Can't really test it myself :/

I think I should enable it for music purposes, but I wonder what the side effects are.
I usually have music that's of different volume, it's sometimes annoying to crank up the volume for one YouTube video and then turn it back down for another.
I usually put the volume back lower at the end of the video though...
I wouldn't really consider enabling this option for gaming though, it will only cause to be more noise.

yo RA.

If there's a grenade exploding near you; dodging that grenade, figuring out where it came from or making sure you are ready to shoot is way more important than knowing about footsteps that are far away.

@TomWijsman best thing when a grenade goes off is to get down on the floor and cover yourself

And if explosions disturb you, your volume is probably set way to loud anyway...

12:04 AM
(in real life)

evening @studiohack :p

at least we're in similar time zones @SimonSheehan :P

@studiohack Or... throw it back.

@TomWijsman HAHA - good point :P

Depends on where it lands and how long he pulled the pin and the type of grenade and probably some other things.

12:06 AM
@studiohack Amen to that :P Its when people go "Morning*"

considering buying a new motherboard for my Zune 30... when I had it looked at, it needed a $80 part - I can get it for ~$20 on ebay...

I could never handle the insides of something that small :p

@SimonSheehan haha :P you and I can say evenin' - 7 PM for you, IIRC

@studiohack Something like that :P

@SimonSheehan a Z30? those are not small. they have been nicknamed bricks :P

12:08 AM
There was this video of this israeli special forces guy... he has a grenade thrown at him. He grabs the guy who threw the grenade, and throws him over the grenade...

@studiohack Haha, wow. Can't say i know anyone with a zune though :p

@SimonSheehan nope, and they've been officially discontinued... I have three :P

@studiohack Oh really? Heh.. thought they still had some Zune stuff... just the store or something right?

@SimonSheehan yes, Zune as a service lives on as the music provider in Windows Phone - but individual hardware is done and gone... I really like them and am disappointed to seem them gone... if you look up the HD on Amazon, they are very highly rated (1600 reviews - 4.5 star)

@studiohack Pretty good :O Everyone here has an iPod.... or a blackberry.

12:11 AM
@SimonSheehan blargh on both counts :P

@studiohack Well I like my iPod... EVERY kid here owns a Blackberry for that silly BBM service, except me of course :p

I've always been somewhat of a champion of the underdog - and Microsoft has been that the past few years... plus, I tend to be pretty loyal most of the time...
@SimonSheehan IIRC, you don't have a cell phone?

@studiohack I have one - Some cheap samsung thing the phone company gave to me for $0 :P

@SimonSheehan nice! I don't :P

@studiohack Well my parents pay for it and gave it to me, so I'm not complaining... Its useful for the most part. Nothing fancy though!

12:14 AM
@SimonSheehan :P I'm hoping to get a WP at the end of the year, but we'll see :)

@studiohack Why a WP?

@SimonSheehan because it integrates tightly with Outlook and Windows, has Zune inside, and I'm interested to see what a Windows Phone will be like... its also the most innovative mobile OS right now...

@studiohack I really haven't seen much of it... All RIM over here :P

@SimonSheehan yeah? around here, people have mostly Android or cheap stock phones (with no major OS), iPhone is starting to trickle in, since we just got them about a year ago...
some RIM...have yet to see a WP in the wild (except for maybe once) lol

@studiohack I don't even understand the point to BBM... seems useless to pay for instant messaging when you have text.

12:20 AM
@SimonSheehan I don't even know what BBM is? Blackberry Messenger? is it really IM?

@studiohack Yep, thats it.

@SimonSheehan I've heard of it, never knew what it was... I text for free and unlimited via Google Voice - ideally I should get Android and text for free...since that would integrate the best... or even iPhone... lol

@studiohack Haha... I love my iPod touch, couldn't go without it :p

@SimonSheehan I feel the same with my Zune HD :)

@studiohack :). So whats new with you? Since yesterday at any rate :p

12:24 AM
@SimonSheehan hmm good question...not much :P slept a little, ate some, been on SU :P
I did take a picture of my workspace in the dark, let's see if I can get it up :P

@studiohack I'd like to see that :p

if it was taken during the day light, @SimonSheehan, it would be very embarrassing and too many identifying details :P

@studiohack Haha, oh well, works anyway :p

I have a very cluttered space :P

Mines full of...paper

12:27 AM
haha lol

@studiohack hopping off for a bit, cya later :)

@SimonSheehan sorry, still working on the photo. talk to you later! :)

6 hours later…
6:53 AM
@TomWijsman As far as I understand, they don't mean equalise, e.g. if loud is 15, quiet is 7... putting equaliser on will make quiet 15 (when there is no other loud noises)... What they are talking about is swapping - so, 15 = 7 and 7=15... I think!

1 hour later…
8:22 AM
morning all

8:42 AM
yay, my desktop is working again
got a new PSU for about 50 dollars. Also... hard drive prices have roughly tripled here

9:02 AM
Spotify in Belgium, yeah!
Not that I didn't use it before today, now I don't have to log in using a proxy every two weeks anymore... :)
Also, I quote RescueTime "you're more distracted than 73% of people". o_O

2 hours later…
11:27 AM
Oh the irony: Having all your ebooks backup up with Backify, which sounded too good to be true (512 Gb of free storage!) and the day after your hard drive fails, they get kicked out as a LiveDrive reseller...

@IvoFlipse ah :/

I believe I still have a copy I made yesterday, but its annoying, because it would have been easier to just download it

yeah, still not good

and its not like I can't download all the books again, but I had actually finally sorted them out a bit :P

@IvoFlipse what a load of crap.

11:33 AM
lol, i remembered them, and i was thinking the same thing

I told you it was a hoax, but I thought what the heck, I'll give it a try and just upload stuff I can miss
but with that I meant can miss if my HDD doesn't fail :P

@IvoFlipse yeah I did tell the same

I didn't use it, i was considering using it as a thirtiary backup for my music but was too lazy

@JourneymanGeek I did exactly that :P
only my music and ebooks were there
guess I'll have to get a legit livedrive account instead
which does seem quite affordable

11:36 AM
@IvoFlipse: i have two backups of nearly everything ;p

@IvoFlipse I knew that was unfeasible, never bothered setting it up

apparently the prices of HDDs have gone up threefold in the past 2 months

yeah the floods have hit bad

2 terabyte of storage for 10$/month

Posted to Hacker News

11:37 AM
about the same price of buying an actual 2tb drive really

@IvoFlipse: yeah, even retail
the drive i got for the dell cost me 49 dollars. its up to over 150

your title is wrong @Sathya termiantes :P
Yeah I just wonder how reliable livedrive is off course :P
given that its soooo much more than mozy

@IvoFlipse corrected :P

perhaps I should review it for the blog ;)
and use a general password to store crap there

why not Live Skydrive or whatever MSFT offers?

11:41 AM
@Sathya 25 Gb? You think my ebooks fit on that?
Or my vacation pics :P

@IvoFlipse ah yes
why not Amazon S3?
if it's only for backup..

I was just looking into that :P
a dreamhost server sounds interesting too, but only because I want to mess around with one
> No. Carbonite is online backup – not online storage. It is meant to be a backup of the files that are on your computer – not a place to store files in order to free up space on your hard drive. If you remove any file from your hard drive, we wait 30 days for you to recover it, and then we delete that file from our servers, too.
Ah I guess that's the catch
They can probably fix their redundancy if they can simply redownload files when they 'accidentally' lose them

11:56 AM
I think backblaze does the same thing
unlimited storage for 5 dollars a month a computer
but certain filetypes don't get uploaded

12:15 PM
WTFH is this person thinking ?!

SQL Server 2008 R2 Express is free, can we install and integrate with VS2010 Express? How to uninstall those database already come instal...

@Sathya I'm sure it can get confusing for people not familiar with the way things work here …

@slhck once, I understand. twice ok. 4 times?

@Sathya Aahhh, didn't see this before

@slhck I've rejected 4-5 of edits, deleted ~3 "answers" - @studiohack has rejected couple of edits too.

12:30 PM
@Sathya That's nasty :P
Hm.. Since when does username-autocomplete not work with one letter anymore?
It tabs all the way through to "send", "upload"

way to go on the HN stuff @Sathya :P

1:03 PM
What's up with the close votes? Is someone going through old questions, or something?
Or is it because I put the time interval on week, that could explain too... xD

@TomWijsman It's the week setting, probably :P

@IvoFlipse o_O

haha … what the?

> We guard you 24 hours a day with a stolen camerasystem for your and our safety

1:07 PM
that looks a bit shopped though :D

true

Yeah, the text is only rotated (slightly, or maybe not, I can't tell), not transformed in 3D.

the bottom lines of the text and the sign are not perfectly parallel
yep

there's also a 'glow' around the letter, which shows its likely to have been shopped

I really checked that … I'm a buzzkill :P

1:12 PM
with paint I bet, like a real scientist ;P

Use the edge of your keyboard, or stretch the mouse/power cable; unless you have wireless stuff as well as wireless power...
Hmm, I'm watching my laptop from an angle the background text of the chat blends with the background color.
If I go up or down I suddenly see grey boxes, I thought my eyes were getting sleepy...

haha
reminds me that I should switch to a dark Eclipse theme again

1:35 PM
@IvoFlipse :P

1:47 PM
Hi folks!
Hmm...

Q: Why does everything in computing work with a base number of 2 to the power of x?

Jacques Flash-drive sizes (increase by powers of 2) RAM size (increase by powers of 2) 32bit, 64bit, 128bit (increase by powers of 2) etc... Can someone explain this, I think it might have something to do with device compatibility and also binary code in which case could you explain why these devices ...

@Linker3000 swear that's a dupe of some other..

@Sathya Looks nice!
Do you work with the notebook's keyboard then?

that screen is delicious..
yes, @slhck

I should get a second monitor too.
I've had one in the past.

So are you tilting your head then or does that work for you? … I really should get a second monitor

1:55 PM
I would mount my second monitor above my laptop screen.

XD. i swear all indian flats look the same...

lol, @JourneymanGeek, please explain?

@slhck: for a moment, i thought that looked eerily like my grandma's flat... then i realised its the grill, and that particular type of latch

No more posts under the week time interval, the month interval looks quite busy though. One-day-I'll-get-to-year...

@slhck it works well, the big screen is my primary screen, I can type without peeking to keyboard
@JourneymanGeek LOL!

1:58 PM
@Sathya If I look at the keyboard I write wrong stuff, like this: O:ydf: co jrrnm xgy j:b'y p;:e ydcoW

@TomWijsman hehe..

It reads Sathya is cool, but can't read this.

lol
I hate having to look at the keyboard to use shortcuts with more than one hand

@slhck: Just pretend like typing the letter in uppercase, but then with other modifier keys.

More generally, damn you, ⌃ ⌥ ⌘ ⇧S!
btw can new users with 11 rep upvote answers on their own posts?

2:05 PM
@slhck no. The 15 rep to vote doesn't include an exception for your own question (unlike commenting).

ok, I thought they could at least do that on their own posts, but alas!

Hello guys
I am trying to print document and asked how i want it printed: "Halftone or dithered?"

Anybody knows what is the difference?

well, at least Tony seems to have figured out the system crosses fingers

Document without images.
Or graphics

@Borisyo Who asks that?

2:11 PM
@slhck Printer

@Borisyo Your printer driver?
I don't even think you can compare "halftone" and "dithering" that way. Halftone in printing is what dithering does to digital images.

@slhck Sorry, it asks if to dither or duffuse.
It is halftone printing but asks whether to dither or diffuse.

@Borisyo I have no idea. Maybe just print a page and see how it looks.

The document i am trying to print is in not good quality so i thought maybe dithering will make a difference.
Thanks anyway.

@Boris_yo Dithering mostly helps, but I don't know what "diffuse" means
you guys know if there are any 3G and cable/DSL routers?
like if the DSL/cable connection fails, it switches over to 3G?

2:28 PM
@slhck 3G? You mean mobile router?
I mean router for 3G modem?

yeah
but with DSL or cable too

@slhck Something like a router with a SIM card? Not that I know of...could be interesting though.

3G and Cable? Nice backup! But 3G connection is expensive.

@Borisyo I wouldn't care :)
Actually, it's not
I pay 4€ for 1GB monthly, and I could even pay less

@slhck Not if you are on unlimited maybe.

2:31 PM
I have got a USB dongle that works over 3G...I wonder if I could get a router with USB and plug the dongle into that with DDWRT...

@tombull89 Something like that, maybe

My USB dongle is £15 for 3GB...I got it when they were quite new.

It's just that the cable internet connection is pretty crappy, and if something happens, I'd switch to 3G – preferably immediately, but switchover time would be acceptable

@slhck For gaming?
@slhck What is your ISP?

@Borisyo No, not gaming – I'm on UPC

2:34 PM
@slhck Yeah, my home internet is also a bit ropey. I don't know how much it would cost or how it would work, maybe if the router pings a website 5 time and it fails over to the 3G

@tombull89 Most routers should have an internet awareness feature, I presume
But the failover situation is interesting

maybe something a bit like this
Provides one USB 2.0 port for 3G USB modem connection
@slhck I think the standard firmware on SOHO routers maybe not (or just on/off).

@slhck Are you in Netherlands?

@Borisyo Austria

@slhck And your currency is GBP?

2:38 PM
@tombull89 Looks pretty much like what I had in mind
@Borisyo No, it's €

@slhck Oh yeah...

:P

Granted, I'd expect to pay a bit more and get a better branded one...perhaps you could drop into the ServerFault "The Comms Room" chat and see if they can suggest anything.

@tombull89 I'd probably do that, thanks!

3:05 PM
that edit is weird (10k only)

3:18 PM
@slhck spam actually

@Sathya Interesting, for a registered user

@slhck or registered user-spam is fairly common
is it just me or does anyone else actually agree with the OP here?

Q: Rising number of invalid/minor edits?

animusonI don't know if other people have noticed, but I've seen quite a rise in the number of silly edits that don't really "fix" anything in the questions, especially from newer users under 200 reputation. Maybe we should change the edit approval system so only users between, say, 250 and 2,000 reputat...

> Updating the answer with further information, additional examples (I had an example I rejected for this but it doesn't want to appear in my recent history), or different code
that, I've seen as well
the big problem here with Super User I guess is that if you're hesitant and leave a suggested edit as-is, somebody sooner or later will accept it

I agree #2 should be rejected but I believe rejecting #1 & #3 isn't rght

I also think this is a very subjective thing

3:27 PM
no doubt

… which is why I think edits should be approved by two users, like on SO
@Sathya you mean this should be rejected? stackoverflow.com/suggested-edits/136062
I'm generally okay with tiny edits, but only if there really wasn't anything to fix

@slhck I'd actually suggest that as a new answer

exactly

@slhck Draytek 2820 and onwards have 3G failover - my 2820 has a built-in DSL modem, a second WAN port for any type of modem I care to use and a USB port - you can use any two at a time - eg: DSL + 3G failover.
Not the cheapest though!

@Linker3000 how much would you guess?

3:35 PM
Does anyone know a good program/way for drawing out patch panels/network layouts? I thought Visio would work, but, it seems to suck for this :/

@slhck About £150 with wireless N

@Linker3000 Sounds reasonable though, thanks!

@WilliamHilsum I use yED for all our network drawings - it's not specifically geared up for network diagrams, but it is free and the files are saved in svg format.

@Linker3000 I will take a look, thanks... We have about 80 ports here, but, two switches and 8 sets of patch panels - just getting a little confusing and I want to draw it out!

Bleh, this stinks

3 hours later…
6:22 PM
Hi all

hey @DanielBeck... how are ya?

Good. Today's a great day, an amazing day even. It's invoice day! :-)
How are you @studiohack

@DanielBeck what is invoice day? the day you get paid?
pretty good here @DanielBeck...got some snow this morning, about 3 cm

@studiohack Invoice day is the day I go to the post office and send out one or more invoices. It's incredibly fun to do ;)

@DanielBeck hahaha, that is a fun feeling :) I take it that you are self-employed?

6:32 PM
@studiohack I am. Have been for a while by the time I got my degree a year ago, so I just continued with it instead of getting a job. So far it's working.

@DanielBeck awesome! not everyone can do that

6:44 PM
I'm going to kill my neighbors. Who in their right mind starts drilling holes at 7.40PM? It sounds like they're right beside me...

Jeff & Joel are joined today by Dave Winer, who’s upset that we don’t have a jingle to start the show! He “invented” (well, pioneered, really) the XML-RPC protocol. Dave tells us the story of how and why the protocol came to be.

Right now, Dave’s working on a “magnificent symphony of software” – it’s the communication system he wants to use. It involves a minimal blogging tool with only RSS output (plus a dongle that will push the RSS to twitter, etc), a “River of News” aggregator, and an overarching tool for creating content that can be picked apart and included on other platforms. …

9:09 PM
@DanielBeck Well, better than 7.40AM :)

2 hours later…
11:12 PM
@IvoFlipse Don't suppose you can try emailing them direct - say you are a mod here and will write a very good review about them!? It may be worth a shot!!! I wouldn't usually do things like that, but, I got my new job after writing in and stuff - so - all for the direct approach now!!!

11:39 PM
Hello all. Just to let you know I'm back, sort of. From next week I'll have my evenings back for the first time in six months. Should be a little more active then :-).
