12:01 AM
hm
I'm all out of ideas

what about this? @JourneymanGeek those two I'm not sure about. one goes to the floppy, I think

floppy

Be right back.

@WilliamHilsum are you talking about my image?

12:05 AM
@studiohack ... no... just tried to put a funny image up!... Sorry, what do you need help with?

can't find the CPU power thing, see above for a photo of the mobo
18 mins ago, by studiohack
user image

Those two are floppy power power
there may not be one - not every machine had them

32 mins ago, by studiohack
user image
I have one of these free, and I can't find a place to put it. there's no id on the mobo either.

That chip - the one that says intel on the motherboard, can you read any markings on it? I can try to look it up / see what age the machine is
@studiohack That is a P4 power thing... your machine looks too old for it

oh?
the one right above the fan says intel 815, fw82815 copyright 99 sl5yn and l1410110 @WilliamHilsum

12:08 AM
I think that is pre p4
can't quickly find a firm answer

it did have a double floppy... so it's posible is very old
if so, I may just scrap this pc for parts
basically put, @WilliamHilsum, this PC will turn on the optical drive's flashing lights and the heat sink fan, but no power when the power button is pushed

@studiohack Can you please try to take a few more high quality images... in parts if you have to, of the motherboard - and I will do my best to help - or, try to look for other engravings/model numbers (will be direct on the board in slightly bigger print) and I will try to google it for you
also... please @me - doing a lot of work, and I may miss your message if you don't

thanks @WilliamHilsum, will do...

hmm
2001 era
This is a list of motherboard chipsets made by Intel. It is divided into three main categories: those that use the PCI bus for interconnection (the 4xx series), those that connect using specialized "Hub Links" (the 8xx series), and those that connect using PCI Express (the 9xx series). The chipsets are listed in chronological order. Early chipsets Intel licensed ZyMOS POACH chipset for Intel 80286 and Intel 80386SX processors (the 82230/82231 High Integration AT-Compatible Chip Set). List of early Intel chipset includes: * 82350 EISA * 82350DT EISA * 82310 MCA * 82340SX PC AT * 82340DX PC...

@JourneymanGeek, @WilliamHilsum high res photos above.
no etchings or identifying information as far as I can tell @WilliamHilsum

12:24 AM
I can't see anything unplugged at all

yeah...

@studiohack I don't suppose you see any white stickers with a code beginning or including "AA-"

I see something there that sort of looks like the word "board"... anything else around there?
Got it!!! Other corner!

what?

12:28 AM

yes, that's it!
what does that mean? @WilliamHilsum
shall I type out the numbers?

I can't read it - can you please type it clearer as it isn't coming up with anything on Google
You have an Intel board, and that is the model number
I saw one code in big in the middle - that is the identifier that it is an intel board, but, there is always a sticker with an AA number... I was just trying to find it.
I'm sad - I do this sort of thing far too often!

AZEW152962 AA A73683-201 @WilliamHilsum

D815EGEW is your motherboard! Looking up spec/manual for you

@studiohack that matches

12:30 AM
@WilliamHilsum wow, how did you do that?

@studiohack you can search the numbers :p

@studiohack A bit of intuition mixed with Google - I do repairs far to often - you learn the different markings that different companies have

Theres the mobo right there

As I said, one of the ones you gave had that big number in the middle - only Intel have that - so then, I was just hunting down the AA number

wow... you guys are awesome! thanks!

12:33 AM
@studiohack Its why were here ;)

haha lol @SimonSheehan

Although, sorry, it doesn't seem to have lead anywhere, I can't see the manual :(
and damn... Chrome crashed... Lost the answer I was typing on SO :(

thanks anyway @WilliamHilsum, you helped a lot.
use Lazarus, for form recovery. works in Chrome and FF

@studiohack Back to FF now?

If you are still not getting anywhere, it could be just dead - it is old after all... If you are still having problems, I am sure someone else will help you, or, I will do it tomorrow... just got to get on with some work and sleep!

12:37 AM
yeah. I use Chromium from time to time

@studiohack I use it... but... it was in incognito mode :(

okay, so the BIOS knows there's a HDD hooked up to the system (on that other system @SimonSheehan) but can't find it when booting

hey @WilliamHilsum and @studiohack, isn't this the manual ftp.pdspc.com/Docs/Vector/GE/GE-TPS.pdf

@SimonSheehan :P You Out Googled me! I couldn't find it! What terms did you use? I tried a few things without any luck!

whoa! nice! @SimonSheehan

12:38 AM
@WilliamHilsum "D815EGEW manual"
It was the first result! :P

Bah :(

I'm wading through it, should I look for anything in particular?

'board components'
;)
that confirms there's no CPU power connector. I blame that on going straight from a PII to a P IV

I've been using FF for 8 years and only just found out Control + click opens the link in a tab..

Ok... I went back to Stack Overflow and it remembered the question! WTF :S... Does it now keep half written questions on the server or does local storage work through incognito mode now? :/

12:45 AM
@WilliamHilsum It does actually! I typed half an answer on my PC, had to go, and found it on my iPod!

@SimonSheehan wow... that is pretty cool!

@WilliamHilsum Its great, although I'm not sure how often it saves and such

@SimonSheehan got the Optiplex to boot! oh yessss!
now running chkdsk

@studiohack Woot! Yay!

the system you are working on?

12:51 AM
I must have not done something right the first time around, because its the original hard drive...

what ended up the problem?

@JourneymanGeek he got multiple pcs :p

no, @JourneymanGeek, someone gave me three old XP systems, and I just got one to boot that was supposed to have a bad mobo

@studiohack where did you get these machines anyway?

hm, i think you seated something properly when removing and plugging in everything
ahh

12:51 AM
@SimonSheehan now have 6 :P

lol
and i thought i was bad XD

@SimonSheehan a lady at my church, I'm her PC support guy haha

haha, nice!

she sold me a SATA enclosure for $15 and gave me three PCs lol.

Holy wow

12:52 AM
literally!

@studiohack Wish I got stuff like that from all the crap I do around the school :p

oh yeah, anyone here does hackintoshing on random hardware? ;p

I have two laptops and an old server. only one of the machines is within the last 4 years.

@SimonSheehan: i DID pick up a c2d from the trash ;p

@JourneymanGeek Nice!

12:54 AM
all it needed was a new hard drive (owner yanked out the one in it) and i needed to remove the stock video card and go integrated cause it was utter and complete junk

I think I'm going to let this old PC go, just use the parts, since it seems to be the oldest.. the one with all the issues. seems too complicated to fix /figure out
@JourneymanGeek how many systems do you have? :P

@studiohack Definitely keep the Optiplex going !

yeah, i saw that it has a 1GB stick of RAM at least in it!
I think 1.5 GB
come on ckdsk

@studiohack Has it found any errors?

12:57 AM
@SimonSheehan 82% there. none so far, I think. the file system is FAT32, I want NTFS

@studiohack FAT32... oh dear. I still can't believe we continue to use NTFS :/

what's wrong with NTFS? I like large file size... should I stick with FAT32? what are the advantages?

@studiohack No no, I just don't really like either now... it feels outdated compared to what the ext filesystems are now capable of

oh okay... it works for me, so I'm good for now :P
ckdsk seems to have frozen. :(

@studiohack Yeah, I just like the speed of it more than anything...and the need to not defrag
@studiohack uh oh... reboot and round 2!

1:01 AM
@SimonSheehan haha. keyboard freezes when it enters ckdsk

@studiohack Haha, very odd... I wonder if its a driver issue or something

it's doing it faster this time

Oh good.

@studiohack: at the moment 2 laptops on my desk, and a atom in the office that definately work, that are mine, shared desktop (which i built), a SGI octane (which i haven't booted up in years since the display blew, and i threw out the display) which might. and another 4 free systems, of which only 2 work...

@studiohack any word from Lenovo yet?

1:05 AM
@SimonSheehan Lenovo?

freebie wise, one was an overclocked AMD with a bizzare cooling system which went boom, and a PIII that stopped working, the dell, and a compaq laptop
he means me ;p

@studiohack oops, meant @JourneymanGeek!

@SimonSheehan: the local IBM branch took over from the malaysian branch, and they are calling lenovo. if that fails, my dad knows a guy who knows a guy... but my dad would prefer to have it done over usual channels
so i should know some time this week. I might post on the whole.. saga... on plus once its over

@JourneymanGeek Sounds way too complicated :/

quite
most IBM service tended to be 'oh, its not working, we'll take a look'

1:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek And Lenovo makes such nice PCs....this doesn't stop me from wanting an X220 though :p

this is 'we can't cover it, but we'll check' waits a week 'we can't cover it, but we'll check', dad yells at them 'drop it off at the depot' - who have no clue, and call ibm malaysia, to get the contact for IBM singapore who...
@SimonSheehan: the charging USB port is apparently flawed and tends to break
i'd suggest investing in accident coverage for warranty if you can, or just not using that port unless you need to
its a lovely machine, but...
is not amused by the experience

@JourneymanGeek Ah... Honestly, I think once I've got the money, I'll probably end up with a Mac

Haha, just got a badge!

and this is why they should have taken my warranty claim seriously

THE FOOLS!

BADGES EVERYWHERE

so. at chkdisk, the keyboard (I've tried more than one) freezes, and I can't cancel the check. at the end of the ckdsk, it freezes as well (or partway through)...

@studiohack Hmm... Is it USB?

mouse works though. weird. how can I format these hard drives? I want to get the data off first
yeah

1:19 AM
livecd?

@studiohack As crazy as it sounds in this day and age, try to find one of those old green connectors.. :p

lool
notes he has two of those keyboards lying around
no idea why
course i have a sun keyboard as well, and that isn't compatible with... anything at all

Old enough for you? :p

Honestly I think that keyboard is almost as old as me..

1:23 AM
lol
what sort of keyboard?

boot stops at Drivers\Mup.sys
(safe mode)

hm
thats a very common problem ._.
but i can never remember what it is that stops it ;p

really? gonna go google :P

its not mup.sys, its the one after that it that causes the problem ;p

ohh? good hint :P @JourneymanGeek

1:33 AM
Gotta hop off for the night, see you all later !

good night @SimonSheehan! thanks a ton for all the help/suggestions/encouragement! :)

@studiohack: eh, livecd would rule out hardware issues ;)

1:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'll try that :P

and while you're at that, running memtest (which takes a while) and smartmontools (or gsmartctl, which is a gui for that) would be a good idea too ;)
right, now to do a full disk backup, since i'm done installing all 3 'safe' oses on the dell ;p

2:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek what does it mean when a Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD doesn't work well? slash doesn't load?
related to hard drive? memory?

hm
try switching VTs until you get something
(ctrl alt and try all the F keys)

VT?

virtual terminals

also, I think the keyboard freezes at the page where you pick to install or go via live cd route

hm
thats too early to tell where something is wrong ;p
and that keyboard...

2:08 AM
so I don't have keyboard or mouse. but I have keyboard (via USB) at POST
would it help if i formatted and then reinstalled XP?

well, might, but livecds not booting is odd too

Hmm, my Windows decided to subtract yet another hour today...

2:28 AM
@studiohack: Have you tried booting the LiveCD without the hard drive?

no...@TomWijsman I should...

And then there's still Memtest86+ in case removing the HDD doesn't change a thing.

^
that's true. also rules out memory error
also, stock ubuntu is a ram hog. with older systems xubuntu is prolly better as a livecd

I should have access to at least 1 GB of RAM

3:04 AM
Hiya all.
Well, in other news, I'm pumped to be an MSP, although arguable a little less so now that I know exactly what it is. I'm reserving judgement until I have the first e-meeting.

gah. I have XP Pro installed on the Optiplex, but need to reinstall it. I have the product key, but no CD.

3:25 AM
any OEM cd will work
(of the same version. I use the office systems cds - which are small system builder OEMs to restore the dell)
@Moshe: member of scottish parliment?

@JourneymanGeek ... not for XP... Needs a Dell disk, but, you don't need any serial key - if you use Dell OEM (any Dell OEM) it should just install and automatically activate

naw. i've done it with a generic OEM disk, and the dell key
if you have a dell disk, no key

MSP may refer to: Music * Manic Street Preachers, a Welsh rock band People * Magnus Svensson Pääjärvi, a Swedish ice-hockey player. Politics * Member of the Scottish Parliament, title given to any one of the 129 individuals elected to serve in the Scottish Parliament * Moderate Party (Swedish: Moderata samlingspartiet), the Swedish Conservatives * Movement of Society for Peace (French: Mouvement de la société pour la paix, Arabic: Harakat Moudjtamaa As-Silm حركة مجتمع السلم, formerly called Hamas حماس), an Algerian political party * National Salvation Party (Milli Selamet Partisi),...
Quite a list...
@JourneymanGeek I doubt he would be as a student, perhaps Microsoft Student Partner. Although he is into iOS development.

4:03 AM
Yup, Microsoft Student Partner.
@journeyman @TomW :: points up ::

What?
Wow.

Time to write another renderer that allows us to rotate the view. :D

Wait, @TomW you called this?

Passed another time on the chat here, but can't remember that one.

4:11 AM
Nice. We are living in the future.

@Moshe Nope, but someone actually went and did it, probably irrelevant to these messages.

Which would mean I'm too tired to take my math test.
Bedtime.

Probably the best way to get a quick overview of the divisions of the web page and their depth against each other.
I've collected some dollar signs, here they are, grab them while they are hot: $$$$$$$$$$$$

What?!
> So, if in the past you would have searched for [magazine +latina], you should now search for [magazine "latina"].
> The basic reason for withdrawing the "+" operator seems to be related to searches for [ google<space>+ ] and [ +<space>1 ]. Google search up to now has been able to cope quite successfully with searches for [ c++ ] without having to eliminate the "+" operator, because literate users searching for c++ know that there are no spaces in the search term.
> Now that ordinary users have started searching for [ google<space>+ ] instead of the correct term [ google+ ], and [ +<space>1 ] instead of the correct term [ +1 ], because they are unaware of the correct terminology, Google have to allow for searches which include the special character "+" as a separate search term, so have to withdraw its use as an useful operator.

@TomWijsman Yeah, it's been like that for a while. It's just better to quote everything if you want the AND operator.

We return with a new Question of the Week, this time addressing Windows Updates. Lital maatuk asks,

Jens Erat, one of our newest users, gave a very detailed and well thought-out answer about the different types of Windows updates and their relative importance.

Security updates (by default installed automatically) are necessary and important. Install all of them as they fix major bugs which can be exploited my malware and bad guys. Don’t hesitate to install them as the most-current exploits are usually most active. …

@surfasb: Do you know whether the - operator is still supported?

yeah, the - is still supported

Read this just now, makes it more annoying to type.

5:03 AM
@TomWijsman Yeah, then again, I never used the plus. I just quoted it, even though sematically, it's different
Or used the advanced search feature, which helps makes sure I get the syntax right

superuser.com/posts/236630/revisions -> i know the L in DSL and DVL is redundant but its an essential part of the name...

7:13 AM
Im getting really fed up with my laptop now :( Anyone know the quickest/easiest way to recover a Windows backup image to the real machine? It is in .VHD format... it seems whilst Windows is fine in creating the image to any target, it is really picky on recovery methods - it won't connect to my network from Windows PE, and, it doesn't want to get it from my USB hard drive even though I can see all the files there
... Trying to see if there are any options right now I can use to "target" the vhd from the restore utility, but, it doesn't look like this will be successful.

7:24 AM
@Sathya, That showed a complete lack of integrity, Super User shouldn't be a trash bin.

@LanceRoberts having name of product completely changed just because you don't like it isn't particularly good.

7:41 AM
@LanceRoberts: swearing for swearing's sake is wrong . On the other hand, the D in DSL and DVL DO stand for damn

Yay! /review is empty for the day, will do week later today. I wonder if I can make it up till all. It's a great improvement, @Sathya.

@TomWijsman You've really been using all of the features there are!

Hmm, someone just downvoted me on superuser.com/questions/179932/… :(

there, there!
-1 doesn't look so nice

Greetings.

hi!

1:57 PM
We seem to be getting an increasing number of 'I just wondered' type questions which are about someone's general understanding of an IT-related principle rather than a specific problem. The questions can be interesting and do attract answers but they are on dodgy ground according to the FAQ. What to do???
Example:
2
Q: Is the physical speed with which a single bit travels through copper wire the same with 10Mbit and 10Gbit?

IanI was just wondering if a single bit travels with the same physical speed through the same type of wire of a 10 Mbit network as through a 10 Gbit network? As far as I know a single bit has the speed of 2/3 of the speed of light through copper, the faster the network the more bits can be transmit...

Hmm. 90+% of these are really search engine fodder.

I personally don't know
maybe raise it on meta and see what others think

On Podcast #58, Joel and I had a disagreement. Not the first, and certainly won’t be the last:

Joel says that the only bad simple question is a duplicate simple question. I say simple questions are OK as long as they’re actually interesting (in some way) for other users to consider and answer. To prove his point, Joel actually asks the question on Stack Overflow: How do I move the turtle in LOGO? Do you think this question adds value?

We still have this disagreement. Our community is now struggling with the very same issue across multiple network sites: …

@TomWijsman Yeah, I remember that. The comment does cut across the FAQ a bit. I used to flag the questions for close, but I seem to be in a minority on that so I'm generally leaving them alone now unless they are dupes.

2:11 PM
The problem is that the close reason is not there, because Joel strongly opposes.

@TomWijsman @Linker3000: the problem with 'too simple' to me is that its subjective

But isn't the objective of the SE family in the long run to be that reference?

A lot of these kind of interesting questions fall under the first question of this flow chart.

if its 'obvious' or shows a total lack of homework, we already have not constructive

2:15 PM
Yeah, I don't know …
for many "beginner" problems I have with some languages, I actually search on Stack Overflow

Yeah, not constructive handles a lot of general reference stuff.
Although a lot of homework / too-lazy-to-search / ... kind of questions pass these days.

because a) I don't always find the official reference for it ("how to do … in PHP"), b) I can interact with the community there

Taking away time from questions where there are real problems of which solving them would actually help someone rather than filling in an interest which is answered by a simple Google query.

@TomWijsman: People who would have answered the question anyway.

@slhck: Yeah, but SO is kinda crowded.
22
Q: strdup() - what does it do in C?

Manoj DoubtsWhat is the purpose of the strdup() function in C?

Even man strdup if you are on Linux, or some general command reference you should have access to as a programmer anyway.
Although, the answer is quite remarkable.
41
A: strdup() - what does it do in C?

paxdiabloIt's effectively doing the same as the following code: char *strdup (const char *s) { char *d = malloc (strlen (s) + 1); // Space for length plus nul if (d == NULL) return NULL; // No memory strcpy (d,s); // Copy the characters return d; ...

In March 2010, we rebalanced our reputation system to favor answers.

While we value good questions (and asking a great question is absolutely an art), we want to explicitly encourage people to provide the best possible answers. Without people interested in providing good answers, the questions are moot. We know that answers have more intrinsic value than questions, and the reputation balance should reflect that.

The question asker already enjoys a substantial benefit beyond reputation gain from upvotes on their question — namely, they get great answers to their question! Thus, the asker shouldn’t need as much reputation gain. …

> Fundamentally, answers can be filtered in ways that questions cannot. While there is a tension between having “enough” questions and a bunch of amazing, highly skilled answerers twiddling their thumbs waiting around for something to do, in the long run we’d much rather err on the side of having interesting and on-topic questions for these folks to sink their teeth into.

2:24 PM
yeah, I know what you mean

> We feel that the world is awash in questions, but not answers. Answers are the real unit of work in any Q&A system. Therefore, the only logical thing to do is to maximize the happiness and enjoyment of answerers. If this means aggressively downvoting or closing unworthy and uninteresting questions, so be it.
That first quote (sorry, swapped them around after your response) seems to promote interesting questions.
But well, too simple and interesting / on-topic are not the same though...
I would say
1
Q: Is the physical speed with which a single bit travels through copper wire the same with 10Mbit and 10Gbit?

IanI was just wondering if a single bit travels with the same physical speed through the same type of wire of a 10 Mbit network as through a 10 Gbit network? As far as I know a single bit has the speed of 2/3 of the speed of light through copper, the faster the network the more bits can be transmit...

is not even on-topic with regards to computer hardware and software.
It feels more like the Physics of a wire...

yup
and where's the actual problem to solve

Or computer networking, for that matter, Server Fault?
It feels kind of like an homework question. I don't think most people suddenly start to wonder such things...

@TomWijsman Exactly - but where's the rush to flag it for closing AND some people will take the time to answer such questions AND these get voted up because, in general, they are good answers...but to an off-topic question.

@Linker3000 Nothing wrong with that, but where does one draw the line?

2:31 PM
@TomWijsman ...and that's where I came in!!

Hmm, a meta question is probably the way to go then...
...to form some criteria when they should stay, and some criteria to decide under which close reason they fall.
Because depending on the situation you can choose between off-topic, not constructive and not a real question (rhetorical).
@Linker3000 Reminds me of a professor showing that it's easy to discuss in a circle.
@Linker3000 What bores me today is short answers that are not helping that basically say "turn off your computer" or "uninstall Windows 8 DP".

2 hours later…
4:26 PM
On second though, I'm overreacting cough

@DanielBeck Reference post?
Although we can't really revoke rights :|
@DanielBeck I doubt it.

@Diago Pretty much all of today's edits. I can't help it, I think such censoring is ridiculous, unless users overdo it.
And mentioning a product name isn't swearing...

5:01 PM
@DanielBeck FYI
1
Q: How to prevent users applying a policy without agreement?

DiagoA few hours ago a user posted Let's clean up low-quality posts with profanity on Stack Overflow.
