Q: Can I upgrade my Soltek sl-67a-c motherboard from Pentium II to Pentium III?

jedatuI have a Pentium III processor and I thought I would replace the Pentium II on my Soltek SL-67A-C. The motherboard has Slot 1 so the PIII fits in fine, however, when I turn on the computer the bios does not come up. Here's the link to some specs on the board: http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/motherb...

Doesn't he realize that people give away P4s pretty much for free these days?

> I am thinking I may have to adjust the jumpers on the motherboard to match the speed of the processor
o_O

he might be right
Slot 1 refers to the physical and electrical specification for the connector used by some of Intel's microprocessors, including the Pentium Pro, Celeron, Pentium II and the Pentium III. Both single and dual processor configurations were implemented. General With the introduction of the Pentium II CPU, the transition from socket to slot had become necessary. With the Pentium Pro, Intel had combined processor and cache dies in the same package, connected by a full-speed bus, resulting in significant performance benefits. Unfortunately, this method required that the two components be...

I'm too young to know that... :(

hm. not the part of the question i wanted to cite
lol... i think PIIs were new when i was 13 ;p

12:13 AM
Where does it list that?

under 440bx - click on slot 1 and it should link there...
what's the preview thing called anyway?

@JourneymanGeek: Oneboxing.
Sounds like old school overclocking... :)

it is ;p
misses his PIIIs
one got dropped and stopped booting. the other just dropped dead.

The oldest thing I remember touching was

12:18 AM
but it was dead, I got DOS to appear once but that's that... :(

i had an XT, then a 486, then a PII, PIV, pentium M, core 2... then i inherited at various times pentium IIIs ... ;p. now my main laptop is a core i5, which is moderately more powerful than my desktop ;p

It's kind of one of the first laptops... :P

that is sooo coool
how big is the screen?

Dunno, pretty small.
It's from AMSTRAD.

that looks like a full sized keyboard
so i'm guessing something like 9 inches

12:20 AM
But well, it couldn't display that much.

yeah, low res.
still, soo coool!

I dunno what I touched first, either a XT or a 486...

mine was a XT clone
think my parents threw it out at some point :(
old school cases were so much better
granted..
is tempted to have a knife switch for power on his next build

Playing good old Dave
and Rockford
I remember playing a Sea Math game at school...
...and how my first computer was too old to be able to run Windows 98... >_<

lol. my first computer had a CGA screen. windows? BLAH.

12:26 AM
My father was in the in the Windows 98 setup encountering an error about memory or something and saying "seems you've got to wait, let's reinstall Windows 95".

And at the Windows 95 and 98 time I remember having played Keen, Duke Nukem, Doom (had a nightmare once when we did multi-player too much) and the less known Rodent's Revenge:
You are a cat and have to move blocks to capture the mouses and then go eat the cheese, although the above seems to be a quite hard level... (you can walk diagonal too)
Hmm, there's only one cat and one mouse, perhaps still easy. I believe the holes allow both to go through a random or linked other goal.
Now that's where Portal got it's idea from... :P

There was also a game where you would slalom down a mountain and avoid trees and an angry cat, I believe it was in a game pack.
There it is, Ski Free.
And Missile Command.
Good old times...
Now you've got to emulate most of them with DOS box, and the others are most likely 16 bit which are a hassle to get alive on a 64 bit system...
I wonder where limit in what Super User still supports in answering lies.
Because P II is pretty old...

lol
i don't think there is one, with good reason.
we DID get a windows 3.1 question i think

12:42 AM
I wish the AMSTRAD laptop wasn't been thrown away... :(
Although I don't remember exactly, but I don't think it's still in our basement. Perhaps there are is other interesting computer stuff there, not sure if it has been cleaned out over the years...

12:53 AM
Is it just me or is the whole network apart from the chat offline or under maintenance?
Ah, I see a "we are offline" title... :(

1:37 AM
lol
works for me

huh, are answer downvotes free or what?
the only single vote was a downvote, but no sign of losing rep for that
but then again it doesn't even show that I downvoted

@slhck no, only question d/v are, or maybe the answer was deleted? or maybe you d/v a community wiki answer?

@DMA57361 No, it's a "normal" answer
Maybe it was because I navigated away from the page a bit too early

could be

Well I'll just put it on meta, maybe somebody can find out

refreshed the question page and tried again?

OMFG, I need a break from this site... I dreamt I was answering questions :/

I answered a question just before I went to sleep, and just checked the site the moment I woke up... no wonder why I dreamt I was doing something!

@WilliamHilsum: I went to sleep with the thoughts that I would gain edit privileges on PP.SE the moment I woke up, and it apparently happened.
I also once went to sleep in the middle of giving a first answer on a question.
But in the morning there was already an accepted answer but I posted mine anyway.
Don't know why I went to sleep in the middle of writing it, I probably locked the laptop and forgot I was writing an answer...

Which site is pp?
and lol...

lol. i had a question closed while i was answering it ._.

@JourneymanGeek: Have that too, and my answer was really kind of a reversal post.
Posted by Jeff Atwood on June 13th, 2011

In March 2010, we rebalanced our reputation system to favor answers.

While we value good questions (and asking a great question is absolutely an art), we want to explicitly encourage people to provide the best possible answers. Without people interested in providing good answers, the questions are moot. We know that answers have more intrinsic value than questions, and the reputation balance should reflect that.

The question asker already enjoys a substantial benefit beyond reputation gain from upvotes on their question — namely, they get great answers to their question! Thus, the asker shouldn’t need as much reputation gain.  …

But well, nothing we can do about it, unless we can revive the question...

@TomWijsman: and.. it was reopened ;p

Your question? Nice.

the one i was answering halfway, yes ;p

A: Why Standards Place Limits on Data Transfer Rates?

Journeyman GeekIn general one of the advantages of a standard is, that with adaptors supporting a certain standard, and cables supporting a specific standard, it will work. With that in mind, most IEEE standards tend to be conservative, slightly overenginnered, and will generally work as advertised. There's no...

that one

@JourneymanGeek: Learned about that on university, perhaps part of the text from above sildes to improve your answer... :)

well, yeah ;p
hmm..
I thought ieee did most of the standards?

ISO is pretty well known too, they really have quite some standards.
ITU-T is specific to Telecommunication and IETF is specific to Computer Networks and Internet I belief...

Q: Does UNetbooting need to generate a separate boot config file for each computer ?

HackToHellI am trying to boot Linux out of my thumb drove to reset a Windows 7 password and destroy Deep Freeze . I used Unetbootin to extract BackTrack 5 and it boots up properly on my sys using Plop Boot manager . (for some reason my Asus mobo will not boot it ) Now the target PC does not have Plop boo...

Can anyone help me with this ?

Paper sizes for example, are ISO. And some drawing rules. But I believe there are a lot of computer science standards from them too...

10:32 AM
@HackToHell: unetbootin only does one OS at a time.

@JourneymanGeek thanks

(Never heard about it, nice that Journeyman does know it)

let me answer that ;p

that may be your problem

@JourneymanGeek why ?

windows dosen't usually flip the bootable flag

HackToHellI looked at some screen shots of Kubuntu and I liked it so I went to Synaptic and installed the kubuntu-desktop package and set my desktop window manager to kde and rebooted. @JourneymanGeek okay thanks for unetbooting :)

did that work?

Anyone know if it is possible to loose the populist badge during a recalc if you no longer meet the criteria?

11:31 AM
hmm, is it even possible to lose a badge, at all?

i have no idea.. prolly something to check on meta?

Seems that the recipe for getting the badge is posting a humorous answer!

well, that's often a good way to get rep too

Yes, it seems. But I'm not really good at that :(

apparently so does being high on flu meds.

@slhck cool... I am happy, thanks!
I wonder if I can game the system... e.g. there have been other times when I have very close to populist... wonder if I can downvote other answers then undo down vote!... I wouldn't do that though!
@slhck hehe, I can see the deleted answer! superuser.com/questions/4714/…
