aaaaaah DBAs
ever so popular, ever so quirky

Q: Can we get mullet.stackexchange.com aliased to dba.stackexchange.com?

ConcernedOfTunbridgeWellsIn line with @gbn's status as an unofficial dba.se mascot, would it be possible to get mullet.stackexchange.com aliased to dba.stackexchange.com?

mullet? seriously

xD

lol

heading home, back later

1:09 PM
cya

:D

who is Chris Nolan? O.o

Nolan knows how to mess with minds.
@Shiki <facepalm>

well I know Michael Bay, he is famous. Even people explode there.
But Chris Nolan?

1:17 PM
I am gonna kill ya @Shiki

Checked IMDB, well, he gets a 2/10 from me. +1 for Inception.

Hmmm. Scripting questions aren't off-topc for SU are they @Sathya? When does a scripting question cross the line into SO territory I wonder.

12
A: Preferred location for "shell scripting" questions

Jeff AtwoodIn these borderline cases when there are multiple sites that could host the question, it depends on the person asking. Would that person consider themselves a ... programmer? sysadmin? power user? You should tailor your question both to yourself, and the community.

A: Preferred location for "shell scripting" questions

GillesIf your question is about the scripting language itself, it belongs more on Stack Overflow. If your question is about automating a task, it belongs more on Super User, or on more specific sites such as Unix and Linux (for scripts running on unix and unix-like systems), Server Fault (for tasks rel...

ciao

And we don't have a site for scripts yet!

@Sathya Ahem. Perhaps I should search first!

1:20 PM
@Shiki See all his movies ....

@HackToHell - well, I'll check the latest movie. that shooting made it already famous.

It was famous b4 the shooting, you do not know where to look

^^"

this is going beyond control.

@Shiki I agree with the answer to the first one, a scripting site isn't needed, just asking in the context of the questioner and site is enough. A powershell scripting question came up on review with a vote to move it to SO. Didn't seem like a sensible thing.

lucky me, not using twitter too often: wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-07/23/twitter-psychopaths :-)

No, don't even look at me like that.

user32775
confluence is making me sick, not a single browser supporting all features...

i know right.

user32775
now i got ff10 to have at least support for a major subset, and I thought it would be better if we move away from sharepoint ;-)

Bob
1:40 PM
@Shiki Hmm.. Well, Eclipse does C/C++, doesn't it? Does NetBeans? Perhaps NetBeans is more Java-centric?

@Shiki Google likes Eclipse, Orace likes Netbeans

Bob
@AlexanderTruemper For basic rendering features, you should be fine as long as you stay away from IE ;)
Opera's good with that
For other general features, that's what extensions/plugins are for (at least in FF/Chrome) :P
@HackToHell o.O
I could just imagine all of Google's services being powered by Java
They have enough server farms :P

1:56 PM
@Bob - NetBeans can code C/C++ as well, those are just plugins.

user32775
@Bob the problem exists with the html5 features like inline image pasting and suchalike.

@Bob Why a o.0 ?
I do not like Eclipse and Google likes it, you can write and upload app engine code only from eclipse

Android is the same. The official SDK is only available for Eclipse.
I love Eclipse, but importing existing code is a hassle. In Netbeans it's a simple click.

Are there any tools to check RAID1 consistency for an external array in Windows? I've got missing data but WD's native utility says everything is fine.

Bob
@dnbrv Depends how the RAID is implemented

2:07 PM
@dnbrv you can ask that as a question in the main site
@Shiki yeah

@Bob What can be the difference?

Bob
First, is it software or hardware RAID? If it's hardware RAID, the controller manufacturer should provide the tools.
If it's software RAID, well, whoever provides the software - so I guess no difference.

@Bob It's hardware. It's a WD external RAID array (2-disk enclosure).

Bob
Then it's unlikely that third party tools exist
I don't personally know
But there's a good chance it's exposed to the OS as a single disk and WD uses some proprietary method to communicate with the enclosure :\
You could always check the file system, that may be corrupted...
@HackToHell I really have no idea about Java IDEs :P

@Bob Yup. It shows up as a single disk in OS. The basic tests pass fine. Waiting for the long one

2:27 PM
Has anyone seen a "KVM" that allows the sharing of a VGA monitor and a USB port (that will accept a hub containing mouse / keyboard and whatever else) between two computers?
All KVMs seem to expect a direct connect keyboard and mouse, no additional peripherals

@Paul it’s impossible

Bob
@Paul Expect?

@kinokijuf Because?

Bob
There's nothing preventing a hub connected to a hub

because keyboard and mouse signals are at a higher level than USB

Bob
2:30 PM
And a simple hub in a KVM is much more believable than anything more complicated (which would be required to even tell it's a HID)

@kinokijuf What do you mean by a higher level? Anything that runs over USB is at a "higher level"

for example, i have seen a keyboard
USB keyboard
with integrated hub

@Bob are you saying that it should just work?

and the keybord

Bob
I would think so.

2:31 PM
did not identify itself as a keyboard
bu as a hub, of course

Bob
There is no way for a USB hub to identify a HID

and when you enumerated the devices on that hub
then you got keyboard

@Bob that is what I was thinking but I'd expect it to be listed as a feature

that is also

Bob
It would have to act as a host, negotiate with the peripheral and then act as the peripheral with another host (your computer)

2:32 PM
why is it hard for bios makers
to get PS/2 emulation right

Bob
@kinokijuf In other words, it's a USB hub with a keyboard hard wired into it.

@Bob yes

Bob
There's nothing special about that.

@kinokijuf Anything that supports more than one peripheral over a single USB is a hub

@Paul not necessarily

Bob
2:33 PM
I could plug a $5 USB keyboard into a $5 USB hub and get the same result.

those keyboard/mouse combos are not
there are a single USB device
and multiple HID functions
and then there's USB composite devices, which are yet a different beast

@kinokijuf Yeah right. So the KVM could be behaving like a combo
No it can't

Bob
@Paul Only if it's also acting as a host for the external mouse/keyboard

Because it accepts usb devices
Hmmm

Bob
Which is a lot more complicated than a hub
Which is stupid.
Embedding a hub with a simple physical switch is cheap (and could be DIY, it's just four wires)

2:35 PM
So we are betting it is really just a hub
Which then implies I can plug whatever I like into it

so, the KVM would also need to accept other usb devices if it worked
and theres the other thing

@Paul hahah, no, just remembered this at the top of my mind

that you can’t boot a computer without a keyboard

@kinokijuf Errr. yes you can!

@Paul the bios doesn’t let you

2:37 PM
@kinokijuf There aren't many bioses that demand a keyboard or we would all get stuck when booting servers
2

Bob
@kinokijuf Uhm. Sure you can!

But in any case, both devices in question are laptops and so this isn't an issue

@Paul most servers I’ve seen were old P3 boxes without even a proper case

Bob
@kinokijuf You haven't seen a lot of servers.

@Bob where do you live?

Bob
2:39 PM
In fact, I cringe at something like that acting as a server in anything but a home environment.

@kinokijuf Yeah, take a look through your bios settings sometime, you'll find an option to disable failing without a keyboard

Bob
@Paul I don't think I've seen that option recently :P

@Bob Both are good, but I prefer Netbeans because of it's better project managing skills and better javadoc support
In the end, it's personal preference.

Bob
4 hours ago, by Bob
I don't like Java, Java doesn't like me :P

:P It's implemented in 3 billions devices
And andy runs java fyi

Bob
2:44 PM
Yea, sure.
Credit cards too.

And a space probe too

Bob
@HackToHell That explains why it crashes every time I try to play music! :P
Actually, I need to find out why some time. Bleh.

An nice facepalm by eminent figures
Nowhere related to @bob or java

Bob
lol

From this one

Bob
2:49 PM
@HackToHell Appropriate response.

yea, one of my class mates voted chrome, sent him a message with that image ;p

Bob
Well, there is a Chrome OS
So at least it's a somewhat valid answer :P

lol

It’s summer here at StackHQ. Have a flower!

You’re welcome. Now on to some serious work. Can we talk about cultural anthropology for a minute? I’d like to talk about what happens when a community (online or off) gets to be about… oh, three or four years old.

Every community starts out needing to recruit members, so they tend to be very friendly to newcomers.

After a few years, an insider group of old-timers forms. They get to know each other. They know the rules. They know the history and the legends of the community. And it’s only natural to get little bit irritated when newbies show up who don’t know the rules. …

don't read it literally.
kicking off is an idiomatic phrase.

ok ok pointing stuff out
I accept the Summer of Love concept, I persuaded one of my friend to post on SO and he did not read the faq(who does ;p), his question got a downvote and a bad comment, he deleted his account and gave me a look of disapproval the next day.

2:59 PM
should have read the faq.

Ask @Jeff to survey the newbies and ask them how many actually read the faq, do you read the boring Terms and Conditions when you create a account in a website ?

well no :p but i do try to figure things out if i am truly interested.

Bob
I usually at least skim the FAQ/rules/ToS of sites, I just usually forget most of it by the next day...

xD

And how many are interested or are like @Bob ?

Bob
3:03 PM
SU was probably the first (and only) place I put the effort into remembering the FAQ :P

like i said, if you care, you will read.

I still keep forgetting things and have to read the faq for figuring out if a question is out of topic or not ;p
2

Bob
@HackToHell I think that's normal :P

lol

Bob
> I can be emailed at hacktohell [@] boxbe.com (once in an month email forwarding, so better contact me via social networks)
wtf
why do you do that?!
And that's got to be a massive inbox flood every month :P

3:08 PM
I get a lot of junk ;p

Bob
Gmail?

Yahoo

Bob
It's pretty good at filtering out all the junk :P
I mean, try using Gmail*
I'm surprised you get a lot of junk, though. You seem quite careful with email obfuscation

I have 2 gmail accounts and a Live account, use Yahoo since I got an email address with the same name as my alias

Bob
ah

3:10 PM
I keep important stuff in my gmail account, yahoo is like a use and toss mail id
Newsletter, junk to yahoo, important stuff to gmail.

Bob
:P
Plus addressing is really helpful though
I don't think Yahoo/Hotmail/Live support it though :\
All mail sent to <username>+<anything>@gmail.com gets redirected to <username>@gmail.com
So it's easy to register with stuff like <username>+stackexchange@gmail.com and filter it

Yeah, it's awesome for creating fake fb accounts

Bob
lol
I'm surprised at the lack of spam in my current email account of five years

also <username>+<anything>@googlemail.com goes to your email id

Bob
My previous two got spammed to death - I'm still trying to figure out how I got on to the organ enlargement spam lists :\

3:15 PM
Same prob here with yahoo, boxbe does a somewhat good job
Wow, this is awesome

Bob
gah, spotify
and it's time I go for the night (morning)...
cya

cya @bob

superuser.com/questions/452953/dedicated-server-and-games I'm trying to understand why someone would do this ;p
@HackToHell: ah, the old +tag trick?

yeah

(sad fact. My classmate, who is an actual IT Professional, and actually seems rather good at it, was impressed by tags. He mainly noticed this cause of my IMPORTANT AS HELL! tag)

3:18 PM
lol xD

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It was bad enough before I got to the comment where he expected people to play through TeamViewer...
And now I'll actually go :P

Anyone have office 2013 here?

lol
yeah
I was bitching about it not handing CSV files intelligently ;p
superuser.com/a/452984/10165 I was ALMOST going to liken his computer upgrade plans to trying to get a granma in a zimmer frame in a 2 piece....

Q: Specify reason for flagging off topic

VBwhatnowWhen flagging a question as Off Topic I have to hope the the moderator reviewing the flag spots the same problem I do. I'd like to be able to specify a reason for a question being off topic. This way we can point to specific areas of the FAQ to clarify my reasoning for flagging off topic. Is the...

Anyone have issues with 2xGeForce 670's in SLI? It crashes the driver when I open any new program for the customer, and changing out the driver for older/newer/beta do no make a difference. The apps run fine after the crash

woohoo! Finally got 1K rep on SU

@Rob grats!
3 hours 'til our new mods get here!

I'm excited!

5:47 PM
@Mokubai Reminds me of the "too single issue" nomination on SO this year.

Hmmm, intriguing, hadn't seen that nomination, not got enough powers to vote over there...

Rob
I haven't been on SO since I stopped working with android. A little bit here and there, but otherwise it's been dead to me.

I hope that by the time the next election arrives, the majority of link only answers are gone. Given how the new review numbers are shrinking, it looks realistic...

Okay, how about making link only answers into comments and free cake for everyone?

@Mokubai It's a lie :(

Rob
5:52 PM
cake is my SSH server's MOTD at home. <3

@DanielBeck What, you were expecting real cake? I can see I'm going to have to step up my game and election promises...

Rob
Oh, I just remembered I had a great question for superuser, but I'll have to wait until I get home. Basically, setting default browser on arch isn't working for me. Chromium sets itself as default browser just fine, so I was able to change chromium.desktop to open firefox instead. But if I try to change it from chromium.desktop to anything else (firefox.desktop in the same directory, same file as chromium.desktop) it doesn't work. Arch-linux is finicky.

@DanielBeck Okay, how about I pledge to end hunger and world peace?

@Mokubai Your nomination will be closed as off topic.

@DanielBeck @Mokubai because we don't care about the human race, just that they ask their questions correctly on Super User :p

6:08 PM
@KronoS I don't care if it's your dog or your alien parasite who's posting, as long as it's not a link-only answer.

Q: android 4.0 chrome remote debugging shortcut

azraelI'm a web designer and I'm currently in the process of designing a mobile site, i know how to set it up in my command prompt to allow chrome and the adb to reach my phone for debugging the mobile site, my only problem is each time the phone gets disconnected (happens quite frequently due to bad u...

I would say it's marginally ontopic personally though it might fare better on Android Enthusiasts, I'd ask one of their mods if it would do well over there.
It's not Stack Overflow material, not really Android Enthusiasts, here only vaguely... it'scould be seen as more batch programming than android tbh...

@soandos I'd ask if Android would want it first

6:41 PM
@IvoFlipse You being evil^hawesome again?

@IvoFlipse, I assume you are doing that?

@soandos Every time I press delete

got it

But yes, link only answers should die and I'm tempted to expand that to short answers in general

7:01 PM
@IvoFlipse that is what's wrong with forums. The damn gif smileys.

Sue me :P

diamond fight!

Naah, just wait 50 minutes until Daniel becomes a mod
then we can 'fight' :P

lol

I can finally tell him to go bother the team himself, hehe

7:09 PM
Rebecca's gonna love him :D

Oooh, do you all have a proper get together? A Meet the Team, if you will?

@Mokubai Well as soon as they are elected, they are usually invited into the Teacher's Lounge (SE's mod-only chatroom)
Perhaps we should prep them to start by asking nasty questions :P

Rob
"spicy" questions

:( I have a meeting during the time that the election results are posted.

Rob
It'll be db, slhck, and oliver
:( sorry

7:17 PM
@Rob I wouldn't be so hasty to assume who'll win. I think it may be a close race.
@KronoS leave us your phone number, we'll text you the results :P

Rob
I used all three votes for

@nhinkle just tweet it to me ;)

Rob
romilnagrani

@KronoS ah, OK

Hmmm, apparently muy Firefox is screwed, doesn't play flash video very well... and flash keeps crashing tonight
Hmmm, okay, just too many tabs, apparently FF suffers with like 25+
What's up with that?

7:35 PM
When and how will the results of the election be published?

Assuming that I spent all my 24 vote to close casts today on questions, can I flag new questions instead of cast close on them even on 10k+ rep?

Anyone wanna try an SLI issue?

@Diogo I probably wouldn't
But that's just me :)

why?

@slhck 20 minutes and you have unlimited close votes anyway.
@Diogo There's a reason it's limited. Increasing the workload of moderators isn't the solution.

7:44 PM
@DanielBeck Well I hope you too :P

I dont think worload of moderators is the reason for the limit

@Diogo It's not, but it's the reason you shouldn't start flagging as a workaround.

Before new beta-revision system I didn't have this problem...

Ooooh low quality answer by @KronoS... haven't come across one by @slhck yet though.

Q: How should my flagging change when I gain the ability to vote to close?

DragonLordMy rep is going to reach 3,000 soon (2,987 at the time of this post), so I should be able to vote to close soon. How should my flagging habits change when I gain this ability? What should I do when I encounter a post that: is off topic and should be migrated to a site for which there is a mig...

7:47 PM
@Diogo Work with the low quality queue and just do the close queue just before you quit for the day (or you approach midnight UTC).

@DanielBeck I dont think this is a solution... anyway, thank you

@DanielBeck Not gonna happen I guess :) But I should check SEDE just to be sure

evenin' all

@Diogo It's the workaround that works for me... trying to process the low quality queue when you're out of close votes is pretty annoying...

Evening @DMA57361! Long time no see!

7:50 PM
@DMA57361 Hi
