right there.

user226528
@JANORTS Whoa! So many wrong things to do after wrong things. Do you want to break a record or something?

why not just blow away kali?

user226528
9:29 PM
Yeah

Yeah, I want

1. Its causing the problem

user226528
@JANORTS Run Windows RE from the Windows Setup disc then

2.You ought to be running it off a live usb or live cd

I want to hack Pentagon, that's why I want to keep Kali in my laptop... ;-)))

9:30 PM
3. You are not ready for kali.
4. You did backup your windows system first right?

user226528
Windows RE will help restore Windows 10 boot loader and help you boot into Windows 10.

I didn't back up Windows

5. You should try to fix your bootloader (and I think you can do that off a windows 10 installer)

Can I create Windows RE bootable USB stick? I have no CDs...

user226528
Yes

9:31 PM
6. You should always back up a system before you do potentially destructive file system changes
7. Cat with a winged hat.

!!s/before you.*//

8. Help. I am talking in bullet points.
2

@bertieb 6. You should always back up a system (source)

@bertieb but if he did, we wouldn't be in this mess.

user226528
9:32 PM
@JANORTS If you have a Windows 10 ISO, download an app called Rufus from Softpedia and use it to write the ISO to a USB flash drive. This will let you run Windows RE off the setup media.

Hah

OK, that sounds good. I used Rufus to create Kali Linux bootable USB stick...
There should be some 30-day trial Windows 10 iso on the internet right?

@JANORTS 90 days IIRC

9:36 PM
@DavidPostill My favourite Linux flowchart:

@JourneymanGeek Not entirely true. You can have a backup, but still want to fix the bootloader because it's much quicker than restoring from backup.

@CircusCat true, but I'd rather tell someone to do the latter than walk them through the former ;)
and backing up means that they took the effort
and thought things through
@JANORTS 9. you can download a full installer disk off of MS's page, and its an ISO if you're not on windows

user226528
@JANORTS When you ask this question, it means you don't have an ISO. So, what I told you earlier is no longer valid. Ditch Rufus and follow the Circus Cat's link to download Media Creator from Microsoft. It will download Windows, update it and write it to your USB flash drive.

@FleetCommand you need windows for that ;)

In fact, even professionally I'd consider "Restore from backup" to be a last resort, used only if the problem cannot be directly fixed in-situ in a reasonable timeframe.

9:39 PM
I can create bootable USB stick in Kali Linux... Once I have Windows ISO file

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Thanks for the ;) at the end.

user226528
@JANORTS Too risky. Don't.

I created Ubuntu bootable USB stick in Kali Linux like 1 hour ago

@CircusCat Depends on the nature of the problem
I'd rather go back to a known good state than a janky duct tape and bailing wire fix
even if its more fun

Assuming your backups aren't janky duct tape and bailing wire.

9:40 PM
Since I cannot boot into Windows, I have to create bootable Windows USB stick in Kali Linux... I have no other choice

user226528
@JANORTS Why? Can't you borrow a friend's computer?

@CircusCat Hey now! I resemble that remark

In my last job I discovered a backup system that was a shell script that remotely ran an rsync that hadn't worked for six months.

(I also love the word 'janky')

@CircusCat er...

9:42 PM
Arguably in that case, it's not actually a working backup, but nonetheless, even when it was working it was janky.

I do full disk images, I've tested, and I have a fairly reliable, and automatic replication system for those...
individual components are reliable, but the glue is ... kinda odd.

I have no friends!
2
This is my problem!
Nobody to borrow a laptop from...

@JANORTS we can tell

I am serious!

user226528
I see.

9:43 PM
you should make some.

I live in a country where it is impossible to make friends

Probably untrue.

Maybe after knowing a person for 50 years
If I could tell the whole truth, you would understand.

user226528
Media Creator is a Windows app but Linux can run Windows app using Wine. If that didn't work, try search Softpedia for information about grabbing genuine Windows ISOs.

It is a country with highest number of people who have no family and no friends and just live alone.

user226528
9:45 PM
Your life would become very miserable if you download a deliberately-infected Windows ISO.

Thank you. I will try it tomorrow. I have to go to sleep now.
I will write a book about the life I am living now one day...

user226528
China...

@FleetCommand the MCT page will give you an ISO on linux or macos
I use user agents to do that, since I prefer to use my disk enclosure (which can mount/emulate an ISO) to do the big windows updates

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Holy c**, that was an invaluable advice. I could kiss you right now. All your past misdeed (if any) are forgiven.

@FleetCommand hah, useful knowledge is free ;)
I usually use edge emulating an ipad for that

user226528
9:50 PM
@JANORTS Please see @JourneymanGeek's last message. Apparently, the Microsoft website gives ISO images when it is opened on a browser on Linux or macOS. Looks like you can download with confidence after all.

> Unfortunately the below-mentioned invoices have not been settled.
As previously communicated, we will have no recourse but to suspend your account
until payment has been made.
Please make sure to remit the amount by 15 June 2018 at the latest, should you wish to
prevent further suspension of your account. In the case of non-payment, your contract with
Hetzner Online will be cancelled and your account will be consigned to our dept collection
agency. Your server will also be removed from our Data Centre.
Oops. I should probably set up automatic billing

10:01 PM
My server bills overdue time is almost as high as my server uptime

Lol

not for long
one way or the other

Got a quick question guys, not something worthy of an actual post.
I'm testing a bash script, and at one point in the script, it removes a symlink. I am trying to bork the symlink removal, but I'm not getting anywhere.

Bork it, as in stop it from happening?

10:14 PM
The symlink is to a file. I'm using rm -f, so if the symlink isn't present, it handles it silently
I want the removal to fail.

@Ungeheuer Test for presence of link and error if not?
I get the feeling this is worthy of a full post

hmmmm I could use some upvotes.
and I dont mind getting downvoted.
RIP my reputation points. I'll make a full post later.
I, Ungeheuer, hereby lay copyright claim to this question discussed above.

I've asked my fair share of 'things which should probably be full questions' in here
In fact, I think my first message in her was something along those lines
But I'm still here

hahahaha

10:37 PM
so... i just learnt the tracking system in TLJ isn't actually a true tracking system and just actually an ultra-clever algorithm that guesses the destinations of fleeing ships
little bit disappointed by that
i suppose we saw a less sophisticated version in TESB

So they weren't tracking them through hyperspace?!

no, they just basically used a neural net to "guess" the resistance's destination
its canon and mentioned in the TLJ cross-sections book
there was basically a tiny percentage chance that they could have got the destination wrong and lost the resistance in hyperspace
perhaps if the resistance had used multiple randomised jumps they might have escaped

Or maybe they shouldn't have been just straight up jumping in a straight line like the movie made it seem.
Mortal Engines trailer is out! :DDD

10:59 PM
@Ungeheuer Don't use -f then.

user226528
11:33 PM
Ay, ay, ay. Some practical jokes are very funny if you weren't admin cleaning the mess.

user226528
One kid has ran PowerGREP on another kid's computer, changing all "cry" into "crap". So, now, his copy of Devil May Crap doesn't run.

user226528
Oh, God, I am in admin hell.

Teach them the shutdown /t 0 disguised as their web browser trick. >:D

user226528
@MichaelFrank I'm not sure if it is my business or not that Devil May Cry has an ESRB rating of R and shouldn't be on a teen's computer.

11:43 PM
If it's DMC: Devil May Cry, the newest one, the ESRB rating is M.

user226528
PowerGREP can change Word documents too, so you can imagine what would Julius Caesar do before letting loose the dogs of war after PowerGREP.

In fact, all of them are M...

user226528
Yeah. ESRB has M instead of R.

In most places I've seen an R rating. It's strictly 18+
From my experience working in retail, ratings are a pain in the ass. Although it was often pretty funny denying someone that was obviously too young to buy an R rated game. Then watching them run over to mum and ask her to come and buy it. Only to deny her as well based on the prior knowledge of who the intended recipient was to be.

user226528
You remind me of one of the trifles surrounding the Coffee fiasco in Grand Theft Auto.

user226528
11:53 PM
Apparently, a granny was filing a lawsuit because she had bought GTA for her teenage grandson, and now wanted Rockstar's head on a platter because of the Coffee fiasco.

user226528
Well... she had a close call because buying that title for a teenager was problematic per original rating anyway.

Does anyone have thoughts on sound.stackexchange.com/q/44401/24842 ?
