12:00 AM
I kept reading GDB as gnu debugger
and I was confused to its use as a recovery tool

@Aibobot lmao

As an adult, you can do stuff like this, instead of maths homework

@noitsbecky what is this crazy stuff why dont i go to parties what it my life

@rahuldottech I didn't go to the party, I ran the party.
Well, the visuals anyway.

@noitsbecky cooooooooooooool

12:10 AM
I wasn't part of the band likes, and wasn't responsible for sound either. Although there's an injoke that one day everyone will be part of Hawkwind...
Also, one of the plus sides of your main control cable failing, is you get to set everything to auto, and basically walk onto the stage with the band and hang out with their roadies in the middle of the show. Like so:

@noitsbecky ...

That was a fun weekend. If not incredibly stressful.

how do you get gigs like these?

@rahuldottech You get girls. I get to do techy stuff.

@noitsbecky Haven't had a girlfriend in a year, so...
idk
Admittedly, I haven't been looking to date because of studies :[

12:16 AM
I really wish I could have recorded/live streamed the whole show. But our primary equipment didn't arrive in time, and our backup equipment broke earlier in the day. And I was too stressed out by then to bother with Plan C.

@noitsbecky You could've streamed from your phone. Crappy quality, but still

Bob
@noitsbecky @rahuldottech @MichaelFrank The F/OSS approach is testdisk. Preferably run on a cloned (ddrescue) image rather than the damaged drive.

@rahuldottech I did stream from my (secondary) phone, as that was plan B. That's also what broke during the day, and using my primary phone (plan C) was what I couldn't be arsed with because I wanted to be able to walk around and take pictures/videos/actually use my phone myself.

Bob
photorec explicitly only tries to recover based on file signatures

@Bob Ah yes, testdisk is good.

Bob
12:20 AM
testdisk tries to repair the filesystem

As usual, Bob's right.
Bob knows stuff.

IIRC, testdisk and photorec are by the same (group of?) dev(s)

Bob
Yup.
Two tools for different purposes.
But GDB etc are better if there's severe corruption, AFAIK

@Bob apparently lacks HFS+ and APFS support. That said, I have no idea what those are, but GDB supports them ;P

Bob
It's been a while since I last needed to do this.
backups ftw

12:23 AM
@Bob Same
Or just increased reliability of drives (SSDs in particular)

> primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software: certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

@rahuldottech So does R-Studio. They're Apple filesystems.
I mean the latter is pretty obvious, APFS = APple File System

@noitsbecky Yeah, I'd figured ;)

HFS(+) is Apple's old filesystem

Bob
@rahuldottech Usually the optimal approach using purely free tools is testdisk followed by fsck (thouch MS chkdsk is better). Repair partition tables followed by filesystem. IIRC testdisk does limited things with some filesystems too.
Not as powerful as the paid tools, but I don't know of any free ones that do better.
Of course, the first thing you should do is ddrescue. Even if you're using paid tools.
No amount of smarts in a tool will help if your hardware is dying by the minute.

12:27 AM
@Bob Interestingly, the first tool I ever tried for data recovery was testdisk back in seventh grade. Couldn't figure it out, went to a shop, saw them use GDB, and that's what I've used since

@Bob Agreed. Although R-Studio does have built-in imaging capabilities (with some tuning options, such as retry count, I/O block size, etc.) ddrescue is pretty much the gold standard.

@rahuldottech bookmarked

@Bob there's a NTFS specific one that someone on SU wrote I have been meaning to try

Even if it's just corruption with no hardware failure 99% of the time I'll still prefer working on an image, just don't need to connect it up to a Linux box to ddrescue it.

@rahuldottech testdisk and photorec have step by step guides

12:30 AM
@Bob I did this! Then I copied the .img file cause I figured it'd be better than accidentally destroying my only copy lol

Bob
@noitsbecky True, that would be an advantage. Now if you'd told me this 5 years ago before I started my current backup schedule, I might've actually bought it :D
@MichaelFrank Yup. That's a good idea too.
Image to protect from hardware failure. Copy of image to protect from human (or software) failure.

@Bob Triple your storage costs.
I need to stop looking at storage costs as $ per GB/TB just for the drive itself when buying storage...
I mean I'm entirely used to thinking that way when costing storage in business/enterprise, nobody quotes storage costs as just (cost of drive ÷ size of drive)
But thinking "Buying this £250 Samsung SSD will actually cost me £400 in reality" is just so unappealing
Especially when you really want that Samsung SSD

Bob
@noitsbecky wellllll I do kinda have two unopened 8 TB HDDs

0_0

@Bob I only have one opened 8TB HDD available. And it's full. I yanked it out of my server's backup RAID-Z array several years ago and have been using it as an external drive since. In hindsight, probably not the smartest idea, as the array has now been non-redundant for years... but then again it's just a backup array and the primary is RAID-Z3

12:40 AM
A TOTAL OF 6 CORES!!!!! 8GB RAM!!!!!!

OK that was rude.
It's cooler than mine, sure.

@noitsbecky ehh. Not like I can afford anything better :P

As for better....

Love the Duplo

@MichaelFrank :D
@noitsbecky "cooler" -- it has FIVE external silent fans!!
Beat that! /s

12:46 AM
Uhh... it's not a 360 photo, not even close....
Maybe 120 at best
@rahuldottech Mine runs at about 45-50'c internal temperature

@noitsbecky Mine is currently at 57.05. This is not ideal
I should re-position the fans

@rahuldottech Uhh isn't it open air cooling?
I mean mine runs at a circulating air temp of 45-50'c. Actual heat generating components (CPU/well, just the CPU really) run at 70'c+
Actually the RAID cards do generate a lot of heat too, they have their own heatsink and fan but don't report chip temperature.

@noitsbecky Ah, no, the temp I mentioned is the CPU temp
@noitsbecky For cooling I literally took the bottom plates of the laptops off, and placed $6 cooling fans under them

@rahuldottech Oddly the video capture quality on my phone turned out to be better than the stills images I took on the night. That said, Youtube makes you wait 24 hours to activate streaming on your account (not a clue why, but it meant I couldn't use it), my streaming audience had never heard of Twitch, and Facebook streaming defaulted to non-HD despite the input being 4K and the output being 200Mbps wifi.

@noitsbecky Facebook sucks :/
Also, you didn't have a YouTube account before that?

12:59 AM
But in ideal circumstances, there's really no reason for streaming quality off a phone to suck. Heck, my phone does 4K, my DSLR does 1080p.
@rahuldottech I've had a Youtube account for ages, but you have to activate live streaming separately, which is click a button and wait 24 hours.

@noitsbecky Ah, TIL

Granted the sensor quality on my DSLR will be the crap out of any phone even at half the resolution in poor lighting conditions, but since I was running the lighting I can't possibly call the lighting conditions poor while retaining my dignity :-P
Also phones these days tend to have much better low-light optimized lenses than DSLR kit lenses, and just about any non-kit lens for less than $1000, and I didn't even have a generic cheapo low-light lens on me that day.

@noitsbecky Hmm, CPU at 46C, Internal at 53C, as reported by HWmonitor

@rahuldottech My SSD runs hotter than that.
Which is part of the reason it sucks and I want to replace it
@Bob do you own/use any M.2/NVMe SSDs?

@noitsbecky For some reason, WHmon doesn't detect an internal temp sensor on the second windows laptop, but CPU is surprisingly at 33C
HDD on 1st PC at 42C, 32C on the second one

1:06 AM
Erf. It's been 15 years since I last got to run a DMX lightshow, it was so much fun.
@rahuldottech Because most laptops don't have ambient temperature sensors aka mainboard temp sensors.

@noitsbecky Oh, TIL

In fact I've never had one that does.

The older of my two laptops does. The 2005 one. Not the 2007 one. FML.

Do you need it though?

@MichaelFrank Given ambient air doesn't really circulate in laptops, I'd say no.
Closest mine has is a chipset temp sensor

1:08 AM
@noitsbecky How do you tell which one is which?

Hah one of my videos of the show has me accidentally loading MPC-HC on the projection behind the band. Twice.
@rahuldottech Chipset temp sensors are usually reported as... chipset temperature?

@noitsbecky ^

@rahuldottech Shrug. Blame your OEM for not labelling them in a sensible manner. Though TZx suggests they're both generic mainboard/ambient temp sensors.
Although generally a thermal zone is defined as such because it's positioned at/near something whose temperature is of importance.

@noitsbecky Cool, thanks
LMAO look at this processor
AHAHAHHAHAHHA USD 10.00 on amazon
My laptop cooling fans cost more than my laptop CPU
HOW SAD IS MY LIFE

More Ahaha because you can buy it, because it goes into a socket

1:14 AM
> More Buying Choices
$5.33

My first ever laptop had a socketed CPU, which I chose in the hopes of upgrading it one day... like that ever happened

@noitsbecky I know. Still saying. Worth... like... nothing
@noitsbecky also, how tf are they selling "refurbished" laptop CPUs?

@rahuldottech Meh, I have things that are worth like nothing, why does that make your life sad?

@noitsbecky Things worth nothing aren't bad. My primary home server being worth <$25 and being as old as me and less powerful than a Raspberry Pi zero? Sad.
Actually, not sure on the last one

@rahuldottech Pfft. I could send you a free laptop that's more powerful if you wanted. Then again, what does a teenage kid need with multiple home servers when he should be chasing girls and doing drugs and alcohol?

1:17 AM
> 1GHz single-core CPU
512MB RAM

My primary home server was an old HP desktop for years...

At least it beats the $5.00 Raspberry Pi :D
@noitsbecky Hey, can't I have both? :P

@rahuldottech Girls drugs and alcohol? That's three things. Combining all 3 at the same time may not be wise at your age.
Even at my age care should be exercised when combining more than two of the above.

@noitsbecky Since I have what is arguably the most important set of exams of my life coming up (in India, they decide everything about your future), I'm abstaining from all of those right now. At least lemme have some sweet tech which I can admire :P
@noitsbecky lmao
Also, I've like... never gotten drunk? Someday soon.

@rahuldottech One thing you realise after sufficient years of adulting is your school exam results eventually count for basically nothing.

1:20 AM
@noitsbecky everywhere else in the world, yeah

Everywhere in the world full stop.

Here -- no college, no jobs, without good grades

HAMMERTIME!

HAMMERTIME!

Huh. Both bots are alive. And both lag.
I should probably do something about that
##die

1:22 AM
@noitsbecky Well, I certainly hope that's true. But it's not what I've seen. I know brilliant people who can't get jobs 30 years after high school ended because of their grades in 12th

@noitsbecky I'm afraid I can't let you do that, noitsbecky

@IAmABot I should probably do something about that too

oooh, we need another sentient bots conversation

@rahuldottech Those people... are doing it wrong.

Context: 1, 2
@noitsbecky It's just how this place works :/
I'd still much rather live here than ever go to the US, though

1:24 AM
Not that I'm suggesting they do it, but nobody checks your school results after 30 years. You can write whatever the heck you want on your CV and even if they do ask, forging it aint hard. Or they could apply for jobs in a different country, if they're really that "brilliant"
@rahuldottech There is that, I suppose

There was a time when I crazily wanted to go to MIT or one of the Ivy Leagues. Not anymore. Man, that country is really effed up

@rahuldottech Don't let that stop you, MIT or Ivy Leagues are one of the least effed up parts of the country, and you'll be hanging out with some of the least effed up people. Possibly less effed up than ones you're surrounded by now.
They'll definitely have more alcohol too

@noitsbecky I don't think I'll be going out of the country for undergrad (or if I even can), but I'm certainly still considering them for further studies and research.
Let's see. I've always wanted to end up as a professor, eventually
Dunno how that'll work out. I wanna do lots of different stuff first, though
Welp. I can dream.

@rahuldottech like girls, drugs, and alcohol. Right?

Aside from sleeping with girls 1/4 your age I've never particularly been attracted to a career in academia.

1:29 AM
@MichaelFrank lmao

This sorta shit is just way more fun.
So much fun.
I miss it already.

@noitsbecky Ah well. Let's see.

@rahuldottech Maybe not as fun as sex drugs and rock and roll... wait, it basically is rock and roll... sex drugs and alcohol?

@noitsbecky niice

@Nick Cleaning up and untangling the cable salad at 2am... not so nice. My fingers are still sore :-(

Bob
1:44 AM
@noitsbecky Lenses maybe, but DSLRs kinda win in low-light by default cause of the much bigger sensor, no?
@noitsbecky Just one. 960 Pro 512 GB, used as my OS drive on my desktop.
I have 3 (?) mSATAs, 2x 840 EVO 250 GB and 1x weirdochinese 120 GB.
and quite a few SATA 2.5"
@noitsbecky Hmm.
##die

##ping
@Bob YOU KILLED HER
!!ping

@rahuldottech pong

Bob
@noitsbecky What did you dooooooooooooo

@Bob With an equivalent aperture lens, yeah. But phones come with F/1.7 to 2.0 lenses these days, whereas standard kit lenses are in the F/3.5-4.0 range. That's 1/4 the light coming in, before you even start zooming and quartering it again. A 22mm F/2.0 non-zoom prime lens for a DSLR costs £200, and a 24mm F/1.8 costs £520, and those don't have image stabilization either whereas smartphones do.

Bob
@noitsbecky Ah.

1:49 AM
Getting a F/1.7 22mm for a non-full frame (aka sub-$1000 and super large) DSLR is basically impossible, as is getting image-stabilized wide aperture primes.
Which means you basically need a $3000 full-frame DSLR with sensor-shift image stabilization and a $600+ lens to get equivalent light input to that of a high-end smartphone, at least at wide-angle, although you'll see the benefits of the larger sensor before then.

OH MY GOD

On the other hand if you want F/1.4 with image stabilisation at 85mm that's impossible on a smartphone and easy on a DSLR
@Bob That's only half of it.

The microfiber cloths which came with my new spectacles have this AMAZING industrial slightly-rubber-like smell
I'm dying
THIS IS AMAZING

Bob
Stop huffing cloth

That's what I do'd (the installed and ran all the lighting systems for that show)

Bob
1:53 AM
@noitsbecky I'd watch that but I'm kinda at work right now :P

@Bob no

Due to timing constraints only one rental shop was open, and they only had 20m cables. So I had to use 20m cables for every 20cm cable run.
90% of the cabling required was between 20cm and 4m, with only two exceptions being one 8m and one 15m. Had to use 20m cables for everything - power and data.
(Even the power cables were 20m only)

Bob
o_O

GOD. DAMN. HOMEWORK.

2:08 AM
@noitsbecky Someone has wayy too much free time :P

@rahuldottech Or an important job to do and too little time to do it in.

@noitsbecky I think he means the effort you put into that Paint diagram.

@noitsbecky o0

@MichaelFrank I had to draw the diagrams to send to the venue/event staff for planning purposes anyway. And had to do most of them in mspaint due to time constraints as well

@noitsbecky ah. I thought you made them just now

2:15 AM
@rahuldottech Just the bit whinging about cable lengths

3:06 AM
@noitsbecky tbh, that kinda makes sense
unless you're going to make your own cables

@Bob Also did drugs. Always did drugs. Not sure if helped or made things worse tbh.
Erf why are there no good non-Apple Thunderbolt docks
You can either get a decent TB3 dock for a Macbook with proper DisplayPort MST or some lame USB-C dock for Windows PCs where you get one USB-C alt mode HDMI output and everything else is USB DisplayLink
Erf why's Amazon oneboxing broken

3:22 AM
It's been broken for aaaaaages
Or it was disabled... I can't remember now.
Something to do with referral links maybe?

It was working when I got kicked for oneboxing a giant tub of lube.

Yea, that wasn't exactly recent.

Well, within the last few months
It's not like I need 4K60 outputs or anything but running 4x FHD displays over USB? No thanks. Especially when one is a 120Hz gaming monitor.
Maybe if the rumours about Apple switching away from Intel CPUs are true Intel will finally start promoting decent TB3 adoption in the Windows ecosystem?

3:47 AM
Huh Plugable has a USB-C DisplayLink docking station that claims to do 2x 4K60.
40Gb/s Dare speed and 5Gb/s Date Speed.
!!facepalm

Although 5 gigababes per second date speed would be powerful performance beyond imagination...

@noitsbecky it always pisses me off that you can't use micro SD + regular SD at the same time
Since they don't have separate connections

11:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, sorta
Something like this:

12:01 PM
I can't do it anymore
Being still somewhat reluctant to open any port on my host, I wonder if I could use a second VM to act as a firewall (behind my router), e.g. running pfSense, creating a virtual DMZ with a different subnet to separate the guest from my LAN. Any thoughts out there on how this could be achieved? — silentsurfer 4 hours ago

12:15 PM
@djsmiley2k TWSS
@rahuldottech Some of them do. In fact I'd say of the ones I've had, about 2/3rds do?
@JourneymanGeek You understand my "All the Windows TB docks are DisplayLink" pain then

@noitsbecky oh. I was going to mention car reverse camera displays are cheap and wonderfully shoddy

12:31 PM
@JourneymanGeek In-triguing
I could use a reverse camera display thing
One issue would be where to mount it

I could use a car. Or a license.

2 wheels > 4 wheels :P
(well, sometimes)

@bertieb it's what I have on my lab stack sans camera
And they're a simple install iirc

Yea
My plan had been to get one of those Android / Linux car computer stero replacement dealies
Because many offer RCA in for reverse camera
But they are still £££
So not a justifiable expense at the mo
(my car is a glorified A → B 'er)

12:54 PM
@bertieb in traffic yes
in the snow...

I was going to say that, but IIRC @noitsbecky rode in the snow earlier this year / last year

why do you need a reversing camera? do you not have mirrors?

Something something something, thin tyres cut in?
@Burgi Can't see well out read window because I have the saloon version of the Focus
rear window even

is that a thing? o.O

I'm much more hesitant than I was in my Peugeot
Yup
It basically looks like a Mondeo from the outside

12:57 PM
huh.... it looks like a small Mondeo

(to save the rest of chat GISing)
Not mine but similar

it must be the rarer of the body types

Correct, by far

i have seen estate versions but AFAIK never seen a saloon edition

I'm getting better but still feel like I'm very close, even when I'm not
You may have seen them about and not realised they were Focuses (Foci?)

12:59 PM
true#

After I got mine I noticed another just along from my folks' in the same colour :P
But yea, used to be able to get my Peugeot into tiny spaces (granted it was a slightly shorter car as well); now, not so much...

i have noticed that every fiesta i see these days appears to be a black 2013 model

Yeah, those do seem popular around here too

@Burgi it's useful in a lot of situations.

@JourneymanGeek only ones i can think of is if you are driving a van
the range rover has 8 cameras and you can do multi cameras on the same display
irc they have limited pan, zoom and tilt functions too

1:04 PM
The Leaf does a top-down view thing which is pretty cool
Even if it feels a bit like playing old-skool GTA

1:16 PM
the adverts for the leaf are weird
they say "one pedal to accelerate and stop you"
its that all accelerator pedals?

Yeah, one pedal apparently
You press down to speed up and ease up to slow down
I guess
It must have paddle brakes or something
(I thought by law cars in UK are supposed to have at least two independent methods of braking)
The Leaf I was in was an older model which had the brake, still

@bertieb s/rode/slid sideways for about 10 metres then gave up/

> However, Nissan says the introduction of a one-pedal system - in which a button press turns the accelerator pad into an "e-Pedal" that can start, accelerate, brake and stop the vehicle - will provide added energy efficiency gains.

> Motorists can, however, drive with both a separate accelerator and brake pedal if they prefer.
@noitsbecky Heh, I thought I remembered that being the case but didn't want to assume :P

@bertieb 2 wheels are also easier to nick.

True
Been told to watch out for the trick where someone nicks your keys at a set of lights and legs it
If you go after them, the bike's nicked (by someone who's had the keys handed off to them)
Probably a bigger deal in London than here

1:24 PM
@bertieb If it were me, being uber lazy and uber ghetto and uber frugal, I'd glue an old Android phone to the back end somewhere and use wired or wireless IP webcam to some sort of display at the front (or another Android phone on a dashboard mount)

@noitsbecky Ya, a good thought- there are kits for that going on eBay AFAICT at a skim

@bertieb Yikes. Never heard of that one, but I'll be sure to be aware of it from now on... I've had my keys nicked once already (while parked, my own fault for leaving them in the bike) so I'm paranoid about chaining it up now. I need the ignition and steering lock assembly replaced again anyway, because someone had another go at it and broke it again, but cba with the £360 cost.

(wireless camera with Android app I guess)
@noitsbecky Bleh, that sucks :-\

@bertieb Actually, now that I think about it you can get a USB-OTG Android camera (for different purposes, but I'm sure the only change you'd need is lens/form factor) for like £11.99
Micro-USB plug (and full size USB if you want it in a PC), several metres of cable, and you can use it as a plug-and-play remote camera on any Android phone.

Aye, might be worth seeing if there's a reversing-specific model of that actually
Because of wider lens and night LEDs

Muh ears!

I had this. Now that you mention it, it's got built in LEDs for lighting too, but again you'd want a different size/form factor. But at the end of the day, the actual cost of the electronics/construction is evidently cheap enough to be manufactured by no-name OEMs and sold as a sub-£20 product all-in.
There you go... £14.99

Noice
Cheers!

amazon.co.uk/s/… £59.99 with a screen/entertainment system mount

(EasyCap looks cool too amazon.co.uk/EasyCap-USB-Video-Capture-Adapter/dp/B0034KJ19O but another thing to throw in the mix)

1:31 PM
I wouldn't rely on the £14.99 one lasting too long if you mount it externally, but that was a 5 second search and I'm sure you can find cheaper and/or better on Ebay. Amazon is generally fairly poor for low-priced low-margin electronics vs Ebay due to flat fees vs. percentage fees.

Hmm, will have a think about this
Yeah
I'm tempted to go for the form factor that integrates with the license plate light...
Only thing is I'm not sure about how janky some of these are with Android

But anytime someone mentions remote camera I instantly think "old Android phone" because a) Just about every Android phone of any age has a camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a USB port, and b) Just about every Android phone of any age has a screen.

Advantage of a dedicated screen is that it locks on to the signal pretty quick
I actually have a USB inspection camera and had issues with it with at least one tablet
Aye

@bertieb I've never had an issue - plug it in, and if it's set to auto-launch it's up on screen in less than 5 seconds, barely slower than the built-in camera. My main phone's pretty powerful though.

@noitsbecky Auto-launch, you say

1:34 PM
Mind you if you go wired, there'll be conflict with power for charging your phone.

That could work well
Yeah
I'd only really need it for reversing into tight spaces
Which isn't every day
So could connect on-demand

@noitsbecky none of mine do :'(

@bertieb i thought he'd gone on a mental retreat

@Burgi Yup. Now he's back on a mental offensive!
Er, in the opposite sense of 'retreat'

why you would need a reversing camera on a bike is utterly beyond me

Given the context, 'offensive' might not be totes appropes

@bertieb its linus, it probably is offensive

Soz I would have had that video done that a lot quicker/better if it weren't for me having cracked the screen on my main secondary phone doing the gig on Sunday.

@noitsbecky Ooh, that's really quick; more than enough for my needs :D Cheers!

Apparently running around in a panic climbing stepladders with a spanner and camera battery in the same pocket as your phone (which already has a cheap, badly mounted replacement display off Ebay) is prone to damage...
Literally only replaced the screen two weeks ago -_-
Mind you I wonder if the original is now dry enough to work again...

1:53 PM
@noitsbecky for a cat you have surprisingly human arms

@Burgi I borrowed a hoomin to hold the phone for me.

or have you killed someone, scooped out their innards and now use it as a bio-mech suit
