@Burgi this is a thing google.com.sg/…

are they rude in SG?
chinese tourists i mean

@Burgi sometimes
its probably worse cause singapore mostly ethnic chinese.

my girlfriend has a theory that it is something called "little emperor syndrome"

as we joke "The local chinese don't like the mainland ones, the local indians don't like the ones who just came in.... and the malays are too laid back tom care" ;p
this, unrelatedly, is funny
hmm

12:44 AM
i love my work but in times like this (while im waiting for the pc to be done) i check the chat and the website
it keeps me awake
if im not entretained by work i start to get hungry and lazy!

lol
that's kinda the point of chat

well stack is fulll of interesting questions
if i start to getting bored i just look other stack webs and find something to read

kind of like wikipedia discussion website

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?

12:52 AM
IM ENTRETAINED PLS BRING MORE QUESTIONS!!!

@Bob ^ ;p

thats a cute dogie
i have a parrot
an old one
27 years old

ash is 12, going on 13
Bless him, doing ok other than that bag leg, and old age related grumpyness.

1:07 AM
he looks healthy ! and happy too!
may he live more years with excelent health!!!!

1 hour later…
Bob
2:27 AM
hi

2:41 AM
Hello, World! From Coffee Lake!

That's a lotta coffee

Bob
@allquixotic :D
@allquixotic benchmarks? :P

quick question, is there a way to force a program to open twice rather than replacing the current instance. windows 10, the program is lego digital designer

no luck unfortunatley
middle click does nothing and the keyboard shortcut opens a new firefox tab
oh im only using one desktop btw

2:56 AM
@Bob after I update the BIOS and make sure all my drivers are up to date
early going so there might be newer drivers on MSI's site than through WU

eh nm

@CoderCat in the absolute general case, you can't force a program to open more than once; it can either (1) break (by design or otherwise) if you manage to make it open more than once, or (2) implement checks and countermeasures to infinity to prevent you from trying to overcome any limitations that are designed to prevent it from opening twice
only true way on a single computer would be to run a VM

ok

@Bob ^^ dafuq
also what is a Gaming Lan Manager
I don't think I need that dicking with my traffic either

Bob
3:13 AM
@allquixotic lol, local QoS?

@Bob yeah, weird, and totally unnecessary with my R9000's dynamic QoS / probably some kind of qdisc, whether codel or something else that's tuned to your bandwidth

3:37 AM
@Bob the Intel 8265 (I think...) sounds good :P
it's using the MS bluetooth stack

Bob
3:54 AM
@allquixotic could still help a bit if you want absolute priority for a specific application - without DPS no router-level QoS can do that
but most modern queuing seems to optimise well enough for the general case
@allquixotic just about everything uses the MS stack nowadays, no? :P
the others are csr harmony and widcomm (broadcom), iirc, and even then I'm not sure if they're really used

4:21 AM
@Bob except CSR Harmony / BlueSoleil

5:13 AM
@Bob @allquixotic and common modern day shovelware for ricers ;p

5:27 AM
I'm surprised the game is this memory-intensive.
(not planning to test this out myself)

There I provided a pseudo code that is the proposed solution. But, that is not work for some mistakes, that I can't detect.

5:59 AM
^^^ @djsmiley2k
This took a while to upload. Not sure why it didn't fully utilize my bandwidth (peering congestion?)

6:19 AM
This is my first gaming video.

3 hours later…
9:27 AM
nice, it's weird... i can't tell any real difference between that and games i was playing 5 years ago
graphically

Ave
10:11 AM
oh neat
magisk got updated to not cause bootloops
too bad it softbricked my phone twice though

2 hours later…
12:24 PM
random question but anyone know of some kind of USB room thermometer?

12:37 PM
@djsmiley2k Like a sensor? There's a bunch on eBay and Amazon, but I've no experience or specific recommendation to make

yeah was just lookin on amazon

user226528
2:01 PM
@djsmiley2k Hi, Tim. Can I ask you a question about a couple of days ago?

mSure
also using mah name is odd dude :P

user226528
@djsmiley2k Did you stuff the proverbial bean up your nose, so to speak?

I have no clue what you are on about.

user226528
@djsmiley2k I came here and asked what's new. I added that I have no interest about a particular piece of news which I had heard to death. Immediately, you asked what was it. I told you that it was tabloid stuff not worth looking up. Now, did you look it up?

Does it matter? ;p

2:09 PM
oh yey google now creates 50Gb .tgz files instead of making me fetch hundreds of 2Gb .zip files
@FleetCommand Oh, nope.
Couldn't care less ;D

user226528
Wonderful.

user226528
I don't see grownups like you often.

speaking of google...
I'm unsure whether this is cool or creepy

user226528
!!/wiki WP:BEAN

As the old story goes: The little boy's mother was going off to the market. She worried about her son, who was always up to some mischief. She sternly admonished him, "Be good. Don't get into trouble. Don't eat all the chocolate. Don't spill all the milk. Don't throw stones at the cow. Don't fall down the well." The boy had done all of these things on previous market days. Hoping to head off new trouble, she added, "And don't stuff beans up your nose!" This was a new idea for the boy, who promptly tried it out. In our zeal to head off others' unwise action, we may put forth ideas they have not...

2:11 PM
The camera has no GPS - google figures, I suppose, that since its my photo, it needs to be in the same place I'm in at the time, turning my phone into a GPS addon.
Its cool in the sense that it ties in different pieces of tech. Its creepy in that google's basically tracking my every move ._.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek my easy solution is to keep GPS turned off :P

Ave
they are tracking your every move

Bob
I don't like the battery drain anyway

@Bob amusingly, I actually want the photos I take on my phone geotagged
anyway, I might switch to uploading to FTP instead. OpenPMCA has a application that does that

Bob
2:14 PM
@JourneymanGeek yea, sometimes I'll remember to turn it back on for that, but ... eh

@JourneymanGeek whats 'creepy' about that?

user226528
@JourneymanGeek I could never image you wore jewelry.

@FleetCommand Naw, that's mom

srs question btw
i dont know what people mean

user226528
I was having a dream last night. It was 2018 and Microsoft had released the next Windows 10 update. It was called "Destroyers Update".

2:16 PM
if say, i was tracking @bob, i had it all on my bedroom wall mapped out, thats creepy
but google isnt a person

@djsmiley2k It isn't
So, there's people creeepy and organisation creeepy.

is it creepy because people personify things (which i seeming dont do)

Now some algorithm in google knows 1) where I live 2) where I might work, 3) what camera I own ....

@JourneymanGeek ok?
thats creepy tho?

It also means someone went "hey, it sounds like a good idea to take the location from his phone, and tag a photo with it"

2:18 PM
i dopnt fiond it weird at all
seems sane to me
yopur phone and camera are often in the same place

in theory.

saves me time, thanks google!

;p
See, that's the reason I think its cool
and of course, the uploads are manual, and not really part of the standard camera software package...

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Question: If I flag a comment in which Microsoft CEO is referred to as "Satan Nadella", would you delete it?

I would

2:23 PM
yup

user226528
In Wikipedia, "Articles of deletion" (or AfD) is a really boring place where people talk at eachother instead of to eachother.

user226528
But this AfD comment is unlike any I have read before.

user226528
> An encyclopedia has a higher mandate than to pander to the dizzy denizens of the kangeroo court of social media inquisition (the fast declining mainstream publications that shamefully follow and help foster this witchhunt mentality are also invalid as far as any reasonable person is concerned). This so-called "effect" can either be discussed on the Weinstien scandal page, or it doesn't need to exist at all.

user226528
Somebody had nominated the "Weinstein effect" for deletion and, even though I am not an admin, I closed it with a verdict of "keep". (Well, in Wikipedia, people can do that when the consensus is overwhelming.) But I expected someone to undo me any time.

>An archive of your Google Photos data is currently being prepared
0% complete · Data collected: less than 1 MB
This may take awhile

user226528
2:36 PM
Well, it would be a disaster if at 0%, the data was, say, 11 MB. I mean, then, at 100%, you'd have been in serious trouble.

@djsmiley2k 0_0

Hey peeps. How're we on this sunny day?

Sunny you say?
;p

user226528
And day?

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, it's that hot ball of gas just below the horizon there. Looks like it was a sunny day...

user226528
2:40 PM
I assume in UK, it must be 4:40 PM.

@Mokubai naw, its light pollution

@FleetCommand 14:40, so two hours out

+ my camera doing a bit of dynamic range stuff I assume

user226528
Where I live, 14:40 is in the middle of the noon.

user226528
Well, sort of. The sun is high enough.

2:41 PM
@FleetCommand 2:40pm

user226528
Oh, wait. Scratch that. I was thinking 1400.

it's 'bright' outside, but no sign of the su

user226528
I once had a girlfriend called "Su".

user226528
She might have been imaginary though.

user226528
So, right now, there is no sign of Su.

2:43 PM
@FleetCommand Was there ever any sign of her outside of your head?

user226528
Yeah, there was.

user226528
You didn't see that... ;)

user226528
@DavidPostill Hi. You know, if you added a mustache to your avatar, you'd look like Robert Norman Ross.

user226528
Alright. Only 7 minutes to test results... I am bored.

user226528
Only 6 minutes...

2:55 PM
wtf is a 'goldcard' when referring to phones

user226528
T minus 5 minutes...

user226528
ROFLochâteau!

@djsmiley2k seems to be a method to allow for flashing roms

user226528
But lose the Supermario hat.

2:59 PM
obscure, and seems to be a bit risky

@JourneymanGeek ah

@FleetCommand ALL. THE. HATS

user226528
T minus 1 minute...

til what?

@djsmiley2k all references seem to be to older HTC models

user226528
3:01 PM
Okay, now it says "Downloading results. Please wait..."

user226528
I am at a loss as to what the hell I've been doing all along.

@FleetCommand breathing

user226528
3:13 PM
And we have the test results! The Chinese cable is 1080-capable and reliable, plus it communicates PnP information too.

good morning everyone!!!

user226528
Good morning to you too!

3:25 PM
Speaking of cables and signal and such- does a monitor going blank 'randomly' for a few seconds speak to a not-rated for bandwidth issue?
Context: I have an DMI switcher trying to drive 2560x1440x60Hz and the monitor its attached to is blanking now and again
Strangely it's been doing it more recently (last few days), but only does it under Windows, not Linux
Both inputs are being driven by identical NVidia graphics cards, just OS (and presumably driver) that are different
If I take the switcher out of the equation, I don't get the blanking-out behaviour, so I assume it is that
And I've ordered a different switcher that is hopefully rated for that as a replacement
But just thought I'd get a sanity check :P

@bertieb DMI...? the only DMI I know of is the interface between a modern Intel CPU and the mainboard
you mean DVI?

@allquixotic Derp sorry, HDMI

ah.

I blame my cold hands for any and all typos

Periodic blanking could be: loose cable/connector; bad HDMI port; bad HDMI codec on the GPU/mobo; EMI interference on the cable (e.g., crosstalk by contact with another cable); or, yeah, insufficient cable quality for the data quantity being pushed... also could be pure software
is it the same Nvidia card on both Windows and Linux?

3:39 PM
@allquixotic Yup, 970

you know, it could simply be Windows driving more data to the monitor; have you verified Windows isn't overclocking the monitor beyond 60 Hz?

I wondered about interference / crosstalk (especially as it has gotten worse recently) but no amount of cable repositioning seems to make any difference
@allquixotic Actually, it seem to be underclocking to 59Hz, if I have checked it correctly

or it might be a GPU issue -- Linux tends not to even use the GPU very often unless you're decoding video, using the animation "whizzy" effects of a compositing window manager, or explicitly an OpenGL application (which in modern times could actually be a typical web browser, but not for everything)

(behaviour occurs both in Windows 10, vfio 'VM'; and Windows 8, bare metal)

you could see if it's a GPU issue potentially by running some intensive 3d application on Linux, like a native Linux game

3:42 PM
@allquixotic Ah yeah, good point

stress that sucker a little bit on Linux
apply the screws and run a benchmark, even

Heh

Unigine Heaven

I don't have this set up for 3d/gaming (vfio dealie is for that), but I could see i there's something simple I could get from the Arch repos

sounds silly but maybe try Windows 10 v1709 instead of 8 (geez, 8 is practically unsupported by now already because it's obsoleted by 8.1 and even moreso by 10) on bare metal

3:45 PM
@allquixotic It might actually be 8.1, can't remember off the top of my head
Would need to investigate to see if I have free disk space to do another install
Trizen'ing glmark2-git
All good so far, no blanking (and NVidia proprietary drivers are in use, apparently!)

maybe its a resolution issue

glmark2 ran fine with no blanking fwiw
@TamalesRancheros Res is same across platforms (2560x1440)
In theory refresh is the same too (60Hz) although Win10 seems to have set it at 59... might try upping it to 60 to see if it makes it worse
Better HDMI switcher should be here later on (thanks, same-day delivery!) so will report back once it arrives; cheers! :)

4:32 PM
well once i had a similar issue but the main problem was the monitor
so i had to change it because some component of the logic board started to fail and was giving me the same symptoms that you are describing!

@TamalesRancheros Ah, that would be unfortunate (I can't afford to replace the monitor for the foreseeable future)
I'm hoping it's the HDMI switcher as it's cheap and probably not rated for the bandwidth I'm asking of it
(Plugging either output directly into the monitor causes zero blanking)

5:00 PM
New tank mate
Octupus Crime 2.0
1.0 sadly didn't last very long,
Also I know terrible pic

5:18 PM

@djsmiley2k Very purty!

5:35 PM
hopefully he doesnt take too much offense at the 4 guppies

5:51 PM
Do you have any others?
I had some tropical fish... decades ago
Loved neon tetras

6:13 PM
yeah, got this 20l tank, and another which is 120l upstairs
wait, maybe 220, i forget ;D

6:40 PM
Ah, nice! Something quite relaxing about fish :)
Oh now that's a thing, ISTR some kind of fish tank screensaver back in the day- maybe Win 95? Think it might have come with one of the PC Format mags. Anyone haveany recollection of something like this?

@bertieb Yes. And there was one where fish could enter your "tank" from other users with the same screensaver and your fish could leave and go elsewhere :) Can't remember the name though:/

(new HDMI switcher here, will see how it performs)
@DavidPostill Oh that rings a bell! Hmmm. Did they swim off the 'edge' to get into another tank perhaps? Done in... 3d?
I might still have the CDs and floppies somewhere
One of the advantages of being somewhat (cough) of a hoarder
Along with the many many disadvantages :P

7:05 PM
my new neighbours are super noisey

yey?
@bertieb if you DO have old pc disks around, archiveteam would like copies if you're bored.
@Burgi introduce them to the joys of soulfly?

@djsmiley2k my girlfriend has a better plan

Hahahaha
do ittttt

@djsmiley2k Oh? I'm rarely bored, but I do like archives of things

basically upload em to archive.org

7:16 PM
Interesting! Cheers for the heads-up :)

i have a load of old PCs that i need to test the floppy drives on but no disks

if you have no disks....

pc world sell USB floppy drives but not the media

at my job we used to tell random shops to use ebay
as that's the only place we know

basically i wouldn't feel morally right selling 2nd hand machines with floppy drives in them that i am not sure if they work

7:29 PM
say 'floppy drives entirely untested' ?
or remove them all, and bung them as a bunch on ebay

8:15 PM
could do

Ave
8:26 PM
@djsmiley2k just upload to archive.org, please
awell
do both or just archive.org imo
archive.org is more accessible

Bob
morn

@Ave 'both' ?
Archiveteam upload stuff to archive.org

Bob
@JourneymanGeek nice

we're the group who also get a lot of sites into waybackmachine which wouldn't be there otherwise

Just completed another round of system maintenance. Fixed a couple of cable management issues.
Redid the SATA cables to make future storage expansion easier.
Also tidied up the front-panel audio cable.
Removed dust from fans and heatsinks, including the CPU liquid cooler radiator and graphics card heatsink.

9:20 PM
Was thinking about case airflow again. I wonder if it's worth replacing all case fans with Noctua NF-A14 PWM fans...
(concerned about the Noctua color scheme detracting from the system's aesthetics, and not sure if the added performance and lower noise is worth the cost)

pkolp;,p///jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

meow

@MichaelFrank @djsmiley2k has lost 2.1 ...

hjahaah
he's awake atm

lol that was my offpsring looking for my Lego Batman minifigs

9:33 PM
oh, those are here ;)
also penguin, in the hotdog costume, looks really freaky

9:45 PM
...to hell with it. I am replacing the intake fans.
Exhaust fans will remain as they are.

I do need to check mine as temps shot up again :@/

I should be able to run these fans faster with less noise. This will make the current fan configuration, which is negative pressure, more neutral.
Also, PWM control means smoother ramp-up of fan speeds. Higher operating speed (1500 RPM vs 1000 RPM on the stock fans) enables more airflow.
I'll lose the red LEDs on the front of the case, but that's not really an issue.
The stock Corsair AF140L fans are rated to pretty much the same noise level at full speed.

11:10 PM
@Bob the Intel BT 8265 is at least as good as the TrendNet USB; it's definitely class 1, and it might even be delivering lower latency... if it's M.2 PCIe it might be lower latency than the USB bus

Bob
@allquixotic nice!
got the range you need, then?

also the two antennae poke up over the top of the case on the back, which gives them direct line of sight (instead of bouncing around or trying to go through the case)... thank you mATX
well the TrendNet would've been sufficient range anyway but I think this might be even better

Bob
@allquixotic lol. mine came with an antenna on a 1m cable
now if only I could get an Intel chip in there
