approximately how much latency?
I have just been restarted! This happens daily automatically, or when my owner restarts me. Ready for commands.

Hello World
@JourneymanGeek Ugh... Samsung does that shit with my S5.
Then whole point of the new defaults setting thing is to stop that sorta thing happening
@JourneymanGeek that explains a few SU questions. would really tick me off too if i couldnt find the hack to stop it.
it would be "ok" and normal for update procedures to retract stuff to default registry settings for that item being updated. It would be (instead) pure evil if they have routines in there or in the auto "fixing" stuff that continually sets it back to defaults.
00:56
@PatoSáinz Too much.
Although to be fair, since I spend several hours a day on RDP, I'm used to it by now.
I have just been restarted! This happens daily automatically, or when my owner restarts me. Ready for commands.

@qasdfdsaq well SSH for Windows is coming... in Valve time but coming anyway
dog wash. Something that is prolly a little more useful if your dog's bathed in mud first ;p
@PatoSáinz not really valve time.

You're running phantomjs on windows?

fkey different. Expected.
Cookies. COOKIES.
Present on Windows. Missing on Linux.
@qasdfdsaq Yea. 2.1.1 for both machines.
coooookies
Hello World :)
Bob
Bob
Next question: why no cookies on Linux? :S
Let's see.
...
waiiiit a second
god fucking dammit.
are the cookies where they should be?
Bob
Bob
chat login failed in the first place. why didn't I check that
so SSO fails on pjs. but only on linux.
01:06
cause no one expects the spanish inquisition the most obvious thing to check?
Bob
Bob
next question: why?
wtf is a 'flapping eth2 connection'?
sorry had to :-)
eth2 would indicate the third ethernet adaptor, prolly on an older debian/ubuntu system?
01:08
@JourneymanGeek But why is it flapping?
flapping... maybe they meant another f word, or its connecting and disconnecting?
My internet keeps dropping
@MichaelFrank That's about as vague a question as "Why is my computer crashing"
Where should I look?
@qasdfdsaq Sorry, What is flapping?
01:09
Flapping is when a connection repeatedly goes up and down.
@thebluesquirel typically this is a chat room as opposed to general live support. We have no idea why your internet is dropping.
Sorry
Any ideas what could be causing in ifconfig?
nope
and that question makes no sense whatsoever
Bob
Bob
Protip: when asking what could be wrong with your configs, post the damn configs
01:11
And package loss???
dude. My psychic hat is at the diviners.
Bob
Bob
If you're losing packages, you should probably contact your post office.
If you're losing packets, you should probably contact your internet post office. Or maybe your ISP. If you can reproduce on multiple machines. Bleh.

01:14
Sorry, I'm not in a particularly good mood right now.
PJS is doing funky stuff.
I thought it was funny :)
@Bob what changed between when it was working and when it wasn't?

@thebluesquirel get logs
Oh, does cavil connect in regular or mobile mode?
Bob

@JourneymanGeek Regular.
@JourneymanGeek Uhm. Absolutely no idea.
I'm going into this blind.
01:16
so that couldn't have changed
Bob
Bob
At some point @allquixotic updated PhantomJS, I think
But I'm running the exact same version here.
@Bob yeah, but that's a useful starting point to consider
could you try an older version?
Bob
Bob
Hm. Lemme see.
Might work, but that would be suboptimal.
Would narrow down the range of 'what's broken'
no point hacking at the code, if the runtime is borked
Bob
Bob
IIRC it was broken before.
But I'm honestly not sure of the timeline here.
Ok, running with 2.0.0.
Nope.
Nup.
Same issue.
I'm digging through the packet caps now, but the glaring difference is the lack of cookies on the linux side
oh, how awesome
I've managed to break it on windows too
this might be a good thing
...nope I have no idea why
running the exact same script as before

@Insane I do seem to remember it does

Q: Age close votes after 14 days, regardless of views, allowing recasting

Shog9I've been putting this off for a long time... Close vote aging - the deactivation of votes that haven't resulted in a question being closed - is a critical part of the vote-to-close system, but has something of a troubled history: all too often, it has been more annoying than useful, capricious...

there's the long boring explaination with graphs. Which makes it all better

scrolled through, read nothing, feel smarter due to amount of graphs

Bob
Bob
01:49
ok
stackauth makes a request to /users/login/universal/request
which responds with a short list (in json) of domains to auth to
then a request is made to each domain for a gif with a querystring that IDs the user. the responses set the required cookies
for some reason, pjs is loading the chatpage before getting the response (sometimes the first, sometimes the second) even though I've got a 10s delay in there... it loads the chat page in ~2s? :S

Had to tether from my phone briefly due to a brief loss of connectivity at the cable modem. It's up now but I had to spend a bit of time to tell Windows that this is a metered connection.
(Tethering is built into our existing wireless plan and simply draws on the data allowance.)
I do not take the decision to tether lightly.

@Jonno ah yes saw it yesterday
Anonymous
their security is atrocious
security is hard and unsexy ;p
Anonymous
their mysql user password was upMint

and they didn't even follow the golden rule of being hacked: assume everything is compromised, burn the fucking servers to the ground and rebuild
What's embarassing is they got hit by someone who prolly wasn't actually a professional.
lol
>_>
Anonymous
04:53
when they got the site back online it got owned again almost immediately: attackers had left a backdoor
My database passwords are typically completely random
The hackers seem to be selling the entire dump for $80. Honestly I'm surprised how quickly it got caught, they could have had the site in a compromised state for a long time without arousing much suspicion.

I guess it's one of those things where it started off so small they never considered changing it.
If its worth doing, its worth doing right, right from the start
Anonymous
wait, no. I got confused
Imagine how many sites are up right now hosted on a server with root//root as a default
04:59
(But hey, my server got compromised by xordos, so I clearly learnt this the wrong way)
Anonymous
its password was <n-expletive word that could probably get me banned from the nice SE chatrooms>1

and then, after it was hacked, the new password was the same nice word that could get me banned from touchy-feely SE, but with its i turned into a 1... leet
seriously ._.

05:01
yes. I kid you not.
If you don't need to remember it, you gotta have it like a male duck....
Long and wierd
and there's no reason for a DB to be open to the world
iirc mysql restricts it to localhost by default
Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek it doesn't help much if your attack surface on localhost is huge
close all the ports
and most attacks are fairly trivial
Anonymous
well they haven't been compromised since then afaik
Do I need to quote mickens again?
05:04
I really wouldn't be surprised to find out there are a huge amount of servers running on a DMZ with root//root still in place.
Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek go ahead

@Jonno yup
> 'Basically, you're either dealing with Mossad or not-Mossad. If your adversary is not-Mossad, then you'll probably be fine if you pick a good password and don't respond to emails from [email protected]. If your adversary is the Mossad, YOU'RE GONNA DIE AND THERE'S NOTHING THAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.'
@Jonno at this point of time I consider having a root account that can be connected over SSH a liability. (Not as bad with key based auth, but sudo is such a nice thing)
If nothing else, it makes it slightly harder to bruteforce since they need to guess your username and password
Anonymous
@PatoSáinz making loads of money singing songs about being heartbroken and whiny?
05:07
@JourneymanGeek He's got a point. I highly doubt she's ever lost an entire MySQL database.
Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek yea my habit is something like 1. disable root 2. enable key auth 3. fail2ban 4. have logs sent to me
bad blood. Clearly a song about someone she knows hacking her system
Anonymous
but I still just do sudo -l and get me a nice bash shell

Anonymous
sudo -l ftw
Anonymous

Bob
Bob
Typing sudo before everything is an auditing thing.
It's also rather useless for anyone in a single-user/single-admin setup.
hmm a word for hacking popular/celebrity/political peoples ? HackARotzi ?
Anonymous
05:10
@Bob could be solved by other means I guess. Never thought about the auditing part tho
@Bob also means you drop out of 'root' the moment you're done with it
Bob
Bob
@PatoSáinz Point is you know which account/user does what.
@JourneymanGeek And that's an anti-accident thing.
Anonymous
@Bob if your audit is that easy to circumvent then you are doing it wrong
Bob
Bob
Not a significant security measure by any means.
@Bob yup. Though some people cargo cult and sudo everything whether or not its needed
Anonymous
05:12
@JourneymanGeek next time I write --no-preserve-root by accident I'll remember that
@PatoSáinz and end up bricking your system...
Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek heh I hope my distro is sensible enough to disable that part of systemd
Anonymous
since distros can fix that default mess
Bob
Bob
@PatoSáinz The point is you only provide elevation to run specific commands where necessary.
Not very secure either, IMO, but some people recommend it.
As soon as you let everyone get a shell as root, it's impossible to figure out who's who anymore.
Anonymous
Anonymous
05:16
@Bob yea. Well, people need to stop doing curl http://totallysecure.ru/dorunme.sh | sudo bash too
@PatoSáinz naw. docker is the new curl http://trustme.su/runme.sh | sudo bash
and will produce a new generation of lazy programmers and admins.
Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek fucking docker
