Got ideas on how to make the most of my VPS? I have lots of unused resources on my main server but need the extra RAM and CPU for infrequent burst loads during maintenance.

That was a wee bit of mod abuse
Started writing an answer. Decided it should be a comment. Posted, and converted it ._.
yay email server can send and recieve
now I just need to get the fiddly bits like anti spam and such setup, hook it up to a mail client and so on.

Bob
o.o
@JourneymanGeek Don't forget SPF & DKIM
Oh, and PTR records.

very rude comment from one of your members... no point hanging around on this site

Bob
Oookay...? Because one person represents the entire site now?
shrug your choice.

Going to do that

That would be me. He asked for support on a corporate network "My workplace uses Office 365 Outlook (Online Web Access) for our email". I suggested "Why not ask your IT department? That is what they are there for ... ". Does anyone else think that is rude?

9:05 AM
er...
CONTEXT PLEASE!
Link me the question, and I'll get out the rolled up newspaper as needed ;)

superuser.com/questions/981890/how-to-download-and-save-multiple-emails-from-out‌look-365-owa
Next time I will use my standard comment "Issues specific to corporate IT support and networks are off topic, see What topics can I ask about here?. Please talk to your IT department.". Is that rude as well?

Bob
@DavidPostill ...yea, that's not rude.

hmm.
I'd probably have worded it a bit differently

Bob
Perhaps a tad abrupt, but I never really cared for flowery language anyway.

Not rude enough for the newspaper

Bob
9:07 AM
I'd say it's more unnecessary than anything else.

But I would probably have gone "You might be able to use a regular mail client to do that. However, the best people to advice you on the settings for doing this would be your IT department"

@Bob Phew. I never been accused of being rude before ;)

I might have been once or twice...
(typically people would find that hillarious tho)

Heya
I have got some warm up for you guys : superuser.com/questions/981956/…
:D
Thanks for the edit Journeyman, that was silly mistake. :)

@DavidPostill I had a whole question dedicated to abusing me a week or so ago.

9:26 AM
@MichaelFrank Really? Was it discussed on meta? I vaguely remember something along those lines.

Hey you're here. :D
Is there any specific event log we need to look into ?

@DavidPostill Uhh... I don't remember. I don't really go on Meta much.

Too bad (!) it's a public holiday tomorrow...

holiday tomorrow ? for what ?
Well today is Sunday over here.

Bob
Public holidays in Australia are declared on a state and territory basis, with the exception of national public holidays. == Nature of public holidays == Traditionally, work, public or private, were entitled to take off a public holiday with regular pay. In recent years this tradition has changed somewhat. For example, businesses that are normally open on a public holiday may request employees to work on the day, and refusal can only be denied by the employer on reasonable business grounds. The entitlement to penalty rates was eliminated entirely in many workplaces under WorkChoices; however since...
...wiki oneboxing is broken
click the link for the specific event :P

xD
BTW, We celebrate labour day on 1st of May every year.

Remember AU is upside down ;)
October is summer. Better to have a holiday when the weather is nice.

10:10 AM
AUS is one of the hottest country. Isn't it ?
People use so many cosmetics to save their skin from sun-burn. That's what I heard; Don't know if it's really true.

Bob
@TheLittleNaruto ...not really. It's more that we have a giant hole in the ozone layer above us. And it's sunscreen, not cosmetics.

@Bob I see. So that's the reason.
@Bob , got any idea on my windows auto-restart pain ?

Bob
@TheLittleNaruto nup, haven't even looked
I'm a tad busy at the moment
(of course I procrastinate by chatting...)

@TheLittleNaruto: No, they wear funny hats, with corks.
And don't forget the dropbear repellent.
and the huge knife in case of dingos trying to steal your barbie.

10:26 AM
Sounds like Aussies are fun.
@Bob lol
@Journeyman Do you have got any solution for this issue ?
Sob! Sob! :'(

@TheLittleNaruto: if I did, I'd post an answer.

Yeah! You're right.

(same as anyone here!)

So, looks like I don't have any solution. :/

Bob
@TheLittleNaruto Dig into your machine's firmware.
And also try disabling fast startup.
If disabling fast startup works, that means it's not starting, it's waking up (from the perspective of the hardware/firmware).

10:36 AM
@Bob How do you do that ? (Note: I have not much knowledge on Windows)

Bob
waking up can be caused by keypresses, mouse clicks/movement, network activity, etc etc etc
@TheLittleNaruto ...that has nothing to do with Windows. Just go into your UEFI settings and look around.
But my hunch is on fast startup (Windows thing) + waking up.

@Bob Well, I have tried that already, and I have mentioned that in my question.

Bob
ah. I skimmed a bit. Sorry.

C:\>powercfg /waketimers
There are no active wake timers in the system.
So nothing is there trying to wake up the system.
Restarting PC...

Bob
waketimers refers to a very specific subset of timers
HID and network wake are completely separate

10:54 AM
I see.
I don't know what should I look into anymore.
I think I should take a nap.
I have been trying to solve it since the morning.

Output from powercfg -devicequery wake_armed?

It's already 4:27PM.
C:\Users\BabyNaruto>powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

There's something very screwy going on here.

1 hour later…
2:40 PM
@Bob Not necessarily, a program can allocate a massive heap but never use it
It's all "I might need this"
I thought with Java you specified the heap size when running the program? docs.oracle.com/cd/E15523_01/web.1111/e13814/…

Q: Recovering files when Windows 7 MBR has been corrupted

xCareSystem Stats: Type: 64-Bit Desktop; OS: Windows 7 Premium; HD: Seagate Barracuda 750GB, S.M.A.R.T. Enabled. History: There is the complex situation I'm dealing with, I'll do my best to break it down: I've been up against some nasty guys in the gaming field and a few days ago, security soft...

Thank you for the discussion room, been very helpful. :)
Quick question: When I post an answer to a Question from someone, does it appear anywhere or notify people that say, so-and-so answered this question?
So far I've posted answers to like 6-7 questions, including this one that's been around a while...
1
A: What is the correct way to plug DNS leaks when running OpenVPN?

xCareA VPN is great for encrypting data, however 2 of its other main functions is assuming another IP address and changing nationality to access location-restricted content. It functions because the VPN allows you to select an alternate exit server, where it pretends you're actually located by routing...

where does it appear @JourneymanGeek is it something that I see?
or for others only?

should be in your inbox

3:08 PM
I have an inbox here? like internal e-mail?
or perhaps you meant the other inbox..

ah, that's what that is. How do I access the Inbox?
says Inbox on the header but it's unclickable in mine

that's odd
it should be clickable

Bob
@Mokubai can, yes. should? not nearly that much.
moreso when the giant heap is paired with 40$ CPU usage (expected ~0), and basically breaks the appserver
also, it doesn't happen with profiling enabled. go figure.

ah, had to be logged in to the main site apparently. I scrolled all the way to the bottom of the list and clicked See all Inbox items. That brought me to a Stack Exchange login screen and got to the Inbox from what looks like my Profile page.
It's not like a regular e-mail though, won't let me send to other members or receive mails from them, right?

3:21 PM
No, there is no private messaging system here.
If someone replies to your questions or answers then you'll get a notification

Okay ty.

The only way you can "talk" to people is via chat or replying via comments, and preferably comments shouldn't be used for extended discussion

right, I remember that.
Do we all have 1 profile per room or is that all in one?
or I guess it means per account
The Network Profile seems to be the universal one, all the activity from all the other branches appears to be grouped in there.

one profile per site, and one per chat server
I believe there's 2 or 3 chat servers, the common one, and chat.SO
and er... profiles can be synced (in terms of content), but its a single 'account' everywhere

uh... ok, that's going to take a bit to keep up to.. any place where those profiles are grouped for easy access?

3:31 PM
Well normally you wouldn't need to muck with profiles outside site use

so the different branches have unique profiles and the Network Account links them.
does that mean I should be able to access all of them from the Network Profile?

so far I'm part of 2 branches, Stack Exchange and SuperUser, there is also Meta's beneath them, apparently they come with each category.
Are there any limits to how many branches I can be part of?
I call them branches because it all looks like a kind of tree structure
As a general rule, so I won't get cluttered I'll only join branches I find of interest or have a need for unless there's a limit to that.

No limit, you can create an account on every site if you like.
You can "hide" account so they're not shown on your profile
But generally we just call them sites, and the wider group as the "Network"

3:49 PM
I see. What does the "Network" do, is it like a higher level Yahoo! Answers type site or is it meant like a tech forum or something else?
I am not familiar with Stack Exchange lol, first time I saw it was last week. :(

The Network is what we call the entire group. Stack Exchange itself basically. Off of the network are all the individual sites.

Stack Exchange sites are NOT forums ;)

it's just a question an answer site then basically, right?

Yes!

so a help site through the Q & A format :)

3:55 PM
http://stackexchange.com/tour "
Stack Exchange is a network of 149 communities that are created and run by experts and enthusiasts like you who are passionate about a specific topic. We build libraries of high-quality questions and answers, focused on each community's area of expertise.

We're a little bit different from other sites. Here's how: " ... "This site is all about getting answers. It's not a discussion forum. There's no chit-chat."

The Network showing individual sites (from here):

that's nice. thanks for helping. it's not like a wiki or stuff like that then

"help site" is a bit simplified, though... in reality, we only provide help if doing so happens to add to the body of knowledge on the site... if the question and answer are not contributing to reusable knowledge, we'll probably close it

"I love the unicorns who hang out behind my kitchen, but they do tend to eat rather a lot of the daisies. What can I do about this?" > "The easiest solution is to spray the daisies lightly with corn syrup using a standard vegetable oil sprayer. It won't hurt the flowers, but unicorns hate the sickly-sweet smell and will avoid it at all costs!" LOL

in that respect we're a lot closer to Wikipedia -- you don't see 1000 posts on the Talk page of an Nvidia card on Wikipedia with questions begging for help with blue screens

3:58 PM
+1 @allquixotic

@allquixotic cool!

Super User is like a really long FAQ combined with a really, really, really long IAQ about everything related to computing (IAQ = Infrequently Asked Questions)
but even if you were an author of an IAQ, you wouldn't be so silly as to repeat yourself by asking the same question over and over
you'd at least make sure each question is distinct from the others

@Mokubai I'm surprised my rep 32.1k is higher than yours 31.1k ;)

Right. The place does look well organized and neat.

UK chatters rep race GOOOOOOOOOOOOO

4:02 PM
@allquixotic LOL. He's a mod and I'm not ...

@DavidPostill, how does that rep thing work, do I get rep for every upvote or for the first one each day?
or was that just a one time thing

200 pt rep cap per day

yes, but I noticed after getting 10 rep for an upvote, if I make another upvote it doesn't give me any more rep?

you casting upvotes doesn't give you any rep

I did get 10 rep for an upvote though

4:04 PM
you have to receive upvotes on questions or answers you make on the site, or accepted edits at low rep, or accepted answers
well, no, you didn't get 10 rep for casting an upvote - you can check your rep history to see why you got that rep, but it wasn't because you casted an upvote
could have been 2 upvotes on one of your questions, or you accepting the answer on 5 questions you asked, or one upvote on one of your answers

Ok. how do I get rep on upvotes of my content then, do users pay attention to answers, are there sort of answer watchers who upvote stuff? or is it just random
lol, asked that and am seeing a little clippy with a hint box in my screen..

@xCare Time for you to read the help centre ;) What is reputation? How do I earn (and lose) it?

brought me to something called Flair... looks like another feature. ok thanks for the link @DavidPostill

LOL I got the clippy too. But it doesn't answer the question ;)

is that a site feature, the clippy thing?

4:13 PM
I've no idea. First time I saw it.

haven't seen one of those since Windows 98 lol
there used to be a Clippy Desktop Assistant who would answer questions and talk to you, say random stuff...

Hey guys I have a folder with lot of html files, I would like to extract only the text contained in the body of this html to a txt file, how can I do that ?

nostalgia creeping in lol

You will get upvotes if people like or find your questions/answers useful. Down votes if they don't. Not useful includes all sorts of stuff like off topic, too broad, wrong site ...
Or Tim Post lost his keys again.

so it's a random thing then

4:17 PM
Is superuser a good place to ask my question ?

Mostly it is not random (other than who actually reads your question/answer). If you are a good boy you get a gold star otherwise you get spanked ;)

I ask on this chat because I don't really know if the question is suited for SU

oh ic, that's where the +10 rep came from when upvoting the first time, it was because I unlocked a badge or achievement I think
@Clippy yes it's a good place to ask questions.. (I'm guessing you're a bot lol). no offence.
Thanks for the answers guys, I'l take a break and grab some lunch, be back in a bit :)

I'm not a bot.
Send me a CAPTCHA, thanks for your answer though :)

Bob
yay. out of permgen.
something is definitely leaking hard
looks at hibernate

4:23 PM
Hmm @Clippy So how come the first time I see you here is when "Clippy" appears in a chat post?
@xCare superuser.com/users/503876/xcare?tab=reputation&sort=time shows exactly how you got your rep.
@Clippy Here is a CAPTCHA for you ;)

Sending the image to Indians employees

LOL If the get that one right then try this one oddee.com/_media/imgs/articles/a438_c13.jpg
And you still didn't answer my first question "So how come the first time I see you here is when "Clippy" appears in a chat post?"

@DavidPostill yeah, I've been slipping behind on rep lately. Too much time killing spammers....
It would be a pity to slip off the front page... superuser.com/users?tab=Reputation&filter=all

> In accordance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act 1998, I do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. Such children are hereby prohibited from submitting personal information to this website.
Terms of use and privacy policy for my website have been updated to add the above clause.

4:39 PM
@DragonLord is that honestly a problem on your personal website?

It's a matter of regulatory compliance.

Simply complying with the regulations is easy, it actually being a problem is something else...

@Mokubai I never knew about the front page. Something to aim for ;) I have slipped off the week/month/quarter stackexchange.com/leagues page myself though. A poor start to October ;) For a long while I had my picture there ...

You have a lot of "give me your email and personal detail" forms on your site? If not then that clause is worthless.

Users can submit email addresses through the blog.

4:46 PM
@DragonLord Hmm. Saying it is "prohibited" doesn't mean they can't do it. But a good question nevertheless.
You could move your website offshore ;)
If you can trust Wackypedia "In December 2012, the Federal Trade Commission issued revisions effective July 1, 2013, which create additional parental notice and consent requirements, amended definitions and added other obligations, for organizations that (1) operate a website or online service that is “directed to children” under 13 and that collects “personal information” from users or (2) knowingly collects personal information from persons under 13 through a website or online service"

Hello, I'm having issues with connection with US servers(in a game) all of a sudden for no reason. My ping seems fine but the game responds half a second later than it's suppose to. Would contacting my provider be of any help?
From europe btw

I don't think your website is "directed to children" or "knowingly collects personal information from persons under 13"
The important words being directed or knowingly.

5:02 PM
Aye, generally such regualtions are made to enforce rules on companies that have the ability to collect massive amounts of data (Stack) or the intent to collect data (such as Disney sites directed at kids). They really won't care about one dude running a website that might accidentally pick up a sub-teenage follower.

5:16 PM
!!/xkcd 1000

5:41 PM
There, added a couple more links on it. I've run several virtual desktop utils, never had much problems with resolution really. But then again, I'm not that picky :)
2
A: How to set workspaces with different resolution

xCareThe method differs depending on your PC and graphics card settings. For AMD for example, you can adjust different resolutions from the Catalyst Center. For Ubuntu, you can use console commands to access nVidia settings. Check out a forum thread for this question here: http://ubuntuforums.org/sh...

oh, thanks for that link @DavidPostill
Hello @Clippy (just checking if it answers)

@xCare Clippy seems to have gone away (without answering my question) ;)

3v0
what sort of IT knowledge stuff looks good on a CV
obvioustly AD but what else

idk @3v0, but your profile pic looks neat. How do I get a nicer looking profile display image @DavidPostill?

lol, now clippy pops up when I ask a question.

3v0
5:51 PM
this is actually the default profile pic
all users get this when they sign up

you're lucky then... guess I got stuck with the boring blue square lol

@xCare Goto edit your profile > change picture

ok, checking

3v0
I have dabbled with SQL but not the database language

!!/xkcd 1024

3v0
ms office, terminal serives ,Group Policy is probably useful but very common on CV's

the identicon is bland square too... any way to refresh or get a new one?

3v0
it may take a few minutes to update, like usernames do

6:08 PM
138
Q: How is the default user avatar generated?

alextanscIs there a name for the default avatars that are generated for users who do not assign one themselves? Not the avatar of the blank user, but the one made up of shards, shapes, and colours: Is there an online generator for something like that? See also: How do I change my profile ...

3v0
getting the image names should be easy enough

@3v0 How can you post in chat when you don't have a parent profile?

secret hax?

3v0
I do it just has a different name
names take a while to update

These only 2 identicons it's giving me look really awful lol. Time to innovate..

6:14 PM
@3v0 "I have dabbled with SQL but not the database language" this doesn't make sense. If SQL isn't "Structured Query Language (database query language)" then what do you mean?

3v0
isnt rhere SQL apps?

SQL San Carlos, California Municipal Airport (Airport Code) maybe?

whenever anyone says SQL, inevitably my mind hears them say "squeal"
lol

Or "SQL Squelch (radio communications)" that is close to squeal ;)

yes!

6:17 PM
@3v0 If you are not writing SQL queries then it probably shouldn't be on your CV.

3v0
you have to bend the truth within reason though right?

Bob
protip: do not put git repos inside dropbox folders.
brb while I purge my repo and clone from scratch -_-

@3v0 There's bending truth and then there's lying. I know how to kludge SQL to give me data in Python, but that doesn't mean I "know" SQL.

3v0
the apps do manager the databass but as a GUI
manage*

Likewise "I installed MS SQL Server" does not translate to "I know SQL", it's closer to say you know of SQL than you know it.

3v0
6:22 PM
but thats not really easy to word in a CV
' I know of sql'

Yeah, I know of APL as well but it doesn't mean I can write APL programs (I can't)

Saying you know SQL when you don't would be worse for you. Especially if a job relied on it. Best case is that you simply get "released" from the job in your probation. Worst would be that they subtly hint to your next job prospect that your CV was a lie.

3v0
I wouldnt say its lying as the app is called SQL
but im inexpeirienced with employment
it was like microsoft sql server

"I know how to use an SQL GUI" is only one step above being able to use Excel IMO. Did you play with relationships? Did you actually need to modify the queries? Did you use it to create reports? Did you actually use it?

Can you write a select statement? Do you know what 3rd normal form is? Do you know how many "Codd's twelve rules" there are? Hint - the answer is not 12. If you can answer all of these without a wackypedia/google search then maybe you can put SQL on your CV. Otherwise +1 @Mokubai
You installed SQL server? That is not using SQL.

3v0
6:27 PM
everybody googles stuff
okay

I've written a database in MS Access, and backed it by an SQL server towards the end. That does not mean I'm an SQL expert.

3v0
hmm

Yes, but you can't Gargle in your interview.

Your CV can be "fleshed out", that's expected, but not to that extent. SQL can easily be a whole job.

What's a "stored procedure"?

3v0
6:29 PM
ah right
I don't have any expeirience really of IT in an enterprise

That's fine though, junior positions assume a lot of on-the-job training will be required
Be honest about what you can do though.

3v0
job descriptions tend to have massive lists of 'required' skills
but you probably wont even come across all of them in the actual job

@BenRichards Next time it happens, press ESC

The required skills are unfortunately quite often buzzwords that HR are looking for when they place the job ad. Not necessarily what you actually need for the job. Be honest and apply anyway. I got my last job - supporting Video telephony over VoIP - without knowing anything at all about video or VoIP. The important thing was that I knew how to troubleshoot internet connections. The rest I learnt on the job. I ended up as a team leader and trainer for that technology.

3v0
6:45 PM
I see

Hi everyone why i cannot ask questions anymore ? could you upvote my some questions i am new programmer and have usually questions

@waleedd32 This is a room for Super User, you're not question blocked there and as far as I can tell you don't even have a profile.

so why i get this message when i ask question : You have reached your question limit, Sorry, we are no longer accepting questions from this account. See the Help Center to learn more.

@Mokubai he asked the same question in my room and I told him to ask here

6:59 PM
could you upvote my some question ? maybe then i can ask again
and sorry my english its not my native language

Sorry, no. You should post good answers and contribute to the community, not beg for upvotes.

how can i answer to others problems while i am my self new programmer ?

Bob
7:26 PM
kill me now.
I just spent 6 hours trying to figure out why my database was randomly losing data
turns out it was a hibernate bug
that was fixed a while back
but NB had the older version

I forgot to mention that commercial bread also contains L-cysteine, an amino acid that acts as a dough conditioner. Most of the hair used to make L-cysteine is gathered from the floors of barbershops and hair salons in China, by the way.The hair is dissolved in acid and L-cysteine is isolated through a chemical process, then packaged and shipped off to commercial bread producers. You know how Jewish people eat kosher? Well Muslims eat halal which does not allow for consuming any human parts which would include hair. Makes you appreciate that homemade bread that molds in a few days. — kelly 3 hours ago

@Bob: That's a question for skeptics I suspect

@JourneymanGeek I googled L-cysteine. It actually is made out of human hair, duck feathers, or hog hair...
