12:34 AM
I'm in bed. It's cold :/

3 hours later…
Bob
3:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek I went from double/triple-NAT to single-NAT :D

@Bob Living the dream. I could probably do that, but don't know if my phoneline would keep working...

Bob
3:42 AM
@MichaelFrank ditch the landline? :P

4:35 AM
@Bob Nah, my wife still uses it to call her grandparents and stuff.
I'd like to ditch it.

Bob
4:57 AM
@MichaelFrank VOIP?

5:46 AM
Yea, it's a SIP phone or something... comes bundles with the VDSL

6:26 AM
I was busy and haven't informed you yet; let me inform that after installing a fresh Win10, it's working fine. Thanks for helping me :) @bwDraco @BenN :)
And I don't think the disk is broken :P @FMLCat @djsmiley2k @allquixotic

1 hour later…
Bob
7:42 AM
@MichaelFrank oh. it's doable but might be a bit fiddly

Jul 30 at 2:19, by bwDraco
It's like, the technology for a quantum leap in performance and efficiency is there but Intel refuses to use it.
!!/ultraheaddesk

Hmm... so eDRAM has low latency but isn't as fast in pure bandwidth as high-performance DDR4.

8:43 AM
@bwDraco its a bit more complicated than that - yields are probably not great, the cost differencial might not make sense...

1 hour later…
9:51 AM
@bwDraco odd, that here are no Ryzens in that list

@tereško I think its older

might be

Bob
10:25 AM
oof
@JourneymanGeek been too busy to look at ttrss over the last two days... so many numbers

Bob
well this is annoying
I want to put the unifi controller on my rpi. but apparently some parts of it require armv7, which requires rpi 3 :\
just when I finally think I've found a use for the old pi...

lol
Stick it on one of your tablets? ;p
Assuming I ever get my dream build up, I'd stick it on the router/firewall box

Ok we have 2-3 inches of snow and still coming down

Bob
@JourneymanGeek there's a thought... that could actually work
'cept it'll have to be running Windows
(which unifi controller supports but isn't exactly lightweight)

10:38 AM
ow?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ha, about that... hm. actually. I could probably stick it on the old dd-wrt router with a dead radio

I thought there was a java/webui?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek oh, unifi runs fine on linux but the tablets don't
even on Windows it's just a packaged java-based webserver
@JourneymanGeek trying to get linux running on that tablet can be summed up as whyyyyyyyyyyyyy
I'd be better off buying a new pi ... or a nuc ... or a unifi cloud key :P
unrelatedly. I now have a new label printer.
I need to label that mass of USB cables behind my desktop sometime :P

lol
or a scooter ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, those are $$$

10:42 AM
@Bob cheaper than an NUC I suspect
tho, china.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek they basically are a nuc

@Bob kinda sorta

@Bob that looks 'fun'

Bob
ha, for you @JourneymanGeek: geekbuying.com/item/…

10:45 AM
lol no

Bob
dodgy looks aside, it actually sounds alright

If I need to run the laptop continuously for some days, would it be ok to stay charging plugged in?

I leave my laptop on 24/7
And my plan to walk to work tomorrow is looking less and less likely

I am concerned with keeping the charging plugged in.

Bob
10:58 AM
@Pandya "ok" how?

Hi

Bob
what do you expect to happen?
worst case is maybe the battery degrades a bit faster from heat but it's honestly not worth worrying about
and I swear I've had this conversation before

@Bob Explosions!

@FMLCat I bothered with battery life and heating. I think if the cable is plugged in, battery will sleep l, right?

@Pandya Batteries don't "sleep".
They will degrade faster when fully charged, and when hot
If you're really worried, take out the battery while it's plugged in

11:08 AM
@FMLCat Hi! I need to stay laptop turned on for some days, what should I do with battery and charging?
@FMLCat that can be risky if powercut

@Bob the sweet thing is in theory if I went the linux router route, I can shove over most of what's on phoebe on there too, along with routing
the less sweet thing is I'd have no idea what I'm doing ;p

guys

guuuuuys

what would be the best option currently for remotely managing win10 system?

your own or someone elses? Home or pro?

11:17 AM
system in question might be behind a NAT
win10 home

eh. Least troublesome option IMO is chrome remote desktop

well .. "not-pro"

(of course, tied into your google account)
If you can open ports, then a lot more options open up

Bob
11:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek hosting on the router is a bad idea
makes firewalls and routing a pain

@Bob phoebe's the torrent box

Bob
that makes it worse

;p
in theory you wouldn't need to open up ports if it was running on your router.
(there's a load of other issues. sure....)

@JourneymanGeek If the router (and firewall) were set up properly, you would still have to open up ports
But you'd be opening them up locally not forwarding them

@FMLCat that's kinda different.
You'd be opening them up - sure

11:51 AM
@Bob I host a VPN on my router!

buuut. I really shouldn't be spending the money yet, so thats moot
least until I finsh the bias lighting project I am waiting on ;p

snow snow swnow
@Pandya make sure it doesn't overheat
chrome remote desktop???

12:07 PM
i didnt even know thats a thing

lol
WOrks pretty well
also has a android client

12:20 PM
Can someone please help me identify what this charger connector is called?

errr
looks vauely like microusb?

@JourneymanGeek Nah, it's thicker and broader

@JourneymanGeek Found it. Apparently, it's called VMC-MD3

@rahuldottech blurgh

Bob
12:32 PM
@FMLCat well, things on layer 2/3 aside... :P

1:04 PM
@rahuldottech Yeah because Sony.
King of Proprietary (pre-Apple anyway)

@FMLCat They're still doing pretty good at that -.-
Could've just used micro USB

But then people do not have to buy their propriety cables. And where is the profit in that?

@Hennes It's not like I'm buying an original right now anyway

But but... think of all the profits which you are denying the shareholders! ;)

Bob
1:40 PM

"Close your eyes"
"The world is gone"

@JourneymanGeek I like it :)

I slightly disagree with the first one

1:54 PM
lol

I understand though, that turning it off and on again might fix it. And is faster than troubleshooting properlike ;p

@JourneymanGeek You might want to read A Story About ‘Magic' and reconsider what turning off and on again actually means :)

But, that was not a power switch ;p

2:12 PM
Hello
Is there an Android se chat client? With notifications and stuff?

user226528
Hey, guys. Someone please demonstrate some intelligence. I crave for it.

user226528
A dumb guy in Wikipedia has turned this table into this cryptic one.

user226528
I Harry Potter books, it is said that the entry into the Ravenclaw's common room is protected by a puzzle. Maybe this cryptic table is intended for them, not us mere Hufflepuffs.

user226528
...

@ThatBrazilianGuy there is, but a lot of people don't like it :/

Q: Latest version of Android client is buggy

RoboKarenThe latest version of the SE client is buggy on Android. Frequent screen garbage and random crashes. I'm not the only person with this problem, there are other comments in the Google Play store attesting to this. For my system: SE Android Client Version: 1.0.68 Nexus 7 Android Version: 5.1.1

@FleetCommand Just revert the changes :)

2:27 PM
Yeah, I just noticed 😉
It's been maybe a year or more since I used the Android app

Warning: I'm feeling grumpy today :)
Is there a problem with the full stop, shift and enter keys on your keyboard? — DavidPostill ♦ 27 mins ago

user226528
@DavidPostill Well, it is cute of you to think reverting solves everything. This certain editor has a history of pulling stunts like this. One time, he changed all "IA-32"s into "x86" and all "x64"s into "x86-64". Another time, he deleted every bit of info that was old, not realizing that old is the whole purpose of a history section.

@DavidPostill Seems to be a lot of that going around recently. I was particularly grumpy on Thursday. Maybe something flu like...
@FleetCommand Revert, and request a ban then

user226528
@Mokubai Trust me, that's not how Wikipedia works. But also trust me, I know exactly what to do. Still, seeing so much stupidity needs some refreshment.

@DavidPostill @Mokubai you two are clearly in too forgiving a mood

2:36 PM
@FleetCommand Seems like you need to borrow my length of clue-by-four... don't mind the bloodstains...

user226528
Yeah, tell me about it.

user226528
Mine is called WP:ANEW in Wikipedia.

user226528
They'll give him a clue-by-twenty-four. ;)

user226528
But what's going on with you guys here? Have Burgi or Rahul been into another girl saga recently?

user226528
2:42 PM
Well, I wish the best for them.

user226528
They're my buddies after all. If they ever get into trouble and I into ownership of a fleet of military-class drone, I'll certainly send some to help them.

2:56 PM
@FleetCommand Not that I know of, but rumor says a chat regular has declared their love for Rahul. What a weirdo.

@FleetCommand You should have warned me that I needed popcorn before going into the Talk page for that wiki entry...
Yeah, his table is useless in the extreme though.

@allquixotic hoorar!

5:23 PM
@allquixotic Happy birthday dude! How many orbits have you completed?

waiting for the notifcation that my daughters school is closed.

THIS SWITCH CASE HAS A CASE FOR EVERY KEY ON THE DAMN KEYBOARD AND I'M GETTING A HEADACHE KEEPING TRACK OF IT

Dear lord. Six babies crying like pigs being slaughtered in the next room.

@ThatBrazilianGuy They'll shut up soon enough once they're slaughtered

I have a newfound respect for mothers (and fathers) of infants. What they put up with... cc @CanadianLuke @djsmiley2k

I'm boooooooored
I'm working Sundays
Well, a couple Sundays. As inspector for a national admission exam.
The first Sunday I oversaw the exam of four deaf candidates.
The other Sunday I oversaw the corridor. As expected, it... Was a corridor. Nothing happened. For five hours. No phone. No book. Nothing.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Are you not allowed a phone or book? Why? You are not taking the exam.

This Sunday there was only one candidate. She took 25 minutes of the allotted 4 hours. I was so happy, going home early and being paid in full...
...hah, naïve me. They rescheduled me. To the corridor. Again.

@ThatBrazilianGuy How does a corridor take exams? Is this a Brazilian thing? ;)

6:05 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy its weird, being a parent gives you some superhuman ability to basically negate your own kids crying

however other peoples kids are still annoying :(

@Mokubai 32

@allquixotic You have $5000 USD to spend on headphones!?
That'll cover complete college education from a good university here
Also what is it with this emoji?
!!o_0

6:24 PM
@rahuldottech That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

@rahuldottech If necessary, but I don’t think there will be any product at any price that will do what I want, so, no real point in saying any particular price ceiling
Probably what I’d end up spending in reality (based on current headphone prices) is no more than $600
Also for $5000 here a professor will shake your hand and say hi
2
You pay about $10 per word they utter in lecture at a typical American university
@Bob ty

6:49 PM
can you check what the nameservers are with nslookup?

7:02 PM
@rahuldottech custom emoji for that site.

@Burgi it'll tell you right away yes
server: xxxxx

result: yyyyyy

that just lists the NS server for my machine

yeha, is that not whyat ytou wanted?
sigh can't type, hands frozen

no, i wanted the NS for the domian i'm looking up
how deep is the snow btw?

7:18 PM
@rahuldottech lol

~3 inches
@Burgi poissibly using -all or something
but dig will return it
dont' have a box to test from right now

zero snow here

:O
buses stopped running, schools all closed xD

7:34 PM
its a sunday, of course the schools are shut

tomorrow :P

you know in norway the schools are never shut with a tiny amount of snow

tbh most of the roads haven't been touched for gritting etc
so it's dangerous out there atm
yeah, but they also have winter chains on their tyres for 50% of the year?

meh
walk to school!

yeah that'd be good
but that'd mean teachers lived in the locality of their schools xD
I was going to do the hour walk to work
(an hour, without snow)
@rahuldottech Reccomends to use whatsapp? hahah

7:39 PM
hahAA

8:13 PM
@allquixotic AvE did a pretty amusing tear down of the Juicero
Basically the same as that article, but he's a Canadian engineer of some type that likes to just break stuff.

8:44 PM
@DavidPostill I KNOW RIGHT
I hereby declare @DavidPostill saner than the entire team of management who came up with the rules.
I was even scolded for being with the phone in my pocket and one earphone in one ear.
Because, you know, I have to be fully prepared for all the nothing that happens.

8:56 PM
lol

@ThatBrazilianGuy You know, it doesn't take much to be smarter than a management team... usually the average intelligence of any such group halves each time you add a member.

Your math is weird. Or my brain is tired. Probably the latter.

I wish my math were wrong.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Essentially as the group size increases so does the number of braindead or idiotic ideas. Strangely the number of good ideas doesn't increase in tandem. In the end all you get is completely boneheaded ideas and you end up with someone "guarding" a corridor and not allowed to distract themselves in case "something unexpected" happens.

Stephen KroschelThe best place to locate your router is farthest away from where you sleep or work as they emit a dangerous microwave frequency of over 1000 microwatts per square meter. Am I imagining this feature, or is there a feature on laptops that cuts the microphone off when there is speaker activity to prevent feedback loops?

booked my starwars tickets for thursday :D

Bob
11:13 PM
so. uh. they just rebooted the train

Ha, all the lights went out?

11:27 PM
@MichaelFrank there's such a feature but it's actually cooler than that.

It's not cool when I have a user that won't use her headset cause it'll 'mess up her hair'... so now I have to raise a case with HP to 'troubleshoot' why her microphone cuts out when she is presenting through Skype. /endrant

Oo
It's supposed to filter out your voice or the sounds it makes or something

Bob
11:46 PM
@MichaelFrank Refer to her manager...
