erg
superuser.com/questions/348484/… this guy is posting a whole load of crappy answers >_>
My explorer.exe managed to get up to 4 GB today, then a bit later it suddenly dropped back to 140 MB. o_O
On the other hand, my system hasn't crashed in the last four days (which includes playing both StarCraft II and Skyrim a lot) so I think did something good with the excessive driver updating.
00:42
@JourneymanGeek I flagged that one.
I posted a reply on another one of his answers here superuser.com/questions/348484/…
He's prolly trying to get 'easy' rep... and failing.
@JourneymanGeek Indeed... he's got just overall bad answers
well, there's a certain.. lack of effort

A: How to start wuala on the linux commandline with auto login

tekknolagithere is a probably a config file where you can store your username and password

But that's just.... awful.
01:30
@SimonSheehan: yeah. I mean, i don't expect the sort of super-human effort will puts in (i mean, he actually has written software specifically to answer questions!) but... at least poking around the program minimally...
@JourneymanGeek Indeed :/
hm, my dad apparently kills his computer mice...
apparently the scrollwheel stopped working on his current one, and it was running for god knows how long with a leaky battery
I never used a wireless mouse until we got one at school :p
my dad has this thing for tiny wireless mice
we got my aunt a nice $15 logitech one :p
01:35
XD
I cannot stand tiny mice
or tiny anything. I like my hardware rather hefty
@JourneymanGeek Go big or go home? :p
lol
I have clumsy fingers ;)
and i have this thing called the lethality rule
Any 'tool' i have must at least look and feel like you can beat someone to death with it
Ok, its actually meant for kitchenware...
My hardware apparently just lasts forever
Like everything I own
01:56
lol
my recent stuff has been pretty solid
actually there's a few things i would replace if it would just die ;p
02:44
Just some running around, I think it is limited by the CPU now. Should look into a lower FPS, lowering the CPU the game uses, changing their affinities so they are on separate cores.
Also need to do some net monitoring, because this probably uses quite some bandwidth...
03:00
Also shows on local recording, it's definitely CPU related then.
Casting uses a solid 40%, well, that explains...
A local recording of doing something on Windows / YouTube is just fine. Seems I got to resolve the battle for the CPU then... :D
is it just me, or is everything on the featured tab appearing multiple times?

Q: featured tab shows entries more than once

Journeyman Geek Running firefox 8.0 (the current latest release version), on windows 7 32 bit - it dosen't seem to be everything, but a good subset of them

03:19
@JourneymanGeek: Just you... Firefox 10.0a1 here.
hm
fixed itself on reload
03:37
@JourneymanGeek, still need an Adium user to test something?
And does it have to do with my question, perchance? :)
04:05
@daxelrod: yeah, just wanted to ask how themes worked...
but if you're the one testing, well, it would be easier to leave it to you ;p
What do you mean by "How they work"? How' they're installed, what they do?
yeah
from what i can tell, the contact list format is similar, but replacing the default with another one keeps emescene from starting
Awww. :(
I could have sworn there was another one that might work....
ooh
instantbird might support adium themes
Looks like it for message styles
Wow, I admire your encyclopedic knowledge of IM clients
04:18
lol
i need to test it, and thats in another box
and its almost lunchtime!
Don't let me keep you from sustinence
updated my answer with instantbird related stuff ;p
lol. I was looking for a pidgin replacement
Thank you!
I know about a dozen clients, most of them are stuff i wouldn't use
What do you prefer?
04:21
pidgin for now
i've been toying with instantbird for a bit, and yattm for when i need an uberlight linux client

Does anyone know if Truecrypt works well through dropbox? ,.... I know it probably won't work on more than one PC at once... Just want a safe way to transfer sensitive files from home to work.
06:47
i think lifehacker recommended doing it
you would need to sync the whole volume each time tho
07:29
whoa superuser.com/questions/77404/… does this dude SWEAT acid?
@JourneymanGeek LULZ
08:28
morning all
08:41
@JourneymanGeek I thought TrueCrypt was block encrypted and Dropbox only sends modified file parts; that's why people recommend that method because you don't have to send the entire volume each time
09:16
@DMA57361: i thought dropbox compares the files... I could be wrong
it won't compare byte for byte thou, will it? it will compare hashed sections of the file or something of that nature
09:37
I actually have no idea >_>
but i don't think it was block level upload.
@JourneymanGeek dropbox.com/features "Dropbox transfers just the parts of a file that change (not the whole thing)." as the 5th bullet. I don't know the specifics, but I'm sure it doesn't send entire files if it can avoid it.
@DMA57361: My bad there.
09:52
np, and now you know you can safely use it without fear of uploading 5GiB a day ;)
why would i worry about that? ;)
we actually have fairly well planned IT infrastructure here
oh yeah, you have really good internet out there
ya. and apparently 3 different sets of backbone
(2 of the big three ISPs run their own, fiber is done by a consortium, including most of the major players involved)
10:39
@WilliamHilsum - Wuala works like Dropbox, only uploads changes.
(Also, it uses AES256 by default, Dropbox removed this feature. Both from the software, and from the homepage, where they advertised the service as 'secure'.)
(For some weird reason, the page DMA linked still contains the encryption. AFAIK they never really used it ... check the EULA ... it should be there)

6 hours later…
16:39
@DanielBeck: twitch.tv/tomwij/videos Seems 1080p won't work because I think my CPU restricts running both simultaneously, I think 720p / 24 fps / 4000 kbps is about to be the right setting. Gonna do one more test later on to confirm that...

1 hour later…
17:48
Does anybody know if it's possible to tell Windows not to search Windows Update for drivers but rather just prompt me to give it a local file?
oh, and if I send in a external WD hard drive with a broken controller to Amazon, they'll probably not give me back my data, right? :P
18:31
@slhck probably not :P
That's so stupid. If I take it apart and verify that the enclosure is dead, but not the drive, I won't get a new one.
If I send it in, I'll lose the data.
Guys, please read this Meta topic. I'm not sure anymore whether the votes by @slhck and me were correct, so if you disagree, please vote to reopen.
@DanielBeck Hm, as you said, if an Android Tablet is not a computer, why should this one be?
@DanielBeck: Even if it were a computer, it would still be too localized.
18:47
then again

Q: Vintage computer on-topic?

dsolimanoAre questions about repairing and maintaining vintage computers and peripherals on-topic? I'm thinking, for example, of Commodore 64 Atari 800XL S-100 machines IBM PC XT These would seem to fit within the scope of the FAQ, as they are computer hardware, and not videogames or consoles. On th...

@slhck It once was a computer. No idea if this is relevant. Just wanted to give the user some exposure in case we've got it wrong to speed things up.
seems like a consensus
Linked it from the new Meta topic
And added why I think we should revise that older topic.
well, yeah …
see my other answer
+1 @slhck
Looking forward to how this is resolved.
18:54
I definitely won't argue over it, but if it's been closed by a binding vote, then I think Sathya should have the final say
since DLink's US site didn't have driver's for my wireless adapter, I went to Australia/New Zealand and got drivers there. :P
@studiohack That's … weird?
@slhck it is... the US site had info and specs, and officially stopped supporting it in 2008...so I randomly checked Australia, and their site design is different and everything, and I looked up the exact device number and it had several downloads for my device...works super!
That's clearly a bad way of offering support :P
I know, right?! I'm amazed that it worked, I was worried about language or region stuff
so yeah, something to consider when you can't find drivers...if it is international enough, you can try other regions
19:05
Haha, you mean that your driver now speaks to you with an Aussie accent?
@slhck hahaha :P no, its english and everything, can't tell its an Aussie .exe
LOL

@studiohack That post was so nasty you had to delete it twice!
@slhck that's quite likely :P plus Ivo had to come and add a triple whammy. :P
19:18
FYI Mouse Without Borders, is an awesome piece of software - Synergy alternative for Windows only systems, but allows copy/paste and file drag and drop between windows systems.

although it doesn't seem to work on a mixed network... :( I have two machines on a wired connection - they work fine... but another machine connected to the wireless network - doesn't work.
are wired and wireless connections (coming from the same router) considered separate networks?
21:05
@studiohack hm … considered by whom? the router?
22:00
@slhck MWB considers them the same network...so that's not it...
I'm having issues with having a 3rd machine hook up....
22:10
@DMA57361 I wonder though how smart Truecrypt is/would a save/change heavily modify the file :/ Will do a few experiments... @JourneymanGeek Thanks @shiki - thanks... looking at it.
haven't seen @simonsheehan for a while... ping me sometime! :P
@shiki - I don't really want to pay! (sorry, being cheap!)... but does look interesting..
22:32
lalalala
22:45
@studiohack Do you visit El Gaucho that often?
@WilliamHilsum What is up William?
@Boris_yo Got myself a (short) job at a cool company... very busy, very happy and very tired! you?
Oh... And, I think the job is slightly thanks to SuperUser... I know the guy looked me up/saw me here... so, that was cool!
The job is slightly?
@Boris_yo El Gaucho? I have no idea what that is? explain?
@Boris_yo not sure why you're asking me if I visit that restaurant?
22:55
@studiohack Because your profile image resembles El Gaucho's logo.
A little.
ah, I see the connection @Borisyo :)
@studiohack Initially thought it is actually.
no, I live in the US, so I've never been there... I'd like to visit Israel someday
@studiohack The day before end of the world?
@Boris_yo lol, preferably before then :)
22:57
@studiohack Yeah, or stuck flying in an airplane like in 2012
@studiohack I hated acting in that movie.
@studiohack @WilliamHilsum Guys what do you think about hi-tech cleaning compound? The one that is sticky and cleans electronics.
@Boris_yo never used it... like to try it though
Never tried it either! Personally, I don't like my machine to get dirty... and... I just use cheap £2 OEM keyboards and replace it every so often... cheaper (and a better solution) than the cleaning stuff!
@Boris_yo slightly?
@studiohack @WilliamHilsum It is not that expensive and lasts long time:

http://www.buyincoins.com/details/magic-high-tech-cleaning-compound-super-clean-slimy-gel-product-2977.html
Besides i don't have money to replace laptop's keyboard every so often.
wow, that is much cheaper than I thought
@Boris_yo ahh, laptop - ok, I understand!
@Borisyo: I use the branded stuff. Its pretty good
and there's some things that its very good at
23:03
@JourneymanGeek Well i used (counterfeit?) compound and it did very good job.
ya. the branded stuff comes with a jar ;p
but used properly, keyboard goop is very good
I wonder if this is fake: http://www.buyincoins.com/details/whitelight-white-light-whiter-teeth-system-in-as-little-as-10-minutes-product-461.html
