hmm? superuser.com/questions/337373/… we might have people from microsoft hanging around ;p
gah, the free version of SIW vanished, pcwizard crashed on the latest system i tried it on...
lucky i know a half dozen system info tools

@JourneymanGeek If Microsoft are starting to pay people to answer questions on SU.... I WANT THAT JOB!

lol
@WilliamHilsum: prolly part of their general support/social networking team
I wouldn't say no to getting paid to answer on SU, as long as i could answer linux questions on a personal capacity too ;p

4:54 AM
blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/22/… damn it MS, you're actually making it hard for people to go into an ininformed panic

5:11 AM
grub2 does not show up any reason why ?
I am having ubuntu 11.04
it obviously runs but my monitor just flashes and I have to memorize the boot order and press keys accordingly to get into windows , ubuntu

@JourneymanGeek hehe... I wish I wasn't so busy... since I read the first UEFI bashing on Slashdot, I have been meaning to write a blog post -
It is the same thing every time - with Vista, people were complaining non stop (before it was released) over DRM and security... it wasn't an issue in the slightest to anyone, and now they have found something new to complain about... IMHO, it is unfounded and BS.
... but as you (jokingly) said, I am happy MS is going on the defensive and actually explaining this time.

@HackToHell: change GRUB_TIMEOUT

@JourneymanGeek what is that and how do i do that ?

@WilliamHilsum: its not the bitching, and conspiracy theories. Its the fact that MS has a nice coherent reply to that

@WilliamHilsum update to blogger draft , it has an nice interface
@JourneymanGeek nvr mind found out how

@JourneymanGeek thanks

1 hour later…
6:44 AM
Someone just mass downvoted my "alternate" SO account... annoying as hell as I can't vote now :(
I really wish downvoting was done differently

@WilliamHilsum well, give it some time & it'll be back up

@Sathya but what the hell goes through people's minds as they do it! I think I know who it was and I want to do it back... I won't though

@WilliamHilsum same sentinments here..
in Casual chat on Stack Overflow Chat, 31 mins ago, by suri sahani
@Sathya I think there is some down-voting going with my rep. Some people are sick out of me.

Thanks for the link... Cool... well, it was only a few questions (all I have on that account)... just annoying as I was going to upvote an answer and can't!

@WilliamHilsum link me to your other account

6:54 AM
stackoverflow.com/users/902107/wil - not really a secret... (I lost the password in my keypass to the last account I had)... One day I wouldn't mind getting a job as a developer and I don't want embarrassing questions on my main account!

@WilliamHilsum hehe

7:10 AM
morning all

morning @DMA

back to Uni today, hurrah
might find out what my independent module is going to consist of...

argh, knackered my hand playing table football. bloody interns

:/

so assuming we did breach the speed of light, does that mean we can start deleting spam before it gets posted?
2

7:17 AM
:D
that's a mod power I'd quite enjoy pressing the button on

might need to get Jeff to sort the DB out though, would be quite complicated upvoting answers posted before the question was even submitted
you'd have to use McFly tables

@Gareth :/ that joke/reference is lost on me... maybe it's too early in the morning

no, it's just a lame joke, a Friday, and I'm knackered
McFly, as in Marty McFly, as in Back to the Future

ah, that makes sense, I just wasn't awake enough to think about it :P

must be a tea malfunction. brb, more tea

7:20 AM
lol

sigh, no milk

O_o disasterous
although usually in that sort of situation I fall back to Earl Grey

lol @McFly tables

145 rep yesterday on M.SO shakes head. Blasted past 1,337 rep as well.

7:45 AM
right, best wander over to my first class, cya all later

see you!

2 hours later…
9:35 AM
headesks
superuser.com/users/98894/johannes what he says and what he needs seem to be two different things

2
A: Encouraging users to create an account (and keep it)

Jeff Atwood I know SO's policy is "you don't have to register to ask questions," I have decided this policy no longer makes sense, given a question volume of 4k-5k questions per day. So from this point on, registration is required to ask questions (but not to answer).

9:47 AM
lol. that's the most creative use of the letter இ i have ever seen
also. how does a comp sci student not know how to install an OS >_>

:p

10:51 AM
and i just turned on the light with a broomstick....
(dog was sleeping with his head on my chair.. couldn't reach the light without waking him)

11:08 AM
Journeyman Geek has been automatically appointed as owner of this room. (What does this mean?)

o.O

o congrats :P @JourneymanGeek

o0
POWER!
also, what it really means is i spend too much time here ;p

11:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek :P

12:07 PM
stretch I'm back for now
@Sathya O_o whoa
Well, this certainly paints a cheerful picture of the Greek economic crisis...

12:45 PM
hey there
can I invite a user to chat somehow?

@slhck are they already a chat user?

@DMA57361 Don't think so

then effectively no
you can give them a room URL and ask them to come join you, that's about it
follow the trail to SO then SU and you should see that's the same person

ah, that works!
thank you!

no prob

12:48 PM
you could probably delete that non-answer there too
ah, nvm done already

@slhck it is deleted
:)

1:41 PM
hmm
anyone have experience with razor keyboards?
I'm vaguely tempted to get a blackwidow - i can get it locally(which makes it easier for me) , its mechanical and it seems decent. actual people viewpoints would be nice ;p

@JourneymanGeek Nope, never touched one.
aah, I can't decide on a Linux distribution to pick

2:01 PM
@slhck Written of Ubuntu, or want to go for something a little less "mainstream"?

@tombull89 After seeing their latest developments, I'd rather not use Ubuntu anymore
I thought about going back to Debian or even trying the Mint Debian edition
… or possibly giving Fedora another shot

@slhck you mean the whole inteface change? Yeah, that's...annoyed me.
Then again I only use it on occasion for data recovery and such, so I'm not too fussed.

2:20 PM
Yeah, I'll probably just need a development environment

@slhck: how much time do you have? ;p
gentoo is lovely once you have set it up

@JourneymanGeek Well I've been warned :P

also, you have to go gnome or don't mind other desktop environments?

I would love to stick to Gnome

2:27 PM
Apart from that, I'm open to suggestions... probably try those on a thumb drive
btw do you happen to know how to configure vhosts?

ya, KDE user so i may not have as many good suggestions...
sort of
mine works, but i don't know how ;p

haha

Its one of those 'hack it till it works, and just move the ****ing config whenever you need to, and adjust it' things

am I supposed to symlink the sites-enabled stuff to sites-available?

ya, unless you run a debian based distro

2:30 PM
hmm, it is debian I guess

in which case, you need to run a2ensite to enable it (which does the same thing)

command not found,.... huh

oh well I did it manually. Now I somehow have to change .htaccess to make the site worka gain
I hate this stuff

2:57 PM
o0

3:11 PM
well I get a 403 access denied @JourneymanGeek

3 hours later…
5:46 PM
Do I have ADD or is this just vaguely unreadable? superuser.com/questions/339003/…
I get about 10 words into each "paragraph" then I hear a "ding" noise in my head and I've forgotten whatever point he was trying to make... it might well just be my brain failing...
A long day it hath been.

6:12 PM
@Mokubai I didn't make sense of it either

6:32 PM
ohnoes, is GMail down?

@slhck it appears so

@KronoS Meh. Hope my draft is still saved with them.
stupid web-based email :P

according to this it's not
but I'm not getting in right now

would be a weird coincidence

twitter isn't saying anything.. so must be brand new or coincidencial for just us
oh looks up now

6:38 PM
I get a 503 temporary error :/

i get an error cuz I clicked 'compatibility mode' on ie 9
stupid college computers

ooh. what does that do?
enable IE6 like rendering? :P

7:08 PM
@slhck both shot at same question:
0
Q: Where is the solver in Microsoft Excel 2007 located?

TimI am looking for solver in Microsoft Excel 2007 but cannot find it in Excel. I wonder how I can find it?

@KronoS well, 'twas too easy, was it? :P

yes sir
you got the graphic in there though... that makes ur's better IMO
;)

haha

oh and now you've added a screen shot! Well I have office 2010 so it's slightly different :)

oh it's not mine, I don't even have Windows here :P

7:14 PM
LOL!

What's the main difference between 2010 and 2007?
Only used 2007 before.

Google images is great for getting you nice home-made screenshots... a good few of mine are from them rather than my machine...

the ribbon button changed to the file button

@Mokubai Exactly!
@KronoS wow :D

there's actually more, but that's the major difference TBH

7:17 PM
looks a bit nicer

ya it is, but functionality it's basically the same. I like 2010 more solely due to aesthetics

@KronoS Looks like they're backpeddling to how Office was before the ribbon... looks a bit, well, sucky...
I quite like the ribbon in 2K7

@Mokubai they did go back to the "File" look, but it's better than 2003 IMO
I didn't like the ribbon though

"Hey we heard you like ribbons so we put ribbons and toolbars in your ribbons"

haha

7:21 PM
The ribbon made a nice change, now it looks like they're going back to the days of a thousand toolbars
@KronoS Still, anything was better than the fiasco that was the fight to get Office2k3 to stop hiding the damn useful buttons...

@Mokubai agreed.... and office 2010 you can hide the buttons fairly simple, but they're organized in a better fashion to find. and it's still a 'ribbon' I just didn't like the ribbon button. Don't know why exactly, but hated it. Looked ugly I guess

I must be too used to it, you mean the giant "office" button?

ya

Yeah, it's a bit out of place, but I'm used to it now.

I also got office 2010 beta and then was hooked
didn't really want to go back to 2007, and had the oportunity to get it for $10 so I took it

7:30 PM
I like the little "quick links" button just beside it, it's nice that it's that easy to put your most used functions (such as quick print) right on the main UI
@KronoS $10?!?!? want

employee discount... sorry :(

The other half knows I want M$ Office, Open/LibreOffice and pretty much all other free suites seem to suck more than a little bit

yeah, OpenOffice is really the worst

ya nothing really compares to office
it just costs so dang much
and they can do it, cuz they know it's the best

I did see a "family" pack for like £70 which isn't too bad, just not got £70 casually spare at the moment.
for now GDocs/notepad/web formatting suffices for home, and at work I have the full suite...

7:33 PM
if you can get a student license that's nice
unless you have to """return it after a year"""

(o_O) what? why?

(however that's supposed to work)
Yeah, we sometimes have those student deals where it says that you have to "return the license" after the semester is over
So, I don't know, you should delete Office?

Bwuh?
Then why even bother?

I know, don't ask :P

ya that doesn't make sense

7:35 PM
One semester is silly

but whatev... if you really wanted to be sneaky you could just lookup the licenses installed on a school computer and use that one

A year, fine. You can use it for a while... but one semester?

Well it doesn't expire, so you can use it forever :P
The worst thing was installing MATLAB with my student license
You first have to bring them a copy of your IDs, then fill out a two-page form, then pay for it, then get your CDs, then register with Mathworks online, contact the license server, enter your student data, wait forever, et cetera.
And of course, you have to renew it every year

wow that is terrible
ours is easy
register with matlab and they give you a license to enter

That sounds easy!

7:42 PM
that's it, then I can download the whole thing. We get most of the modules too. A rep came to the school and said that we actually get the most from matlab than any school (at least to students themselves)... he said that only employees had a better package

Wow. I just had to search for a license that included the Image Processing toolkit because they didn't install it on our lab computers.
And even that one wouldn't work out of the box because it already had been installed five times :P

8:07 PM
Heh... I'm having soooo much trouble reading this:
1
A: Anonymous editors in edit queue would produce more objective decisions

gnat Without reject reasons a large string of rejects will probably destroy their enthusiasm for editing I suspect Well, as one of the guys who receives rejected edits :) I would want to make it perfectly clear that these not necessarily destroy enthusiasm... In my case this is definitely not so...

Why would you use code blocks for emphasizing? O_o

Wow, I find it bizarre in researching triple monitors that ATI can support three monitors on one card while Nvidia seemingly can't... how odd.

@Mokubai Yes, I've read that too
which seems really weird

I am mightily perplexed as to why AMD/ATi can do it while Nvidia cannot.
Maybe Nvidia are going for the "get them to buy another card and grab their money" approach

heh

It’s been a little over a year since our last improvement to the bounty system. Question bounties have been working well enough that we’re comfortable encouraging even more use of the bounty system.

We used to limit people to one question bounty at a time, but now you can have up to three simultaneous question bounties. We also show the history and number of bounties you’ve started or participated in on your user page, on the bounties tab.

Upon further reflection, we realized that it can be difficult to tell exactly what a question bounty is for. That is, what is the bounty own …

8:44 PM
Sadly Daniel is right, though I didn't even need Wikipedia for the answer, took me less than 30 seconds to find the answer on SU and I didn't even need to search for it...

Q: Does Adobe Photoshop use the GPU?

pinouchonDo Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Premiere CS5 use the GPU? Does the choice of the graphic card change the performance of these programs?

The answer is exactly two clicks away from the question

@Mokubai Yeah. If I'm honest, I'd even make downvotes on questions also count -5.
Duh. Trying to install Google Chrome on Fedora.
Go to google.com/chrome, select "32 Bit RPM", and it takes you to the Mac OS X download page.
>_>

What? They're the same aren't they? ;)
Like Fedora totally ripped off MacOS

Haha, yeah, sure!
Searching for a Linux distribution is driving me mad. I just started using Fedora and it's annoying right from the beginning.
And I don't ever want to see Ubuntu's Unity again.

If you want customisation (and a lot of learning) I kinda like Gentoo, but it's a lot of work....
I got bored and decided I actually wanted to use my computer instead and got Win7...
2

Yeah, @JourneymanGeek already told me to look into it. I just want a basic well-known Linux... maybe I'll look into Mint or Debian next.

8:52 PM
Arch is apparently a bit like Gentoo, but without so long building from sauce....

Haha. Well the thing is that I need it for actual programming :P

If I really needed Linux I'd probably go for Arch personally, I like customisation and their guides look good
Apparently they're a "rolling release" distro, so much less pain to upgrade from one release to the next

Oh, that sounds nice.

Arch even have a nice comparison against other distros...wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/…

@Mokubai Looks really good. I'll test install it.

9:04 PM
I had a quick glance at Unity though, while it looks a bit restrictive for power users I could see it being reasonable for new users. What didn't you like about it?

I couldn't find anything. I was completely lost there.
And I don't like their "we do our own thing" way :P

I had noticed a bit of "my way or the high way" mentality with Ubuntu...
Though with Linux its simplicity was vaguely refreshing after Gentoo.

hmm something failed now during that installation, let's try it again
Oh, I do have to spend some time with this installation it seems!

9:23 PM
Oh yes?

well, the whole configuration steps

Ah yes, that'd be the thing, you need to know what exactly you want in your system, KDE, Gnome, xfce or what have you... then what other bits you need

yup. and now I'm in vim and on the wrong keyboard layout!

Urk. Hate computers for that sort of thing... I'm in the UK dagnabit, I want a UK keyboard!
Too many different keyboard layouts

loadkeys or setxkbmap :)

9:33 PM
Though, I did try setting up an Arch VM purely for a LAMP server, took all of about 2 hours using their guides, had no bloat and needed only 64Mb of RAM.
Would have been a shorter time if my internet was faster...

that sounds great
well I'm done with that for today, going to try it tomorrow

it was pure console only stuff as all I wanted it for was to host php webpages, but it was sleek
Keep forgetting it's Friday today, no work tomorrow! :)

yay! still too much to do over the weekend :/
probably gonna go to bed, so have a nice evening and thanks a lot for the tips @Mokubai!

@slhck No worries, have fun! :)
Goodnight
