wow, huge difference between wifi and wired for my Alienware 13 R3 with "Killer" 802.11ac wifi (Qualcomm/Atheros AFAIK) and my 2016 Skylake MBP 13"
wired (on anything) pulls about 850/500 to the Internet and gigabit line speed on the LAN
wireless on the MBP pulls almost 400 Mbps down and 280 Mbps up; wireless on the Alienware pulls 220 down and 120 up
and the Alienware's wireless appears to have a bit of packet loss but the MBP's doesn't

Bob
> Atheros
There's your problem! :P

lol
to further cement the massive difference between the chipsets, Steam in-home streaming is unreliable, drops a lot of frames, and results in Internet-bound packet timeouts when using the MBP on wifi and the Alienware on wifi, but when I switch the Alienware to Ethernet and keep using the MBP on wifi, it's perfect
anyone who says Apple doesn't do wireless correctly has an outdated opinion
both laptops are / were using 5 GHz FWIW
> Broadcom BCM43xx
AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x157)

12:43 AM
@allquixotic ya, 'killer' is qualcomm with custom firmware

@JourneymanGeek uh huh... "never miss a frame!" "super responsive gaming firmware!" "free WTFast!" so much ricer nonsense ===> worse than a good professional card that actually works

@allquixotic more or less
tbh given a choice I'd go with intel for anything NIC

I'm a huge fan of Broadcom - or at least, Apple's recent implementations of it. Their phones and laptops' Bluetooth and WiFi codecs are either Broadcom or Murata in recent iterations - usually Broadcom BT + Murata WiFi
and they've been fantastic
Broadcom's legacy Widcomm BT stack for Windows can DIAF but their 2015+ hardware is great

I've never seen murata wifi

Saw this fella out of my window
The white-bellied sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster), also known as the white-breasted sea eagle, is a large diurnal bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. Originally described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1788, it is closely related to Sanford's sea eagle of the Solomon Islands, and the two are considered a superspecies. A distinctive bird, the adult white-bellied sea eagle has a white head, breast, under-wing coverts and tail. The upper parts are grey and the black under-wing flight feathers contrast with the white coverts. The tail is short and wedge-shaped as in all Haliaeetus species. Like...

I still haven't gotten my replacement cable from Corsair to use that PCI-mounted laptop impeller @Bob - but based on the temps I'm getting, it seems like I just needed to improve the air intake by enabling the disabled intake fan, adding an exhaust fan, and have that 80mm fan blowing up into the heatsink of the RAID card :P

3:32 AM
.... that's a bad unintended pun

4:16 AM
Okay wtf, why are these extremely simple and fundamental issues so common on Apple OSes yet they have such sophisticated security models and stuff -.- this is ridiculous now

Bob
4:38 AM
@allquixotic that sounds like just wonky % symbol parsing, no?
not particularly serious..?

one thing I love/hate about chat
I just looked up one of the meds ash is on on one of the other rooms
on one hand, damn, so much information floating around. On the other, its somewhere I know where to find it ;p

hm
Kinda ironically - I suspect its cause people who stick to RSS feeds are so deeply geeky... its kinda hard to make money off a hosted service.

Should I disconnect ink cartridges from printer before transporting? And where should I put them?

why doesn't downloads from Google Drive show the time remaining and file size in Firefox based browser(Palemoon)?

stuff like that's usually serverside
@Boris_yo didn't we have this conversation before?

Tesla Model S cars are surprisingly common in Hong Kong.
(FWIW the average car owner in Hong Kong is far wealthier than the average car owner in the United States or even New York City)
The class gap is also extremely wide in Hong Kong - there is practically no middle class.

8:51 AM
@Boris_yo This depends on the type of cartridge the printer uses. If the head is built into the cartridge (common with cheaper HP printers), it's generally okay to take it out; keep the cartridge in an airtight zipper bag. If the head is separate from the cartridge (typical for Epson, Canon, and business-grade HP printers), cartridges should always be left in the printer.
Printers with built-in print heads must always be inked once you install the first set of cartridges. If the printer is ever operated with a dry print head, damage can occur.

A: How to print in black and white when a color ink cartridge is out of ink

bwDracoThis depends on the printer. On many printers with printheads built in, ink must be in the printhead at all times to prevent damage, although there may be a limited reserve of ink available for temporary printing. From what I know, some newer HP printers, even IIC models where the printhead is ...

@RogUE It means the filesize hasn't been sent prior to the file begining.
1
A: How does browser know how much page has been loaded?

William JacksonWhen a browser requests a file from a server, the server has the option to tell the browser up-front how large the file is. The server does this by sending a Content-Length header. There is some other information about how a browser can determine the size of a file it is downloading.

Same for file downloads iirc
as the page is just a file anyway.

9:36 AM
@allquixotic @bwDraco If I don't do any graphic-intensive stuff, just some light gaming and the occasional edit on Blender or Photoshop, Integrated Graphics are good enough?

It depends on the specifics. Is this a laptop or a desktop?
> light gaming

@bwDraco Laptop
@bwDraco Halo/Rocket League and the likes

Depending on what you're playing, you might want to look for something like a GeForce GTX 1050.
You don't need much for eSports, but you definitely want at least basic discrete graphics.

@bwDraco It's a laptop, and one although there's an option with 2GB 940M, it's turning out to be too expensive

The 940M is old. What integrated/processor graphics is the laptop equipped with?

9:41 AM
@bwDraco Intel® Core™ i7 7500U Processor,

Intel HD Graphics 620. You're going to want a basic discrete graphics solution.

@bwDraco :/

If you can get even an MX150 at reasonable cost, that would be a big step up from the processor graphics.
You don't need a high-end solution, but processor graphics won't give you an ideal experience.
Alternatively, a Radeon RX 550 will deliver similar or better performance than the MX150.

10:00 AM
I wouldn't call rocket league and halo 'light'

ugh

hi @Burgi :D
Plz entertain me on this friday morning

we have another pointless all company meeting for an hour this afternoon
they drag on for an hour explaining shit that could be in an email

@djsmiley2k Because. Now shutup.

@djsmiley2k Fine. I'm trying to figure out how to install a bunch of .msp updates and have the script report any installation failures.

Q: How can I make any sort of profit in day-trading if the price doesn't rise much after I buy stock?

Jade Louise YoungHow can I make 'big profit' in day trading if every stock i've seen only raises by around £10? I've actually found some companies that make me a £30 profit, is this what I need to go for? I'm just worried after comission i'm not going to make anything. I would invest more money but this is all ...

@FleetCommand fun times.
I wanna know where all the cables are D:
tho maybe we've actually used them

user226528
10:47 AM
You've lost cables? People usually find them too visually intrusive but you actually lost them?

user226528
Un mundo raro.

found em
someone hid them under someones old desk
because they were 'untidy'
and we had auditors in, tho the auditors already confirmed that cables,equipment and boxes were fine if they were for a project that was in progress
now to label 39 cables...

user226528
11:04 AM
@djsmiley2k By the way, I am curious. What is your computer specialization?

user226528
Of course, if that's not too much of a private question for this chat room...

@djsmiley2k heh, I had someone complain about my desk at job -1
but... things worked very efficiently

@FleetCommand At work, or in general?
At work I'm a network engineer

user226528
@djsmiley2k Jobs can sometimes be irrelevant to people's specializations (especially in films.) No. What is in the computing that you do best and defines you.

In life, I love Linux, and simplying processes
so errrr simplying things
I'm a techo-geek

user226528
11:17 AM
Now you're talking. That's actually cool. If you don't mind me asking, are you very good at it?

11:27 AM
Depends, I'm not a programmer
but I've ran my desktop at home exclusively on linux for the last ~12 years
I built my own linux router from a alix box
At some of the jobs I've had, i've written new monitoring scripts in bash/php/python to run on linux under stuff like nagios.

11:38 AM
As for my job, I guess I'm good enough at it? :D

I seem to have asked this question on SE. No answers.

Q: How can my script determine if installation of a certain Windows Installer update (MSP) succeeded or failed?

Fleet CommandI've written a PowerShell script (see below) to install a very large number of MSP updates (files with .msp extensions, deployed via Windows Installer) one after the other. Now, I'd like this script to also tell me when the installation of an MSP update failed. Things that I have tried: Querying...

So... For the umpteenth time an excavator broke our fiber.
This time looks like it was an section that links two buildings instead of one that links all the dozens of buildings to the backbone.
But worry not, they replaced it. With a 100 Mbps link. For the whole building.
I had 100 Mbps on my workstation previously...

12:27 PM
lol
slow internets is slow
tho with a good caching setup, you shouldn't notice

Bob
@FleetCommand IIRC MSI uses the CBS log. You could probably check recent entries there. But that's very hacky.

@FleetCommand Should be more than that
lots of return codes for various errors.

12:55 PM
@djsmiley2k Caching hahahaha

:D :D :D

What's this squid thing you speak of?
Seafood?

Not sure if joking :/

Q: As a woman, how to avoid angry stares from other people's wives or girlfriends

ReplicaI am a moderately good looking woman. With basic makeup and hair styling, I can make myself look pretty. This is my preferred look when I go out. I often get a lot of stares, sometimes admiring and sometimes nasty, from other male colleagues and I have pretty much accepted that it, mainly because...

@JourneymanGeek Recommendations for windows software to create a (non-system) disk image?

err, disk2vhd
assuming its a healthy disk
@Bob ... accidentally switched off my desktop, then realised this dosen't have steam
I need to neaten up my cables

@JourneymanGeek It's not
Mounts on Linux, not on Windows
Gives errors and stuff

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "switched off" :P
@rahuldottech Then create your image in Linux?

I plan to repair it, but I first want to take an image

Bob
ddrescue is the de-facto standard

3:23 PM
@Bob I don't have access to a Linux PC right now
Ugh

Bob
If you're only experiencing FS corruption and not read errors from the disk hardware, then any random disk imager will do.
If you're experiencing disk read errors... ddrescue, and chuck the drive in a bin.

@Bob like tripped on the power cable ;p
which is probably a sign I should stop paying attention to MSE drama and go to bed ;p
@rahuldottech if the disk is borked and unmountable gnuddrescue is the best option, and yeah you'd want to do it in linux

@JourneymanGeek Okay then
Goodnight

Bob
Oh sure, listen to the dog :P

@Bob Well
What he recommended for windows failed anyway
So I was going to try your suggestion next

Bob
3:29 PM
disk2vhd isn't a disk imager
it's a ntfs imager
difference: disk imager reads raw bytes and only fails if the disk is daed/dying
ntfs imager reads ... ntfs filesystem structures and writes it to an image file (after transformation)
ntfsclone does that directly

@Bob ah. Probably why is didn't work
Good to know
Thanks. Going offline to boot live Ubuntu

Bob
disk2vhd goes through windows apis, iirc, which probably requires a mounted volume in the first place
Windows disk imagers exist... disk2vhd isn't really one
e.g. Acronis can take raw disk images
most backup software can, tbh

3:46 PM
@Xenophobe All of these used to work with HTTP, but Mozilla and Google (very rightly) now enforce HTTPS as a requirement. It's not that they cannot work on HTTP, it's that they should never be. HTTP IS NOT SECURE. All HTTP data can be be intercepted at various points. Transmitting data as personal as your real-time location over HTTP is a BAD idea, especially since SSL certificates can be obtained for freerahuldottech 17 secs ago
Anything anyone would like to add?

4:16 PM
@rahuldottech .... you need to explain why free ssl doesn't mean that whoever you're sending your data to, is legitimate, just that it means no one else can read it.
Also i'd lay off the caps
Maybe point them to a good answer on why SSL is a good idea.

4:29 PM
and another russian turns up dead.
:O
LOL
So Google Chrome has a DNT setting, which appears at some point to be turned on for external content...
External content such as youtube (from Google) now gets blocked by Google Chrome, because not respecting the DNT which they turned on.
Urgh
Can't rmemeber what plugin I'm using at home
I thought I was using ublock origin, but loading that here shows it's not.
Anyway of knowing what extensions I have installed else where? D:

So. Using VNC on Android 6 and up has been made difficult because Google disable an encryption (Anonymous Diffie Hellman, IIRC) which is used by default by some VNC servers.
Not sure if all VNC servers, not sure if the encryption is weak...

... You expect encryption on VNC?

All I know is I tried to share my Fedora desktop yesterday and it didn't work.
The two VNC clients I used complained about the lack of encryption.
And I had to manually disable encryption on the server

6:47 PM
@ThatREDACTEDGuy Android apps don't have any particular limitation of having to use Google's APIs, so there's nothing preventing someone from putting an app up on the Play Store that has a custom build of OpenSSL that re-enables that
I guess it's just if the Android app they wrote uses the Android native crypto APIs (which I can't remember if that's just JCE or something custom)
also you can do VNC over SSL or SSH (SSH via port forwarding) and that's pretty secure

@CanadianLuke Best option, obviously.

Trainee: What should I do if I'm alone in the lab and this happens?
Presenter: I will address that on the next slide. [advances slide]
Slide: If you get injured, file a report.
Everyone: :/
Turns out the slide on shutting off the valve was two slides after the one about things to check, oops

@MichaelFrank was it you watching me btw?
