why do people have smileys as avatars?

Q: What’s with all the colorful avatars?

kinokijufI noticed that several moderators have just changed their avatars in a similar style: Is there any backstory behind this?

I will never relinquish my Doge
Netflix does that
with avatars

lol. I'll be switching back to my usual ava later

Q: Why is processing a sorted array faster than an unsorted array?

GManNickGHere is a piece of C++ code that seems very peculiar. For some strange reason, sorting the data miraculously makes the code almost six times faster: #include <algorithm> #include <ctime> #include <iostream> int main() { // Generate data const unsigned arraySize = 32768; int data[arr...

@JourneymanGeek No it doesn't. At least not in Brazil.

@ThatBrazilianGuy: apparently they do in the US and some of europe ;p
And well.. dosen't do me any good ;p

@TheDoctor Relinquishes doges?

No, the smiley faces;

Bob
@allquixotic Nothing in the news. I still have no idea what's going on! :P
They've probably left by now.
I'll be heading down there for lunch soon.
@allquixotic That's a whole lot of votes.

@Bob and informative!
(I didn't know all of that)
knew about branch prediction but not that it makes such a huge difference on a high entropy dataset

Bob
@allquixotic Wait, you only just read it? O_O
Keep up, man! :P

@Bob I mean, I didn't know about that Q until now
(when I posted it)

Bob
I spend a fair bit of time going through hot questions nowadays :P

1:56 AM
I knew about branch prediction and that newer CPUs do it much more intelligently, and knew about some of that optimization stuff (particularly the loop interchange) but had no clue it was such a big deal, or that Intel's compiler is so much smarter
I'm expecting LLVM and its superior architecture to make it easier for folks to write really robust micro optimizations into LLVM's codegen, such that it rivals or beats Intel's compiler and gcc

Bob
@allquixotic I'm just surprised you haven't seen that question.

will take smart people and lots of time, though

Bob
I mean, it's only the highest voted on the entire network :P
@allquixotic It would be difficult to beat Intel.

hehe, after the one about parsing HTML with regex
well no, not after
but the HTML with regex one is more well known imo

Bob
And it'll take some time after the release of a new Intel arch.
(I'm just gonna ignore AMD CPUs)

1:58 AM
new Intel arches don't improve general computing perf all that much these days, though
they target very specific niches that have traditionally been slow
not, you know, MS Word's business logic
I wonder, if you had the source to some big M$ programs, if you built them with ICC instead of Visual Studio, would they run noticeably faster... would be funny for M$ to not use their own toolchain to build their stuff
but they almost assuredly do use Visual Studio

Bob
@allquixotic Eh, things like branch prediction are always improving.

the only reason I've heard that ICC is insanely fast is that "Intel knows their processors better than anyone"
another way to look at that: maybe the hardware designers collude with the ICC developers and give them tips based on their experience with the actual hardware
would certainly provide an interesting perspective
gcc, llvm, etc are probably not developed with that level of insight

2:27 AM
@allquixotic: even if they don't collude, they have a smaller set of hardware to design for (they just optimise for X generations of new processors) and probably nearly perfect documentation

Move to comment superuser.com/a/753841/98855 . Can a Mod move this to a comment more elequently than my method of posting the comment myself with the users name?

Bob
@Psycogeek Better to flag it with a custom mod message. But it might be too long to be auto-commented...

4:57 AM
done.

@Bob He went 15 kills to 6 deaths.
Also dealt a hell of a lot more damage than anyone else.

what the fucking fuck Java
@allquixotic a new gripe: wtf is going on with protected in Java? stackoverflow.com/questions/215497/…

Cool stuff...

12:07 PM
@Boris_yo what is that? And where do suction cups work anyways ? The bathtub, and on a window, is about the only places left that are flat non-textured. I am not saying foam tape is better , just where did they ever intend for the suction cups to work?

WARNING: Facebook Accounts Are NOT Being Deactivated May 18
@Psycogeek Window glass
Car

ahh is it is a handfree BT device?

@Psycogeek I can dig a link again if you want...
Facebook have culled a lot of accounts the past 24 hours
and a lot of those have been marketers who have been
using scraping software for promoting or ads.

This also includes if you have used id's in the past and
I've seen others business and personal accounts closed.

The removed accounts are also going to be sued.

@Boris_yo In my state you cant stick anything to the front window anymore (driving safety) and the side windows go up and down. especially a drivers window which can have an automated full down action, for (things like) toll booth payments, and drive-through food.
I have tried sticking things to the drivers side window like the GPS mount (because they dont allow the front window) and it is nothing but a disaster. Close the door for example is a huge impact.
@Boris_yo According to some studies, they would have to remove 95% of the accounts on facebook if they are going to get rid of things like "like" scams, and paid flourishing of the place.
They are probably doing a token cleanup, to soothe complaints. Every fake like and ever fake friending and every fake account has only made the place Virtually rich. It is percieved way greater by and of advertising and promotion.

Our data center racks in New York unexpectedly lost connectivity. There was a failure in the UPS feeding our equipment that went undetected by our provider. Here is a timeline of major events so far: 06:43 UTC - The UPS feeding our racks in the New York data center stopped feeding utility power and failed to provider backup power 07:04 UTC - We learned the nature of the UPS issue and began fai

@Bob I don't see anything particularly strange about protected in Java

Bob
@allquixotic How about the fact that it's accessible by the entire package?

I almost never use protected except as a protected abstract method in an abstract class that I want other packages to implement, or a protected field that I want them to be able to access

Bob
Hey, I just need something accessible only by the subclasses. Oh wait.

@Bob so you need an access level that is basically private + subclasses and not package level?
seems like a fairly niche use case in any case

Bob
@allquixotic That's exactly what C# and C++ protected do

2:17 PM
What can I do if one doucheback drives his sports car without muffler and causes serious noise? Is there a law in USA regulating this?

2:37 PM
@Bob so in java it makes them not accessible by other packages then? if so, wouldn't that be the point?

We are currently only line and running operations from the New York data center again after the power outage earlier this morning. We are in a holding pattern since the UPS system serving both our primary and backup power feeds (yes, we’re very excited to learn this too) is still being worked on. At 11:59 UTC The decision was made to move operations back to New York and risk a few second

@CanadianLuke The complexity of that project is pretty amazing. I'm fascinated that someone would put that much work into a project which does that

It's over my head, probably why I don't get it

There's a demo here: 3rin.gs/tengwar
