12:32 AM
@Bob Wait, this phone is only AUD 19?
Is it carrier locked? What GSM frequencies?
And... HOW SO CHEAP?!

carrier locked I suspect

"No lock in contracts". No mention on hardware GSM lock-ins.
> 4G IS AVAILABLE IN ALL CAPITAL CBDS AND ASSOCIATED AIRPORTS, MOST SURROUNDING SUBURBAN AREAS AND IN OVER 600 REGIONAL AREAS. IN OTHER COVERAGE AREAS AROUND AUSTRALIA, YOU’LL SWITCH TO 3G.
Uh...? What? Is that some sort of "fake" 4G?
> BAND SUPPORT:
Network: 3G: 850/2100MHz
GSM/EDGE:900/1800/1900MHz
Fakeness intensifies

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy The network supports 4G. The phone doesn't.

> Handsets are locked to the Telstra network. Network unlocking fees apply.
No mention of the fees on the site :(

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy It's cheap and pretty shoddy :P imei.info/phonedatabase/105496-zte-b815

12:45 AM
@Bob From the specs looks like it's better than a Defy and worse than a Moto G 1st gen.
Still, for AUD 19 it's a steal!
Shitty camera, tho.
Nice as a backup phone or as a second phone for work-only activity

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy sure, I'll just add it to my pile of backup phones :P

1:00 AM
If I were to buy one (and if they shipped to Brazil), UPS shipping AU -> BR is 7 times the price of the phone itself. =/

of all the things I could get stuck in my head....
I have one particular arrangement of "the hedgehog cannot be buggered at all"

Better than getting a catchy jingle from a biometry TV AD >_<

I know accessisibility and all
but the signer is having too much fun
also, those finger look vaguely....

@JourneymanGeek familiar?

not quuuuuuite what I was thinking.

1:15 AM
They don't look like penises, if that's what you mean.

tooootally do
rightmost one on the thumbnail is especially bad

...now Youtube is suggesting me all kinds of kid videos.
Mahna Mahna in Japanese, with giant mechas, by a Brazilian singer:

1:35 AM
wait, wut
IP has protocols for splitting messages across Ethernet packets
TCP has protocols for splitting messages across IP packets
and HTTP has protocols for splitting messages across TCP packets
(and a standard HTML web page will split its content into multiple HTTP requests)

Bob
there's no such thing as an Ethernet packet. you might be thinking of Ethernet frames
a TCP/IP packet is a single thing
HTTP does not have any idea what a TCP packet is. it views the connection as a simple stream.
also I swear I had this exact same conversation like half a year ago

> HTTP has protocols for splitting messages across TCP packets
Wait, what?!

Bob
if you want to be specific, TCP has segments but they're fully encapsulated in a single IP packet

Argh, I can't terminology today

Bob
huh. nevermind, TIL there actually is an Ethernet packet, while a frame is the payload

1:43 AM
But yeah, I was thinking about fragmented IP
And then you have TCP buffering and HTTP continuation
(That's what I was trying to refer to, but I can't language)

@LegionMammal978 Isn't HTTP a protocol in itself? And wouldn't the underlying TCP packest be totally transparent to HTTP?

Bob
qasd will probably come in and say everything I said was all wrong :P
@LegionMammal978 yea, fragmentation is ... funny

@Bob Who's qasd? @FML?

Bob
I suppose you could consider a single TCP segment to be fragmented across multiple IP packets

But yeah, I guess it's more about the payloads being split

Bob
1:46 AM
I need to remind myself how fragmented IDs work

IP fragments can form a single payload of TCP, buffered TCP can form a single payload of HTTP, HTTP continuations can form a single payload of HTML, etc.

Bob
yea sorry, forgot about the fragment offset field
@LegionMammal978 "buffered TCP" is tautological :P

@ThatBrazilianGuy Yes, and yes. Because HTTP is supported over a stream, you can send a message over however many TCP packets you want.
@Bob Explain?

Bob
@LegionMammal978 TCP is always buffered
to quote the spec:
> Processes transmit data by calling on the TCP and passing buffers of
data as arguments.

@LegionMammal978 Doesn't it directly contradict what you said earlier?
> and HTTP has protocols for splitting messages across TCP packets

1:54 AM
How is it buffered when, say, the entire payload is pushed at once, @Bob?

Bob
@LegionMammal978 You never interact with individual TCP segments/packets. The only interface the protocol exposes to higher levels is a buffer (stream)

@ThatBrazilianGuy Ah, as I said, I can't terminology, it's not so much having protocols as not being able to care
@Bob Makes sense, I guess

Bob
To the caller, you never know or care whether the payload requires multiple segments.
If you do care, you should be using UDP

I've been looking at Wireshark for an hour too long

Bob
('course, for optimisation you might look at MSS, etc.)

1:56 AM
Keeping track of various ports sending requests is tedious

Bob
@LegionMammal978 also I feel like I have to point out that an HTTP request must go over a single TCP connection
if the connection is interrupted, the entire request must be retried
That's assuming the TCP implementation (on both ends) reports the error if it's interrupted, and doesn't silently hide/retry it...
(same goes for any other protocol you put it over; HTTP technically doesn't require TCP)
this is more relevant if a proxy/tunnel/VPN is involved

And if the stream underlying TCP is interrupted temporarily, then the interrupted segment should be quietly resent and re-buffered, correct?
That is, as long as the TCP connection is maintained

Bob
@LegionMammal978 as long as TCP can do so, yes. but if TCP hits a reset (RST) or times out, HTTP will start over - it won't try to continue the previous request over a new stream
at least that's the case for all known implementations... the spec is rather more vague

So HTTP just sees entire connections, and TCP just sees a potentially faulty underlying packet-based protocol, if I'm understanding this correctly
So how does TCP not get interrupted by fragmented IP?

Bob
aha!
> 8.2.4 Client Behavior if Server Prematurely Closes Connection
they even suggest a backoff algorithm :P

2:05 AM
@Bob lol, reminds me of trying to write a program in C to properly create HTTP requests and receive the responses

Bob
@LegionMammal978 yea, that's a fun one...

It's a real pain

Bob
far as I can tell, the TCP sequence numbers are not touched
so you'll have multiple IP fragments with fragment offsets

But you'd think there'd have to be some IP buffering in order to have coherent TCP segments

Bob
that get reassembled into a single TCP segment with that same sequence number
@LegionMammal978 if you assume the whole layering thing, TCP is not aware that anything has come in until all IP fragments have been received
@LegionMammal978 IP spec (RFC 791) doesn't specify how reassembly must be performed
but they do provide an "example" (I assume in modern language that means "MAY")
> For each datagram the buffer identifier is computed as the
concatenation of the source, destination, protocol, and
identification fields. If this is a whole datagram (that is both
the fragment offset and the more fragments fields are zero), then
any reassembly resources associated with this buffer identifier
are released and the datagram is forwarded to the next step in
datagram processing.

If no other fragment with this buffer identifier is on hand then
reassembly resources are allocated. The reassembly resources
Basically, yes, there's a buffer :P

2:09 AM
Oh well, 0x011, bye

Bob
@LegionMammal978 0x011?
@JourneymanGeek This guy actually has backups! :D superuser.com/questions/1267717/…

@JourneymanGeek Are you saying your gran had a vermin terrier or are you referring to a social worker?

user226528
(Wweeeee I am a necromancer!)

@FleetCommand or some varient there of.

we watched the first season of stranger things over the weekend
really enjoyed it

user226528
I watched the first season of Blacklist. I feel I could have wasted my time in a more honorable fashion.

user226528
These yanks have lost their mojo. They don't know how to make good films anymore.

user226528
9:11 AM
I've even heard the American House of Cards is cancelled.

er... yes....
they've cancelled house of cards because the lead actor has been accused of multiple counts of child molestation

user226528
9:41 AM
@Burgi I just read a brief plotline of House of Cards and the story of Kevin Spacey getting accused. It is funny how they resemble each other.

user226528
I am not proposing that the show producers are resorting to the same ugly tactics featured in the show. No.

user226528
I am just saying it is ... funny.

@Burgi It's a remote code execution tool that also is an image resizing library for WordPress. It fell out of favor back in 2011 after a huge vulnerability was found out. And it's unnecessary as WordPress has built-in image resizing functions since... I don't know when.

@ThatBrazilianGuy I thought Wordpress was a remote code execution tool that was also, incidentally a blog... ;p
hides

WordPress is the Windows of CMS's.
(I hate Windows and don't know what to make of it)

9:50 AM
(I run it ._.)

@JourneymanGeek WordPress, or Windows??
A: "yes".

@ThatBrazilianGuy actually yes
but not wordpress on windows

That would be... Silly? Insane? A challenge? Ultimately pointless?
That would be like trying to run an old O/S currently, or an old browser on modern websites! Who would do that just for fun? No one here, surely!

hah
My first webserver was.... my desktop ;p
so totally did that, tho not wordpress

Wordpress on Windows is a pain.
Even on Windows Server that has a dedicated fancy installer for Wordpress...

9:55 AM
to quote the needful "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHYYYY?"

@JourneymanGeek Oh, I found that at work last year. A desktop acting as a web server.

@MichaelFrank wordpress takes like... 10 minutes to install

No, it's a pain.

!! s/minutes/seconds/

@ThatBrazilianGuy @MichaelFrank wordpress takes like... 10 seconds to install (source)

9:56 AM
If I had nothing else to say about wordpress on linux - its pretty straightforward

@MichaelFrank why are you using the installer and not just uploading the php files?

The only worse way to install WordPress is by using Fantastico, Scriptaculous and the like.

Oh, it was when I was experimenting with setting sites up with IIS.

There's somewhat of a store for webapps.

10:05 AM
I am not sure about permissions...

@ThatBrazilianGuy ticket this morning from dev about how something isn't working, why haven't networks allowed him access etc, blah blah blah
he then proceeds to put the username and password for rdp in the ticket
/me facepalms
so we login anyway

Touch VPN has 32K good ratings though so it should speak about trustworthiness?

user226528
@Boris_yo Looks like the same bad behavior we've seen so much in Windows XP era: Apps wanting administrative privileges because having it was cool.

10:26 AM
@FleetCommand The parts I don't like is manage apps, extensions and themes and communicate with cooperating native applications.
Why does nobody question these? Is everyone sheeple?

yes

user226528
Oh, I question these alright. But Google's answer is pretty much in the lines of either take it, or go first-unique-encryption-key yourself.

@Boris_yo you don't trust people, so why are you trusting peoples reviews?
@FleetCommand amen

user226528
Fortunately, in cases of iOS and Windows Store apps, the situation is much. Better you still have to option to take away these permissions one by one.

@Boris_yo we don't install random crap on our phones ;p

Q: How to keep my testicles from freezing on a recumbent

NobodyI wonder how to keep my testicles (plus part of the perineum) from freezing. I ride a recumbent, which is making it worse because it exposes those parts to the wind much more and I use unpadded tights (i.e. no isolation from the padding). I have seen the question about pants in general but the pr...

the important questions ;p

Here's he funny part. Its entirely relevant and I can't think of any other way to write it

@JourneymanGeek genitalila?
male sex organs
> I use unpadded tights (i.e. no isolation from the padding)

1) not much better

11:05 AM
and there's the solution too lol

2) has the word sex in it
;p

@JourneymanGeek omg he said the thing

user226528
11:41 AM
@Burgi Should be downvoted for the lack of initial research. The immediate answer (and a very effective one too) is wearing more.

@FleetCommand agreed

@FleetCommand that was my point
the answer is in the question
"I know Y will cause X, X is happening, what should I do?!"

user226528
O.o

track a .... playmobil ship

@JourneymanGeek Who "we"?

user226528
11:48 AM
Him and his fellow dog of indeterminate breed, whom he calls roomie.

Ash and his human, obviously.

@djsmiley2k surely that will just vanish beneath the waves the second that a large wave appears

@Burgi that's what I thought
but looking at the site it seems it already made it accross the atlantic?

its heading south

11:51 AM
> "The ship, named Adventure, needed some adaptations before it was ready to tackle the North Sea. A counterweight was added to help it stay upright and it was filled with polystyrene to help it stay afloat."

user226528
Hopefully, it was constructed with a help of an open-source simulation app that helps determine what happens if they run into a 21-meters-tall wavefront.

we had the playmobil cruiser as children and that sank in a moderately stormy bathtub

lol

user226528
As long as the weight of the wave doesn't smash the ship into bits and pieces, the ship can stay afloat with strategically placed drain holes.

user226528
The dangerous part is when a sizeable mass of water is added to the mass of the ship and is not discharged quickly.

11:56 AM
Hey folks

user226528
As a matter of fact, that's how submersibles go deep.

this is the one we had:

@FleetCommand you can take away permissions in Android too

it had a sort of torpedo that slotted to the bottom to provide propulsion

@FleetCommand indeed, but they have the ability to discharge, while under water

user226528
11:58 AM
The ships seem to gain their viability from their sizes. Ships are the largest constructs that human has made. Well... at least as long as you consider cities as collection of constructs.

something boats don't...
@FleetCommand the great wall of china? the pyramids?

user226528
Sure.

user226528
Still, the ships are bigger.

@FleetCommand Largest moving... nope wait there's that huge digger in germany
what?
really?

what about that several kilometer long trains?

12:00 PM

user226528
There ships several kilometers long that act as moving bridges.

whaaaaaaat
show me :O

Seawise Giant, later Happy Giant, Jahre Viking, Knock Nevis, Oppama, and finally Mont, was a ULCC supertanker that was the longest ship ever built. It possessed the greatest deadweight tonnage ever recorded. Fully loaded, its displacement was 657,019 tonnes (646,642 long tons; 724,239 short tons), the heaviest ship of any kind, and with a laden draft of 24.6 m (81 ft), it was incapable of navigating the English Channel, the Suez Canal or the Panama Canal. Overall, it was generally considered the largest ship ever built. It was sunk during the Iran–Iraq War, but was later salvaged and restored to...
> Length: 458.45 m

HUGS

user226528
@djsmiley2k Watched it on the Discovery channel.

12:03 PM
are they ships or barges?

yeah, several kilometers long ships are going to be hard to maneuver.

also impossible to dock

Pyramid: 5,216,308,000 kilograms

user226528
@Burgi: Neither. They are mobile bridges, with very limited maneuverability and no need to dock.

link?

user226528
12:05 PM
Not Internet. Discovery channel. Don't take my word for it, if you don't want.

user226528
Alright, let's move on to something cool.

this is cool

user226528
I am super user, not super sailor.

user226528
Isn't there a Transformer that would transform into a giant ship?

user226528
Galvatron once transformed into a planet though.

12:09 PM
@Burgi are you still in a relationship?

o_O

I haven't been online very frequently
So I have a lot to catch up on

nod

Also, I'm bored and need some conversation

@rahuldottech good

@JourneymanGeek how's it going with the job search?

@rahuldottech how are you doing?

@rahuldottech yes...

I need to pop out for lunch

12:10 PM
@djsmiley2k gosh. Make sure you get some adorable pictures or videos on film
@djsmiley2k pretty okay, actually
@Burgi good for you!

@rahuldottech oh got plenty of pics and vids

@djsmiley2k I can feel myself healing :P
I think I'm going a bit crazy

@rahuldottech oh it's healthy to be a bit crazy!

@rahuldottech nothing yet
But that's pretty typical
not all bad. got some familly drama that needs quite a bit of my attention/time anyway

12:29 PM
(IE I will let you guys know if something even slightly interesting happens)

user226528
Wow. That stopped too soon.

12:45 PM

OKAY GUYS. PLANNED PARENTHOOD HAS THE BEST MOBILE WEBSITE THAT I'VE EVER SEEN. IT'S A MASTERPIECE.

@FleetCommand what did, shipgate?

@rahuldottech Are you being ironic? (I have no mobile to check) =/

user226528
@djsmiley2k First, please explain the word you inserted after the coma.

what (ended too soon), (was it) shipgate?

user226528
12:50 PM
@djsmiley2k What is a "shipgate"? A ship that has a gate? Or a scandal involving a ship? Like "Watergate", "Irangate", "Trumpgate", etc.?

the second one

user226528
Is there a scandal involving a ship?

not really
just the discussion we all had

user226528
Well, our discussion was not scandalous. But if it makes you feel better, when I said it stopped too soon, I was talking about Rahulgate.

what is an irangate?

user226528
12:53 PM
Or the debriefing of it, thereof.

user226528
@jokerdino Look it up in Wikipedia.

user226528
The Iran–Contra affair (Persian: ماجراي ایران-کنترا‎‎, Spanish: caso Irán-Contra), also referred to as Irangate, Contragate or the Iran–Contra scandal, was a political scandal in the United States that occurred during the second term of the Reagan Administration. Senior administration officials secretly facilitated the sale of arms to Iran, which was the subject of an arms embargo. They hoped, thereby, to fund the Contras in Nicaragua while at the same time negotiating the release of several U.S. hostages. Under the Boland Amendment, further funding of the Contras by the government had been...

tldr

user226528
It belongs to a time when Iran and U.S. were chummy.

must have been before argo

user226528
12:56 PM
Yeah.

Iran would have been a good place without the puppet shah rule.

@FleetCommand ahha!

@ThatBrazilianGuy I AM NOT
It's seriously so well built

how is the smog season in Delhi?

@jokerdino terrible
Unbearable
I can't go biking
Always have to wear a mask

1:03 PM
:/

@rahuldottech how long before it busts?
someone I know wants to visit Delhi during later periods of November.

@jokerdino should be better in a week
It's improving every day
But it's still bad
I mean... It's worst during the morning
Evenings are ok

why's that?
are they burning in the night?

@jokerdino fog in the morning
Comes down with all the smoke

cold air sinks

1:06 PM
oh yeah

@djsmiley2k I like Winters. Hate smog

smoke + fog

nod

user226528
Oh, dear. I remember I had a colleague who hated the word "brunch". "Make up your mind!" he used to say. "Breakfast or lunch?"

got any air purifiers @rahul?

user226528
1:11 PM
Which one is hotter? Indian food or Mexican food?

indian

^^^

native Indian?

i hate it now all the massive brands in the UK have created christmas adverts

already?

1:14 PM
@Burgi I find it funny
yup they all out, already @jokerdino

Wait, Indian food has got more pepper in it than Mexican food? Well there's one cuisine then I'm not eating, like, ever.

the best bit is, come Jan, or even late dec, the news will be telling us how Sales in Dec are down this year, blah blah

they've also adopted black friday which breaks their stats

What does Indian food consist of?

curry powder and yuk

1:15 PM
lol

sorry i hate indian food

user226528
I don't. But they are not my first choice or anywhere near my first choice.

I don't know what they sell as Indian food but probably targeted at the diaspora.

@jokerdino, they make curry powder here in the UK then ship it back to india for profit

must be a huge business

1:19 PM
yup

user226528
Not as huge as the IT business, but yeah. People have to eat and ... you can figure the rest.

user226528
Short version: There is always demand.

but surely, it is easier to make them locally in India if they are sourcing the ingredients from there.

user226528
@jokerdino That's one hell of a political can of worm you'd better left unopenned.

what

user226528
1:23 PM
The phenomenon of countries with raw material importing the products of those raw material.

@ThatBrazilianGuy more spices in general
How much texas petrol, is mined in texas/

user226528
^ extracted

user226528
Also "petrol" is a refinery product. Petroleum is extracted.

crude oil

user226528
Yeah. Another name for it.

user226528
1:27 PM
But "petrol" is "gasoline"

you all understood the question tho.
:P

I am still waiting for the can of worms to open.

he's in the process of importing the iron ore to make the can opener

lol

lol

user226528
1:32 PM
lol

1:46 PM
@Burgi that's british food.
@ThatBrazilianGuy chillis vary though
and depends on how you cook em.

british "food"

I mean 'less' chillis can be more if you compare, say a jalapeno to the standard south indian chilli
and uber traditional south indian cooking used pepper (not chilli) and more modern cooking typically uses a mix of spices
