@TRiG Oh. Thanks.

12 hours later…
Jin
4:56 PM
hi

5:07 PM
@Jin Heya!
New news for us?

Jin
@El'endiaStarman i'm getting very close to finishing up the Meta site css conversion. we may launch today :)

@Jin Awesome! :D

Jin
I'm doing something special for the Meta theme too, i'm using a different image for the Meta footer.

Oooh, interesting.

Jin
to be honest, there were several i wanted to use on the main site, but it's hard to settle on one, and unfortunately i could only use one.
as you know, Meta site theme is more or less a desaturated version of the main site. but sometimes I do special stuff on Meta, for things I wanted to do on the main site but can't.
^ that's the footer image i'm using on meta. (meta is black/white)

5:11 PM
@Jin Huh, interesting choice. Any particular reasoning behind it?

Jin
@El'endiaStarman i wanted to use photos to reflect the beauty of nature, and to give a calming feeling. I think ocean is a good one to use. Also, this particular photo has foot prints on it
it subtlety gives a nod to the "Footprints in the Sand" poem.

@Jin I thought of the same, actually!

Jin
(I know it's not from the Bible, but it's one Christian poem I really loved)

5:32 PM
@Jin I like it

Jin
@waxeagle hi!
@waxeagle i meant to ask you, do you play board and card games?

@Jin hiya, just got back from lunch :). Glad to hear the launch might be as soon as today
@Jin yes, though not as often as I'd like

Jin
@waxeagle my next site design is the board and card games site. I posted a brainstorming post on their meta last night. feel free to post your ideas.

@Jin cool. I'm not active over there (though I'd really like to be). But I'll definitely contribute if I think of anything

Jin
@waxeagle thanks. I love boardgames, but I mostly just play Catan and Dominion

5:37 PM
@Jin same boat here if you throw some munchkin in
we have an extensive collection, but since we're now old married farts with kids our gaming is mostly limited to our weekly D&D game

5:59 PM
trying to write something coherent about B&CG design is hard. Their spectrum is super broad...Go -> Chess -> Playing cards -> Monopoly -> Katan -> MT:G -> Dominion...

Jin
6:10 PM
@waxeagle agreed. especially that site is very MTG heavy. reminds me of RPG.se with D&D

@Jin yep, you've got to make the MT:G folks feel as welcome as possible, but can't drive off the rest with a magic heavy design

Jin
@waxeagle that's the hard part about designing, hard to please everyone! :)
my mantra is, from the past 18years of doing design is that if i try to please everyone, i end up pleasing no one :)

@Jin yes. I gave an answer on the B&CG thread, not sure if it's worth anything, but my early card game experience largely came from sitting in front of a Hoyle card games manual
@Jin I feel this pain. I don't to design, but it's the same story with our web app

Jin
i think we're on schedule to launch today!
4
most likely around 4pm EST

@Jin awesome sauce

6:15 PM
@Jin Sweet!

Jin
@waxeagle what I typically do post-launch is fix css related bugs asap. as for design change requests, i normally let it sit for a few days

@Jin fine by me. That lets folks talk about it

Jin
because in my experience, it takes some people some time to get used to the new look. but I'll make design tweaks if the community feels strongly about certain parts.
the good thing about our design process is that, the site can be constantly updated, both backend programming or front end design. so it's not a "launch 'n forget" type of thing :)

@Jin sounds good to me.
@Jin yes. My experience has been that you guys are pretty responsive on this kind of stuff.
though the badges on RPG still aren't quite right :)

Jin
@waxeagle i'm behind on css bug fixing on our sites. once Christianity.se launches, i plan to spend a few full days doing nothing but bug fixes

2 hours later…
8:13 PM
Refreshing repeatedly

Me too! :P

Jin
@Ullallulloo :) we're having a dev meeting right now. after that we'll launch.
meanwhile, i'm trying to fix this stubborn cssss bug

Jin
8:44 PM
we're prepping!

@Jin Woo!

Jin
@El'endiaStarman the rest is in our dev's hands now! i'm excited for you guys, congrats for being an awesome community

@Jin Yay! And thanks. :)

Jin
i'll be on standby all week and next to fix css related bugs post launch... i have yet to have a "flawless bug free" launch

9:14 PM
grr I have to drive home now...see y'all after dinner

@waxeagle At least you know it'll be up when you get back! Seeya!

@El'endiaStarman yep

9:45 PM
It's up!
2

Jin
yay! sorry about the delay today. run later than i expected.

Wow, I REALLY like that Meta footer. It works so well in black and white.

Jin
yeah
it didn't look as nice as a main site image in full color

Q: New design launched

JinAs you can see the new design just went live, which means this site has been officially launched! Congratulations! Thank you for being an awesome community! If you're still seeing the old favicons, please load the following urls and do a hard browser refresh. Main site favicon Meta site favico...

I checked the 404 image on a whim and bust out laughing. That was definitely a great choice. :P

Jin
9:52 PM
yeah, great suggestions from the community

Hey @Jin, can you take a look at the Community Bulletin text? It's a bit small and hard to read.

Jin
@El'endiaStarman sure.

10:24 PM
@Jin The favicons aren't refreshing.

Jin
@Ullallulloo it's server side cached. we're about to purge CDN

The site's using cdn.sstatic.net/christianity/img/favicon.ico, which is the old one.
oh, okay
Also, the favicon for meta isn't grayscale.
The apple-touch-icon is though.

Jin
@Ullallulloo yeah i pushed a fix for the meta favicon. but we have to purge cdn caching first
even after purging, chrome is notorious for caching old favicons on the client side.

@Jin Okay, you seem to have this all under control. :P

Jin
@Ullallulloo hehe. every time we launch a site, it feels like Houston Command Center here.

10:46 PM
Yep, it's working now. :)

11:01 PM
Hallelujah!

Q: Badge number is misaligned with badge icon

Sklivvz See above: the "1" refers to the silver badges, but it's closer to the bronze badges. The larger spacing should be after the number and not before.

11:19 PM
@Jin Much better now. Thanks!
(Also, I should've pointed this out earlier, but users' names in the Users tab suffer from the same problem.)

Jin
@El'endiaStarman np. our next production build will be after midnight. so if i see anything else css related i'll push the fixes to dev server

@Jin the top bar seems kinda tall in Chrome, is that intentional?

Jin
@waxeagle yes. but now looking at it on live, i may shorten it a bit

@Jin did you end up toning the header down just a touch? I looks a bit less glaring now that it's live

Jin
@waxeagle yeah

11:28 PM
thanks. It looks great. I like it and @El'endiaStarman is right. The footer for meta is great

Jin
@waxeagle i had to check it on several monitors against different gamma settings.

@Jin I can imagine. I've got an identical pair sitting on my desk at work and they don't agree on certain things.
I like the subtle texture in the background too

Jin
@waxeagle i debated on if i should change the badge icon(fish), i couldn't come up with a better alternative. i think the simplistic shape of the fish fits that small size well.

@Jin I think I agree. Overall a good job on a nigh impossible task :). I think this will grow on us quite nicely even if it's not exactly what we want.

Jin
^ that was suggested, but it won't be recognizable at that small size

11:35 PM
@Jin no it wouldn't be

Jin
@waxeagle i'm always open to change design details of course. I think after using the new site for a week, you'll have a better idea on what you really like and what really doesn't work out.

@Jin definitely.

Jin
@El'endiaStarman i'm concerned about the legibility at that small size. also, is Triquetra widely accepted?
@El'endiaStarman I like its design, very Celtic

@Jin Lemme try it and see if it'd work.
The top one is about 15 pixels high, which is about how tall the current fish badges are. The bottom one is about 20 pixels high.
