@Bob whoa, awesome, you discovered a way to reliably have a say command without pinging anyone :D
@allquixotic >_>
what does that even mean? ;p
00:36
Hey uhm. Just a little question. Am I understanding this article well (Rationale section)? In short, the reason that even today the Windows registry is sometimes used over putting files in the AppData (or other) folder is mainly because it's more efficient to use ?
The Windows Registry is a hierarchical database that stores configuration settings and options on Microsoft Windows operating systems. It contains settings for low-level operating system components and for applications running on the platform that have opted to use the registry. The kernel, device drivers, services, SAM, user interface and third party applications can all make use of the registry. The registry also provides a means to access counters for profiling system performance. When first introduced with Windows 3.1, the Windows registry's primary purpose was to store configuration...
@Ariane It is probably more efficient, yes
Kay. I looked it up because suddenly it dawned upon me that basically everything could be kept in files in folder and be easier to manage by the user. But if that's a very easily accessible database then it makes sense.
@Ariane The topic is complex
Think information sharing between machines used by a single user
Registry settings might have an easier time carrying over between workstations
Hmmmm I'm not really following.
But don't bother. I'm way too tired to go deeper into this tonight.
Thanks for the explanation.
Yeah, I'm way too drunk to explain it actually :D
Good times
00:50
Heh. All good. Good evening.
@OliverSalzburg explaining things while drunk... when not?
@Braiam It's too much to type

I'm getting significantly better speeds with this btsync install
I have a theory, but I need to test it out

@Boris_yo my bad.i got only the link from @ThatBrazilianGuy from the favourite messages in the left side. It's still there.

apparently the download speed off btsync on a raspi might be affected by how many files you have on it >_>
so, I've been seeing 3x the speed on the rebuild, going to add my music again (big, lots of files) to see if it affects speed, and if it does, remove it from the sync pool for now
03:51
@Braiam huh?

@Jou how are comgateway's prices?
This thing costs at least $35 on shipito, and $45 for any decent speed/insurance:
3.35 lbs (1.52 kg)

fairly bulky though

Q: What does gate mean in the Multics operating system?

FatimeI read Multics operating system. In the segment discriptor word (book) there is one part for number of gates for the segment. What does gate mean? I know the process can enter a higher-privileged ring if the gates allow (use one of the valid segment gates as an entry point) but I don't know corre...

My wife/girlfriend/it's complicated just bought a windows phone (a Lumia 720). Despite being windows (and microsoft), it's surprisingly good for what I was expecting.
Despite some really annoying stuff, such as a massive lack of apps (well, most of the major ones are there, but for someone who has more apps than clothes -- no really -- it is not enough), the OS taking 2.3 GB of the 7 GB storage, an update taking 5 min to reboot the phone and then more 10 to update it...
But the screen is really good, and compared to my outdated Defy it's interface navigation is quite smooth
@ThatBrazilianGuy: nokia (and microsoft) have always made great hardware
She only got it because of the Carl Zeiss lens.
That, and she needs social networks to fill of hashtags. =P
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy The Lumia phones are pretty much universally smooth
my 520 is smoother than my SII
It was (comparing to other phones) quite cheap not costing a liver, I even considered buying one, but I'd miss (1) all my gigazillion apps (2) widgets (3) the Tegra android GPU I never had
Also, metro is weird.
09:45
@ThatBrazilianGuy I thought Tegra is system board...
@Boris_yo Ok, replace it by "any GPU that lets me play games that don't have "happy", "farm" and "cute" on their names. =P

Also, metro is weird.
If all the icons were like the contacts or photos, with actual content, it would be nicer. Lots of multicolored squares and flat shapes isn't.
10:02
@ThatBrazilianGuy I had worse with years 2000s phones so I would not complain.
10:15
@ThatBrazilianGuy Weird that you cant change that, when it looks like the most customisable aspect of it all. It'll be the great new feature of 9 :-)
10:31
Also, bing search. Can't change.
Also, IE browser. Can't change, no firefox and no chrome in appstore.
Also, I'm sorry for my gf having a geeky bf when buying a new tamagochi shiny toy precious smartphone.
At least now she has a totally updated, configured phone with all her beloved social apps (and free tech support!)

What am I missing with this service cloudhashing.com ? So they rent out cloud computing hardware for people to mine on. This would imply to me that whoever rents it earns more money than they spent, otherwise, why do it? So... why don't they just use their hardware to mine themselves?

@ThatBrazilianGuy why does that link crash mozilla ?

The existence of many different audio and video standards necessitates the definition of hardware interfaces, which define the physical characteristics of the connections between electrical equipment. This includes the types and numbers of wires required along with the strength and frequency of the signal. It also includes the physical design of the plugs and sockets. An interface may define a connector that is used only by that interface (e.g., DVI) or may define a connector that is also used by another interface; for example, RCA connectors are defined both by the composite video and co...
@allquixotic nonono, the question is how much time passed between HDD to be from 256MB to XTB's and the time that it took for SSD do the same
Bob
Bob
@Braiam well, that's not a fair comparison
when HDDs were in their infancy, larger sizes were not expected
there wasn't any software support for larger sizes, either
heck, I'm not even sure if the interface did
SSDs, on the other hand, are playing catch-up on capacity
Catching up is almost always faster than the original innovation.
SSDs are increasing in capacity faster than HDDs are, that much is certain
anyone seen any 8 TB HDDs out there? (if so, are they less than $2000 per unit?) how about 16? nope.
but SSDs keep coming down in price for any given capacity
13:21
the more big HDD I've seen is 4TB and SSD is already 1TB...
@allquixotic: HDDs are getting pretty close to their size wall
I hope to see HDD slowing down and SSD passing HDD's next years
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic OTOH, they've pretty much hit a wall
SSDs will continue to double until about 8nm or so
they're trying a few neat tricks to get more density tho
Bob
Bob
13:22
@allquixotic but reliability will go down with it
don't know what size they're using right now
Bob
Bob
which could cause issues
(same could be said for HDDs...)
@allquixotic: smaller process sizes mean less reliable SSDs
on the other hand
Bob
Bob
I've made it a point to avoid HDDs greater than 2TB - don't want to deal with GPT just now, and higher densities scare me
most people don't really need anything more than 120gb for a system drive ;p

also, SSDs aren't actually limited by physical size at the moment
you have enough room to shove more flash chips on most SSDs
but heat becomes an issue too
but that increases cost

Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek hm?
(2.5inch drive, with a giant heatsink making it 3.5inch)

@Ash that's because rs232 has nothing to do with video
and d-sub is just the shape
a "VGA" connector is a DE-15
The D-subminiature or D-sub is a common type of electrical connector. They are named for their characteristic D-shaped metal shield. When they were introduced, D-subs were among the smaller connectors used on computer systems. Description, nomenclature, and variants A D-sub contains two or more parallel rows of pins or sockets usually surrounded by a D-shaped metal shield that provides mechanical support, ensures correct orientation, and may screen against electromagnetic interference. The part containing pin contacts is called the male connector or plug, while that containing socket ...

"VGA" is analog
rs232 is digital
DVI is also digital, but it's high bandwidth
rs232 is very very low bandwidth
sending video over rs232 is stupid
you might get one frame every two seconds on a pitiful resolution
it was commonly used for output about two decades ago, but that was a text console, not video
Ash
Ash
"the 'proper' RS232 was a DB-24 plug." / " rs-232 is a protocol " . i don't think they are same.this make me o.O
the protocol has an electrical , signal and a physical interface specification to it
so the 9 pin Rs232 is a different physical interface from the 25 pin version (and there's 3.3V and 5V varients IIRC), but the signal is always the same
@Bob Wait, who wants to send video over RS232?
with VGA, you have 15 pins (though the same overall size as a serial port)
14:34
I remember using RS232 on 9600bps modems on dial up BBS's back on the early 90's (and it was obsolete even back then)
