@MichaelFrank Sometimes, when a brownout happens, hardware glitches and you need to completely cut power for it for a few seconds before turning it back on in order to recover.

1 hour later…
1:55 AM
You should invest in a cheap UPS, has done wonders, for my home setup

2 hours later…
4:11 AM
Yea, a UPS would be useful... I can probably get one from work that's due to be decommissioned actually...

4:22 AM
@MichaelFrank iirc the batteries on those are mostly standard too

1 hour later…
5:24 AM
Batteries always surprise me with their price

4 hours later…
9:02 AM
morning
@Hennes which sort of batteries?

@bergi
Could you be well versed with cloudflare

Try @Burgi ...

@Burgi @MichaelFrank Anyone who knows how cloudflare works

on a purely abstract level, yes

How do they manage to keep the old nameservers

9:12 AM
they don't?

for instance, they ask someone to chnage the nameservers of your domain to yours
to theirs
but the website still is pointed to the old host

so they just copied the DNS records?

I am not sure whats happening but they somehow how the authority now to manage my dns. That happened when i changed the nameservers from the ones i was given by my website hosting company and put in the ones cloudflare provided

you know DNS is public right?
all they did was look up the existing records, copy them to their servers and carried on as normal
it reduces the potential for unexpected downtime

I get
Usually, when you change nameservers in the domain,say update from namecheap given nameservers to godaddy nameservers, the website is supposed to go offline
until you transfer the website to godaddy

9:19 AM
o.O
never happened to me

ok

Bob
@Burgi the list of subdomains actually isn't public unless you have zone transfers enabled
@Gandalf uh, nope
DNS has nothing to do with the website

@Bob i did just assume he was talking about www

@Bob am sure if i change nameservers from host1 using ns1.example.com to host2 ns1.example.net , the website at host1 will no longer be accessible and will only be accessible from host2,so therefore, the website at host1 must be transffered to host2, it has always been that way for me

you just need to copy the A records before you swap the name servers
you should also swap the MX records are you risk losing email

Bob
9:31 AM
@Gandalf you're relying on your website host to manage DNS for you
that's different
and has nothing to do with the DNS protocol
it's just a hidden automagically-created A record
from the perspective of pure DNS, there's no reason changing nameservers should ever affect your website
but if you have different (automagic) records, well, they're different
but, yea, in the world of shared hosts and magic, what you describe is reasonably common

@Bob Wow, this is new to me,somewhat

Bob
I'll explain more in 2 hours, kinda busy

urgh what a fun problem
how to issue a saveState command to Virtualbox for windows shutting down

@Bob okay thanks

surely I can schedule a task to run on shutdown?

9:38 AM
isn't that a task scheduler thing?

9:49 AM
:D
there's no specific option for 'on shutdown'
it looks like i can tie it to an event, if I knew what event it was...
this rabbit hole maybe deep

just get the ID of the shutdown event from the eventviewer

yeah, cept what is that ID :D
seems to be 1074

Third of the time boring, third of the time regular, third of the time crazy

oh awesome. can't create scheduled tasks o_O
even as admin on this machine o_O

|_|  |_|
\_\  /_/
/_/  \_\
|_|  |_|

10:05 AM
ok the task works at least.
now just to reboot at some point and see if it works then
wait, is a reboot task different from a shutdown one? arugh.

10:52 AM
What's the point of not having the notch if you still have the hole? Might as well have the... uh... w(hole) notch!
plz appreciate good punz

Bob
@Gandalf Ok, so. At its most basic, a domain's parent has NS records telling the client where to look for the domain's records. The NS record points to another DNS server.
For your typical website, a domain (or subdomain) has an A record that tells you the IP address the domain resolves to.
In a pure DNS server, the parent points there by NS records and you define A records which map the domain to the host of your website (IP address). You can also define further NS records to point your subdomains to another nameserver, or A records to map your subdomains directly to IP addresses.
A lot of shared hosts will try to make this easier (and retain more control) by telling you to let them handle your entire domain. This is done by NS records on the domain's parent.
Then they can silently define the A record mapping to the IP address hosting your website.
But this is only a convenience offered by whatever infrastructure (usually some crappy control panel) the shared host uses.
You could just as easily define these A records independently.
If you do so, you can freely change the authoritative nameserver independently of the website host.
@Burgi @djsmiley2k If you do it on event ID you can't block the shutdown while your saving occurs.

huh... interesting point

Bob
If you can catch the WM_ENDSESSION message you can delay returning from it until your state saving is completed.
I don't think Task Scheduler offers that, but it'd be trivial to write a program that does it.
But apparently you only get 5 seconds.
You could also respond FALSE to WM_QUERYENDSESSION to prevent the shutdown? idk

11:14 AM
Uh, if my phone is jumping around with battery percentages and unable to measure them correctly, what do I do?
(it's less than a year old)

Bob
Ok, reading this and this, on WM_QUERYENDSESSION you'd ShutdownBlockReasonCreate and return TRUE. On WM_ENDSESSION you'd either initiate saveState and afterwards ShutdownBlockReasonDestroy/return, or (if you receive false because something else vetoed the query) just ShutdownBlockReasonDestroy
@djsmiley2k ^
I can do a dummy program if you want :P
@rahuldottech define "jumping"

HOLY SHIT!!!!
MY CHROMEBOOK ARRIVED!!!!

And has now been at 10 for several minutes
@Bob just went from 24 to 20 to 10 in under a minute

Bob
@rahuldottech I thought you meant up and down
eh, drain it to empty and charge it to full

11:39 AM
@Burgi congrats

it isn't the speediest of things

no suet? ;D

1 hour later…
12:52 PM
> Get-DhcpServerv4Scope : Cannot connect to CIM server. The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or
because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
uwot?

@Bob many thanks for taking your time to explain @Bob I appreciated.

@Burgi What're the specs of your machine?
I mean, whatever they are, it can run linux

@Burgi Not too bad!

its fracking sloooooooow

So... I texted the head of Hangouts :D
@forest they ain't killing it after all

these guys are beginning to sound like complete tools

@rahuldottech SE uses hangouts internally a lot

1:36 PM
@JourneymanGeek I know, I saw Nick Craver's tweets
@Burgi 'cuz they are
@Bob it jumped to 20%
instead of discharging
This can't be right
@Burgi linux!!

@rahuldottech it is running linux ;p

@JourneymanGeek Well, non Google linux!

1:53 PM
> Actress Gal Gadot was caught using an iPhone to promote a Samsung smartphone

Bob
@rahuldottech drain it to empty

@Burgi this is like the twentieth time that's happening with a celeb and an android phone

@rahuldottech ...didn't they axe GChat to move people to Hangouts in the last year or two?
I am very confused by Google these days

@bertieb Few months ago, yeah
@bertieb But I texted the Hangouts head and this is what the dude said, so...
yay

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#justgooglethings

Bob
2:22 PM
@bertieb Whatever happened to Allo/Duo? :P

Q: Help us improve the user profile and settings

DonnaYou might know the user profile and settings. It’s what appears after you click on your profile picture. Maybe you come here to track your Q&A activity or to update your Developer Story. Maybe you’ve stopped by to manage your email settings, opt-in to Beta features, or to get valuable flair...

@Bob Weren't those rolled-out in some markets?
I have no clue

Bob
@bertieb Are you a Google PM?

What Google need, is another chat product to unify all their chat products
@Bob lol

2:49 PM
something something XKCD.

@djsmiley2k "something something XKCD something" - Michael the Architect, the Good Place.

@Bob They stopped development on those

@Bob oh yeah, didn't we use Allo once?
me: hi
you: hi
/never looked at it again

@HornOKPlease Pretty much :D

do you remember AIM?

Oh how life has changed

Julia Silge & Jason Punyon on December 04, 2018

This past summer, we wrote our first blog post about comments on Stack Overflow, focusing on our initial work rating comments internally at Stack Overflow and what we learned. Since then, we’ve fielded this comment rating task more broadly in our community. This blog post shares some of what we are learning.

I (Jason) wrote a web application that presents a user with a comment thread from a post on Stack Overflow and asks the user to rate each comment in the thread as fine, unwelcoming, or abusive. Our first blog post shared results from when we asked employees at Stack Overflow, includin …

3:39 PM
Is it me, or is this dumb
'We could raise 40k by having parking wardens working nights!'
surely it's gonna cost more than that to have them lol

@djsmiley2k Maybe they mean raise 40k net?
In any case, if you are using fines as a revenue stream, you're governmenting wrong

well yeah
welcome to coventry council

stares at local council and their sudden changes of bus gates etc

Oh, we've been prosecuted for our bad managagement of bus lanes and cameras
lets put more in to raise money

!!s/coventry/$councilname/

3:50 PM
@bertieb welcome to $councilname council (source)

Hah
To be fair, it must suck to be in local government
"Do loads of services/maintenance/new infrastructure. Now do it with no money!"

4:03 PM
hmmm
@Bob you might know - any easy way to query a windows machine for it's hostname?

Bob
@djsmiley2k hostname

not the name as per the dhcp server (which I believe is wrong)
oh sorry, remotely ;D

Bob
lol

I know the IP :/

Bob
probably something with wmic?

4:03 PM
pretty sure someones put the wrong name in the dhcp record

Bob
or do you have powershell remoting enabled on your domain?

hmmm, maybe?

Bob
@djsmiley2k well you can get the netbios (all-caps) name with wmic computersystem get name
and you can connect to a remote system with wmic /node:
that should correspond to %computername%
but it'll be different from hostname which is not all-caps
otherwise you can use psexec to run hostname on the remote machine
or powershell remoting to ... run the same thing
Or .NET via PS remoting to run [System.Net.Dns]::GetHostName()
You can also get DNSHostName from wmic nicconfig
@djsmiley2k Yea I suggest hostname (with psexec), the .NET GetHostName() or wmic nicconfig get DNSHostName (or just wmic nicconfig get for the entire rows, per-NIC).
You can filter wmic results with where
Avoid the netbios all-caps names which truncate at 15 chars...

4:52 PM
Thanks
> Description = The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it
I guess that means I can't wmic
/me glares as administrator
It's going to be a fun case of seeing who has this stupid tablet

Bob
@djsmiley2k uhhh. /node: and /user:?
I find if all else fails psexec has the greatest chance
Assuming RPC hasn't been firewalled off

yeha, it may of been
/me will look more tomorrow
tho I've just remembered all the domain PC's should have landesk installed
that should at least Identify the user
and from that I cna find out what machine it is
or track down the mac to a switch port...

Bob
first thing I did with my play domain was enable GP push updates :P
makes it easy to change GPs (like enabling PS remoting...) and push them without waiting a day for every machine to pull

yah
sounds cool

Bob
@djsmiley2k Can you set an auto-shutdown and wait till they come complain? :D
or block it from internet access and ditto

5:01 PM
@Bob lol i can shut the port off, yes
:d

> ToDo:
- Deal with user headers
- Deal with hostname access lists
- Server security check!
- Extensions!
So... I wrote this when I was half asleep
And I have no idea what the last two mean

Bob
And you have no idea what any of it means?
...close enough
quick, forget the first two
alcohol can help

lol
Ahhhh I remember the third one too, now
No idea what the last one is about tho

5:26 PM
If this looks like overkill, that's because it probably is :p

5:44 PM
It looks like a phone on a tripod

Yeah. I just got a clip.
Nov 26 at 6:46, by bwDraco
On cell phone photography... I was thinking, is there such a thing as an Arca-Swiss-compatible cell phone clamp for tripod mounting? Turns out there is: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1352415-REG/sunwayfoto_cpc_02_smartphone_‌clamp.html
Took this long to ship.
But what is with this color cast?
(long exposure)

@bwDraco Uhhhh
Y'know
You'll find one of those attached to every $3 Selfie stick
That's what I use

6:02 PM
What colour cast? Looks as expected to me

But this isn't a $3 selfie stick. It's a nearly $800 tripod and head assembly.
@bertieb Looks a bit pinkish. Could be a white balance issue...
Was just curious about what my OnePlus 3T's lowly (by today's standards) camera can do...

@bwDraco You clearly have too much money
800USD = 56423.84 INR

Photography can be an expensive hobby

holy mf shit
@bertieb As a photographer myself, I'm well aware

@bwDraco A tiny bit, yea, I'd assume it's from the rightmost toy? Looks reflective

6:06 PM
Still. Wayyyy too much money

@rahuldottech What?

@bertieb A tripod for 56K rupees?

Eh, as a poor student I'd look on in envy perhaps, but it's best not to judge

That's bonkers

@rahuldottech The language seems disproportionate

6:07 PM
@bertieb Mhm, I suppose so

Bonkers I could give a pass to
But I guess it depends what you're using it for
If you're sticking a Leica and serious glass on it, $800 seems pretty reasonable

@bertieb That's enough money to pay for three years of state college here

Prices of things vary 'round the world
Sad (?) but true

Yeah, that's why I said that
So yeah. I stand by my words. I'd love to have even a fifth of that to spend on tech equipment

I guess that was bad white balance.

6:10 PM
I don't think it's fair to criticise other folks' spending

I'm not at all

We're to spending thousands on camera gear.

Perhaps I misread? It seemed that way

Hey, I encourage him to spend that much on his hobby. I totally would if I had the cash to.

Ah, okay
Saying "you have way too much money" seemed like it was carrying a judgement

6:12 PM
@bertieb Nah, I'm just wondering out loud about money and stuff
@bertieb Nah, it was just me joking about how he has more money than he knows what to do with
Possibly only funny to me, in my current financial situation

Ah right
I am a bit short of cash myself, so perhaps my trigger finger is itchier here than it might otherwise have been

(context: everything I've managed to save up after like four years of collecting pocket money is half of what he spent on a tripod, so... yeah)
Funny how the world works

You have money saved?!
:P
(this could quite quickly go in a Four Yorkshiremen oneupsmanship direction)

@bertieb FWIW, it's used to support $3,000+ camera gear.
(including a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens)

@bwDraco You shoot Pentax, right?

6:18 PM
Yup

I'm unfamiliar with their gear but unsurprised that they have high grade stuff
The only Pentax stuff I have are old manual lenses (maybe a body? I dunno)

Their selection is decidedly more limited as they've fallen by the wayside, but they do have some great gear.

@bertieb Yeah, lol. I was hoping to get a laptop before college. But my grandma says she'll get me one if I get >90% in grades, soooo

oooo

@bwDraco I looked up that lens last time (or so) you mentioned it, as it happens :P
@rahuldottech Ask @Burgi to send you his Chromebook when it arrives ;-P
@rahuldottech What model are you aiming for?

6:20 PM
The 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is a core part of any lens system, no matter which one you go with, whether it's Canon, Nikon, Sony, or Pentax. It's considered to be the standard lens for sports and event photography.

7 hours ago, by Burgi
MY CHROMEBOOK ARRIVED!!!!

@rahuldottech Oh, huh, so they weren't kidding

@bertieb No idea, but ideally an ultrabook which will last me through college with coding, photo editing and regular tasks

> coding, photo editing
You're going to need loads of memory and a quad-core chip.

@bwDraco I have a, uhhhhh
scurries off to check lenses
70-200 F4
And I don't think that's a cheap lens
Going to F2.8 would probably cost me a few kidneys
Lol
yup
best part of £2k

6:24 PM
The 70-200/2.8 is expensive no matter which system you're on. Most every major camera system has this lens or an equivalent, designed for professional sports and event photography.

Yeah
Those who need it can afford it
Well, in an ideal world

(Pentax's version currently runs $1,700)

I don't need it
This F4 does me fine on the rare occasions I use it

I've lived the last four years with a pretty powerful gaming laptop which my dad bought me shortly before my parents got separated. But TBH, the only thing the GPU has ever been used for is 3D renders for my best friend

Good specs but not terribly portable?

6:26 PM
@bwDraco mhm, yep
@bertieb Yeah. Terrible battery

(I had - still technically have - an old Dell gaming dealie which falls into that category)
M1730 or something? Or was that a plane?

With upgraded SSD and RAM

@bertieb Some systems have an f/4 version, like yours, which is smaller and cheaper but delivers nearly the same level of sharpness.

@bertieb lmao

@rahuldottech Measured in... seconds? :P

6:27 PM
@bertieb around 3 hours with light loads
Usually lesser for me

@rahuldottech As I happens I think I was right with M1730

The Y50 is an older gaming model.

@rahuldottech ! That's pretty good

@bwDraco Yeah, lol. It wasn't when I got it

@bertieb 2-3 hours is typical for a gaming laptop. They're not power-optimized the way modern thin-and-light systems are.

6:28 PM
looks at M1730 which won't even boot because the battery is so knackered
On an unrelated note, anyone wanna buy an M1730..?
It's a great, uhhhh, doorstop

HAMMERTIME!

Srsly Cavil?
dnuioagdbsiuyafgdsaiytufdcsaytdcsaodbiusaiuvHALT

HAMMERZEIT!

I thought it split on word boundaries
Oh well
@bwDraco Yea
Been a while since I used a gaming laptop :P
That said, the 1730 was a tank

Obviously, with the f/4 version, you get one less stop of light.
I have a 70-200/2.8 because I do sports photography for my college.

6:31 PM
Dual HDDs (hello, RAID0); SLI graphics; $silly RAM for its time
Ya

@bertieb lol @ $silly

Heh :P
I usually favour "$Texas" (after the SNL Celebrity Jeopardy gag) but switch it up now and again

@rahuldottech, if you're looking for a thin laptop for this application, I'd suggest a U-series Intel Core i7 processor (not Y-series!) or a Ryzen 7 processor, and at least 16 GB of memory. Photo editing requires a lot of memory.

@bwDraco tbh, i'm not too much bothered with thinness. Battery life, portability and performance are important tho

@rahuldottech One of the newer ThinkPads may actually make more sense.
T480?
Designed for business, a bit larger than typical ultraportable systems, but built like a tank and a very reliable performer.
Heck, you can hot-swap the battery because it has a second battery inside the chassis.
But it'll be harder to carry than, say, my HP ENVY x360, which comes in at 15mm thin. A thinner laptop is easier to pack into a bag and take with you.
I suppose "portability" is more about how easily you can carry it with you in general. The T480 is 20mm, so it's a lot thinner than the old ThinkPads of yore, but still thicker than an Ultrabook.
But you do get the legendary ThinkPad keyboard :)

6:53 PM
Hehehe. 100K Swag received - Another SU t-shirt, stickers, 1 SU Coffee Mug, 1 SU Beer Glass ;)

2 hours later…
8:48 PM
I'm leaving in about 20 minutes for some photography. Wish me luck :)

luck :)

@DavidPostill It appears you inadvertently edited your previous message ._.

Ah:) Fixed.

9:03 PM
@bertieb 80k mortgage, your turn

aww
@DavidPostill IIRC I got 2 T shirts. No Beer glass.

I have a Stack Overflow T-shirt from the #SOreadytohelp sweepstakes, but that's it.

i have my bottle i use at work
pen, stickers

(at least I can say I do have some Stack Exchange swag :p)

teeshirt osmewhere

9:08 PM
I'm a little curious if I get anything as a MSE mod

you get a large bucket and a shovel
branded of course

@JourneymanGeek You don't drink beer anyway, right? ;)

lul

9:30 PM
what about non-alcoholic beer?

@Burgi I saw him speak in Edinburgh
@djsmiley2k Student and credit card debt, no job
Back to you :P

he doesn't look how i imagined

He's a fun speaker

he is a little nervous

Tho a lot of it is covered in what-if / his blag
Yeah
Introverted geeky type doing public speaking
It suits him though; it'd ring false if he was boisterous :P
I'd go to one of his talks again
