12:18 AM
@Bob -_-
@allquixotic That sounds like what my Swiftkey would write if I just hit the next word prediction over and over.

1 hour later…
1:27 AM
...and just cleared Pitioss Ruins after more than four hours of almost non-stop play.
Saved, of course.
And the room is getting insanely hot, what with the desktop spewing all this heat continuously.
(FWIW, I was partly into the dungeon before pulling out, representing another hour or so of effort, so you're looking at about 5.5 hours of total time in Pitioss)

Bob
1:45 AM
morn

2:02 AM
...this is not good.
Just how long has Intel been on 14nm? I mean, they ought to be able to move to 10nm.

@Blogbot does that apply to SU too? it seems every week we get a user whining on meta that we're mean to them because they have to follow the rules
"How do I build a forum?"
CLOSED NARQ
"Hey, that's meeeean!"

> This post focuses on Stack Overflow, but most of it applies to the broader Stack Exchange network as well.
(footnote 1)

!!hv

> Let’s do something about comments. Condescension and sarcasm have been reluctantly tolerated in comments for too long. We’ll research possible feature changes, but let’s start by working with the community and our community managers to start flagging and deleting unkind comments now.
welp, Ram's gonna get flagged to oblivion :P (not by me, but by the larger community)

2:09 AM
shrug
flag that shit.
I'd be happy to take a look.
Quite literally all these problems arn't going to get solved by more tooling IMO

have non-SO mods received a brief on changing your outlook when handling flags of this nature, or were you just pointed to the same blag?

its going to get by getting our asses in gear and being the best we can
@allquixotic .... the latter.
Its fine
I do not curse the dark. I bark at it I light fires :)

@allquixotic I think the issue with Ramhound is that he has trouble phrasing his comments to not be so harsh.

Q: "Stack Overflow Isn’t Very Welcoming" - sure, but you could say that for quite a few SE sites!

topo mortoI am very... welcoming... of "Stack Overflow Isn’t Very Welcoming. It’s Time for That to Change." I'm wondering if the implication is that problems will be sorted out on SO and also (perhaps later) on other SE sites where similar issues exist - or that problems will be sorted out on SO, and none...

heh

I don't think he truly intends it, but that's my impression.

2:15 AM
@bwDraco agreed
whenever he comes in here it's clear he's not trying to be mean spirited
yet the ridic number of downvotes and comments that make people mad enough to write meta Qs about them makes clear he's the kind of user that blag is talking about

He can be... inarticulate
So, here's the hard thing for a mod
What do we actually do? I try to address the comment issue, ironically in comments.
he's a user in good standing, but the tools we have for dealing with unwanted comments kinda suck.
So literally our options are suspension or asking him to stop.

HAMMERTIME!

shut up John.
;p

A separate chat room for us to bring up problematic content and provide suggestions on how to phrase them better.
It's a language issue, first and foremost.

needs extra effort. In theory for questions and answers we can deal with these
Our tooling for comments frankly... sucks
or we can tighten up standards. No noice comments. Any comment must be a clarification or extra information. ANYTHING that looks like an answer goes.
and send more mod messages to people for comments that don't meet a very strict set of rules.

2:26 AM
That looks very heavy-handed.

yup!
But that is what it would, ironically, take to solve the comment issue.
Now
NOW....
There's a few things SE that talks about that gets us halfway there.

Q: Can we tinker with the "beginner question" multi-field format for other sites too?

allquixoticPer today's blog post, it seems Stack Overflow will in the future1: test a new “beginner” ask page that breaks the question box into multiple fields – one for each of the key things answerers need to help My train of thought on this went something like: That's awesome! ... Wait. Stack Ove...

Q: Fixing comments in 5 minutes. Intrigued? Let's discuss

Robert CartainoI made a quick change to Area 51 recently, and it had a profound effect on how people used that site, so let's discuss. Background: The basic building blocks of every SE site are the QUESTION and the ANSWER. They are clearly portrayed as such, so if anyone puts "something else" in that space, ...

@allquixotic SORRY!

@JourneymanGeek ?

anyway, I want the above
lol. kinda broke that train of conversation XD

2:28 AM
oh, no problem, I just got inspired to ask that

2:38 AM
Expressed support ;p
@bwDraco that is to say, the solution to comments is to rethink what comments are

My dream is for this feature to be available everywhere and to work more or less the way you suggest. For solid A/B testing, SO's size is a real advantage. But I think sites like Super User are a good choice for proof of concept tests. I'll suggest we look your way if we start testing other network sites. (Also, I bet this would be interesting on some Enterprise sites too.) — Jon Ericson ♦ 12 mins ago
sounds like SE had the same idea I had

well the CMs do
I suspect though, we're slightly well loved at this point so hopefully... ;p

SU was one of the first sites. was it the second site in the network?
I know it was part of the original tech trilogy

third
SF is older

ahh

3:00 AM
I THINK MS(O)E is the 4th part of the trilogy
MSO/E is older

2 hours later…
Bob
5:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek That doesn't really work for the SU format

@Bob I was being hyperbolic ;p
I do think comments being mainly for clarification would solve many issues

Bob
More specifically, we have many (many many) questions that are in the line of "maybe try this... try that? maybe that one?"

THOSE ARE FINE!

Bob
They're very answer-y
without actually being solid answers
and, ironically, are often downvoted/deleted for not actually being answers when posted as one
first thing is to make up your mind: should suggestions go in comments or answers? or should questions that invite suggestions (I'd guess a good 75% of them) be outright banned?
if you're talking banning the suggestions while allowing the questions, that's horrible
and then there's people who don't like questions that aren't about "real problems", so there goes another 20% or so of them
we do have the advantage of being a tech-y site unlike workplace, ips, skeptics, etc., where having answers-in-comments where they can't be downvoted is a real problem

Bob
5:26 AM
answer-y suggestions in comments on SU do more good than harm, IMO

broader context!
Now my usual way of dealing with these is suggest people flesh out those comments into answers
and I'm literally saying all that to point out comments are a hard problem to solve

Bob
@JourneymanGeek in the current frame of the site, where there's a push towards having fewer answers and preferably one answer (I don't like that personally), that doesn't really work unless a comment has already been identified as solving the problem
which is often the last comment in a long chain
and even if that does get later converted into an answer, any purge of the troubleshooting chain removes a lot of useful information from future visitors

Mind if I reframe this?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek hm?

@Bob these get thrown into a chat link if they're remotely useful
@Bob this is entirely in the context of the earlier conversation.

Bob
5:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek IIRC you can only chatify once per post

My view is comments are transient - I'd like to roll in as much as possible that's not noise into posts, and very eventually convert to chat once things have run their course
but this is literally "there's a user in good standing who comments, and gets bad reactions"
and the entire context here is "There's really not much nuanced, directed action we can take"
I'm not talking about clamping down on comments

Bob
:\

so...
I SO DO NOT WANT TO GO ALL COMMENT ALT WRITE AT ALL.
anything that sounds like me going "nuke em all forever" is not serious.
heck, if I need to suspend folk for excessive comments (which have been an issue a few times this month) I do so with a heavy heart, soul searching, and a bit of a review from other mods.

Bob
a few times? o.O

uh
ya ;p
twice? at least?
oh
in most cases Ive been having a word with people

1 hour later…
6:56 AM
yawn, morning

@djsmiley2k Do me a favour please
Visit https://pinex.ga/?djs and allow it to access your location?
I'll delete the data, I just need to see if it's working
@JourneymanGeek By literally one minute

Oh wait
that's months, not minutes
Right...

user226528
Hola, amigos!

user226528
Although, I might as well give up on Spanish. The film that I was so interested in watching and decided to learn Spanish for... well, turns out it is actually in Italian.

7:09 AM
0_0
QUE?

@JourneymanGeek hm?

(is french. make funny.)

user226528
Oh, he has ignored me. He doesn't know why you asked "Que?"

user226528
And probably doesn't know that "que" is Spanish for "What?"

I thought it was french!

user226528
7:11 AM
In French, it would be "Quelle?"

I don't ignore people, typically. Makes modding hard
ah lol
its been a while

user226528
Also, in proper Spanish, it is "¿Qué?".

user226528
The funny thing is, ever since Rahul has ignored me, I have had some of the longest and most technical computer discussions in this chat room.

@JourneymanGeek lol, I thought it was the abbreviation for an SE site

user226528
And many of my messages have gotten starred.

user226528
7:14 AM
So, I guess it is great that he ignored me.

user226528
So, JourneymanGeek, ¿Qué pasa en el mundo de la informática?

user226528
¿Le gusta su nuevo trabajo de alto secreto?

0_0
I almost understand half of that.

user226528
LOL. Is that "half" the part that reads "So, JourneymanGeek"?

user226528
O.o

user226528
7:23 AM
Heads up!

user226528
iTunes is now available on Microsoft Store!!! 😲

good enough!
"What happens in the world of information technology?"

user226528
"¿Qué pasa?" means "What's up?"

user226528
"informática" is used to mean "computing".

user226528
7:29 AM
Even the Spanish Wikipedia article "Informática" is the counterpart of the English Wikipedia article "Computing".

user226528
By the way, does anyone here has experience working with F-spot?

user226528
Never mind. It is unmaintained.

morning

user226528
o/

@FleetCommand sup?

user226528
7:39 AM
@AndyK Well, apparently, JourneymanGeek is more interested in Spanish than the fact that iTunes is released to Microsoft Store.

user226528
That was the gist of it.

user226528
Also, I am trying to find a good image organizer for Linux.

8:14 AM
sounds about right

8:36 AM
how do you organise images tho?

user226528
In folders, with tag and XMP metadata.

@FleetCommand lmao

2 hours later…
10:55 AM
@FleetCommand Let me know when you find one.

11:07 AM
yanno
there's a site...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek oh, oh, I know this one! it starts with S, right?
S... erver Fault?

Oh LOOK UPON WHY WORKS, OH PUNY AND DESPAIR!
(software recommendations)
and I'm serious there. If no one here goes "hey, this is cool" might as well give it a shot

11:32 AM
ok so the office has gone complretely bonkers today
Amen
@FleetCommand how much you willing to spend?
and how much photos to sort through?
Because google photos is amazing
I searched my photos for 'Cows'
Sure, it's not perfect...

@djsmiley2k you might be mad at the one on the right, but should you be calling her a cow? ;p

;)
nah she's hawt
Wooooooooo
overtime tonight/tomorrow
booo, working late tonight/tomorrow

11:48 AM
lol
working 8-8 tommorrow

I woke up (not deliberately) at 5:30am today
i'm working to ~11pm tonight, because we have a huge failover exercise
then start again 'recovering' tomorrow at 8am
til ~finish, which could be anywhere between 12 and 6pm

Bob
For any Star Trek fans among us :P
the entire thread's worth a read

> I'm not sure if I think the feature is on the roadmap
hmm....
struggling to parse that

it means "I need more coffee"

This morning I read 'Fork Process' as Pork Process and my head almost exploded.

12:13 PM
@djsmiley2k forking the pork?
our customer service team today is going mental
they are freaking out about the littlest thing
no idea why
one has lodged an official complaint with the head of customer services about me. he has told her to grow up and stop being petty...
another has slammed the phone down on me twice

@Burgi you dirty dog viper you

heh
@JourneymanGeek its you with the perverted mind, i was talking about forking the Pork repo on GitHub! ;)

So, THATS what they call it these days

lol

12:29 PM
@BenN, are you around by any chance?

damn, the .shell TLD is run by "Shell Information Technology International Inc"

power.shell would have been a domain BenN would have bought

@allquixotic bestpetrolintheworldis.shell

12:40 PM
lol
youcanbesureof.shell
(old advertising slogan ;p)

thereisaghostinmy.shell

the trainee found the solution

Needed to enable raising events?

> "People just submitted it," Zuckerberg replied. "I don't know why. They 'trust me.' Dumb fucks."

I wonder, will they push updates to iTunes through Windows Store's update mechanism, or will it still use that antiquated Apple Update?

i'm beginning to think this zuckerberg character isn't a pleasant chap

> The iTunes of the Windows Store is just the same old regular iTunes, but now installation updates are handled through the Windows Store updater
Per TechCrunch
!!yes

@Burgi It took you this many years?

1:06 PM
yeah, I knew Zucc wasn't a pleasant chap back when the only people who could join Facebook were college students

I'm pretty sure I read that 2004 quote something like ten years ago

i was being facetious

@allquixotic I wish it'd stayed that way, would have kept some of the riff raff out...

who do you think leaks all the naked photos people post? its zuckerberg

Which one? I like naked people.
I'm a naked people right now. Err I mean cat.
Which is why, as a cat, I like following people into the bathroom

1:10 PM
o.O

user226528
@RogUE Found one. XnViewMP. It is still in beta, but then again, most Linux apps are. It supports any file format I can think of. And it is free.

What, you've never heard the cats following people into the bathroom stereotype?
I thought all cats did it

user226528

our cat never did

1:15 PM
our dog used to follow us to the bathroom
this little black nose would appeared under the door and snort really loudly while you tried to have a crap

Weird dog. It's common for cats, never had a dog though so I wouldn't know.
Dogs are inferior anyway

1:30 PM
leaving that one well alone....

/me wibbles
@FleetCommand Eye of Gnome? (EoG)

Bob
you what

They're very sorry

user226528
@djsmiley2k It is an image viewer, not organizer. Its supported file format range is pathetic. JPEG XR, JPEG 2000 and RAW formats are not supported.

user226528
To its credit, it supports SVG. But I have to find out how powerful its SVG renderer is.

Bob
1:47 PM
So, yea. End the random other onenote process hanging around, and it starts.
Because restarting your computer is so much easier than just closing the other damn process.

2:02 PM
@Bob because kill {pidof OneNote} is too hard :D

user226528
@djsmiley2k Hi. So, you've played FFX, right? Any idea how to get 16 hits with Lulu's overdrive?

user226528
I hardly get one.

Bob
user image
4

2:20 PM
@FleetCommand hmmm Lulu's overdrive
on the ps2/3 that was 'spin the right stick as fast as possible' iirc

user226528
That's what the walkthroughs say.

user226528
But I am one a PC.

@FleetCommand It's been ages since I've played and I don't have a FFX installation right now, so I won't be able to test. IIRC this depends on the spell you're trying to cast.

@FleetCommand magic stat + spell / fury level according to the googles
I never used it, as it was terrible

(e.g. it's easier to multicast Fire than Firaga)

2:23 PM
@Burgi Didn't I read that it's a case of wanting to protect you

I was never really fond of Lulu's Overdrive.

from the evil bog monster?

Something something something dogs are vulnerable while pooping (which is why they look round at you)
Something something something they also want to protect you while you poop

user226528
@bwDraco @djsmiley2k Oh, I know that part alright. I am stuck in the casting part. Fury requires a key combination which is shown as <- and -> But I don't know how to input them.

2:25 PM
press left and right alternatively, really fast?

@bertieb mine dosen't.
Roomie just looks straight out

@Burgi Many thought we did with Trump but he's a puppet and agenda is real.

@JourneymanGeek Some dogs people dogs have already achieved Zen
Agh, closed the wrong tab again

it's now "cold" at 17 deg C

@Bob It's "warm" here at 13°C :P

2:36 PM
17°C is toasty!

user226528
@djsmiley2k Eh. Your guess is as good as mine. I guess I'll install a turbo controller simulator.

3:06 PM

Does moving applications from Windows Server 2008 to 2016 cause big issues with windows authentication?

user226528
@MinistryofChaps In general, no. But I can conceive an app that makes that kind of problem, perhaps on purpose.

user226528
Of course, when you said moving, I assumed you mean an upgrade.

user226528
If you mean transferring from one system to another, yes, it always makes problems.

user226528
Different computers have different SIDs.

3:12 PM
Yes upgrading, it's an in-house application it seems to be breaking when adding/removing groups and users.
@FleetCommand so it looks like an SO issue.

@MinistryofChaps might potentially fit on SF

user226528
@MinistryofChaps Trying giving us a little bit of details. Maybe preview your question here too.

@FleetCommand essentially we setup the application on 2016 as we did with 2008, there's a GroupPrinicpal class under DirectorySystem.AccountManagement and when you use the .Save function it is returning an "access is denied" issue.
.Save creates the group on the local machine.

@Bob jesus, they weren't kidding

user226528
3:28 PM
@MinistryofChaps Boy, that escalated quickly. Yep. Definitely a SO question. And I believe you are referring to the System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement namespace.

Ave

@Ave kl?
oh this your server?

Ave
yup

hurrar for you i guess? :D

Ave
server works, ilo works, performance is good, power consumption is good, plastic cover for servicing with lid open is in place, everything is working, I'm happy.
also power supply is one of the non-bad ones

3:32 PM
\o/
a bad server PSU would be a pain

@FleetCommand thought so too was hoping there could be something to be changed on the server but yeah looks like we'll need to do some refactoring.

Ave
ALSO
it's a later model of DL380G5 so it's rather silent

Thank you though.

user226528

Huh?

Irrational stupidity is rarely funny. For the stupidity to be fun, it needs to follow some fangled sort of rationale.

Basically, machine has been giving me frequent BSODs, and the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth intermittently stop working, requiring a full power cycle to recover. These failures, as well as crash dump analyses, point to one thing: the wireless network adapter.
