:11603 Even worse

:11604 how so, 'coz it's same as before ?

I like the button, I hate its position.

Ah. Well that maybe but I <3 the text rendering using DirectWrite/Direct2D

ashishsony
hello all here... :)

Hello @ashishsony

ashishsony
i have a query about ls command... can i ask here pls?

ashishsony
hi @sa

ashishsony
12:13 AM
hi @Sathya

:11628 sure

ashishsony
i have some files that have some text in the notes fiels(the tab where u put notes in the properties dialog box)... so can i output those texts with using the ls command...

I'm not sure I understand, where are you saving the notes ? Screenshots will help @ashishsony

ashishsony
just a min...

hey anybody got the droid incredible or droid x?

ashishsony
12:18 AM

ashishsony
this is the properties dialog box.. basically this is under ubuntu.. but mac os also has ls command so i think its relevent here...

it's tied to nautilus, so I doubt ls can fetch it

ashishsony
oh is it?? ic... :(

~/.nautilus/metafiles
^ location where they are stored
so probably use a script to grep the values stored in there ?

ashishsony
so u mean if i archive these files and open them on some other pc.. they r lost???

12:21 AM
should be possible, I suppose
@ashishsony yes, unless you move ~/.nautilus/metafiles along with you

ashishsony
but i ls ~/.nautilus.. and it lists nothing

cd ~/.nautilus/metafiles

ashishsony
/home/ashish/.nautilus/metafiles: No such file or directory

I'm off to get food. Later everyone!

ashishsony
i m not too experienced but i suppose it shuldnt be linked to nautilus.. but the file itself..??

12:26 AM
it's not linked to nautilus per se
nautilus stores metadata on the file at the above location.

ashishsony
may be a hash diff of an identical file different in only the notes could give us an idea if this info goes to file or not??

You sure you have saved a note against a file ? If so where is the file saved ?

ashishsony
yup....

ashishsony
its saved on the file system.. ext4

I mean the path to the file ?

ashishsony
12:28 AM
ummm say onthe desktop..

ashishsony
i used two copies of the same file.. then wrote a note to one.. and md5sums match for both!!

ashishsony
cant understand where that info goes??

like I said, its not saved anywhere in the file

ashishsony
hmmmm interesting

do a cd ~/.nautilus

ashishsony
12:31 AM
done

ashishsony
it has no listing at all....

ls -la

ashishsony
. and .. only

Hmm
lemme boot into my gnome session. give me few mins, will be back

12:49 AM
funny, I can't find it anywhere @ashishsony
found it @ashishsony
its in ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata
but parsing your notes will be almost impossible
@ashishsony

Does anyone know of a good alternative to Preview for scanning stuff on Mac OS X?

Cool, thank you.
Eh, I would rather find something free.
But thanks anyways

I've tried image capture too
I want something that can scan multi-page documents into a multi-page PDF, much like simple Scan on ubuntu can do.

SoftwareGeek
folks, anyone installed hotspotshield from anchorfree for private browsing?

:11686 wtf? :-)
reset is your friend...

:11700 hehe the question was too interesting to pass :)

:11703 I don't believe I speak the language your terminal is set to display ;-)

1:42 AM
:11705 it's fascinating, let's learn together :P

Q: How can I create a right click menu item to manipulate a junction point?

TomWijAs I am using a SSD but it is limited in size I want to be able to use junction points to remap files and directories to my HDD, this would work ideal if I could create a shell extension for it that does this. The ideal behavior would be to right click a directory or junction point and have an o...

Cawas
5:53 PM
:11766 as the first answered pointed, why not using soft links?

Because the question is about junction points?

Cawas
6:14 PM
ok nevermind.

Cawas
I hope it's not too troublesome to ask area51 question here, but can we request foreign language sites there? I can't find info on this.

Wil
This is annoying! I am busy working, but every 25-30 mins, I refresh Superuser and there are no new Windows questions unanswered... just about to answer the one about 64 bit CPUs as I thought it was new, and someone gave the answer I would about 20 minutes ago :( not happy!

This is annoying! I am busy working, but every 25-30 mins, I refresh Superuser and there are no new Windows questions unanswered... just about to answer the one but @Wil beat me to it! not happy!
:p

Wil
lol

Cawas
lol @Wil

6:21 PM
@Cawas: I think you can, they did it for English and for Russian.

Cawas
:11779 cool, so I'll just proceed with it =)

Wil
Is it just me or is there a lot more Linux \ Mac questions today!?

In the right side bar: 110x Windows, 140x Linux, maybe...
Although Windows-7 gets 138 BUT is more in the past, hmm...

3 hours later…
9:05 PM
:11708 Josh about that Notes in Gnome, Nautilus

9:32 PM
new router arrived!
dd-wrt installed on it fine.. gonna slot it in now as a replacement

good luck @JeffAtwood
and my regards from the wodka loving Lithuania

nice @JeffAtwood we need pics!
:11801 waves

and throughput statistics!

hello @Sathya
I survived yet another day in this god forsaken country

But I guess that would be more dependent on the throughput of the ISP connection.

9:43 PM
:11809 not on a LAN
wget http://<localIP> /dev/null

@IvoFlipse where you at?

Kaunas, Lithuania
as in somewhere in former USSR
really strange place
they let you eat pig cerebellum and stuff

@Sathya: Ah yeah, like that... :D

9:58 PM
yay! new router up and working.. plus wpa2 personal wireless confirmed
dd-wrt for the win!

Cawas
speaking of wifi sharing / security... haven't anyone tried fonera?

Cawas
I've always disliked closing my internet wifi, and this seems like such a great solution for that.

I was thinking, I should give my old router away.. doing so in the router room

10:22 PM
:11813 what the heck are you doing there?

Wil
10:44 PM
Finally a question I can answer today (although it is a little lame!)... no one get there before me!

10:55 PM
Does anyone know of a fan controller that can integrate and read the CPU temp?
I'm not talking about a software based solution like speed fan...

hardware? I know fans that have temp sensors that vary the voltage to the fan (Independently of software)

Ya something like this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4941667&CatId=501

Wil
@JeffAtwood Yeah, most do... @Kronos, there are three sorts of fans - dumb Molex ones which are just on all the time at full blast, smart Molex ones that again use the Molex 4 pin connector, but have a sensor and adjust based on heat and then there is the best ones which connect in to the motherboard... you should see 4 pin sockets labeled fan 1, fan 2 or case 1, case 2 e.t.c.

@Wil Pic didn't work dude
What I want is for a piece of hardware to connect to the motherboard and read temps (CPU, Harddrive, etc,.) and then use also the probes that generally come with them, and by using those have a control of fan speed
based off of temps

Wil
It was just from Google - typed motherboard fan connector and it was the second or third image
I don't think such thing exists - that piece of hardware you showed actually has its own sensors that you put in places..

11:07 PM
hmm yeah I think that image is referrer protected -- err.. image is a 404 even when entered directly

Is it possible to use one of those temp sensors and "splice" it to connect to motherboard?
How does the motherboard read CPU temp anyways?

@JeffAtwood thanks for this

@Sathya did you want the router? (see router room)

Wil
@Kronos - ehh - no, what would that achieve!...
@JeffAtwood ... I think Google just had the image cached, I can't even see it now when I click on it from the actual place it was at.

:11889 yes please!

11:12 PM
@Wil a more accurate reading of the CPU temp

:11874 Sentry 2 ?

Wil
@KronoS the most accurate reading will come from the CPU sensor which is directly under/in the socket itsel

drknexus
Hello.

Wil
Hi

IIRC the Sentry 2 has sensors which you can place under the relevant places ( eg: CPU Socket / RAM heatspreaders et al )
:11899 Hello

drknexus
11:14 PM
:11902 I've been poking around the internet but I haven't been able to find any systems integrators who are still providing machines with Windows XP pre-installed. Any suggestions as to where I might look?

:11903 I really doubt you can find any. Windows XP is not supported, right @Wil

drknexus
@Sathya: That is what I was afraid of. Unfortunate. We have old software which doesn't seem to play nice with Windows 7 and needs graphics card accelerations that do not seem to be available under Windows 7 XP mode

drknexus
MS's website says XP end of sale should be October 22nd, but I haven't been able to find any out there.

:11905 ah, that sucks. Have you tried running under VMWare or VirtualBox ?

Hey everyone

11:17 PM
where are you based @drknexus ? Maybe you can find some local integrators who are willing to provide XP
:11908 heya

I should have asked this yesterday... now I'm in a bind as I was supposed to have done this today, and I'm late for meeting friends for dinner!

Q: Transferring lots of messages between IMAP accounts

JoshI have to move many, many emails (over a thousand) from an old IMAP hosting provider to a new IMAP hosting provider. I know I can just set up the old and new accounts in Thunderbird and drag and drop, but it's very slow and keeps timing out. Is there a better, more automated way to copy all messa...

@josh via gmail ?

drknexus
I'm based out of Riverside, CA. I have to go through a PO system so a large integrator is easier to sell to accounting.

:11912 old IMAP => gmail => new iMAP
orrrr

:11913 Would that be easier/faster than Thunderbird?

drknexus
11:19 PM
@Sathya I hadn't tried that yet, I didn't know they would support graphics acceleration, I might have to look into that. Getting XP licenses would still be a bit rough I imagine.

:11917 definitely much faster than T'bird

@Sathya The sentry isn't exactly what I was looking for... I want to control the fans based off of the reading of the actual devices themselves... or does that really matter?

:11918 I'd venture into VMWare / VirtualBox. Perhaps get Windows XP over ebay ?

:11919 I'll try that now, thanks!

:11920 via sentry 2 also acts as fan controller

drknexus
11:21 PM
@Sathya Any guess as to which is likely to work better for passing along the graphics acceleration, VMWare or VirtualBox?

:11924 I'd say VMWare

@Sathya right but it gets its readings from outside sensors.... i want to be able to tap into sensors built into the devices and that that controlled by an outside source like the sentry 2

:11915 Looks like I can only download to gMail via POP

drknexus
@Sathya Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.

:11927 try this ?
:11918 also have a look - not sure if this will help you

11:28 PM
Hm, thanks @Sathya, I'll have a look
Well this might work @Sathya, but I don't have time to do it before I leave. Looks complicated. I'll try that tomorrow

:11935 I'll try to find alternatives and post an answer
@Josh see if this works ? yippiemove.com/step/1

Wil
sorry I was away...

:11926 sentry 2 has its own sensors,

Wil
:11903 for XP, best bet is to get any machine with a business version of Windows 7 such as Professional and then use your downgrade rights to install XP - or buy XP yourself
Many smaller/non national builders should be able to get it for you as well.
but, what actually is the problem with Windows 7, maybe someone here can help you.

@Sathya: That is what I was afraid of. Unfortunate. We have old software which doesn't seem to play nice with Windows 7 and needs graphics card accelerations that do not seem to be available under Windows 7 XP mode

Wil
11:34 PM
What is the actual problem though... MAny older software does work with a tiny bit of tweaking
such as XP compatibility (not XP mode), or just giving everyone permission over the programs folder etc.

@Sathya looks promising!

:11948 costs $15 though
this suits you best.

:11950 You know me well :-)

:11952 :D

That does look best. I'll implement that tomorrow as I am now beyond fashionably late :-)
But that would work for my company as well, so that's a great answer. Thanks!!

11:38 PM
sure, I'll fill in the answer with all 3 methods

Thanks. I gotta run, will accapt tomorrow!

:11957 have fun! 'nite!

drknexus
@Wil The problem is with some copy protection on OpenGL Performer. It wants to authenticate in an unauthorized way when installed on Windows 7.

drknexus
@Wil: So then the demo license won't run and the program terminates.

drknexus
@Wil Unfortunately the problem seems a bit more involved than swapping the compatibility modes (we tried that).

Wil
11:44 PM
... What is the copy protection it uses? It may ship with something, but some providers release updates that you can overwrite for it to work
or it could be as simple as changing permissions on a registry key... not this software specifically, but I have managed to get other stubborn software working
XP may be easiest solution, but I am happy to help you to get this work if you want.

drknexus
It uses FlexLM license keys.

drknexus
@Wil We'd be thrilled if we could get Performer 3.11 to work in Windows 7

drknexus
(Note, not even the current version runs in Windows 7)

drknexus
I could send you a link with the 3.11 installer if you wanted to give it a shot, otherwise the 3.22 installer is available from SGI if one digs deep enough.

Wil
If you can send me something - I will take a quick look... I can give you FTP? or if you can give me a link - either way

drknexus
11:48 PM
If you can give me FTP it would be faster.

drknexus
I don't have a very well configured server at this point.

Wil
can you email me - william@ezpcltd.com and I will reply quickly with the details.

@drknexus don't do it! @Wil is really a super spy for the UK! :P
2

Wil
LOL - I wish!
Mind you, the pay sucks...

ahhh... that's why you need to be a spy for the US
get whatever you want

drknexus
11:53 PM
The install sequence goes off without a hitch, by default it makes a Silicon Graphics folder in the start menu and an OpenGL Performer one.

drknexus
In there is a batch file, something like "Performer town.bat". On a windows XP system that will launch, ask where the license file is (c:\program files\silicon graphics\opengl performer\license.dat ~or something like that)

drknexus
then it will give a little demo driving around a town while a penguin flies overhead on a rocket and a zeppelin circles above. On windows 7 it crashes out.

Wil
Ok

Well fellas I'm outta here... time to go home. Peace!

Wil
:11977 How much do they pay? ... I looked in to it as well as a few other jobs, but the pay was really bad compared to private sector

11:56 PM
:11983 see ya!

Wil
:11983 Goodnight!

F1 2010 is out

Wil
:11980 Ok - did you get the email with details?
