@Bob looks like AVRCP 1.4 (?) flat volumes are causing distortion issues now
Bob
Bob

also, it's 1.4 :P

@Burgi Optical Image Stabilization
ah ok
Bob
Bob
> In 6.0.1, a change was introduced where the Android's volume control synchronizes with a connected Bluetooth device when running media apps.
O_O so they removed the whitelist?
i have a pounding headache
@Bob or made the whitelist much larger - the guy says in his bug report that he has a 2014 Corolla whose stock BT stereo doesn't do it
either that, or they switched to a blacklist and his Corolla is blacklisted
What was the whitelist for?
Bob
Bob
16:36
@allquixotic Good chance it simply doesn't support absolute volume.
yeah, that too
Is the whitelist a list of devices that do synchronize volume or ones that don't?

Bob
god, BMO is slow right now
@qasdfdsaq I explain in some detail here: bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=831911#c8
@allquixotic Oh yay, so I just upgraded to loads of bluetooth problems :-/

@allquixotic We have passed this defect on to the \/dev\/null and will update this issue with more information as it becomes available. (source)
not even going to try and fix that
Bob
Bob
lol
Oh lol.
So it's an Android-wide whitelist
Bob
Bob
16:39
@qasdfdsaq Pretty much.
That explains why Samsung's bluetooth headset doesn't work with Samsung's phone it was advertised with (volume control sync anyway)
@qasdfdsaq possibly with manufacturer-specific additions/removals
@qasdfdsaq which? the Samsung Level On doesn't actually support AVRCP 1.4 (tested with iPhone 6S+, which properly implements absolute volume control for all supporting devices)
if it doesn't work with an iPhone, it doesn't work, period... iPhone is the best BT implementation I've ever seen, and I'm not being at all bias to my $1000 phone when I say that
that gmail downloads folder question has gone HNQ O.o
@allquixotic HS3000
oh. idk about that thing
16:42
What on earth is avrcp 1.4
Oh interesting
> Back to work!
Oh yeah, work.
That thing I should be doing too. Bleurgh
I'm going to work now lol
16:43
I finish work in 20 minutes... or am supposed to
@qasdfdsaq how much have you actually done since you "started"?
Though given the amount of time I've spent on my new phone today, the chances are slim that I'll actually finish my work at 5
@allquixotic |<==== this much ====>|
btw @Bob Spotify poked me to try this and it seems nice: open.spotify.com/album/6yhHW85d9Z6D3uyvLZSZxI
@qasdfdsaq on a 72 DPI screen?
that's a fair bit
lol
My phone screen is like, nearly 600 ppi now
btw - github.com/lxc/lxd/tree/lxd-2.0.0.rc2 - OMG IT'S HAPPENING - LXD is going 2.0 for Ubuntu 16.04 :D

O_O
is that gitg lol

We’re working with silicon companies to ensure hardware‐assisted security and isolation for these containers, just like virtual machines today. We’ll ensure that the kernel security cross‐section for individual containers can be tightened up for each specific workload. We’ll make sure you can live‐migrate these containers from machine to machine. And we’re adding the ability to bind storage and network interfaces to the containers, just like virtual machines.
Bob

@allquixotic eh, when it works on mainline debian...

> Holly Lapsley Fletcher was born on 7 August 1996 in York.[2][3] Her middle name "Lapsley" is her mother's maiden name.[4] In adding the Scandinavian character to her last name, it was chosen in part due to her native Scotland's ties with Scandinavia as well as how it looked when written.[5]
Native Scotland?
York isn't in Scotland...

Låpsley still enjoys yachting and owns a boat called Theodore
Bob

@qasdfdsaq Presumably her mother?
it will be if alex salamon gets his way!
16:52
Oh hello, she's blonde.
Oh hey her debut album was released last week
probably why Spotify poked me to check it out.
anyway, stop distracting me and let me work!
@allquixotic What, 19 year old blondes?
Or because she owns a boat called Theodore
is it a nuclear powered aircraft carrier?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic still in the current version :\
/* the rc_black_addr_prefix and rc_white_addr_prefix are used to correct
 * IOP issues of absolute volume feature
 * We encoutered A2DP headsets/carkits advertising absolute volume but buggy.
 * We would like to blacklist those devices.
 * But we donot have a full list of the bad devices. So as a temp fix, we
 * are blacklisting all the devices except the devices we have well tested,
 * the ones in the whitelist.
 *
 * For now, only the rc_white_addr_prefix is used in the code while
 * rc_black_addr_prefix is kept here for future long term solution.
MW600 Bluetooth address is "58:17:0c:e8:b0:7a". It is not included in
AVRCP profile white list. So it can't support absolute volume. We need
to whitelist it by device name "MW600" instead device address method.
There's literally two addresses Android supports absolute volume with.
Why even bother, at this point??
Wait, no, prefixes. I can't read.
...isn't that still two devices?
But this guy in the issue reported it with a different device. I'm so confused.
> Remove absolute volume control whitelist

Remove the absolute volume control whitelist to enable absolute volume
control for all compatible devices.
wtf. why isn't that in my repo
O_O
@allquixotic Android doesn't even use bluedroid anymore!
Or maybe they renamed it?
Bluedroid repo hasn't been updated since 2015, and is only tagged up till 5.1.1
Apparently the Marshmallow one is called Fluoride.
Might be based on the same code...
17:35
@Bob Really? OMG.
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq ?
Oh, they removed it in 6.x. Probably 6.0.1.
Using a whitelist of two devices because they don't have enough crap to blacklist o_0
Bob
Bob
lol
That's like whitelisting network adapters by MAC prefix...
... like c'mon, if you're going to do that you might as well just go the whole hog with MAC access control.
Bleh. I hate whitelists
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Yup.
17:37
Why can't someone just put a damn option in the Bluetooth device settings menu => Enable volume control for this device.
Bob
Bob
Also, I hate permanent lists.
If they provided an option to enable/disable abs. volume per-device, that's fine.
Heck, disable it by default.
But blocking it on 99% of devices cause maybe some don't work... urk.
@qasdfdsaq Exactly!
Though, this is all implemented at a very low level.
It was in bluedroid, originally.
So any options would be non-trivial to add.
@Bob Though in some situations like the faulty TRIM commands, it may be prudent to use a whitelist because silent data loss is at stake.
Bob
Bob
Still, it's much much better UX.
Urgh one thing Samsung didn't fix on the S7 is the slippery-ass glass back.
I might have to take some sandpaper to the rear glass :-/
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Point. Even then, there should be a way to override it...
@qasdfdsaq Case?
Or stick a piece of rubber to the back?
17:39
@Bob Make a phone that I can barely tolerate because it's too big even bigger? No thanks
Urgh, I shouldn't have to! The old case on the S5 was perfectly decent. In fact, it was the best of all Samsung back covers IMO
The S5 had "soft touch" rubbery-plastic on the back case. Felt good, had decent grip, was durable and looked nice. Even worked perfectly well underwater, and was resistant to fingerprints and grease.
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq B... but premium aluminium! /s
It's glass, not aluminium
Bob
Bob
Oh. Is that better or worse?
They had to go copy the iphone, and not just any iphone, but an inferior previous-generation iphone!
Bob
Bob
Probably worse.
At least al doesn't shatter.
17:42
Glass is worse IMO, more slipperly, more fragile.
Only downside to aluminium is it makes antenna design harder because ... well it blocks antennas.
Bob
Bob
One day I want the G5, the next I want the S7 -_-
leaning towards G5 again
So wireless charging would be a no-go, and the antenna on Samsung phones are bad enough as it is
Bob
Bob
just gotta wait and see if they allow bootloader unlock... and somehow get my hands on an eu model
Me personally? I still prefer plastic. It's the most durable of the lot, is light, fully waterproof, and has no problem with blocking signals.
Bob
Bob
Ya. There's a stigma against plastic. But it works.
17:43
I wonder if I could remove the back glass and get a 3D printed plastic rear cover and glue it on myself.
Bob
Bob
Though, I do like the leather back on the G4 :P
Also good for grip.
I'd say the S5 back cover (my outright favourite) feels similar to dimpled leather.
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq You could probably get a replacement back cover off ebay for $1 next week.
Yeah but cheap ebay crap usually compromises the waterproofing of the phone.
"Allow Messages to access messages and photos on the device?"
Really? I have to manually approve the built-in messages app to access my text messages?
(even though they display on my notifications and I can reply to them from there?!)
Urgh. This glass back is really annoying me now. You don't notice these things until you actually hold it for an extended period of doing things, like writing messages and so forth
Why oh why Samsung, why. FFS. You were doing so well....
You were only two steps away from finally creating a flagship phone I had no gripes with. So close.
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Marshmallow. Still a good thing overall.
@qasdfdsaq Good point...
There we go.
122 tracks split from 6 videos.
Totalling 6 hours of music.
Involving VSCode, Notepad++, mp3splt-gtk, Mp3tag and two pieces of custom code.
And a whole lot of copying data back and forth between programs :\
18:03
@Bob There's so many different kinds of plastic. It doesn't have to be the cheap flimsy feeling kind. Cellphone makers that use the higher quality will usually refer to it as "polycarbonate" or something instead.
Bob
Bob
@BenRichards There's still a stigma attached to it.
That's where there whole "metal is premium" thing comes from.
@Bob Yes there is.
My Lumia 950 has a plastic backed case. I think it looks and feels great.
Also, they were genius. They made a super thin and light phone and gave it a removable battery and microSD card slot.
I don't accept the excuse of thinness keeping them from doing removable batteries anymore.
Oh hey look, they use "polycarbonate" in the review :P mashable.com/2015/11/20/microsoft-lumia-950-review/…
@Bob Yeah I like the new permissions model, but for the built in messaging app?!
Urg, too slippery. Just fell off the table. I definitely would not trust myself using this thing on a bike.
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Samsung dropped the ball there :P
Then again, if the built-in system-apps are not pre-approved, that's a good thing
Cause it'd prevent the debacle of Samsung's built-in keyboard downloading arbitrary code and running it as "system" -_-
Ooh, themes can change the colours of the settings and notifications displays. And AOD themes are free
18:39
@qasdfdsaq What's this? On Android? Like Windows Phone/Mobile's "accent color"? :P
@qasdfdsaq Looks like Samsung is obsessed with copying every last detail of iPhone, now including maximum slipperiness
@allquixotic: You haven't talked much lately. It seems you're busier than you used to be; has anything changed?
> S-s-sllipppperryyy! Hehehehaha
@bwDraco I've talked plenty lately... last night, this morning...
Hmm. Different times?
probably
weird work schedule
18:42
I got out of bed very late today.
7 AM? :P
11:30 AM today. Isn't exactly typical of me.
that's your body's way of saying !!no to your "CEO" schedule
I'm trying for more reasonable 7:00 to 7:30 wake-up times, which won't throw off my schedules.
Besides, my mom doesn't like my getting out of bed before 7 AM.
5:00 AM wake-up means I have to get to bed by 9 PM, and that conflicts with my late-night classes.
(I'm usually not home until about 10:15 PM after class.)
Bob
Bob
Ugh
18:48
I'm currently looking into SCCM Client Center to see if it'll help me understand what's going on with SCCM here
I have this problem, see.... Where I work, there are now two official Windows 7 images: 32-bit, and 64-bit. My laptop, and that of many of my coworkers, has 64-bit. Unfortunately, the IT pros haven't done their jobs fully, and many of the software dependencies we need either don't work at all, or they work if installed manually (but somehow fail to install automatically during imaging).
Software is distributed through an SCCM 2012 server.
There's a control panel app called "Run Advertised Programs" on 32-bit images that lets you elect to install any of the available packages, but only a tiny percentage of those packages show up on 64-bit machines in the SCCM 2012 client (which oddly looks nothing like Run Advertised Programs; it's called "Software Center".)
So I'm hoping I'll find a solution through Client Center
One package in particular contains a very special set of configuration files for the IBM DB2 ODBC client driver, and the driver itself is fairly hard to install without the automated packaging/scripting around it, let alone finding the right place to stick the config files.
This is blocking a lot of coworkers' ability to do their work atm
@allquixotic Switch to Mac! It Just Works!™
@BenRichards Easy to say as a consumer. Asking an enterprise to switch to a completely new platform would be a 5 year effort. Sarcasm aside, Mac sucks for many enterprise use cases, unless you're doing creative design or web development.
@allquixotic I know this. I was being sarcastic only. ;) Back to work with you!
I can't work. KB2819745 is still installing (has been for 10 minutes).
!!xkcd compiling
18:57
(I have that one up on my wall)
my cube looks pretty "lived-in" ;p
unrelatedly, Vornado Y U DO DIS? My desk fan spews 2.4 GHz noise that makes Bluetooth drop out, even on my vaunted iPerfect with my vaunted Sennheiser M2OEBTs >:(
clean up your microwave pollution Vornado
Oddly enough, I've never had a fan generate any significant amount of 2.4 GHz EMI.
@allquixotic I had it up on my wall in a previous job
I haven't put any xkcd things up yet
at my current one
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic It sucks for web design too. Safari is a piece of shit.
So KB3035583 installed itself on my work computer over the weekend.
I blocked its predecessor. But this one got in as a Recommended update
I don't know why IT just doesn't disable that update from coming through. I think that they just let Windows Updates through unrestricted.
yay, Shout-IRC has been set up :)
19:06
We will be getting Windows 10 eventually, but for now it's not certified to work on our network. (Indeed, I can't connect to the internal Wifi network on Windows 10 because it won't auto-configure the 802.11x security settings.)
Uninstalling KB3035583
I'll reboot now
is anyone is still using IRC, this thing is quite awesome: shout-irc.com
19:36
Dangit it's taking forever to reboot
At least I have alternative computers
It's been sitting at "preparing to configure windows" for 30 minutes
This can't be normal, but it says not to turn off the computer. I've done it before but I'm paranoid since this is a work PC
I'll continue working on my surface but if it doesn't reboot finally I'll do something
20:01
Woof
woof
Bob
Bob
20:12
Oh, did you change back to a dog?
Who change what huh?
I only woof because it's easier to type than meaow
Huh. Wow. The galaxy S7 is encrypted out of the box and you can't turn encryption off
That's going to be interesting for data recovery companies...
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq And possibly for rooting and custom ROMs :\
Well apparently rooting is already sorted...
I guess it must be the bootloader that enforces it? I wonder if that makes it locked...
IMO it's a good thing, most people (including me) are too lazy to encrypt their device even if they want to.
After all, I've been meaning to since the feature was first introduced 5 years ago... still never got around to it
20:29
It rebooted finally. Took it an hour.
@qasdfdsaq I flipped the switch on my Lumia 950. I like that Microsoft finally enabled you to do so without making the device corporate-managed.
20:43
@qasdfdsaq Good.
Dang this phone has a huge amount of useful new software features
Seems Samsung doesn't bother talking about them much anymmore at the release keynotes
Also the extra weight is going to make me need to exercise my little finger
@qasdfdsaq compared to what? the Note 4? the original Galaxy? a Palm Pilot?
@allquixotic The S5
I ddin't have the S6 long enough to be completely familiar with all its less-known features
yeah, if gestures, hotkeys, etc. are anywhere near as buried with Android + TouchWiz as they are with iOS, there's probably some random VolUp+double-tap home + swipe diagonally from all four corners simultaneously that makes unicorns pop up out of the screen in 3D
20:59
There's about fifty of those actually, but there's more
Like, answering calls by saying "Answer" to the phone, or unlocking the phone using a voiceprint.
And some silly crowd-sourced unknown number identification. And some other useful stuff.
Given the amount of fuss Samsung made about being able to scroll the screen with your eyes (which was later dropped because it was stupid), I'm surprised they've mentioned so little about the new features on this phone.
it was mainly a bit about the new hardware, a silly "water cooling" heatpipe and VR crap
And the whole Gear VR/Oculus crap is just meh. It's one of those things people will try once just to see what it's like and then shelve it.
And the only reason people even bother trying it, is cause they're being handed out for free.
@qasdfdsaq didn't Samsung watch Star Trek: The Next Generation? It warned us 20+ years ago about voice prints.
21:26
Hmm, either my lights are way off or the ambient light colour temperature sensor on the S7 is even wonkier than on the S5
Also they've dropped the IR gesture sensor :-/
And still no humidity sensor :-(
Guess I'll still be not retiring my S4 for a while yet
Also some nice new built-in equalizer effects that might replace my need for Winamp
21:44
Welp, decided to lock out the fax feature on the printer. It's not connected to a phone line, so why enable it?
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq heh, I revived my S4 just for that
Mine... is in a pretty sorry state :-/
Bob
Bob
It's now semi-permanently attached to a charger at my desk as a humidity sensor
Crap. There goes my train
Heh. I sorta have mine as a regular use sensor but it's not permanantly attached to the charger cause I use that for my main phone most nights
I should just put a second charger cable there like there used to be
Bob
Bob
Ouch
21:50
I've been putting off fixing it cause it hasn't been my primary phone for a couple years.
Bob
Bob
Mine's basically mint compared to that
lol
That's literally the worst I've ever had, but there's an explanation
O_O yeah, the dings on my iPhone 6S+ are non-existent compared to that
The glass is a cheapo $10 Ebay glass replacement I got when the original glass cracked.
Bob
Bob
I'm amazed it still works
21:51
However, it's nowhere near the quality of the original glass, hence a small crack in the replacement $10 glass eventually ends up like the above.
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq that sounds like a bad idea
Even without damaging it further, bits just keep falling off and off.
Bob
Bob
Would you have been better off keeping the original? :P
@Bob Meh. I had to fix it somehow and was too poor to pay £120 to get a replacement screen unit
Bob
Bob
Or doing the $10 replacement again...
21:52
@Bob Probably... except it kept cutting my fingers.
Bob
Bob
Ah
@qasdfdsaq what's that? Fruit Fly Glass 3? (compared to Gorilla GLass 3)
@allquixotic Lol, probably
I've basically been trying to decide whether to replace the whole display/case unit (cause it could do with a replacement) or just the glass
Thing is, there's another fault with the mainboard I've not been able to narrow down, that if not fixed, would make it a fairly undependable phone anyway.
Bob
Bob
Actually, that was my worry with the cracked protector... cracked glass + sliding finger = danger, my brain says
The cheap Ebay glass has done fairly little finger slicing since it broke
Bob
Bob
21:54
@qasdfdsaq what's the prob?
To be fair, while waitihg for a replacement, at one point I used it without any front glass at all. The internal AMOLED display itself is actually quite robust
@Bob Some silly hardware + software bug
Anytime anything tries to use audio output, the entire OS hangs. Unless the mainboard is bent in a specific manner.
(That constant bending to start the phone and listen to music probably didn't help preventing the glass cracks from spreading)
Bob
Bob
O_O
That's... oddly specific
I suspect some kernel module/driver is trying to initialize some piece of hardware but doesn't have any sort of graceful timeout designed into it. And the physical hardware itself has some dodgy contact
But having inspected it numerous times and tested it in 50 different stands, I'm yet to figure out exactly which MB component is at fault
And at the end of the day if it needs a mainboard replacement and a screen replacement you might as well buy a new phone. Which I already have 3 of
I'm rather surprised that the printhead alignment was this far off after running 132 pages through the printer.
Is it typical for the printhead alignment to drift this much during normal usage?
22:23
So I guess I now have to decide whether to repair my S4 and sell the S5, or keep the S5 and ditch the S4
22:59
Oh you've got to be fucking kidding me.
Bob
Bob
23:11
@qasdfdsaq ?
@Bob The S7 just locks up when I put an SD card in
Bob
Bob
o.o
@qasdfdsaq Is it just on hot insertion?
Or does it also happen if you put one in when it's powered off?
Nope. Fails to boot properly if you to a cold insertion
Bob
Bob
Do you have a fresh SD card?
@qasdfdsaq urk.
because that is so completely broken
Sometimes after about 10 minutes it says the card is corrupted and needs to be "Set up"
Bob
Bob
23:13
could it be the marshmallow unified storage thing?
protip: don't enable that
(it does some funky union FS thing and basically means you can't remove the SD card without wiping all your data, iirc)
a) Samsung has disabled that
b) I can't even get to the menus
c) Even if it was, it should hard lockup the device.
Bob
Bob
> All external Android storage must now be "set up" before it can be used. Attach external storage to the device and a notification will pop up saying the system has detected it. Press "set up" and you'll get the option to use the storage as "Portable" or "Internal." The "internal" option is the new one—this is the setting that "adopts" the external storage, and it's also kind of a promise from the user to the system that they won't remove the media.
@qasdfdsaq They disabled it? :S
@qasdfdsaq Yea, sounds broken.
Are you up to date? Apparently they did a bunch of updates.
Latest software version according to the auto-updater
Hmm, can't find my HTC desire
That's got a working other SD card in it
I do have a lot of non-working SD cards
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq I actually had a lot of SD trouble on my S4 :\
Occasionally apps that depended on the SD would lock up (e.g. Spotify)
Removing the card got them working again
that, or restarting the phone
That sounds like what I had when my card was dying
Bob
Bob
23:26
that was with a Samsung EVO Micro SD (32 GB)
@qasdfdsaq Entirely possible the card was dying.
I moved to a 64 GB Transcend card on my G4
Haven't had issues yet
Maybe I should test the Samsung card sometime.
It did start happening only after a few months of use.
But it also only happened maybe once or twice a month... maybe when a bad block was hit?
Oh hey a freebie Samsung 1GB card
Bob
Bob
how old is that? o.O
Because the failed Sandisk, Sony, and Kingston 64GB cards in a row aren't soul-destroying
The Sony being the only one that didn't destroy my data when it died
Well all my other SD cards work, just not the new 128GB one
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Can you try the 128 GB one on a different device?
Works fine in my S5, S4, and PC
Bob
Bob
23:38
@qasdfdsaq H2testw?
Is your S5 running Marshmallow?
Actually scratch that, I think it hangs my S4 as well
Bob
Bob
Apparently M does a speed test on SD cards... though perhaps only if you do the internal storage thing.
Nah, it's 5. something
Huh it causes my S4 to hang, and crashes Google Play Music
But if you LET google play music crash and don't restart it, it works fine!
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Try H2testw on it...
Should tell you if there are any bad blocks
Or at least you'll notice the test hanging :P
