3:00 PM
:)

you feed it back velocity back as vi

right...

but you should do that in the loop, shouldn't you?

there is not loop... just recursion...

I guess our dictionaries aren't in sync :P

3:01 PM
and maybe that's my issue... maybe MATLAB isn't good at handling recursion?

for t from 0 till t+2 (till some max)

lol...

you want to calculate: velocity = vi+(9.8-c/m*(vi))*2;
then vi = velocity
and it just run again
and again

Recursion: A call of a function within that same function (this does create a loop but isn't one persay)

until you reach the end of t or some sort of maximal value

3:02 PM
Loop: A call of a process within a function (while, do, for, etc)
@IvoFlipse right
BTW my programming for dummies room got closed again :(

preferably you wouldn't just hardcode t, but use the start height and the velocity to estimate how close it is to the ground
once it has hit the ground
t = max and v = terminal velocity right?

It's alive! Alive!

aight... I update my election nomination... short and sweet

3:17 PM
someone should applaud to @KronoS for taking the effort to write all those blog posts :D
4

speaking of which @IvoFlipse did you look over the most recent one... after 5 today I'm going to be gone to the world for the weekend and so need to make sure it's ready to publish for next week

applauds @KronoS

bows in thanks

I was just reading it @KronoS
should get that post opened in Live Writer
but don't know if it can open drafts from the site

sweet thanks!
I can...
but then I'm the owner of them all, but you should be able too...
have you updated to writer 2011? @IvoFlipse

3:24 PM
based on the installer it's trying to download, yes
yes I do

1 hour later…
4:30 PM
Does anyone have any suggestions for questions for the candidates of the election?
I wonder if there's anything they want to see different about the site and what they 'plan' on doing about it
Or how they expect becoming a mod will change the way they use the site
What's their stance on duplicates and how should they be handled

The dupes is a good question... also maybe any changes to the site? @IvoFlipse

well feature-requests are tricky, since I'm not sure if the team would respond to them

oh got ya

but still, things like the blog, the community-faq, I want to know who has ideas of their own
ah, perhaps how they would try to get more engagement within the community

That's what I was trying to get at actually...
just worded terribly

4:44 PM
no problem :)
we could ask them to confess whether they abused the site, as two nominees on SO were found to have sockpuppets

sockpuppets? I'm assuming that's other accounts they own?

yeah to upvote themselves massively
> at least six more files in Froyo and Gingerbread that appear to have been decompiled from Java 2 Standard Edition and redistributed under the Apache open source license without permission. In simple terms? Google copied Oracle's Java code, pasted in a new license, and shipped it.

Whoa!

Nice, WTG Google.

well it's class time... I'll be back in an hour

4:50 PM
good luck :)
btw @KronoS, I really want to try this: lifehacker.com/5739330/…

5:06 PM
Hi everyone
Any new nominees? I can't find the page at the moment...

Hi @Mokubai
we are out of IPv4 Addresses
0_0
what now...
IPv6 NAT?
Are we ready for it?

@Mokubai It's at superuser.com/election

We just ran out of IPv4 addresses today supposedly.
2% is reserved though

@Nifle Ah, thank you very much :)

where's yours @Nifle ;)

5:10 PM
How come there was no ipv5?

I guess we are late on SU they have been discussing this all morning on SF.

No one likes the number 5... just check out linux... 2.4 & 2.6 kernel versions
(I know that 2.5 is the dev branch)

Its second version, known variously as ST-II or ST2, was drafted by Topolcic et al in 1987 and specified in 1990. In RFC 1819, ST2 distinguishes its own packets with an Internet Protocol version number 5, although it was never known as IPv5.
from wiki

@David I was just reading that.

@IvoFlipse The Nifle forecast for the coming year is "Busy, busy, busy". So I feel I can't do a proper job of it. I have a new job that I'm growing into and the wife is on her last year of her doctors thesis and we have a 6-year old

5:14 PM
yup, that sounds quite busy
at least you admit you are ;)

He could just be dodging that moderator bullet...

Besides soon I'll have @Ivo and @Sathya to order around to do my dirty work here on SU

true
I'm actually expecting a surge in mod activity when the fresh blood comes in

What do you mean @IvoFlipse

5:16 PM
People should read my comment on Troggy's comment to Joe's nomination. I think it pretty hilarious.

lol

spelling police out in force eh? ;)

I think I'll put up a meta post with some questions nominees can add to their nomination

LOL yeah @Mokubai
You need to be able to spell at lease decently to be a nominee. Or people will look at you like what??? you want me to trust you when you can't even trust yourself with your spelling. proofread!

5:18 PM
Though to be honest if he can't even spell solve then I would worry about him as a moderator.

they disagree with that on one of the SO nominations

Sock puppeting is just sad
Seriously, it's like cheating at a single player game of cards...

I like SU's nominations, though I wonder whether a minimal amount of experience with the site should be required.

I'm proud to say that all my rep is earned properly (with the exception of me bagging some points on superuser.com/questions/207182/… which I got because @David told me to do it :P)
@IvoFlipse All the nominees have >2k rep, surely that denotes a reasonable level of activity and experience with the site?
Or do you mean as in the mini-mod abilities you get at 3k rep, and the access to tools you get at 10k?

I meant more knowing the history or the site a little bit
knowing the 'regulars'
know how things have been dealt with in the past

5:24 PM
Being involved with the community

surely you can learn these things quickly and some aren't needed to do the actual moderating

I'm afraid I'm only going to vote for people that have had 3k abilities for a while. Closing is a powerful drug

and perhaps fresh blood and perspective is just as important

Tool I mean
:-)

I'm afraid some of the nominees go haywire over some things they've always wanted to clean up ;)

5:26 PM
but it shows some initiative and dedication if everyone knows them and they know the ins and outs of the site...

it's also easier to judge if they are 'worthy' because they have a proven trackrecord of doing actual moderating
hi @Sathya

Q: Does email address obfuscation actually work?

Kyle CroninMost of the time when I see someone post their email address online, especially if it's a personal address, they use something like me [at] example [dot] com instead of the actual email address (me@example.com). Even top members of this community use similar styles in their profiles: jt...

hey @IvoFlipse
still in office =/
11pm here

@Sathya hey

argh.

how's that?
I love Kyle's question
we should submit it to HN

5:35 PM
@IvoFlipse is it possible to get the stats on that ? like the one on A; & B: ?
I'd tweeted it quite some time back, not that I expect a surge from my tweet

those stats were for the whole of SU, but because the traffic on that question alone was as much as an entire day's worth
you saw a bump
1k views isn't even a dent

still would be interesting
@IvoFlipse yeah
nothing much here

I'd have posted it to HN had HN not been banned in office
hey @studiohack

5:40 PM
@IvoFlipse that's a major wtf
@IvoFlipse oh, sockpuppets o_0

the SO election thing?

@IvoFlipse yeah, I'm catching up with the transcripts
was busy assisting my colleagues
so missed out reading up
will be leaving now
later @IvoFlipse & the rest

see you tomorrow :)
sleep well ;)

btw @IvoFlipse reduced activity over the weekend, I'm out of town

be sure to enjoy yourself

5:50 PM
will try to keep my streak on though :D
/nite

plus I know where to find you :)

How are the <> mods distributed timezonewise?

@IvoFlipse sorry, gone getting breakfast or lunch or whatever you call it :P

It'd be dinner by now surely ;)

I'm from the Netherlands, Troggy from the States and random is down under
Gnoupi is from France (but I don't expect him to mod much anymore)

6:00 PM
sorry to have missed @Sathya. dinner? not there yet....haha

I about ready to go cook my dinner...

I see Ivo, Diago and Random moderating the most.

Diago is from South Africa

deleting all your pr0n?

6:01 PM
This counts +0,1 GB every second, has to go 160 GB, ouch... :-(
@IvoFlipse: No, that's something I never store. :-)

lot's of small files, takes some time
...on a non-encrypted drive :P

Yeah, it's annoying, probably the internal fragmentation in the file tables makes it take a long time too.
Full 2 TB drive.

A: 2011 Community Moderator Election

Ivo FlipseAfter the example of the Math.SE site I have some questions that I would love to see each nominee respond to in their nomination (if the choose to do so): Is there anything you would want to change on the site? And how would you plan on achieving this? How do you expect becoming a moderator wil...

@TomWij I saw a folder like that on a machine that had an msn toobar installed.. it was horrible

@IvoFlipse: (if the choose to do so) should be (if theY choose to do so)
in your post -

6:05 PM
@Mokubai: Yeah, it feels horrible. This time it's just a back-up of a year ago...

thank you @studiohack, bonus points for you

do bonus point with @IvoFlipse earn you rep?

see for yourself :)

lol

@Ivo thanks for submitting my question to Hacker News

6:06 PM
no thank you for asking such an interesting question

@David: we'll see! :P

@TomWij I love how I I try to delete that kind of think on my work Vista machine it seems to delete faster than it can work out what's there, it end up with "2 hours to go, 0 files left" type rubbish

@KyleCronin great question! BTW

@KronoS @IvoFlipse thanks, I was reading my RSS feeds and I got to one where Engadget was asking users to email them, and they obfuscated the address
I thought it was pretty silly, and I wondered if it really did anything

Q: Q&A with the candidates in 2011 moderator election

Ivo FlipseAfter the example of the Math.SE site I have some questions that I would love to see each nominee respond to in their nomination (if they choose to do so): Is there anything you would want to change on the site? And how would you plan on achieving this? How do you expect becoming a moderator wi...

There you go @TomWij

@IvoFlipse Are you able to edit the election page modified to get people to answer it?

yes, but I won't why?

@IvoFlipse: or have nominees answer them at your question, so that their existing nominations don't get too long - they can just add a link to the noms

they can
or if you think you gave a great response, incoorporate it into your 'speech' in some way

@studiohack: Ah, I like the idea af adding a link.

6:13 PM
@IvoFlipse I'd just like to see the potential mods actually answer the questions you posed.
I fairly certain of two people I'd vote for, but the third would probably be decided by your questions

I don't want to force people to read everything so I'm probably going to link it, should remove the last two alineas from my about me from my nomination too and perhaps time something more important.

well nobody's forced to answer my questions
but I'd prefer that the election isn't a popularity contest
4

@IvoFlipse agreed and really like your questions

they're like Google's interview questions, in that you shouldn't take it literally or even try to say what you think I want to hear
but rather state your own vision

evening all...seems busy in here :)

6:17 PM
indeed, we we're waiting for you :)

@IvoFlipse never do... just answer honestly... as I do with everything else
@DMA57361 true... my day is now complete

Wil

even more important, mods are current 'chosen for live'
let's kick ass and chew bubble gum @Wil

Wil
I'm all out of gum!

@Mokubai: Oh my... Now I understand.
Seemed to be 670 GB (incremental back-up, doh) --> 1 million items are getting deleted, 100 items a second... >_<

6:22 PM
@Wil The most shamelessly over-hyped game ever...
@TomWij Yowza!
I thought disk caching was supposed to get rid of that kind of slowness...

Wil
@Mokubai I don't think anyone has hyped/talked how good it is... no one really knew if it was going to come out...

right... possibly caught up on the transcript; the meta post / questions look helpful @IvoFlipse

I hope so @DMA57361 :)

I had a good few game friends who kept telling me it was going to be awesome, seemingly only because it was DN:F, who were amazingly disappointed when it repeatedly failed to appear.

@IvoFlipse so are the questions meant to be answered on META or on the nomination page?

6:24 PM
bah... does mean I have to do some thinking :/

Apparently their pattern recognition wasn't good

I'd answer it on meta and use whatever you think is useful to help stand out in your nomination
or make sure nobody will miss your meta answer

ooo, that (not longer thanks to editing) last question's a tricky one to ask nominees, I like it :)

6:46 PM
Is there a process to strip <>-mods of their powers? I'm thinking about people that haven't been around for a long while.

time for class again... see y'all in an hour...

there's no official process, but they will be replaced
but it's more a natural thing

@Wil - You don't want to wield the +1 <> of power?

--> ♦ <-- power @Nifle? ;)

@IvoFlipse ooo, a real diamond

6:54 PM
I don't know how to type <>, and I'm to lazy to find out.

copy paste?

I copy pasted it yeah :P

Yeah that works ♦. So from now I'll probably use ♦ whenever someone else has used ♦ on the same page.
BTW, should I keep flagging comments "belongs on Super User" as noise?
from migrated questions?

yeah, I can easily click delete from the mod dashboard now

super

7:00 PM
@Mokubai Good idea, will check it after. :-)

@TomWij You can enable write caching at the properties page for the drive in device manager, apparently it's not enabled by default.

w00t! Booster badge pour moi
about time

lol
only the 2nd one on the entire site...wow

I've started using affiliation link in most of my links now
never did that before

quietly sneaks in to test something
How do I
How do I test this?

7:11 PM
the /me scripts?

lol, here for clippy, I take it?

Wil
@Nifle Don't get me wrong, wouldn't mind seeing or having the mod tools.... but... I like this site as a user... I don't want the responsibility... and, look at my rep graph! I just don't have the time I used to as it is :( There are people here would be a much better mod than me.

Heh no. Look on meta.so. I asked about chat Easter eggs.
Yea clippy
Bah. iPhone 4. wonders if mobile view is any better. Decides to test on real computer later

I agree @Wil, though I'd prefer to give certain users access, simply because we can trust them with it

@Mokubai Know about the location, but thanks for mentioning it is not by default.

7:14 PM
leaves

I've got to watch out with power loss though, given that it is a storage/back-up drive.

@Wil - I respect your decision, I don't have the time either. But I do think you would be a good mod.

@Mokubai: It looks like this here...
But well, I'm fine with doing a Right Click -> Eject after I'm done one it.

Ah, for USB drives it's safer to use the quick removal, but if it's permanently connected then I'd set it to performance.

It needs me to reboot, but well... It only requires 2 - 3 hours though and doesn't take away much processing power of my laptop itself so I'm fine with it.

Not permanent, but I 'm fine with using the eject/safely-remove feature.

sigh Friday night and I'm hanging out in a chat room with a bunch of SU's

Should we be insulted?
;)
Though I'm at home, ill, watching Total Recall and waiting for a phonecall to pick my wife up from a work do, so I'm not one to speak...

what a life @Nifle
is the misses working on her phd? ;P

I'm ill too, waiting for the wife to come home with my daughter from a birthday party she's been to. I'm having some merlot and watching old Top Gear on the other monitor.

7:25 PM
I don't feel like a Super User now... :-(

Dual monitors are awesome :)

@Ivo - Not tonight, she tries to keep the weekends work free. But works 10+ hours during the weekdays.

what's her subject?

@Nifle Wine would be cool, but I've got to drive :(
@TomWij Any reason?

It's going sloooooooow... :D

7:29 PM
You could program a multithreaded delete program that spawns a million threads as it traverses down the directory tree emptying the dirs folder by folder...

Sociology, She's writing about education. How class (mainly) and gender affects how/if you choose a higher education after mandatory school
And she's looking at data from the 30's and forward

social class I reckon?

Wil
@Nifle & @IvoFlipse - Thanks!

@IvoFlipse Dont know what "social class" means to you but this matches Sociology

well not school classes, I meant
> Social classes are economic or cultural arrangements of groups in society

7:36 PM
@Ivo - Ah yes, you are correct

@Mokubai Think it would lead down to the same thing. But it could be better...

I'm considering "coming out", as in stop hiding behind a swede and use a real photo and perhaps add a little more personal data. What do you think? Is there any obvious downsides?

Well, it is a nice swede....

@nifle: that kind of thing can be nice...or not depending on how you like your privacy...
what do you guys think of this question?

@Mokubai Thank's I try to look my best out in public.

Q: Recording protected streaming videos

PaulJust out of curiosity, let's say I want to record a video stream, that the producer does not have available for download: I could use a screen capture tool, but if the video is hours long, it doesn't work that good. I could try to find the URL of the stream and open it in VLC, which can dump in...

should we answer it, or close? @IvoFlipse @Diago

I don't think it's appropriate

@IvoFlipse took care of it :)
yeah, it is a "shady" question, IMO

It's a legitimate question, but as it now not appropriate.

well it's protected for a reason
the easy answer is: torrent it and don't bother
just as illegal and saves you a lot of problems

I have had similar problems for lectures that where only streamed. I wanted to watch them off line and the only streamed was very annoying.

7:49 PM
sure we could argue that its stupid for them to protect it, but that doesn't mean you it's allowed

@Nifle I'd have thought educational materials the lecturer should have hard copies (dvd etc) available...

Some of my class lectures are available online... but you have to have an account

To be honest that's one thing I like about the "firm" moderation here, it stops it degrading into a "How do I steal X" or "How do I search google?" type site
5
Wow, the moon-rise is a deep red tonight...

@Mokubai That probably only applies if you are a student of that particular university. I wanted to watch to some things from Stanford
@Mokubai Good point about firm moderation

@KronoS: in your nomination: your last line should say @IvoFlipse'S idea...

7:57 PM
How do I launch the easter egg

@BloodPhilia: in your nomination, it should say 'mentioning is the highest form of flatterY in my opinion' - 2nd line

@studiohack it should also be "answered"... thanks for the catch
just out of curiosity what are your recommendations for Joe @studiohack?

@KronoS: ah you're right, funny i didn't see that one :P
@KronoS: I have a lot for him, but am not sure I should bother because Joe doesn't seem to care...it shows what kind of mod he will be, and if he doesn't want to fix it on his own initiative, then he has a problem...

I actually wonder if he didn't it as a joke...
6
Q: What Easter Eggs do the chat sites have?

MosheAccording to @balpha, he SE chat sites may have individual Easter eggs, depending on the site. If you find them, please post. Edit: Because it's so easy to make this stuff up, a screenshot as proof would be nice. (Although Photoshop ain't that hard either...)

so this is why people are randomly coming in and checking out clippy

@KronoS: I kind of doubt it...and nice job linking the Q&A to your post! about to read it

8:01 PM
@studiohack thanks... you gonna answer?

Yes, but I couldn't get it to work...

how do i tell @WikisAtArea51 how clippy works?
smiles

Well, obviously the real Clippy DOESN'T work...
But How do I doesn't seem to launch it.

@KronoS: nice formatting too! I'm not sure if I should answer - I feel that after reading the existing Q&A's, that I may end up "copying" a lot of the answers, mentally anyways...

Even at the start:
How do I launch Clippy?
Now it does! Hooray!

8:03 PM
@studiohack just answer it honestly... I don't think it matters if we echo some ideas...
I'm also sure that you have great things to add

Poor Clippy's never had such an enthusiastic response...

@KronoS: I'm thinking about it - thanks for the vote of confidence though! (no sarcasm)

@studiohack no prob

I honestly cannot keep up with moderator flags lately. I am either getting old or have more works to do then I realised

no worries @Diago, things will settle down after the elections
any questions you want to add @Diago? meta.superuser.com/questions/1950/…

8:10 PM
hey @Diago... thanks for you recommendation... I'm honored

@IvoFlipse Nah, I think the whole thing is to formalised as it is.
@KronoS You earned it.

lol that comment popped up right as I was testing out the gaming easter egg.... so as I was blowing up avatars I got the notification "You earned it"
:)
buries himself in a book now

8:50 PM
> I've had a fairly consistent (and medium-high) level of contact with the site for several months now and foresee that continuing @DMA57361

...?

I think that's important, to not get swallowed up by being on SU (or SE as a whole)
if you have resisted the urge before, that's a good thing

well yeah, restraint is important

everything has to be done in moderation, even moderating ;)

... I've seen that used a few times recently
is it our new strap line? ;P

8:52 PM
something like that :)
programmers' election are open now too

so they are, not really a "user" of programmers, more an occasional lurker
how many of the new sites have elected moderators now?

user30
1? I think it's just math(s) so far, unless I've been running around with my eyes closed.

that's what I thought, but I don't frequent a lot of them
