I need 3 or 4 serial ports
Fine, you win. I can't out-cheap you.
Like I said, I have strange requirements
I deal with hardware older than I am
Bob
Bob
Huh. $45 for an i7-940.
Old scanner or printer?
No, Amateur Radios with serial ports
17:01
Wow.
That's my newest radio with computer control
And I've had bad luck with USB-DB9 adaptors in the past
Bob
Bob
Huh. LGA 1366 is more expensive second-hand than LGA 1155.
LGA1366 is still high-end
Well, it was only ever high-end.
And is still quite popular for the extreme overclockability of those chips for the day. After all I still used LGA1366 till late last year, and probably would still be using it if it weren't for Cities Skylines
and KSP
Personally, if I can get an intel board + cpu + 8GB RAM for $80 I'd do it, as long as it had good performance and was upgradable
... Or don't get new RAM?
17:06
Will the Intel use ECC DDR2?
Bob
Bob
@Daniel Eh. I already found second-hand parts adding up to $80-$85. Could probably bring it lower by bidding on auction rather than buy it now.
What parts you got?
And I'm quoting UK prices, with our obligatory 20% markup
Bob
Bob
Too late. Closed the window when you said you didn't want it. I've already listed the parts above; you can search ebay & sort by price.
@Bob Ctrl+Shift+T
Bob
Bob
17:08
"i3-2100", "8GB DDR3" and "LGA1155"
There's your search terms.
@qasdfdsaq I had them in a private window.
Oh an i3... Which gen?
Bob
Bob
Otherwise it'd keep picking up on my ebay account in AU
2ndd gen, as indicated by the 2
Bob
Bob
The socket is compatible with 3rd too
2nd gen was very bad.... They're to like 6th or 7th gen now
Bob
Bob
17:09
but you could upgrade from i3 to i7 in 2nd and get a massive boost alraedy anyway
2xxx = second gen. 3xxx = 3rd gen. 4xxx = 4th gen. 5xxx = 5th gen. 6xxx = 6th gen.
Simple huh.
Bob
Bob
@Daniel ...very bad? Really?
I'm quite literally still running an i7-2600 on my desktop.
Lol, 2nd gen was far better than 1st gen.
Compared to the modern ones 2nd gen is very bad
1st gen was still way better than a Phenom
Bob
Bob
17:09
The desktop I'm sitting at now.
The desktop I play games on.
for the same specs, 2nd gen to 6th gen is a huge performance boost
There's about a 30% improvement between 2nd gen, and the latest 6th gen.
That's a lot ^
Bob
Bob
And I don't see a pressing need to upgrade.
There's about a 60% improvement between a Phenom and a 2nd gen Core i
Bob
Bob
17:10
@Daniel Wait. Why are you complaining about 2nd gen Intel Core? You were looking at an AMD proc that was the best of its socket, that could barely compete with a 2nd gen i3.
Go up to an i7 and it's not even a contest.
It could barely compete with a 1st gen i3.
Because with the upgrade path I had worked out I could eventually get the newest gen AMD 8core 5.0GHz
upgrade CPU, then mobo, then CPu again when I havemoney
Even a 2nd gen i7 beats that
Bob
Bob
...spending a whole lot more in the process
@qasdfdsaq And that actually sounds plausible, not having seen the benchmarks.
Honestly, I haven't kept up with the most recent AMD CPUs
And it uses one-third the power.
@Bob AMD don't have any recent CPUs
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Let's keep it to LGA1155, hm? cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2014&cmp[]=2
But the price difference is shocking
a good Intel can run $500
That's because a good intel is way faster than anything AMD.
I feel dirty for linking cpuboss, but what the heck.
17:14
Is there an intel board out there that fits my needs?
No. Buy your damn Phenom already.
Bob
Bob
@Daniel i7-3770k is currently something like $220 second-hand.
ouch
That's a lot for me
Bob
Bob
It'll probably hit $150 or maybe lower by the time you save up enough to buy it anyway.
like, A LOT still
17:15
You're not going to be able to upgrade to an 8-core AMD CPU in your current mobo anyway
Bob
Bob
Not like you can afford an FX-9590 anyway.
So you'll have to buy a new mainboard, and new RAM, and blah blah blah.
Bob
Bob
And you'd also need a new mobo.
And new RAM.
...what he said.
OK so in your opinions, with my budget in mind, which would be better: replace CPU now, or replace CPU, mobo, and RAM now?
Bob
Bob
@Daniel You're balking at the price, when your own proposed upgrade path probably costs as much if not more.
17:15
(Though I think it might support DDR2)
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq 8 GB of DDR3 is $15 -_-
Wait, nope. DDR3 only.
Which costs less now?
Because in the future I'll have money to blow (or at least more than $5)
Dude, how old are you?
17 @qasdfdsaq
Bob
Bob
17:17
I've already told you, you can get the LGA1155 w/ i3 setup for about $80-$85.
I think I've said that three times by now actually.
OK, that ^ sounds reasonable
Bob
Bob
And that can be dropped some $10-$20 if you bid low on auctions and wait a bit.
sup
Bob
Bob

17:18
Get out meet some girls or some shit and stop worrying about a $10 CPU difference.
Bob
Bob
Then again, it's up to you to look up the prices yourself. I can't really search US ebay accurately.
Hey, I'm not a player @qasdfdsaq
Bob

I already gave you the search terms.
Nor am I but I still wish I did more of that when I was 17

@Bob You have been the most helpful here, I appreciate your efforts and your advice has been absorbed

Nobody wants to end up like me! Not even me!
Bob
Bob
In fact, if you look at the completed listings, that CPU has literally gone for under $30 a bunch of times recently.
I'm already the weird guy @qasdfdsaq, I'm out of luck

How long is the queue?
Why couldn't they have made this thing out of plastic like the S5, that was perfect.
@qasdfdsaq Because IMITATE IPHONE AT ALL COSTS [*_*]
Anyways, I've got homework to do and test to take, I'll TTYL
that's Samsung's mentality
@allquixotic The whole reason I bought Galaxy phones is because I didn't want to sacrifice functionality for iPhone-looks

anything iPhone does must be good, so Samsung tries to do it too
And Thanks for the advice @Bob, you're the most sensible/calm one here so far.
I'm out of here.
Bob is not a person.
@allquixotic They seem to have sorta changed their mind. After all, their S6 was basically an iPhone clone, and they've undone half of that crap after learning their lesson.

Much has changed and I'm a lot less likely to act out today than I was even two weeks ago, but there's much work to be done.
@qasdfdsaq who wants to be a gigolo?

My printer has a built-in firewall, wow.
That'll allow me to forward port 9100 to the printer while still allowing only certain IPs to access the printer, which lets me send jobs to the printer from my server or other whitelisted IPs without actually allowing attackers to print arbitrary content on my printer.
19:03
I said this a while back on printing remotely:
Sep 24 '15 at 21:23, by DragonLord
I've always wanted to be able to print remotely, but Epson Connect and Google Cloud Print do not meet my requirements and port forwarding to port 9100 raises security concerns (anyone with the network's external IP address can print arbitrary documents).
Guess that's another perk of having a high-end office printer. More security controls.
I won't have to worry about attackers printing arbitrary documents any more.
Realized that the only place I actually had that script saved online was on pastebin. :P
Feels weird creating a whole github repo just for a script though
...and with HPLIP from the cloud desktop Linode server, I am indeed able to print from CUPS:
In other words, I am able to send jobs from my server in the cloud to my printer at home. This actually works.
19:46
Okay, took me some time to sort out a firewall issue where it was letting traffic through. The printer isn't interpreting 192.168.1.0/24 correctly; it just decided to let all traffic from any IP through. Changed it to a range (192.168.1.1–255) fixed the issue.
I have two servers; I had allowed one of them through but not the other. For some reason, the other was able to send data to the printer and the printer actually printed it.
Now the printer doesn't respond to data sent from that server.
...while it allows data from the other server through. Firewall is working as designed.

The question was incredibly unclear. Rewrote it to try and make it make more sense. Apparently it was translated via Google Translate or something.
As to the issue, I haven't heard of this before. It is an unusual problem.
21:19
Okay. One of my printer's firewall rules wasn't working, and it turns out the rules had the same priority. Changing them to have different priorities fixed it. It took me so long to sort this out.
...and to verify that I cannot get the printer to print data sent from any IP address not whitelisted.
HP quite simply dropped the ball with the firewall configuration in the EWS. *sigh*
nazi courtrooms, it should not be important what one wears, includig the all too human judge, the ploy is to give it more credibility than humans deciding fates of things and cases.
First experience with administering a printer that is anywhere near enterprise class and it's this frustrating.
is as archaic as an english court having magistrates wearing curly wigs
Court dress comprises the style of clothes prescribed for courts of law, and for royal courts. == Commonwealth countries == === United Kingdom === ==== The Supreme Court ==== Members of the old Judicial Committee of the House of Lords (or "Law Lords") and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council never wore court dress (although advocates appearing before them did). Instead they were dressed in ordinary business clothing. Since the creation of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in 2009, the Justices of that Court have retained the Law Lords' tradition of sitting unrobed. On ce...

a construction worker should not have to rent a $300 business suit , nor the time it would take to do that, to have "justice" assuming the rare possibility that justice is ever achieved in a courtroom.
fact , they are all human, and to date the decisions made have been human, the massive quantity of laws and written documents (including contracts) has only improved the ability for a human judge to decide a case with bias, they just apply the hundreds of laws to said case selectivly.
"You do not need to wear a suit when going to court but your dress should be neat and smart. It is inappropriate to wear singlets, thongs, hat or sunglasses in the courtroom." courts.sa.gov.au/GoingtoCourt/Pages/Court-Behaviour.aspx
@DavidPostill I'd probably use normal business dress: suit, dress pants, and dress shoes, but no tie or suit.
@bwDraco As would I. Unlike the idiot in AU who turns up in her gym gear.
no the idiots are the people who could not decide a case, reguardless of the atire of the parties.
Whoops: not suit, but dress shirt
Not sure how I missed that.
But people do need to dress appropriately.
21:41
which is pretty much what the Claim of the locations would provide, an unbiased jugement.
• In May, Jennifer LaPenta was jailed briefly after a judge in Lake County, Ill., held her in contempt for wearing an offensive T-shirt to court.

• In Inkster, Mich., Joseph Kassab was turned away in April from the courtroom for wearing black jeans. He missed his traffic court appearance and was fined, and he's challenging the dress code in the state Court of Appeals.

• The same thing happened to Linda West, who missed her court date after being refused entry in June to court in Bakersfield, Calif., for wearing flip-flops.
Couldn't find any specific mention of dresscode for US courts. I feel like it's probably left up to local districts to make their own requirements.
I'll tell you that I use business dress for exams.
@ben
You will NOT be allowed to enter the Courtroom wearing the following inappropriate clothing (this may result in an arrest warrant for failure to appear or a default of your civil case):

Shorts
Hats (men) or hair curlers (women)
Halter or tube top
T-shirt or muscle shirt
See-through top
Flip flops
Clothing that exposes your midriff or underwear
Ripped or torn jeans
Baggy pants that fall below your waist
Clothing with an emblem or wording that promotes illegal or inappropriate activity
Clothing that depicts or promotes violence, sex acts, illegal drug use or profanity
Where's that from, @DavidPostill?
21:45
City Court of Slidell
Yeah I just searched "Massachusetts judicial court dresscode" and that came up 3rd result lol
Oxford University actually require academic dress (cap and gown!) for final exams.
@BenRichards in the local courts around here, even an observer wont be let in the door, without proper attire, being quiet at all times, not having any recording equiptment (that could show the world what goes on) or even to use modern communications equiptment in quiet modes.
21:47
This is what I found for jurors:
> Performing jury duty is a serious obligation, and people reporting for jury duty should dress in a manner that indicates respect for the court and the people who are relying on the jury to resolve their disputes. While there is no specific dress code, in general you should avoid clothing that is excessively casual, revealing, or in bad condition when you report for jury service. If you are impaneled on a case, the judge may give you additional guidance on appropriate dress for a sitting juror.
Ahh
For court interpreters:
Court interpreters should dress in a manner consistent with the dignity of
the court and which does not attract undue attention, thus ensuring their
professional role as impartial participants. This applies also to attire or
symbols that represent specific religious, political, or social affiliations
that could create the perception of partiality or bias on the part of the court
interpreter.
@BenRichards Again, unless otherwise required, I would use business dress: dress shirt, pants, and shoes.
@bwDraco I always used business dress when I was called for jury duty
@DavidPostill: im from shreveport originally.
I don't think there's any set ordinances on dress code for defendants other than what is legally required when in public though
@DavidPostill: Louisiana.. Thats interesting though, never knew about those 'court' rules.
21:50
@Dave I suppose most people don't as hopefully they never need to go to court ...
If you were arrested in a criminal matter and brought to court, I'm sure your legal counsel would advise these things.
In civil court, they might mail you something with dress code advice when the court appearance is scheduled.
I haven't had to do either so I wouldn't know :P
I wonder what would happen if you decided to go to court dressed in an orange jumpsuit ;)
they treat the humans like they are kindergardners, and expect juries to follow everything they say , which mostly includes how they will judge the case, what the point of a "jury" or "jury of your piers" if A) none of the jury is anything like you, let alone your piers, retired drooling kindergardners who rollover and do exactally what the judge tells them. B)the decisions will be the same ones the judge would have made, reguardless of any 12 regular humans that dont agree thing going on.
You can tell i do not survive jury duty ever!
I'd bet the judge would yell at you. Wouldn't be good if you wanted leniency.
I suppose if you are being too disruptive in any manner, they can charge you with contempt of court.
@Psycogeek I take it you don't like the legal system ;)
21:55
How pessimistic! :P
@DavidPostill at this point i dont think it could be saved :-)
I always go in with good faith, and maintain that until given reason to otherwise.
Though I've never been called onto a jury panel.
Got close to being interviewed once, for a major case. They got all 12 or so jurors with just a few people to go before I would get interviewed.
And I was there all day
In NL they don't have juries.
How do they do it, then?
cases are already decided on paper, and in hidden back rooms (judges chamber) where no information is supposed to get out. A camera and audio in those places would turn snowdens revelations of the NSA (we already knew about), into revealing how much fudging of the law occurs.
22:03
@BenRichards One or more judges
@DavidPostill No concept of trial by peers I guess?
@BenRichards No
@DavidPostill Ah, huh.
In principle, criminal cases will be heard before a court comprised of three judges. In first instance, the case will be handled by the District Courts (apart from certain specific cases as outlined in the law, for example military cases or a serious offence involving abuse of office). In appeal, the Courts of Appeal are the competent court. Appeal in cassation can be submitted with the Supreme Court.
@bwDraco: this one's for you.. im sure you'll appreciate this one.
@qasdfdsaq will probably appreciate that video more though.
22:11
I think we used to have juries for some cases. Got rid of em.
prosecutors will tell wild tales, and make up fictional scenarios, based partly on available evidence, pulling at the heartstrings of drooling jurors, while in a court system designed to get at the "truth" , which prosecutors know would let murderers out of the system in 30 days if they did not embelish said truth, with glorious stories that keep the 2 sides of the truth from colliding.
real criminals spend more time in jail systems awaiting thier case going to court, than they will do time after said jugements (should they not die before they are made)
the police , never actually following known procedures, lie through thier teeth, not to change the case, but to inusre they dont loose thier job for the terrible way they handeled things, in the heat of the moment, when training goes out the door, and pannic is filling people with 40 bullets.
so yea, wear a suit, like that is the real problem :-)
defendants enter the court in bright orange jumpsuits, that might just as well say "If i wasnt guilty before, i have now been trained in the prison" all over them.
the judge during jury questioning, asks the jury if they could judge the case without bias, knowing the defendant was already in a jail system (where the crime occured) , or have any racial bias towards the black man. the all white jury just checkboxed the approprite form, and I am saying, HUH? seriously you think we can defy the fact that jail/prison systems are nothing like the rest of free society? and wondering how i would present my bias , without the other jurors also bowing out.
I said my piece, about cultural differences , and prison systems not being the same, and the (poor sap) defendant says "See I knew it".
Yes we all knew it, but were there to lie, it is court after all.
23:27
