@MichaelFrank Not sure if it was the 8800s. The G84 and G86 cards (8600, 8400) were the ones that had problems. As far as I can tell, the G80 cards were unaffected.

THIS IS SUCH BULLSHIT
GOOGLE IS KILLING HANGOUTS
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH
IT'S THE ONLY MESSAGING SERVICE I LIKE
Literally all you have to do to chat with someone is give them your gmail id
It's so convenient
You can access if from a phone or tablet or PC or whatever, it isn't linked to your phone number

Gee, Google is killing a service millions of people rely on?
That's not like them at all! /s

> The fact that it's taking till 2020 after announcing that Hangouts was being sunsetted so long ago means that Hangouts must still have a TON of users.

Google is literally killing their only messaging service that is actually popular. It is completely baffling.
I'm so pissed
So massively pissed

This is why I live a Google-free life.

I wanna say stuff that'll get me banned from chat but argh
@forest It's the only Google product I rely on

I'll say it for you. Fuck Google. :P
(Which is ironic because their FOSS contributions are awesome)

5:07 AM
Because it isn't linked to my phone, which means I can use it from anywhere, even when I don't have my phone, which I often don't (school, etc)
Also because almost everyone has a gmail id, so you don't need to install a separate app

I've never even used Hangouts. I don't even know if G+ is still a thing.

@forest It was completely separated from G+ years ago
I haven't used G+ in like eight years or something
ARGHHHHHH
And the call quality is better than any other service on poor connections

I think the same sort of thing happened with one Adobe product.

I mean, they spent years perfecting it and now they're just killing it off?
C'mon, man

For whatsit, the website framework building thing.
They encouraged people to make their website 100% dependent on it and rely entirely on it, just to shut it down when it was getting popular.
They got lots of hate for that. It's a big reason I don't rely on services from any one company, since vendor lock-in and the like screw you over when the service dies.

5:11 AM
@forest I've sortaa switched to matrix now, but you really can't expect non-technical people to use it
> How about make Hangouts INTO that new messaging service instead? It is the only messaging service I use to chat with all of my family and friends, it integrates well in gmail, history is searchable alongside my emails, and works across devices easily. There is no better or compelling alternative and they should build upon it instead of abandoning it!!!

I don't even use Matrix, I just use IRC, and XMPP in a pinch.
I only know Matrix from all those people with [m] appended to their nicks.

@forest again, can't rely on non-technical people to use those
This headline is satire, but it's exactly what Google has been doing all along
FFS they spent so much time and money advertising Allo and Duo, when they should've just worked on Hangouts
friggin idiots
ARGH

Yup
I feel you man.
This is why people should build an easy to use service off of a standard and established protocol like IRC or XMPP (the latter is probably more extensible for an easy to use service), so no one site shutting down would cause any harm.

Yeah, but...
idk

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they killed gmail one day.
After all, they are fundamentally an advertising company. Their search engine is there so they can advertise and sell personal information from you to advertisers. Their email service is there so they can scan for keywords and give you advertisements or sell your personal information to advertisers, etc. That's how they make money.
Chrome exists so people can be presented with Google services by default and so the omnibar can send what you type to them so they can sell it to advertising companies and give you advertisements. It's not like they're making free services out of altrusim.

6:00 AM

lmao so a cow just entered the garden
I'd share a pic, but I don't have my phone with me atm

@forest Google talk was xmppp
@MichaelFrank ah

@JourneymanGeek But it didn't use the federated XMPP infrastructure.
It was about as much XMPP as Kik is.

Who tf calls the opposite of inline functions "outline" functions?
Because my stupid book most certainly does.

O_o
I just call them regular old functions...

The author of this book is
so
ugh
All of this book was written with Turbo C++ standards
and then this woman
randomly starts mentioning all these examples
and then says
Note: The C++ features used in this example are not supported by Turbo C++. Use a modern compiler like Visual C++ instead!

pfft

But like. None of the other archaic legacy code runs in any modern compilers
She's bonkers. And her CS books are used in almost every school in the country.

Is this India?

so
should i get a resistance reading on both sides of a cap?

10:35 AM
It's ALIVE
not sure how, maybe resetting ecu worked (thanks @bertieb) but it's back
and now i know how easy it is to take off, I'm gonna replace those bulbs whern they arrive.

@djsmiley2k Woo \o/ I like a (relatively) simple solution :)
Ohhhh yeah
@FMLCat is around
I fitted that reverse camera and have the USB adapter you recommended :D

i just hoipe it's not some weird reoccuring thing.

(couldn't tag you before as you hadn't been in RA for a while)
Yeah

@forest I am from India and I am not sure which book he is talking about and how he can say that book is used in every school. So to make things clear what that guy said is not true

Worth giving the battery a charge while you're at it? Cold weather is not the friend of batteries
I know mine was low recently

10:42 AM
@dave I've heard from many people that India pretty much only uses TurboC/TurboC++ in schools and that's the reason it pumps out so many bad programmers (not saying they're all bad of course, but many are because of that).

Maybe some schools, But specifically I am talking about that book he said and When I was in school, We had a C++ course which was based on C++11 standard and CodeBlocks IDE

@djsmiley2k islawhatisthat
@dave Rightttt
It most definitely is. I organize city-wide programming competitions and symposiums and hackathons, and I know of only three schools in the capital city which don't use the book

Hi!
@djsmiley2k er, whut?
@djsmiley2k this may sound wierd but do a continuity test

@rahuldottech it could be a "state" thing
or different syllabus

10:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek It's a CBSE board thingy
And it's nation-wide
Unrelatedly...
@JourneymanGeek hah I feel so sorry for you, you have to live without chewing gum, lmaoooo sad lyf what good are those canine teeth of yours if you can't even chew gum lmao
I mean, sure, you get to learn how to shoot a gun or w/e but no gum?? xD
(are you annoyed yet?)

@JourneymanGeek well checking for resistance... does?
shows open circuit if there's no connectivity

@djsmiley2k it's... kinda, slightly different. Do a continuity test anyway.

Anyway, seemingly taking the board out, poking it a bit and putting it back in, as well as resetting the ECU and such fixed it

@djsmiley2k What board is this anyway? Your IoT project?

@rahuldottech k next time i will :D - what setting is that on the meter
@rahuldottech LOL no, it's the dash outta my car
it just 'died' last night when i was trying to come home
no speedo, nothing

10:54 AM
@djsmiley2k Continuity test is handy because you can test in-situ as well

@djsmiley2k ow, be safe

@rahuldottech tis fine now
i'm good at guessing my speed anyway

and i made sure all the external lighting was working, which is the important parts

Not that I had to do that when I discovered the boot loom was knackered with a capital 'f' when fitting the reversing camera

10:55 AM
@rahuldottech you don't miss it after longer than your lifetime ;p

@rahuldottech ooo that one
yeah my speaker isn't sounding on the multimeter anymore, which is weird
I can't remember how I muted it

@JourneymanGeek hah, chewing gum is great, it's what keeps me alive

Anyway, as loing as that stays fixed, that's saved me between £20 and £150 \oo/.

Today's HNQ list is a great read, if anyone is bored
I miss the IPS questions tho. Those were fun. Someone go tweet about it.

@rahuldottech you could go to the site ;p

the url is too long to type out

as I said elsewhere
I don't think SO's ready yet

but I was literally having this conversation elsewhere
Yup

Also, i really wanna get in on the new SO swag contest

DO IT! DOOOO IT

10:59 AM
But I don't have time, I have to study, and there are already a hundred answers which have been upvoted to infinity
:'(

@rahuldottech Okay, I have read the 8th edition of this book but It didn't said anywhere that I should use TurboC++ or Visual C++ . So shrugs

@dave Actually, it does. In several dozen places.
From the very introduction
Also, it teaches pre-98 standards of C++, which is goddamned ridiculous
Also, if even you have studied from the book, this does nothing but prove my point further
it's a terrible book, which has no business being as popular and widespread as it is
@forest In other better news tho, CBSE just switched to Python this year, I'm not sure if it's python2 or 3, but hey, almost anything is better than Turbo C++

@rahuldottech then may be you have read very old edition of this book

@dave I have the 2018 edition
I am in 12th grade right now
If you bet me $20, I will produce at least forty instances of Turbo C++ being mentioned in this book
So... yeah
(In not-so-great-news, iirc, a new textbook was also written by this complete witch of a woman, but I don't think most schools are using it)

And I was in 11th grade I used 8th edition of this book and didn't really saw the thing you are talking about
And I can't talk about 9th edition

11:07 AM
@dave Bet me $20 then
It's in every edition of the book
The first thing the book does is teach you how to set up Turbo C++ in DosBox, ffs

Can you tell the page no. then?
@rahuldottech Yes it does

But you didn't see that In "Introduction to C++" chapter it teaches how to use CodeBlocks and Borland C++ IDE?

@dave Borland is ancient

And CodeBlocks?

11:11 AM
@dave all code is according to Turbo C++ standards. I'm surprised you don't know that.

And can you please tell the page no? I would be happy to check it out again

Dude, I'm done here. I frequently participate in hackathons and programming competitions, I know several languages and have several active projects, I know that I'm talking about here.

@rahuldottech seconds til the bash?

@djsmiley2k yerp
I don't think I'll be able to participate this year tho, because exams, which is a bummer
!!s/that/what/

@rahuldottech Dude, I'm done here. I frequently participate in hackathons and programming competitions, I know several languages and have several active projects, I know what I'm talking about here. (source)

11:16 AM
@rahuldottech I am not arguing with you but just asking the page no to be aware of what you were saying

@dave I have better things to do. Go read through the first chapter, it'll be mentioned in several places
If you have the 12th grade book handy, I'll be happy to provide you with several pages where Turbo C++ is mentioned

Yes! I have 11th book

@dave I said 12 ^
I have no idea where my book from last year is

But earlier you said it is mentioned in every edition

dude no offence but are you daft

11:24 AM
@rahuldottech this

@dave so?
It is in every edition of the 11th grade book, and every edition of the 12th grade book
If you have the 12th grade book handy, I can provide you with page numbers
How hard is it to get?

B
*brb
Oh Yeah! I just realized I have 12th grade book too

@dave great
Vol 1?

I have both
Vol 1 and 2

Great
On pages 3 and 7, you will see notes about latest C++ standards
Firstly, they got it wrong, there have been two new standards after C++11: 14 and 17
Secondly, this note is there because this code won't work in Turbo C++, the compilwer according to which all other code in the book is given
Next, see Program 1.1 on page 15

11:33 AM
I'm still amazed that India even uses TurboC++.

This code will not work in any compiler except Turbo C++
@forest don't interrupt, someone is wrong on the internet here
;P

:P

sigh
So...

Next, see program 1.2 on page 19, same problem

@rahuldottech's school sucks
@dave might not ;p

11:34 AM
@forest I don't and don't know the folks who use it either

or they're different ages

@dave Next, see program 1.3 and 1.4 on pages 24 and 25
See Program 1.5 on page 26
See 1.6 on page 29
See everything on random numbers on page 37
See 1.11 on page 39
See 1.12 on page 40
Do you want me to go on?
See footnote on page 44

@rahuldottech heh, I managed to throw together something for the watch contest meta.stackexchange.com/a/319247/135565 ;p
I probably shoulda used colours other than black....

@rahuldottech And on this page I saw Please remember that in order to test C++ features, your compiler must implement C++11 standard and but nothing about TurboC++

@rahuldottech Dude, "go and play in traffic", really?
Not sure what you're trying to say there but the tone is incredibly harsh

@bertieb ...?

@bertieb It's obviously a joke.

11:47 AM
Something something something, CoC

It's not an offensive joke lol

I didn't mean it harshly, sorry if it came off that way.

Unless I missed something

Given the tone earlier in the conversation, it didn't seem like a joke to me
It's grand, I'm not offended, just... consider what you're saying

I just meant it as "yeah you do you I'm done with this stupid conversation"
@bertieb Fair enough, my bad, I'll be more careful in the future

11:48 AM
Cool
Meeting adjourned, thanks for coming :)

@rahuldottech ok dude, you're being a little too antagonistic.
I know school sucks buuuut...
that's just not how we talk to each other :(

I'm sorry
It's just. We know is sucks. This textbook sucks. @dave should know that is sucks. I don't know why he's defending it
That said, I did go too far, and I apologize

I mean it's just making a big deal out of nothing.
I can't for the life of me see anything offensive when I scroll up.

They're right, I was wrong

I said thin, not thick.
meh

11:52 AM
@forest We deal with things like adults.
4

We talk it out, let people know what each other expect... and it works

(even though I'm not one)

Perhaps I hang around the wrong people, but can someone enlighten me as to what @rahuldottech said that was supposedly offensive?

Now, I disagree with the tone that rahul took.
I let him know, he agreed.
And guess what? That's how we deal with things here.
I empathise with the sheer horribadness of @rahuldottech's textbook, let him know that, well, he's a little too frustrated, and he cools down.

11:54 AM
Where I'm from, we just ignore slightly harsh tones. Unless someone is getting all in your face and threatening you, you just take it like a man. Or ignore it. Or leave.
I must be totally out of tune with modern culture.

For that matter, I don't really think that calling someone a thin skinned sissy is appropriate either.
naw, just here.

@forest No, just this room

And it works really well for us.

@rahuldottech I guess that makes sense.

@forest We don't care about the CoC as much as our own set standards for what is acceptable

11:55 AM
^

gendered slurs most definitely aren't

We've had these standards longer than the COC
and its a little more than "be nice"

@rahuldottech Well that's why I refrained from using pussy as an insult. :P

@forest great, let's stop talking about it now.

@forest lemme put it this way.

11:56 AM
kk

As far as this room goes, most of us know what's what. We've basically worked through an understanding of how we deal with things and since we're on the same page, we can handle things with little drama, like adults.

yerp, let's move on

> Videos are like raisins. Raisins are fine. They’re fine! They’re a great snack when you’re in the mood and want something small to nibble.

But when you bite into a chocolate chip cookie expecting to taste chocolate and realize it was an oatmeal raisin cookie all along, it’s a revolting experience. You’ve been tricked! It feels like that when you click a link expecting an article and it’s a video instead. Also, if your doctor told you he was switching you to an all-raisin diet, you might have concerns.
This is a great quote
Ew, I hate videos for news
takes wayyyyyy too long to get to the point
With a news article I can take away all essential information in less than like two minutes

Like it or not, online advertising is a competitive venture. If you don't follow your competitors in running high-impact ad units, you will eventually see lower and lower revenue (even if your number of unique impressions per day remains steady) as advertisers want to make a strong impact and therefore pay less and less for simple banner ads with time.

@bwDraco Rephrase to "Interesting article on the shift from written to video formats in journalism" and I'll star
