@LeeWoofenden The romances and the chansons du geste of the 12th-14th centuries were stories written for, and either told or sung to, the wealthy classes in France and elsewhere. It wasn't necessarily intended, in terms of its audience, for the great unwashed. (An interesting modern parallel is the 20th century soap opera, to include Dallas and Dynasty, which TV genre I always describe as "rich people with problems")
@LeeWoofenden There nothing quite so pernicious as an idea, however; you may be amused that the carrying forward of the aura of chivalry by authors like Sir Walter Scott had an impact on 19th century America. See "Ivanhoe, the book that doomed the Confederacy" as a topic.
One among many articles pondering that linkage is here.
On the topic at hand, which had to do with "maleness" and "femaleness" I think it boils down to this line by (Dr Evil to his Mini Me) "you complete me." when a man say to a woman, and a woman says to a man "you complete me" the synergy happens: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. We becomes greater than me.

@KorvinStarmast Which, would you agree, stands in contrast to the idea that men and woman are the same on the inside?
