@surfasb: eh, lovesh asked that earlier. I'm half tempted to give him a lmgtfy link
lmgtfy?
no speak LOLCAT.
(since its more amusing. and meta)
00:33
Ah, ok.
I just had no idea what to google for.
I was thinking. Humm, what to call it. An enum outside? An hanging enum?
Maybe it is an orphaned enum. . .
or an enum without a cause?
has no idea what exactly is being enumerated'
Oh I thought you were referring to my SO question.
naw, was referring to lowesh's question. he's asked twice, and in that time he could have memorised, and recited (backwards!) the relevant wikipedia articles...
or.. bought a book
00:48

Ask some Windows users why they aren’t using Linux and chances are you will hear “because [program] doesn’t have a Linux version.” Although cross-platform software is popping up all over the place, there are still a number of applications that are restricted to a single platform – and for a lot of software, that platform is Microsoft Windows.

However, all is not lost. Although Linux has its own executable format and set of system libraries, a tool exists that will allows us to run a good portion of our Windows applications directly in Linux. This tool is of course, …

howdy
I can imagine the Super User question now
"I accidentally clicked Reset instead of Refresh. How can I undo? :("
07:17
morning all
07:56
lol
@Gareth: its nice for people who do periodic reinstalls tho
speaking of stupid things, i just uploaded an unfinished, un-spellchecked assignment to turnitin...
@JourneymanGeek :/
there opportunity to replace it?
08:13
morning
08:36
morning all!
@Sathya @DMA57361 Can't we blacklist these computersight.com people?
@slhck bring it up on meta..
Jeff doesn't prefer to blacklist because they're generally hit & run URLs
Oh I see.
This (on M.SF) will probably be declined then?
11
Q: Can we add "rapidssl" to the list of banned words please?

Chopper3I'm sick of deleting the spam we get from their millions of 'resellers'.

well, we're raised request for blacklists for several things, several of them have been shot down, rest accepted. If there's a trend, Jeff will accept it and add to the blacklist. However, he is significantly against adding to blacklist.
08:54
mmmmm, French Fancy, tasty :9
@DMA57361: will have to ask the lecturer today - we're supposed to submit the turnitin report with a physical copy ;p
fair enough
Its about 1% similar, since i'm a paraphrasing NINJA
that's OK then, presumably?
lol. up to 20% is usually fine
the thing is tho, this is a management module, and i don't write with a managery style. I write VERY plain english
09:08
f/e, we don't get no magically trickery here
the lecturers presumably just web search for a few choice sentences and see if anything obvious pops up ;P
eh, i am not a fan of plagerism detection. Especially when they spent hours telling us doing is is bad, and almost none on the use of library resources
yeah it's a very stick-oriented approach here too
eh the other two schools i went to were the other way around
hours on how to use the library properly
and maybe a quick session on citing
nice
we, uhh, got told where the library is...
oh, we don't have our own library
but yanno, the online resources... no idea where they arre
i use google books + scholar and cheat a little when it comes to needing to cite

ah, can someone revoke the close votes here? the question talks about videos, not a screenshot – http://superuser.com/questions/337304/capture-part-of-the-screen-in-osx-lion
@slhck simple answer is "no one". Close votes just have to be left to expire.
or do you mean it's a dupe of something different?
@DMA57361 I meant by closing it and reopening it
It's probably not a duplicate
that's a rather ugly hack thou, tbh
I know :/
It's just that the question was a bit unclear whether it was about image screenshots or real video screen captures (and the user answering wasn't too sure either)
remove the "possible dupe" comment and/or add something saying you've changed your mind
09:29
fair enough, will do!
10:14
my VoIP phone has so many buttons and such a complex menu structure I need a manual to understand it :\
sounds... fun :/
@Sathya haha, same as mine. We've got Cisco 7911's for handsets which is probably how many settings the thing has.
we have those Nortel/Avaya thingies
sheesh
my previous Nortel was a little bit better
10:37
Gah. Who actually invented JavaScript? I want them to burn in hell!

did clippy offer to help?
Nope. I'm not even sure I want Clippy to help :P
lol
but clippy wants to help everyone
Just like the stupid dog in Windows search!
I've never found anything with Windows search.
oh god. I love dogs, and i want to feed him to the ducks ;p
10:40
lol
i HAVE managed to use windows search effectively tho
the XP search was OK, the Windows Vista/7 one is next to useless though.
I use Everything now.
ahh, this was on XP
i don't search. all my files are neatly organised into two folders... "stuff i need now" and "other stuff"
haha.. let me guess which one has a very high flow-in rate :P
lol
generally the former is 2-3 folders
the latter... i think i'm a little scared to sort through it
10:43
I like to keep everything I need to do on my desktop. Which is nice. Until the point where I create folders named "Todo" and "Todo 2" and shove everything in there.
i don't ever see my desktop ;p
Me neither, THAT'S THE POINT :D
;p
i have everything in dropbox tho
Yeah, really useful for that stuff.
my media folder tho... yectch...
the music is nice and orderly. the videos are an utter and complete mess
10:47
All my documents are very ocd-based, especially music.
On my laptop I have a main partition and a secondary "data" partition for VirtualBox VM's and a "dumping ground" for files before I sort them.
yeah, they SHOULD be like that
i also blame my tendancy to download TV shows and watch em weeks later
It never hurts to be simplistically literal-minded? superuser.com/questions/337307/… - I was sure I was going to be downvoted for being flippant, not-Excel, not-Windows or because pipelines are programming. Odd.
Also the move to Windows 7 made me go a bit mental. Instead of C:\...\Tom\My Documents with My Pictures and My Music inside that it's all C:\User\Tom\MY EVERYTHIIIING.
lol
@RedGrittyBrick: extremely elegant
the equvilent of cat is copy in windows i think
@RedGrittyBrick He asked for a non-Excel solution, so why not?
10:51
I was preparing a follow-up about UnxUtils just in case :-)
eh, for basic stuff. there's a REALLY nice busybox build on windows
Subtle. One of our students had copied ~300MB of (probably illegal) music to her work area and hoped we wouldn't notice.
BYE-BYE MUSIC.
Heh.
I still wonder when my university's going to notice that I host a service to download TV series from a local streaming portal.
Granted, it's just a script that looks for *.mp3 files on the student drive, but it's effective.
10:54
@tombull89 why not silently replace the contents of each file with something horrible ;P
maybe they already have and love it
@JourneymanGeek That could very well be! :D
@DMA57361 haha, high-pitched screaming, or white noise.
@Journeyman: Good god! So there is. Nifty!
@tombull89 or maybe even someone saying "We know what you're doing on the school network, be afraid."
10:56
@RedGrittyBrick: I don't think its as complete as unxutils, and you need to preface the commands with busybox, but oh... SOOOOO useful...
@DMA57361 Haha. But please make it with a text-to-speech synthesizer.
@slhck Microsoft Sam? haha.
for maximum effect, make it so the first 15s of each file are untouched >)
@tombull89: i'd check if there's anything good there. I regret nuking the load of palm apps someone hacked into one of our systems
not that I'm bored atm or anything :P
10:56
That would actually be a really good on-topic fun question for Super User.
and.. poof class!
@JourneymanGeek Oh, I do have a look before I nuke everything.
If it's blantly dodgey, it goes, but if it's just one or two tracks I let is slide as it's probably for education use.
There's one guy who backs up his USB into folders in his work area...minorly amusing is he's got links (i.e. shorcuts) to our Adobe CS5 software.
He probably gets home and wonders why he can't use Photoshop, etc.

Q: Close question after some days of acceptance (if user accept the answer)

mraufkI get disturbed by an answer for a question posted by me, if I did accept and confirm an answer a couple of months ago. I better suggest you to close/mark the question as "no more answers needed".

Ah, I see.
It's like, "I want this feature! … nah, forget it" :P
Or: "I want this feature...but not bad enough to get downvoted for it."
Well, rep's free on MSU anyway, so I don't think it's such a big deal to be downvoted.

can't open this question in China :) creepy eh

Q: Help me get past China's Great Firewall and reach blocked sites

ShawnI wonder if there are any other users who are annoyed like me by the Great Firewall set by the Chinese Government. If so would you please present me an effective way to get on YouTube? Since it's going to be China's flag-day or something, I tried almost all approaches from the internet like ultra...

it loads about half the question (not even answers) then times out
@Gareth Should I censor it for you? :P
btw the FG chat bot finally added me!
I commented on that meta post about the China dupe being closed... basically just hoping it doesn't get any significant attention and end up with superuser.com being fully blocked :P
do they monitor individuals like that?
oh great! either it's a sleepy bot, or it needs human intervention :)
they have entire teams (even on a city level) that monitor the web for anything against China or how to climb the firewall
they also flood anti-China posts with pro-China comments etc
creepy >_>
13:29
so I wouldn't be surprised if a post like that climbed up Google rankings for "how to climb the <insert topic here>"
it's coming up to a major holiday as well where they always go mental about this sort of stuff
all the illegal download/streaming sites that are really popular here get shut down, because of the 'foreign influence'
all the VPNs get aggressively blocked etc
so a wee bit nervous :) hopefully it's me making a fuss over nothing and they don't even see it
Damn.. YouTube is nothing in comparison to that
Every time I'm on vacation in Germany, it feels really weird to use it, since they block more aggressively and you can't find half of the videos you want to see
So I get the little China experience whenever I'm there :P
haha, yeah. They really do that sort of stuff there?
Particularly for music videos, yeah. They turn up in search but are blocked when you want to view them.
Switch to Austrian VPN, works like a charm.
(That's the benefit of living in such a small country nobody cares about – even the music industry can't be bothered to file complaints or make negotiations)
it's quite phenomenal how you can get almost anything here (except more... adult stuff :P since it's illegal) because China doesn't really care about copyright. However if it's a serious holiday it all disappears like it never existed...

e.g. I had satellite installed a few years ago and got to watch foreign movie channels a lot. When it came up to the National Holiday they actually had it censored as a permanent black screen with Chinese writing explaining they didn't want to offend the government by broadcasting. Quite crazy really
@Gareth Censoring satellite?
13:44
@Gareth what is it you're actually doing over there?
yeah - it was a local provider (probably stealing a Filipino or Thai signal knowing what they're like) -- switched the box on one morning to catch the news and every channel had a black channel
lol
@slhck: I run my own proxy to circumvent my ISP transparent proxy... cause it mucks up ip address detection ;p
I haven't actually been to any sites that are censored... ever

superuser.com/questions/337325/… WHY DOES THIS GUY HATE THE SPINNING SHINY PLATTERS! PLATTERS GOOD!
lol
hmm weird. My net got completely shut off

THEY ARE ON TO YOU!
also, how did you post that with no net?
13:50
@tombull89 I've been working out here a few years, is all. I complain about the shitty internet here but there's lots of good stuff too! I'd be mad otherwise
you mean the bit about the satellite? as soon as I posted that the video I was streaming stopped and everything stopped resolving
DNS completely messed up (using Google DNS because the local ISPs poison the DNS)
fwiw, I thought that could be a fun question

A: What is hpsetup?

CornfusedThe hpsetup has been on my iphone for a long time. We do have an HP Photo Printer on the premises which is not even plugged in & never gets used. Not sure how/why hpsetup shows up on my iphone, but if it is useless or it belongs to someone else nearby(?), I will try to delete it.

yeah, I caught that earlier - it's difficult, a bit of a half-answer
it does seem to shed light on it being related to a HP printer, but I don't think it's substantial enough to be a "good" answer
could be a comment on the question maybe

ah great, my university has obviously lost my data
@slhck don't they have, y'know, backups?
@tombull89 It's complicated. I want to buy a student ticket for the public transport, and they (the public transport organization) say they can't find my records with the university.

As you can imagine, we’re sitting on quite a bit of data here about programmers and the technologies they use.  We’ve used this for various things in the past (for instance, you can use your history on the site to promote yourself on Careers 2.0) but we’ve never done a deep dive into the data and presented what it says about the popularity of various technologies among developers.

Well, as you can tell from the title of the post, that ends today.  Thanks to the help of our summer math intern Qiaochu, we pulled millions of data points around some of the most popular technologie …
