12:31 AM
unless you do a special command, which i forget, ubuntu will NOT upgrade between versions

1 hour later…
1:45 AM
Isnt it just apt-get upgrade-dist ?

2:38 AM
@SimonSheehan: Doing it that way, one would first have to edit sources.list. It is also dist-upgrade not upgrade-dist. The recommended way of upgrading is by using do-release-upgrade or update-manager -d.

3:07 AM
@SimonSheehan: dist-upgrade ;)

3 hours later…
6:00 AM
hmm
dist upgrade also upgrades held back packages

6:24 AM
hmm, i found a pinout and circuit diagram for fixing a trackpoint to a PS/2 out...

7:10 AM
love TrackPoints

wondering if i can make rewire one from a dead laptop into a custom layout
it'll still be PS/2 only but i can live with that
basically standalone, left mouse button approximately where it is on thinkpads, right mouse button below that and middle mouse button approximately where the I is

I guess it would be pretty easy if you could take apart an UltraNav and have a look at it.
Used PS/2 ones are pretty cheap on eBay
Well, relatively, compared to new USB ones.

i got the pinout ;p
and the keyboard from a very much dead thinkpad
just a matter of time, design, and bothering to do it

I have one of those. But I plan to resurrect my X31 some day.

lol.
the r51 is beyond saving
its gone through 2 hard drives, 3 logic boards a monitor, and two cd drives
and has a bizzare error about a stuck key. even when the keyboard is unplugged
(well, its plugged in to boot it)
... which i fixed before... come to think of it

7:16 AM
The place where my local LUG has its meetings is a datacentre which has a couple of IBM Z-Series mainframes, and they have ThinkPad keyboards

lol
I miss the bristol lug :(

looks cool

tho, they used to meet at a pub ;p
oh oh
(nothing to do with lugs, but looking at that is what got me looking around for the keyboard thing)

That wouldn't last long on my desk
I have a Cherry with blue MX switches here

lol
i'm getting a unicomp customiser at some point

7:20 AM
They use the same switches I think

no
cherrys use microswitches, unicomps use old school buckling springs

I think I am thinking of a brand beginning with F actually
Felco or something
oh of course
yes, IBM Ms

never heard of em ;p
best keyboard i've had was a alps
no idea what my parents did to it :(

I actually ordered a Customizer from them, but they only tell you how much the shipping is after you order

7:22 AM
they email you presonally and ask you which way you want it sent

shipping is close to half my order ._.
not any more, its on their order thing

and it doubles the price of the keyboard, so I said forget it

eh, it did double
but i really need a good keyboard, i am so much faster on a decent fullsized ;p
they've been pretty good so far, i had to ask them about shipping weight (6 pounds o0) and if i could get a european style enter key on a US layout

it would not be a US layout then?
like the backslah would have to be on the other side

hm, standard US layout for them uses a rectangular enter key

7:27 AM
I know

the bigger q or mirror L shaped enter key is better

with the backslash right next to it
Not seen an L since my Amiga

well, my desktop's logitech has a L shape with a US layout
its only circa 07
but it sucks, too mushy and the keys are too 'shallow'. I got better typing speed on my thinkpad than that

yeah, I have never seen a good Logitech keyboard
or Microsoft
Have you seen the ThinkPad X1? I was getting tempted by it before I saw that it had one of those crappy Scrabble style keyboards
although the one on the Edge Series is better than the ones on Macbooks and VAIOs

lol
yeah. They're using the same one on the edges apparently. I hope to god that dosen't become standard

7:34 AM
I doubt it will. They just use them on the more consumer laptops, to tempt people who may otherwise buy Macbooks

scalloped keys are <3

and they break from the industrial ThinkPad styling that goes back to the '90s

yup
well, industrial design wise, they have made SMALL changes
mostly for the better ;p

I had my X200s stolen. Not sure if I have mentioned it to you. I really regret not getting around to installing Prey on the Guest account. It even had GPS. It would have been so satisfying getting the thief busted.

erf
no, you didn't
and that sucks

7:37 AM
Luckily I had everything backed up, but I'm gutted
I'll only feel better once I get an X220

lol
i have no idea when i'll get mine
or if it'll be a x220 or a x220i
and there's a SLIM chance i may be getting a cr48
which would be slightly annoying, since i might run out of desk space... ;p

I'll go i5 I think. I doubt the i3 X220s will have the IPS screen option. I'm so glad they have better screen options now. It's long been the weak point of the ultracompact X models
Unfortinately, only the i7 ones have USB3

well, in my case its through a friend of my dads, and its whatever they are getting
eh
even the 'normal' thinkpad screens are above average

No, the screens on the X series has been well below average since the X6x days
the one on my X200s was crap for Adobe Lightroom, which is the main reason I want an IPS screen
so I can edit on the go, as soon as I take the pics
next to a Macbook, you really see how poor it is

aww, darn
oh well ;p
i'll keep that in mind in 3 years, i graduate, and i figure i can blow a paycheck or two on gear ;p

7:44 AM
I had the TN panel on my X200s by the way. The European X200s did not come with the proper X200s high res screens with good picture
can't remember if they were PVA or IPS

i've no idea what model we have here, it should probably be identical to the US ones

so the lid was not carbon fibre reinforced, like the chassis, as they have normal X200 titanium rollcage lids
but at least that way there was room for a webcam

lol
the thing i probably will use the least ;p

I skype video all the time, for work mostly
I work with a guy in San Francisco

ahh
i'm in general more comfortable with text than walking

7:47 AM
we usually just screen share and do voice though

ahh
i don't like talking either. its inefficient ;p

no way
when you are screen sharing you cannot type at the same time

g
i suppose not.

4 hours later…
11:44 AM
Meh, ranked 3000+ in Google Code Jam. Only 1000 first get past Round 1.
I was working too long on the second problem and apparently my algorithm worked but had really bad performance.
I should've moved on to the third problem but that looked a lot harder and I don't know if I could complete that one...
My guess is that for the second problem I had to use a bit more formulas and a bit less while iterations... :)
But well, I'm not trained into writing out formulas because it is easier to write out while loops... :(
Perhaps I should practice next year, ol get some insight from StackOverflow/Programmers/CodeReview (whatever might be the right site).

oh, I kinda missed that, what's in for you if you win or get to the top X?
@TomWijsman But congrats anyway for participating and completing :)

12:07 PM
@slhck:
Competitor(s)	Prize
1st Place $10,000
2nd Place $2,000
3rd Place $1,000
4th—25th Place	$100
And if you are in the Top 25 you got to fly there to compete against the other Top 25 contestants.
QR --Enough points--> R1 --Top 3000--> R2 --Top 500 --> R3 --Top 25--> Final
I usually drop out in the middle of R1, most times because I have a bad performing algorithm where even profiling doesn't help...
@slhck: Problem 2 was space traveling, you had to build boosters and use them. I was really timing the construction time and decreased it on each iteration.
It's much more simple and fast if you just turn those iterations into a formula which sums up towards the solution time instead of counting the booster stuff...
But I just went on with the iterations as I didn't see how to get to a formula.

@TomWijsman Oh, interesting.. yeah, makes sense

I should probably have drawn it out.

I also often fail to come up with how to transform iteration into recursion

X --travel to next --> Y --travel to next--> Z
Where travel to next = time without booster + time with booster
And then somehow figure out if a booster will kick in and when it will kick in
And I figured out while refactoring that I could just start all booster at the beginning.
Which was late in the profiling process...

Oh how this reminds me of my first programming class :)

12:17 PM
So, apparently, boosters can only start after t_0 + time required to create booster.
A --3--> B --10--> C --4--> D --10--> E
The numbers on the arrows are distances. A booster only works till you reach one of the stars (letters).
So I came up with an algorithm to just pick the highest 3 numbers, and I would remember that I have to boost between B and C, C and D, D and E
If a booster takes 11, I can boost the end part of B.
So it's like A --no booster --> B --no booster+booster--> C --booster--> D --booster--> E
And I could simply figure out the split between B and C by checking when the boosters became ready...
Funny that it's quite an adrenaline rush when you are busy and then when it's done and look back how it should have been it all suddenly looks so easy. :P
First problem was simple, it was turning
.##..
.####
.####
.##..
into
./\..
.\//\
./\\/
.\/..
Second Problem: Space Emergency
Third Problem: Perfect Harmony

heh, I actually couldn't deal with the stress of such a task

Yeah, I figured out that I finally had something that could just to the small data set in < 4 minutes.
So 4:10 before the deadline I was like: Hey, it is fast enough now for the small dataset.
Only to see my code complete slightly after the deadline... :(

Meh :(

Still, I need the small of the Third Problem too in reasonable time to get in the Top 1000.
But well, it's something for next year. As I said, I should think more in formulas and less in iterations...

Sounds like stuff for codegolf.SE

12:26 PM
And figure out if there are functions for some of the things I type out manually.
@slhck: Well, it would be fun to place the problems there. :P

But I'm sure many of them can be deduced to the same formulae or algorithms

Q: So I was out drinking last night... How do I remove a tattoo?

Raven DreamerGeralt got into a bit of fun with the Blue Stripes last night. After getting rip-roaringly drunk, the Witcher thought it might be good to see if it was possible to float across the river on the bums of four prostitutes. It wasn't. The Witcher woke without equipment and a new tattoo on his neck. ...

Some game question titles are funny... :D

1:25 PM
hmm
its confirmed i am getting a x220i on may 31st <3

2:03 PM
@TomWijsman Haha, priceless
@JourneymanGeek Yay, so finally you know what you're getting :P

yes ;p
sort of
;p
when is important too

haha, yeah, but now that's no mystery anymore as well

well, the 160 gb hard drive is still
it MAY be a SSD
or a very unusual option
just hopes it can run minecraft, and source based games ;p

:D
well that should work

2:40 PM
lol
yeah, it should

@JourneymanGeek Thats one nice looking laptop :O

'ello

hey there!

how's things @slhck
I'm a Master's student of Computer Science at University of Vienna and a research assistant at the faculty.

I'm a heavy OS X user, I like Ruby more than I do Python. Also, I'm a part-time musician and recording engineer.

great, thank you! spending a nice sunday afternoon how 'bout you? @Sathya

2:50 PM
varied interests @slhck

@Sathya Yup, gotta keep myself entertained :)

indeed, I'm just lazying away. almost time for dinner here
another 9 days till get fanatic on MSO & SO

I don't even have plans for dinner yet, gotta resort to pizza probably :D

nice
I'm still thinkin

@Sathya SO still interesting? Kinda lost motivation to be involved

2:56 PM
@slhck I'm there just to get the fanatic badge :D plus some general clean up & flagging
hard to answer questions
the champs will answer before I can finish off one line ;|

@Sathya I really wanted to get to 2k at first but then I thought.. Naaah
Btw A few days ago I read your Gmail got compromised.. PSN related? @Sathya

@slhck yep,

PSN related? Big ouch there.

it's really my fault though
let me get the URL of the post

Kinda makes me worry though, I mean the password I use is the one for those bulletin boards you only register once and then never use again
but still

2:59 PM
here you go
it's a mistake from my past where I used the same password

hmm, gotta see if two-factor authorization is available now here
that's funny, the Google Authenticator app for Android lets you install a third party barcode scanner
But now it works.. that's a really neat feature

well just ensure you dont have the auth code saved for 30 days
which just about defeats the purpose

Good morning, everyone.

and damn you @slhck for the pizza cravings :\ just ordered one

Yeah, and I always carry my mobile anyway

3:09 PM
Yay! Just broke 4k rep :D
Only 6k away from getting the mod tools :D

morning @MarkSzymanski, congrats

Hi, @Sathya. How are you? And thanks!

@Sathya Oh, sorry :D Are you worried about eating junk food?
@MarkSzymanski Congrats :)

Thanks, @slhck!
How is everyone?

@slhck aw heck no.

3:11 PM
and brb

hungry, and @slhck just pushed me into having a pizza. now to wait for 30 mins

Well at least that's okay, we sometimes have to wait an hour for delivery

btw, lots of shitstorm in reddit
well /r/starcarft anyway

Q: Wet cell phone, somewhat fixed, want to fix more

David HoudeI dropped my phone into some water, immediately removed battery soaked in rice(all i had at work). The phone dried, but the keyboard(G2) had some bad keys that have never correected, and there seems to be some kinda of residue on the screen, and the backlight is not uniform across the whole thing...

> soak the phone in alcohol
I've never heard of that method to rescue broken phones

alcohol?

That seems like it would do more harm than good.

3 hours later…
6:33 PM
@MarkSzymanski Alcohol is a pretty good thing to use to be honest, not drinking alcohol that has all sorts of impurities and fuzz, proper isopropyl alcohol is an excellent water displacer and grease cleaner and evaporates much more readily than water would. An hour or two in a warm place after a dip in isopropyl would do the device no harm whatsoever.
Problem is, that the damage has already been done, turning it on with any water between contacts could have caused the damage they are seeing

Ah, ok.

isopropyl also may not be best around any rubber seals that they have in their mobile, has a habit of causing rubber to perish a bit... but the physical PCBs would have no problem

Ok, thanks for the explanation @Mokubai!

hey @MarkSzymanski & @Mokubai

Hi, @studiohack! How are you?

6:42 PM
Sorry for the information splurge... :)

Hehe, no problem @Mokubai :)

@studiohack Heya, having fun?

@MarkSzymanski hey, I'm good, how are you doing?
@Mokubai having fun, doing what? :P

I'm doing great, thanks @studiohack.

@studiohack Just, "are you having fun?"

6:43 PM
@Mokubai ummm, sure :P
@MarkSzymanski glad to hear that

Oh, there are people here
Thanks @Mokubai for the explanation on alcohol :P

@slhck No worries, I work with electronics so have picked up a bit :)
the main reason to use isopropyl though would be to remove wierd residues from when the water dried out, if it was particularly salty (sea water) then you could end up with slightly conductive links where the water evaporated and left salt crystals between the pins on chips...
@studiohack You don't sound sure, are you actually having fun or not? ;)
thinking about it, is there any reason that question wasn't moved to electronics.se as it is basically about mobile phone pcb cleaning?
or does anyone know a mod there who could tell if it was on-topic?

7:07 PM
phew, I mean, why not, but depends on whether there's any hope to recover that thing

They have a couple of similar type questions... not mobile phone specifically, but with some work on his question the OP could ask there....

8:00 PM
Anyone know anything about downmixing audio from pc into prologicII ?

8:17 PM

8:56 PM
Thanks @Mokubai
