Flagged as not welcome...

Does anyone know if there is a version of WinPCap that works on Windows 8?
...or a suitable alternative that can capture network packets from an application I'm developing?

4:15 AM
@GeorgeEdison Until Windows 8 is finished, I doubt you will be able to do much :/
You can probably try to download the DDK and develop something yourself, but, until winpcap or another drive updates, I don't think it will be possible

4:33 AM
thanks @JourneymanGeek wish you the same!

@WilliamHilsum I don't even have Visual Studio installed on here :P
I have VS 2010 Express installed on Vista.

morning all

@Sathya Happy Diwali to you! (Only Indian guy I know!)... When did it actually start? My dad lives right on the border with Little India (Brickfields) and I could barely hear him with all the fireworks a couple of nights ago!

@WilliamHilsum :) thanks William!
festival's today, but the fireworks go off a week in advance ;p

Ahh... Thanks!
@Sathya - THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.... I was just typing up a question on SO (been a godsend through this project) and I alt+tabbed, and for some reason, the form cleared/couldn't undo... I installed Lazurus when you told me about it, and it saved the day!

7:38 AM
@WilliamHilsum :) glad to help William!
it's been a life saver for me too!

8:19 AM
I have so much work and just to lazy to get started on it.
In other news... The new proxy at work is driving me batty in every possible way
None of the imgur images display, so looking at questions and answers are filled with broken image links.

And now SU is down :/

>_>
no it isn't

@DMA57361 @JourneymanGeek I can't open a single question

ahh
now its fubared

same on meta

11:08 AM
... :/ still working for me

O_o

meta seems to be working for me

weird
ah, seems to be working again
oh well, that was the most exciting thing today I guess
:(

@slhck oh dear... one of those days?

@DMA57361 Well, I've caught the flu, and it's a national holiday today, plus, the weather sucks :/
so, not much going on

11:22 AM
ah, lovely :/

how are you?

OK; a bit bored atm but looking forward to changing jobs

oh, that's nice! doing different kind of work there?

yeah, going from generic tech guy / data query guy to Ruby on Rails Dev

I love RoR – so you've been working with it before?

11:29 AM
nope :) it's a Graduate position, and they were looking for someone competent at programming to train up (or someone with RoR exp as a bonus)
"train" might be too strong of a word, but you see what I mean

ah I see, well, I've really enjoyed learning it

I've done quite a bit of Python over the last year or so, and understand there's some similarities, so hopefully that'll help
(similarities to Ruby, that is, not necessarily RoR)

yup, they're very similar – but the Rails framework adds so many magic helpers and idioms, it's really easy to get used to
and I managed to get away without needing an IDE :P

well I've enjoyed Python quite a bit; coming from mostly C / C++ it's rather pleasant to have something high level :)

haha, I know what you're talking about

11:34 AM
just got to trudge through the hand-over period from here now

ah, is it going to be complicated? :/

my current team is being broken up and moved around (which is what pushed me to change jobs) and some of the work it currently does doesn't have anywhere to go... but can't really be stopped with having serious negative impacts on other teams that rely on those functions...
it would be bad enough if we had time to sort everything out; but I leave in 3 weeks and still haven't got anyone to hand over some of this stuff too... it's now devolving in to a bit of a check-all-the-procedure-docs exercise

that sucks! well, I hope you still manage to sort it out somehow :)

well, worse case scenario is I that I have to leave stacks of instructions for other people to fumble over... but I'd just rather know these things were sorted, I'd hate to leave people here in the lurch - but realistically I'm not hanging around just to try and smooth other some planning flaw

And then there's always the possibility of people still needing you after you leave
At least that's my biggest concern I currently have for the company I'm doing IT stuff for

11:46 AM
@slhck how big is the place your work for?

roughly 20 PCs
so it's not that much to do

fairly small then; and that makes leaving a bit more painful

@DMA57361 Yes, exactly … it's like a small family. But luckily, my boss knows how to do most stuff. He can even administer all our mail accounts, reboot our firewall, and even fix a hanging VM :P

ah, that's good then

@slhck to potentially save me reading it: how so?

well "funny" is probably the wrong expression. but, it's a review of the first iPod.. kinda makes me think of when we still had our 128MB MP3 players

oh dear... never owned an iPod so shrug

haha, fair enough!

in fact, I don't think I've ever owned a dedicated portable music device

12:28 PM
@DMA57361 I had too many. And I get bored with them. Quickly.
The iPhone has been the only exception to that rule, but it does more then just music.

I don't even use the music functions on my phone. I'm rarely anywhere I would listen anyway... although I guess that may change when I start catching the train, but I'm more likely to read

@DMA57361 I used it in my old car a lot. The new one sadly didn't come with an iPod or AUX interface

@Diago we've a short range FM radio transmitter thing my wife users with her iPod to get around the lack of connectivity issue in the car. I just stick the radio on...

@DMA57361 Yeah, but the quality on that is quite bad here. The current car is only transitional till I get to buy the one I want.

fair enough

Any SQL/.Net Gurus!?
Not even SQL programming, just SQL management really!...

Depends what you consider a guru otherwise ask on SO :)
(I have 5 minutes and then I need to leave, so if it's quick...)

@Diago hehe... I feel like I have already asked too many questions there recently! ... Yeah quick...
I have been developing locally, everything fine.... Trying to deploy to a real SQL box and just having problems - at the moment, biggest is SQL just doesn't want to be found - I have tried every guide I have found without any luck :(
just not sure on the connection string
ezpcltd.com:81 (seems to have a few problems - trying to resolve now)... all database queries just time out with a yellow screen sql error

That's not a quick one, and I am out of time. I will look at it as soon as I log in again.

@Diago No problem, thanks anyway!

Q: Web games to an analog display for the retro feel

Machine ElfI've been enjoying a lot of Flash web games and emulators lately. I want to play them on a 15" CRT TV + joypad hooked up to my PC for the retro feel (actually an iMac, so I'll need the overpriced mini-DVI to video adapter). I assume emulators should work ok as a fullscreen app on the second monit...

I'm debating tossing this one over to Super User since it seems like that the main domain of the question isn't really gaming-related but at the same time I'm kind of eh about the question in general. Any thoughts/opinions?

Jeff & Joel are joined this week by Eric Ries, author and expert on The Lean Startup.  Topics for the chat include:

Jeff Atwood is joining the podcast from his vacation. He has an announcement! He is having twins! In February! This will bring the total Atwood Child Count to 3, meaning they will outnumber the adults. Congratulations, Jeff!

Talk of children leads to talk of war which leads to talk of Battlefield 3. The core team spent some time playing today. It incentivizes working as a team!

ANYWAY. Eric Ries is our guest today! He’s got a new book out called The Lean Startup. What is a …

Hey all

7:31 PM
@Mana Nope. Close it out right, that is borderline for SU, and will require a lot of editing to get it right. To be honest I can't actually see what's being asked. Also asking for resources is also offtopic

7:55 PM
@Diago Cool, thanks!

Why does this question just scream shopping rec? Or at worse which is better?

Q: What qualities to look for in a NAS for home use

AlyI am looking to buy a NAS to use to store all of my media and stream HD (1080p/blue ray) to 3 devices in parallel. Also to use it as a file sotrage device for Macs and PC's with Raid 10 or 5. I have narrowed down options to the QNAP TS-412 and the QNAP TS-419 P + The difference between the two...

@Diago Its shopping alright.

mm, I think it's a bit more objective than that

Eh I thought that too, but then saw "I have narrowed down options to the QNAP TS-412 and the QNAP TS-419 P +"
Which generally means that they just want our opinion before they buy it

@Mana I know. But on SU we cannot take the risk to let a question slide easily.

@Diago I VTC'd, but I'm gonna edit and see what I can salvage

8:11 PM
@SimonSheehan If you can, I'll reopen.

@Diago Give me a minute here and I'll see what I can do
@Diago Done. Take a look now, thanks.

@SimonSheehan Nice. It's borderline but more technical and less of a comparison. Good enough for me.

@Diago Thanks. It is always tricky to change a shopping question to a technical question

hi guys

9:41 PM

@TomWijsman Take care, have a nice break.
Hope you return soon

@TomWijsman Good luck with whatever it is you are doing!
