6:00 AM
@rolfl
if (value != null && !values.contains(value)) values.add(value.getDigit());

becomes

if (value != null && !values.contains(value))
values.add(value.getDigit());

...
how bad is it?

One-liners are frowned apon .... but, it's also very, very configurable

Nah.. I like this Ctrl+F thingy :)

I would not stress about that, but, it will format everything in your Java-doc comments, your whitespace, etc.
Don't forget the Shift.

I like hover-doc in the comments!
Damn. I think I like this IDE.

There are a lot of 'tricks.. f3 is a nice one to open the source of a function....
Ctrl-Q to go back to the last place you changed code.
Ctrl-D to delete the line.

6:04 AM
Ah? My shortcut for that was Ctrl+Z :)
^^ go back to last change

Ctrl - / to 'comment' the current line (or the selected lines).

Home+ //

Hitting 'tab' or shift-tab when a line is selected will indent (or unindent) the line(s).'

Same in VS
I wouldn't expect any less
Works in Outlook, too ;)

yeah, the ones I like are, with a symbol at the cursor, is Alt-shift-R to rename that symbol (and it renames it everywhere it is used).
(not just current class).

6:07 AM
I'll need to get used to this Alt+Shift scheme

Inside a method's parameter section (whether the declaration or where it is called), you can Alt-shift-C and add parameters, change position, remove them, etc.).

Actually my current conceptual model of the IDE's keyboard shortcuts is a soup of Alt and Ctrl +Shift + [key] combos.

Another thing to add to the mix, is when there's a provlem, a hover over the problem will normally recommend a fix, and you can just select it.

yeah that's another great feature...
♫ A whole new world... ♫

next thing you know you'll like Java ... Hmmmm
competition....

6:28 AM
lol
like != master

OK< basic infrastructure in place .... can read a grid, write a grid, each row, column, and block know what they are.... next up, sleep.....
then, validate input, grid, and then brute-force....

Then, get smart about the brute-force.
But, now it's time for bed.
@retailcoder yu going to be OK?
(01:30 here).

Here too
I still have coffee

You also have twins, right?
They cancel each other out.

6:33 AM
Yup. 2 in April!
^^ huh?

twins cancel out coffee ... (not each other)....
2

oh!

(... and I saw that .... ).

hey I'm on page 1!
@rolfl row 2:

Hmmmm I could make row 1 in 2 days .... if there are questions I can answer, and voters to upvote them....

6:42 AM
:)
I dare you!

9-days-at-rep-max, with max-max = 265 in one day.

ouch!

Sorry, 260... not 265. But, with a couple of 220 days .....
Actually, I'm backing off, need to do things, but asking questons will help my cause.
Also, I looked hard at the generalist badge....

And?

That will take a lot of effort.
I only have 10 of the 20 I need.

6:45 AM
Badges are not pokemons :p
2
Besides it's more like "I already have 10 of the 20 I need".

I am minumum 87 upvotes away, in 10 fields....
That's assuming the votes are on answers with the exact right tag combinations.

10 top-40 fields :)
Choose your battles they say!

This is where I have some votes in top-40 tags that I don't aready have 15 or more:
I can probably hit the zombies for sql, mysql, and perhaps android.
I need 7 more after that.... ;-)

ooh @Simon's got company!

oop, readability, and design have a lot of old questions, nothing new has come through on those (that I recall).
Otherwise I wil have to learn, or fake php and javascript ... ;-)

6:51 AM
some tags are "legacy" tags from the genesis of the site.

My cobol stuff does not help.
2
Is it sad that I have put it in a spreadsheet?
2

lol
^^ rethoric right?

Yeah.... I will likely get silver Java badge before I get generalist.
I hope to get enlightened as well.

@rolfl and doesn't that make sense?

yeah.
I think it's a toss-up as to whether my first gold will be fanatic or electorate.
If I wanted to, I could vote more....

6:56 AM
^^ good idea :)

Right, tata.
... oh, you would think I could get more rep on android.... I do have code in it since jelly-bean!

'night, and thanks!

Q: Python sudoku solver using simple deductions and brute-force guessing

200_successHere's my attempt at Weekend Challenge #3. Key characteristics of this Python entry are: The strategy is to alternate between "autocomplete" (making simple deductions such as naked singles and hidden singles) and recursive guessing. The puzzle state is stored in a Sudoku object, which has a mu...

@rolfl I didn't know you knew Android
@retailcoder For quickly seeing the Javadoc of something or seeing what error/warning there is, instead of hovering over the item with the mouse you can use F2.
(removed)

1:29 PM
Installing Visual Studio isn't exactly fast... @retailcoder will be finished with his Java project before I've even installed the thing...
What on earth am I supposed to do with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client?
Setup Successful!
All specified components have been installed successfully.
Product key? Bah. For evaluation purposes only? Yes yes...
Ah, I'm in! I think...
oh, it has a Windows 8 feel to it
Oops, accidentally started a Visual Basic project. No thanks.
@retailcoder Btw, just realized... Ctrl + PageUp and Ctrl + PageDown in Eclipse... nomnomnomnom
(switch current editing file)
Ctrl + Shift + S seems to be the only keyboard shortcut that behaves the same

2:02 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg my sincerest sympathies

@rolfl Thanks. I really could use them.
I hope @retailcoder appears soon so that he can teach me some key shortcuts
I'm looking at some C# questions here just to learn the syntax

I considered trying a new language for this one, but, I also want to involve my son, and I only need one major learning curve.

yeah
I might use two languages for this one, just to get the satisfaction of using Eclipse again :)
I'm quite surprised to see that there already is a submission for this week's challenge

1 hour later…
3:27 PM
@retailcoder HELP! HELP!

..... Java ..... Java ......Java ...... !

Ooooh, I'm jealous of you right now, @rolfl
Oh crap
Perhaps I should initialize the tiles FIRST, before trying to use them!
This explains a lot
Self Note: C# doesn't output null as a string, it only outputs an empty string.

It's oh... so quiet...

yea, now you wrecked it ;-)

Someone had to
How is your solver going?

I have the infrastructure and validation in place.... starting to work on strategy.... and you?
(I spent a long time working on the fancy box-style characters for the grid layout).

Let's see if this works....

@rolfl I need a harder Sudoku

Good!

I haven't implemented any advanced techniques but I can still solve a 9x9
How's it going for you?

Been watching TV, and work-working ... ;-)
Did you brute-force the one in the description?

Can you send me a really hard puzzle, @rolfl? Like the original for the partially solved one you used above
