12:05 AM
@studiohack: i'd hope not. I don't seem to recall anyone changing just the backlight before

@JourneymanGeek it's FIXED! :)
pinched wires it seems.

yay
HAH
i did warn you about the wires didn't i?

I pulled the wire between the monitor and the mobo, and they were threaded like they were supposed to, but once I pulled them out of the tracking, it worked, so I carefully put it back @JourneymanGeek - I don't recall you mentioning the pinched wires?

oh, i mentioned them being fragile more likely
I had them come off when i was fixing them

@JourneymanGeek well, you still deserve thanks for all the help and suggestions, you did mention the wires being fragile, i think... thanks :)

12:08 AM
@studiohack: honestly, monitor repair is slightly rocket science to me. laptop repair only less so ;p

@JourneymanGeek lol

@JourneymanGeek laptop repair is not entirely unlike brain surgery, though
I wonder if repairing a spacecraft would be called "rocket surgery"

hey @grawity - nice to see ya. I had issues after taking my laptop apart, and replacing the LCD backing, (hinge issues) and when reassembled, the LCD didn't have a backlight. pinched wires.

Hey @studiohack.

Anyone know an easy way to rip a DVD? I wanna keep a few on my PC here

12:15 AM
@SimonSheehan I hear Handbrake is good (never used any, though)

@SimonSheehan one sec - my way is almost failsafe. pretty easy. Handbrake I dislike personally

Oh? Interested now

@wil no. I refuse!

@nhinkle I refuse your refusal! It's only $3 and I couldn't pay straight away as my Paypal account had problems... but, it is all ok now... Please let me pay it!

If you can figure out my email address, you can do it. But you know the money would just go into my paypal account, to be used for some SU-related project later. Why don't you go buy yourself a $3 flash drive and blog about it instead :P

12:19 AM
@nhinkle $3 flash drive? I'll be lucky!

On the topic of blogging, guess where telnet 0200.0xae.64315 takes you

Should I paypal you an extra couple dollars for a larger one?

@grawity testing it

@grawity no where? :/

Connection failed for it

12:20 AM
@nhinkle lol... that isn't what I was implying!

@SimonSheehan this is what I use: lifehacker.com/355281/dvd-rip-automates-one+click-dvd-ripping - highly recommend - works well for me
@SimonSheehan it fails in FF. there's a blog post about it

@studiohack I used telnet :P

@grawity What is it meant to be?

@SimonSheehan lol, I don't know anything :P

@studiohack Thanks!

12:22 AM
@studiohack The IP address of miku.acm.uiuc.edu, only in an unusual notation

@SimonSheehan :) I have too many dvds on my machine. no where else to keep them ha.

@grawity that is unusual

Oh god its the Nyan cat telnet

Dunno what OSes that kind of stuff works on... Linux accepts it, Windows does sometimes

12:23 AM

@grawity I don't remember where I read it, but, I remember something about that notation for IPs... does it need to be in [] or something, or is that just for ipv6? :/
I am so far behind on this... :(

@WilliamHilsum [] is primarily for IPv6, to allow IPv6 addresses with colons where addr:port is expected... in URLs [] actually has an optional version field and can be used for "IPv6 or any future version", but no program supports the latter yet
(sigh, markdown)
@WilliamHilsum but this IPv4 thing is different, I've no idea which standard allows for hex and octal, or why someone thought it would be useful
damn

Trillian is a VERY cool chat client
Has skype chats support. Uses 1/3 the RAM :)

if I don't peel myself away from the laptop right now, I'm going to be stuck here until 6am, refreshing /questions or running pacman -Syu every five minutes

12:43 AM
hacking at stuff at night, until 6 am is actually easier than during the day... if only I didn't have to wake up at 6 am and spend half a day pretending to be listening to a lecture about conditionals in C++ or something like that
or about how using void main() [in C++] is better since "the return value is meaningless anyway"
headwall

1:16 AM
@grawity That teacher should get fired. :P
> [basic.start.main] 3.6.1.2 An implementation shall not predefine the main function. This function shall not be overloaded. It shall have a return type of type int, but otherwise its type is implementation-defined. All implementations shall allow both of the following definitions of main: int main () { / . . . / } and int main (int argc , char * argv []) { / . . . / } [and some irrelevant information...]
> [basic.start.main] 3.6.1.5 A return statement in main has the effect of leaving the main function (destroying any objects with automatic storage duration) and calling std::exit with the return value as the argument. If control reaches the end of main without encountering a return statement, the effect is that of executing return 0;
So while you are allowed to use a different type depending on the implementation (meaning it's not standard and doesn't work everywhere), it's not like it is completely meaningless... :)
And well; if you don't know where I quoted that from, a second reason for the teacher to get fired... ^^

1:55 AM
@grawity: thats how i feel listening to my computer forensics lecturer ;p

2 hours later…
3:30 AM
Anybody know how to get this: --> for %A in (*.lnk) do SOME.vbs "%1" <-- to do all the sub directories too

hey @iglvzx - how are ya?

@studiohack Hey. Pretty good, just being lazy. :P And yourself?

same thing actually - lazy day :P

Fun

it is. but it makes it harder to re-enter real life @iglvzx :P

3:35 AM
True. Procrastinating is hard to avoid
Halfway through my 3rd year in college. Already feeling 'senioritis'. lol

@iglvzx oh I feel you

Just installed a new video card.
First time I've ever installed one that needed a special plug from the power supply...
The power supply I had in there didn't have this plug, but I had another computer that did have it. So, I blindly took the supplies out, to switch, and realized they weren't the same size...
I managed to cut one of the cases open a bit so that the larger one fit inside the spot for the smaller one, and was about ready to close both cases up, when I found that the HD in one of them is along the side, but the power plugs weren't quite in the right shape to get it right...
Finally, after trying a whole bunch of things, I managed to get a solution that is working. Whew! Original estimate: 15 minutes. Actual: About 2 hours...
But, I have an awesome video card, if only I can get the driver... ETA: 1 hour.

@Pearsonartphoto when computer upgrades turn into Shop Projects.

LOL.
Actually, it wasn't that bad. I already had aluminum cutters, that I never actually had used to cut aluminum... And the cases are really thin, so...
I don't think I've ever actually replaced a power supply, so that was fun.

3:50 AM
the only hard part is when you have to add metal back :-)

Well, I probably should have, but right now I have a small hole in one of the systems...
And my power supply is only being held in by 2 screws...

thats what they make self tapping sheet metal screws for :-)

Might have to look into that...

I just found the 2 bits i was looking for. now if i could just find a real programer, they could make the winders 7 shortcutkey seeker program.

How is that supposed to work?

3:59 AM
unbelievable load of stupid junk i go through to do the most simple things. I just wanted to be a user
@Pearsonartphoto Slooowly i am trying to figure out how to find a shortKey assignment made in .LNK (shortcuts) , so a person can discover what holds up making another ShortKey . because they are global the system Smartly does not allow an overlap.

So when a person has a global hotkey that is F---up, there is nothing usefull that i can find out there to locate it, let alone remove or re-assign or anything.
i have gone through 400 pages of people with problems, just trying to find the answer, and the lack of even knowing how it works is , , , , and example of how stupidly complex the system has become.

Interesting.

Oh the viruses will find it :-) it doesnt matter if they put stuff 50 layers deep, they just make it hard for Me :-(

hey @Pearsonartphoto - nice to see you here :)

4:09 AM
I should hang out here more often...

I worked on computers back when they were Simple, a virus would just go in and say BOO and the whole system would collapse :-)
Now they have 40 hurdles to cross to get in, and 80 for the user to jump to get them back out again. the net gain seems fruitless.
wierd thing is , after searching for correct terms for it, i finnaly found some people who have worked with it before in XP, by using the search "where the hell are they" :-)

4:45 AM
I wonder how far the programmers can kick me out of thier chat room, if i ask them to make a "One Hour Program" :-) that means one day, and 4 days to debug.

1 hour later…
5:45 AM
@Pearsonartphoto: there's molex to that kind of power adaptor plugs

I found a program, that shows all the active hotkeys and the program/item they belong to. "windows Hotkey Explorer" it is not fully stable under win7 64, but i got to see, right before it locked up. It could be a possible solution to 2 SU questions asking about what program would show them.

Ummm. retagging doesnt require any administration? I just retagged a question and it didn't say that it'll be available after peer review(like it does while editing stuff).

6:03 AM
@Bibhas re-tag only requires a small ammount of rep.

@Bibhas you only need 500 rep to retag

Ohkay. Got it.

@SimonSheehan Got it. Thanks for the link. :)

No problem :)

6:52 AM
with Windows it is all about "location , location , location " C:\Users\Me2Know\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup Location, location, location . . . etc :-)

more like blah\blah\blah\blah with a back / ..
I wonder if Windows chose to use \ knowing that unix uses / .. or if it was just coincidence
sorry DOS.

I want to combine all the "all Users" menu junk with the "me only user" menu junk and reorganise the disaster. But i am skeered of touching it, it was so much simpler before. Now if I go to change it , i feel like i am burrying it in the back yard , or sprinkling its ashes over the lake.

@Bibhas: more likely that VMS used it

@JourneymanGeek And DOS borrowed that?

7:08 AM
naw
windows NT was pretty much designed by the same person who designed NT
a lot of internals are from there, same way the CLI is dos, and as such CPM influenced

Ah. ok

though, ya, in this case, more likely dos style paths
which are likely done, cause CPM did it that way

CPM?

CP/M (Control Program/Monitor) was a mass-market operating system created for Intel 8080/85 based microcomputers by Gary Kildall of Digital Research, Inc. Initially confined to single-tasking on 8-bit processors and no more than 64 kilobytes of memory, later versions of CP/M added multi-user variations, and were migrated to 16-bit processors. The combination of CP/M and S-100 bus computers patterned on the MITS Altair was an early "industry standard" for microcomputers, and this computer platform was widely used in business through the late 1970s and into the mid-1980s, expanding t...

Wow, learned a new word from that document, - backronymed

7:14 AM
lol
darned american portmanteaus
hm
i didn't realise dr dos was a CP/M decendant

7:51 AM
Well I finnaly got kicked out of programming back to Su where "they can answer it there " .

kicked out? What did you do?

kicked out "migrated" :-) They said to go ask on SU, because (of course) i am not a programmer.
If i had some Code to toss around that didnt work, but i dont, and i dont even know how to code.

8:04 AM
The problem is "how to find shortcut files with Global KEYshortcuts in them" i.stack.imgur.com/yBpc5.png This is the stuff i finnaly came up with after hours of research. there is a few bits in the .Lnk (shortcut) that change.
So, >For $A *.lnk HexSearch here 60 30 for 00 00 Else Spew out file name , repeat on whole folder. But they dont make a compiler that talks in psyco :-0

2 hours later…
10:04 AM
It's like nobody tests software anymore sigh...

@JourneymanGeek I know. Nobody ever did.

Searching on the web for workarounds and answers has change a lot. At first the net was more a geek place, now lots more people participate, so trying to find out how to "track threads of a process" comes up with needlework :-)

10:38 AM
@DanielBeck: why pay testers, when testers can pay you?

10:52 AM
@grawity cool, thanks

After i figure out how to do this , i wonder if i should put the 3 pages of what doesnt work and why, in the Q or the A .
I finnaly got the amasing Nircmd volume controls working, and the freaking hidden taskbar jumps up everytime I change the volume.

@JourneymanGeek True.

11:19 AM
Shifted the shortcuts to the desktop, same thing, the taskbar rises, i even ran it with runinv(invisable window runner) . Shifted the shorts to the 3rd party toobar, and the taskbar doesnt rise (yay), but with that program they dont work with the numlock on. *^%&($@^%(&^

@JourneymanGeek Hey did you check your pressure, mabey that is why it didnt . . . SHOOT, i hate when that happens.
gotta love it when they do things like that as a "Safety feature". It is like the worthless guard they put on my table saw, it was really safe not being able to see where the blade was, and to get the wood jammed up in the stupid guard. Before they called me 3 fingers , i removed it.
back to the good ol days toolmonger.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/post-tablesaw.jpg when stuff looked like it could rip your hand in 2, so the fear stays .
Helps to not clean up the blood from any darwin incidents too. bad examples are good examples.

11:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek Hm. I never noticed this as a design problem with mine, but you're right, it's an odd placement, and an odd feeling whenever you're checking the pressure.

cdn.twentytwowords.com/wp-content/uploads/… , what could possibly go wrong.

@DanielBeck: I got taught never to point a barrel at anything you did not intend to shoot
so that would, in theory, be a MASSIVE problem for anyone ever taught to use a firearm properly ;p

@JourneymanGeek Exactly. That's what I mean.

hmm
and the comments, make it clear why its designed like that ;p

But usually you take the thing air tank off the gun to refill it, and you can store them apart too.

11:46 AM
Uhm, not really. You can point the firearm upwards and still not aim at your head while reading the pressure gauge.

And since you want it filled before shooting, there's usually little reason to check for it on the range.

Yeah, it either works or it doesn't.

@DanielBeck a good time to check it is when you get a jam, hmm, hows the pressure

XD
@Psycogeek: unload before you check ;p
once again, its common sense
i'd like to see the reasoning behind this tho

@JourneymanGeek I herd u liek fire

11:54 AM
@JourneymanGeek When in whyoming at -20*f, the engine of the vehicles was still pumping out enough heat for a whole bus full of people. But not till it warms up, probably important to have an Auto/remote Start on his stove :-)

Think of how usefull that is for picking up women , who are wondering on the street at 20* below zero. Hey want to sit in front of the fireplace, in my car.

@DanielBeck: but a VERY natural thing for someone unfamiliar with air pistols such as myself to think ;p

@JourneymanGeek Would you write a product review based on that?

@DanielBeck: well. I try not to comment on things i nothing of. Note, when i did, i ended up looking stupid ;p

11:59 AM
it needs a bluetooth guage .
$1500 it should probably make phone calls too.

lol
Its probably precision engineered
AKA not made by the lowest bidder

i see the fitting triggerguard matches the rest of the design.

@Psycogeek ?

it not actually guarding the trigger.

@Psycogeek It's not exactly a gun meant for combat.
And AFAIK there are no competitions with these guns involving movement or very strict time requirements.
So a trigger guard to place the index finger should be sufficient...

12:07 PM
so it is like those $500 knives? I was camping with a group of people, and the guy shows me his amazing $500 knife that does everything. we needed some wood chips to start the fire, so he got out his $7 knife.

@Psycogeek It shoots air gun pellets. They're not even classified as ammunition.

I guess he was keeping the $500 knife for all those times he might be attacked by a vicious polar bear , that migrated because of global warming.

You can see it in the ragged borders of the holes in paper targets when your air pressure is low.
@Psycogeek This one? (hint: It's not actually meant to be used)

LOL i want that, does it have the 1 terrabyte flash drive too?

12:25 PM
@DanielBeck I finnaly got me a spell checker, It is a bit beloted, but a 4 Cd set. i.crackedcdn.com/phpimages/article/9/5/3/30953.jpg?v=1

12:50 PM
@Psycogeek I'd actually pay for this. I love that scene.

1:16 PM
Rofl...

@TomWijsman "Mathmetical"?
How about "Methmedical"?

I guess one of my Dutch friends made that... :(

1:47 PM
Hey, whats the total number of users in SU?

roughly 36x1914, give or take a thousand ;p

where did that 36 and 1914 come from? o_O

i see roughly 36 users a page, 1914 pages

haha. right

the last page only has ten
but thats covered by the rather large margin of error ;p

1:56 PM
lol

(granted the large margin of error was cause of anonymous users)

There's a long tail of very low rep users though.
The leagues track 3671 users with 200+ reputation.

actually, I suddenly wondered if the total number of questions was anywhere near the total users..

2:12 PM
@Bibhas What do you mean? 1 question per user?

not exactly. Just wanted to compare.

No need to wonder, just send a query.

Naaaice!

SELECT COUNT(Id) FROM Posts WHERE PostTypeId = 1 = 109900 questions.
SELECT COUNT(id) FROM Users WHERE Reputation >= 10, or any other requirement for what you consider an active user
The data is a few days old, so the numbers are a bit off, but should usually be within .x% of reality.

And about 68,000 fly by night users.

2:16 PM
Noticed one thing. the title value of the 'Compose Query' button is item.title ..
thats a bit odd
something's missing there

@Bibhas Head over to Meta Stack Overflow and file a bug.

Will do that
Done.

Q: Odd title value for Compose Query button at Data Explorer

BibhasJust visited the Data Explorer for the first time and noticed that the 'Compose Query' button on top right has an odd title value - <a class="youarehere" href="/superuser/query/new" title="item.title">Compose Query</a> It might be intentional but it seemed a bit strange to me that...

There are about 46000 users who haven't contributed to SU in any way.
(by reputation)
Out of almost 85300.

they are all on the forums, where they can speak without having a whole lot to say.

So, almost half the people on the site do contribute something....

2:34 PM
@Mokubai Probably all do, as SE Inc. can sell that many more eyeballs
But content-wise, yeah.
Still, 46k users that didn't manage to get a single upvote, or accept a single answer...
(I counted both 1 and 101 rep for this number, 101 mostly being other SE network users with bonus but no independent contributions)

well
gotta start somewhere ;p

@DanielBeck So approximately half, heh
Hey OS X people, maybe you know something about this:

Q: Open mac hard drive on windows pc

TheodorI recently accidently killed my 2007 Macbook by water damage, and I'm not sure what format the disc is formated in. I see the drive in disc utility, but all the options when right clicking are grayed out, see screenshot (its in Swedish, but it illustrates my problem). Im really keen to rescue m...

2:52 PM
@SimonSheehan: that pretty much covers the options i can think of. That said, my DAW comes with a cut down version of macdrive so... i haven't tried other options
also, linux opens anything ;p

@SimonSheehan Yeah, that situation is totally horrible.
I'm sure glad I have two Macs, just in case.

@DanielBeck Haha, yep

2 hours later…
5:19 PM
We just passed 111,111 questions. :)

@TomWijsman We did that yesterday. I even posted a screeny here. Some questions were deleted and so it crossed that number again today. :)
yesterday, by Bibhas
user image

Time to party.

@SimonSheehan lol
did that lifehacker method of ripping dvds work for ya?

It did actually, thanks :)

oh. that. it was a dupe post and looked like spam @TomWijsman

Hmm, I triggered the system and thus a flag? :/

@TomWijsman whoa, stupid me. I didn't even look at the user - undeleted. you're a trusted user, I trust you. :)
@TomWijsman yeah, a community flag :( I apologize.

@studiohack: Edited out the "I think".
It's indeed a duplicate as there are two questions on this, though they are about a different topic related to proxy.

perhaps you could expand the answer a little? one reason I deleted it was because it was a bit short for an answer...

5:39 PM
Yeah, I dunno what else to say. I don't have Proxycap myself neither the other program.

@TomWijsman I don't mind dupe posts (read, answers) as long as their not spam or they apply to the question
@TomWijsman okay. no worries.

I've seen them been used at a LAN party though...

sounds interesting?

I'm talkative. Nice.. :)

Well, I noticed you deleted it because I was refreshing the /questions page and suddenly the answer count was 0. :D

5:41 PM
@TomWijsman lol
@Bibhas oh, got your chat badge? :P

Well, allows you to use any program if you have a proxy.

@studiohack Yep. #LittleJoy :P

We're kinda locked out on internet. Read: We used a extremely long internet cable to get internet at where we are, an alternative could be a wireless sattelite.

@Bibhas haha

Two years ago rats ate through the cable right after the LAN party finished... :D

5:43 PM
wow, can't believe valentine's day is almost here again. ugh, I hate that day
@TomWijsman ironic :P

@TomWijsman Rats also want bandwidth. Nice.

@Bibhas them little hackers :P

We were surprised that it was still working. :/
Next year we hid the cable under sand and other stuff... :)

Just out of curiousity... There isn't a SE site for law, is there?

nope @Luke.

5:46 PM
I think no.
many people are posting questions on law and getting closed
It is a proposal at Meta I think
27
Laws & Legal Questions

Proposed Q&A site for lawyers and non-lawyers who have questions about different legal issues. Lawyers from different countries talking to each other (due to the large amount of international legal issues).

Currently in commitment.

@Bibhas Not Meta - rather, Area51

@Bibhas Thanks

@studiohack Yeah. just noticed.

Committed... Now I wait...

@Bibhas I don't think this'll work.

5:50 PM
@DanielBeck What wont?

@Bibhas Law.SE
Or Legal.SE or whatever.

@DanielBeck Oh. Why not?

media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lxjofnoNYs1qctkcl.jpg <-- What my ex is trying to do, plus take my son

Far too many relevant countries. They want an international law/legal questions site.

@DanielBeck Ahhh, that wouldn't work well then...

5:52 PM
Imagine each and every one of the topics duplicated 30 times, once per country.

@DanielBeck Yeah, thats true.

It will be a mess
One of the examples:
In Florida under foreclosure law, does a bank/debtor have to go before a judge/court in order to get a foreclosure?
That's 50 separate questions for the US alone, or one massive CW topic

That.... Makes sense....

I mean some users are already annoyed when Mac users ask questions that have the same answers as the Linux counterparts. I know, I'm one of them ;)
Now imagine that times 10 (countries instead of OSes)
And a far smaller community

Hmm 13% in one year. Makes sense.

6:01 PM
:-/

2 hours later…
7:37 PM
I've had my laptop for 20 months now. Today I set the DVD drive's region for the first time. Why was this "feature" introduced, again?

@DanielBeck Something to do with language localization and restrictions on the way it's played. Or something like that
I bet @slhck might know.

There, Ebay just ate my 12 bucks. Money gone and Ebay says the transaction was unsuccessful. Sigh.

And consider the part where this is my first transaction with ebay. First impression.

Possibly last impression :P
I like Amazon.

7:46 PM
Being in India, Flipkart has the edge here.

8:11 PM
@SimonSheehan Yeah, because they don't want people in the EU and US to be able to play e.g. region 5 DVDs (which are dirt cheap). That was more rhetorical, as I just don't buy or play any DVDs because it's always a pretty bad experience.

:) I know, I'm evil, aren't I
It was my background for a while too

Product that are sold with no fun, will be pirated. Period.
The image says it all
It seems the next SE site is gonna be Academia.
anyone running ubuntu here?

8:27 PM
@Bibhas Hell no
:-)

@Bibhas @JourneymanGeek "Why is the DOS path character "\"?" Basically, at the time DOS got directories (I think at v2 or so), the / was already in use as the option character (may have been inherited from VMS or TOPS-10... not from CP/M, though). Several versions actually had a setting to switch pathsep to / and optchar to -. Windows now accepts both ` and /`.

@DanielBeck lol why? :P

@Bibhas Check the sidebar links to yesterday's whining. That was a horrible experience...

Oh, those 11.10 pics?

@Bibhas Was a bit more than that, if you scroll up the chat log
But essentially, yes.
Except the first "11.10 pic" is Mac OS X...

8:31 PM
Got it, I just want this guy to post the content of his Grub config and I dont remember what is the equivalent of /etc/grub.conf in ubuntu. :|

Wonder why this was approved superuser.com/posts/48950/revisions

@SimonSheehan: Nothing wrong with adding information.
Or did I miss something? :(

@TomWijsman But you removed it?

@SimonSheehan: As I moved it to a community answer.

@TomWijsman Ahh okay, that's what I meant should have been done :)
