I don't understand "too old to migrate".
This question is completely off-topic for Stack Overflow, and completely on-topic for SU:

Q: check md5 of compressed file without unpacking it completely

jdogI want to check the integrity of a backup of a Ubuntu disk, copied with dd onto a Windows share. There is not enough space to unpack the backup. Is there a utility to calculate the md5 of a compressed file without unpacking it completely?

@ThatBrazilianGuy no one can migrate questions older than a certain age
IIRC 6 months

60 days

or that

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, but why?

It's to avoid reputation duplication

1:23 AM
Huh? Aren't the rep migrated when the question is migrated?

@ThatBrazilianGuy second time I've said it today but....

You get to keep rep from posts deleted after 60 days with a score of >3

I think it was...
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 4 hours ago, by Journeyman Geek
and it was one of those "Jeff thought its a good idea" things

So you could conceivably get to keep the rep on both sites

or that, but the keeping the rep on posts deleted after X days... is newer than migration I think?
Could be wrong, lol, these are minutae I can never really remember or bother to look up

1:24 AM
So it's better to have a question in an inappropriate place where it will help less people? FFS!

I think they went back and disabled old migrations later

could be
@ThatBrazilianGuy SO is suprisingly broad with older questions

@BenN Then make it you keep rep, unless it's a migration. Or something saner like that.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That looks like a wonderful dust trap
@BenN @JourneymanGeek @ThatBrazilianGuy IIRC it was explained as not wanting people to go and hunt down a million old questions for migration.

@Bob that makes sense too

Bob
1:41 AM
holy loaded question

2:01 AM
lol
"Well Senator? When did you stop beating your wife?"
(said senator could, however be beating his wife)

2:59 AM
@Bob other than the edge... the design actually is designed to blow off dust
the sandia heatsink was all spinning

3:20 AM
"quasihemidemisemiquaver" is lulzy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundred_twenty-eighth_note

@Bob did the SO serial DV get reversed too?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, at the same time.

ah good

9:39 AM
Ok weird. Was just thinking this morning how I wish that text had a web integration like what'sapp does.... Was going to ask you guys, then it just pops up on my phone now....

oh
new android chat feature no?

seems like it
/me sets it up
wow it's exactly like the whatsapp one
Sure I expected it to be simular
but it's identifit. ;D

Bob
10:02 AM
Hmm
So OVH hasn't replied to my support (server cancellation) ticket in 4 days
But on the plus side their phone support is great
(and the guy had a wonderful Irish accent :D)

I reallyyyyyyy wished that there existed something like Telegram which was not bound to phone numbers

how would you know where to route the messages?
its also called "email"

Bob
welcome to Matrix
@Burgi email isn't quite real-time

neither is matrix
it takes fracking ages to sync

matrix is pretty fast. Its just not efficient.
@rahuldottech jabber, matrix, even IRC
pick your poison ;)

10:09 AM
@Burgi if you're using matrix.org as your homeserver, yeah. if you're using roota.cc it should be instant

why didn't IRC take off?

Seems pretty quick on mine, matrix.org just sucks ;)
@Burgi it kinda was niche ;p

@GDPR i'll get round to changing that :)
@JourneymanGeek poor marketing

I tried to sign up to someone elses homeserver and i never got the text message :/
IRC did take off,

@djsmiley2k This is a thing now?!
SMS included?

10:19 AM
yup

(I have groused on more than one occasion before about the poor options for using a proper screen + keyboard for writing SMSs)

hehe yah
every few months I'd get a text, think about it, and then forget again
today I got a text, and as reading it, it popped up that I could do that

Your ideas intrigue me and I want to subscribe to your ah sod it runs off to check phone

does that cost money?

10:21 AM
Oh Emm Gee
IT WORKSSSSSS!

Bob
@Burgi It's instant across homeservers for me (from matrix.vulpin.com to roota.cc)

@Burgi errr no?

Mind = blown

other than having internet access on both devices.
@bertieb WE LIVE IN THE FUTURE

10:22 AM
@djsmiley2k Right!?

Now I need something like tweetdeck, but in a browser, which lets me access SMS, Whatsapp, etc all in one tab.

I mean, we should have had this since like 2012 but me takes what me gets

#neverhappy.

Bob
@djsmiley2k I'm gonna bet that doesn't work with the Samsung messages app

@Bob Dunno, I stopped using stupid apps
but yeah, prob won't work.

10:23 AM
@djsmiley2k but it sends SMS?

Bob
though funnily enough IIRC Cortana actually let you send SMSes from your PC via an Android phone (with Cortana installed on the phone)

@djsmiley2k Like Rambox?

@Burgi via your phone...

Bob
so this is at least 3 years late to the party :P

so yes it costs money

10:24 AM
If sending an SMS costs money then yes

pfffft
i'll stick to whatsapp

I'm not 100% that Rambox integrates the new web Messages interface yet, but you can bet it will soon...

@Burgi lol
kinda missing the point.
@bertieb pretty cool
@Bob yah
but at least it's here
now other apps need to catch up
My phone should litterally be a remote pc screen, or visversa

Also, y'know.... Cortana

10:27 AM
@djsmiley2k how am i missing the point? none of my friends use SMS anymore

the point is I still get texts and have to dig out my phone to read em
now, I can read em on the browser
which is funny, because if it's a hacked PC, it kills all 2fa
\o/

but you physically need the phone to authorise the browser

yah
but once done...

lol

Bob
10:30 AM
my data is in there

@Burgi no marketing

@JourneymanGeek that'll do it

actually
most folks kinda get surprised if you use irc these days

10:52 AM
I use IRC because most people don't ;D

11:05 AM
hipster ;)

2 hours later…
1:01 PM
viper pilots represent!
fails at breakdancing

Omg I love Wipeout.

this is sooooo 90s.... i remember going to play laser quest and they had a playstation in the foyer with wipeout on it
wipeout, laser quest, followed by more wipeout, then to the cyber cafe to spend hours on yahoo chat trying to meet girls

My top-viewed YT video is of me playing wipEout 2097 poorly shrug
Good times
@Burgi I think our laser quest was called the 'Zap Zone', assuming it was the same thing :P
Ah, childhood birthday parties

this was just a normal saturday

Wipeout is Mario Cart for grown ups. xD

1:20 PM
@Burgi Mmm lazer quest
Girls on the internet in the 90's?
Geez

@ADHDCat i was young and naive

Bob
2:01 PM
@Burgi I prefer the flying cities :P

@Bob from James Blish's Cities in Flight?
@Bob ah SG1/Atlantis

Bob
It looks much better on water though

the puddle jumpers were quite cool

2:15 PM

@Burgi I'm partial to starfuries myself
.... not a single B5 ship? Those those... uncultured barbarians :(

lol

3:14 PM
@Burgi how hot is it outside btw
I didn't dare go out
because the entire country is apparently on fire.

3:24 PM
MiTM attacks are apparently not possible anymore?
Hm. I wonder if this will affect how devices on a network communicate with each-other.

hmmmm of course it will
they won't be able to get on the wifi :D

Also, I'm not sure if devices need different hardware for this, or if smartphones and the such will be able to upgrade to make use of WPA3

@rahuldottech i'm seeing nothing majorly new here
> On WPA3? Not so much. When you log onto a coffee shop’s WPA3 Wi-Fi with a WPA3 device, your connection will automatically be encrypted without the need for additional credentials. It does so using an established standard called Opportunistic Wireless Encryption.
lol, because wpa2 isn't 'encrypted' ?

@djsmiley2k its 31 here

@djsmiley2k no, as in
Each connection to the router will be independently encrypted
That won't happen anymore.
Right now devices on a network can see what information other devices are exchanging with the router

3:35 PM
blimey

> Weather: 27°C, Wind E at 8 mph (13 km/h), 25% Humidity

old dev has popped up

@Burgi how old?

the disappearing one
he has got a job at an agency in the south of the city

@djsmiley2k WPA2 requires a password or other credentials
@rahuldottech Wrong.

3:47 PM
@ADHDCat how so?

because you don't encrypt the traffic using the passphrase
that would be stupid :)
@ADHDCat yah, I know
oh right, yeah ok now I see
because most places use a hotspot, they don't have a passphase or anything else

@djsmiley2k everywhere i go has a passphrase but its usually printed on the menu or on a board

You're safe using any Wi-Fi network as long as you exclusively use HTTPS sites.

Ave
4:17 PM
@rahuldottech official text wi-fi.org/news-events/newsroom/…

5:17 PM
@Michael We understand that. The general public doesn't. Or it doesn't care.
Besides, many, many apps do not use encrypted connections
@Ave argh don't they have a PDF with all the specifications?
wtf why do I have to give my personal info to access the PDF? wi-fi.org/downloads-registered-guest/…

5:34 PM
I know, just sayin'.
I think that's an important point that most people don't realize.

5:53 PM
argh my internet connectin sucks halp
i'm getting <50kbps

6:07 PM
ffs
only just got home
the main road bridge over the canal has expanded in the heat and is stuck open
also the moorland above the city is on fire and everywhere is covered in a horrible smog
> Connectivity to the server has been lost.
Sent messages will be stored until your connection has returned.
hmm...

@Burgi Sounds frustrating; but it could be worse
Bridge on fire, smog has expanded, everywhere is covered in moorland

lol

guys!
movie recommendations?

7:02 PM
What kind of movie are you looking for?

The one with the tiny pictures that move

@BenN Any, really.

I saw Rememory recently, that was pretty good

ohmygoshwarm

@BenN SciFi! Haven't seen any in a long time...

7:05 PM
@rahuldottech donnie darko

:45348732 More of my thing, I think. I'll probably end up watching this this tonight. Thanks!

:D

@ThatBrazilianGuy Those are my favorite.

@BenN Why'd you delete the message tho?

Reasons(TM)

7:07 PM
@Michael I prefer the ones with the BIG pictures that move.

@djsmiley2k I'll give this a shot tomorrow or in the next couple of days

@BenN =/
@djsmiley2k Donnie Darko is great.
"Why are you wearing that stupid human suit"?

Marvel movies are always nice.

@Michael Watched 'em all

@rahuldottech pr0n?

7:19 PM
@Burgi ehhh

nvm

@Burgi In any case, I'm under 18, lol

meh never stopped me
shrug

@Burgi I'm saying nothing.

8:07 PM
I've been watching a lot of "let's plays" on YouTube recently.

Does it look interesting?
I don't have a Switch, so I never clicked on em

8:41 PM
Erm, you don't need a Switch to watch video game videos.
It's fun watching play-throughs of that new game "Detroit". So many different storylines.

Dat URL doe
subdomains much?

@rahuldottech Right now devices on a network can see what information other devices are exchanging with the router only if the AP is configured with encryption turned off

@Michael Yea, I know, but I never watched the videos, cause I don't have a Switch to tempt me to get it

@bertieb CDN link by the looks.

@MichaelFrank Aye
Suspect it has a short bitrot shelf life, that one

10:27 PM
give me a 4 digit number between 0001 and 8500

10:44 PM
nvm

@Burgi NaN

lol
