@fredsbend: I'm not entirely sure what to do with this question. I would really like to lock it as having historical significance, and in fact, looking at the edit history, I did do that a month ago, but neglected to make the lock permanent. Now that you're editing the question, I can't help but wonder if you think it can be salvaged.

Q: What is the biblical basis to claim that masturbation is a sin?

Jonathon ByrdThere's definitely two sides to this coin, some people say that masturbation is not a sin that leads to death, others say that it's a sin because Jesus commands us to deny the desires of our flesh. So my question to you, is multi-faceted: What biblical basis for claiming that masturbation is a s...

@El'endiaStarman it's properly scoped, but it's a difficult question and the accepted answer doesn't actually address the question as well as I'd like to see an accepted answer address this difficult of an issue
01:29
@waxeagle Well, there's not much we can do about the accepted answer. The original poster hasn't been seen for over a year.
01:54
@El'endiaStarman Well, I'm never in favor of closing questions because they are a difficult subject. I'm certainly in favor of keeping as high a bar as possible on it to answer, which is unfortunately only 10 rep.
@fredsbend So, it would seem to me that you and @waxeagle are in favor of it being reopened? 'cause I'm willing to do that if both of you want it open.
I think the edit I made puts it well within a question type that the community has allowed many times. That is the Biblical basis type. Most Christians do call it a sin, so we should suspect there is some Biblical Basis.
@El'endiaStarman Yes, I'm in favor of a reopen.
It is to bad the OP hasn't been back for a year.

@fredsbend IIRC he left when we instituted the doctrinal/denominational scoping changes
@waxeagle I think that's about right.
02:25
@fredsbend Alright, it's been reopened.
@waxeagle I believe doctrinal scoping is better than denominational scoping.
Sometimes, people from the same denomination, and even from the same church, may have widely different opinions.
@waxeagle The fact that the doctrinal/denominational scoping has been instituted and the fact that that guy has left may imply that that guy left because he disagreed with the new rule. After all, asking whether masturbation is a sin counts as a truth question.
Anyway, I recently read this article. Chen, Yuh-Jia, and Thomas Tang. "The Bright And Dark Sides Of Religiosity Among University Students: Do Gender, College Major, And Income Matter?." Journal Of Business Ethics 115.3 (2013): 531-553. Business Source Complete. Web. 4 July 2014.
@Anonymous agreed. But a denomination is often a shorthand for a set of doctrines
@Anonymous that would be the implication, yes.
@waxeagle What are your attitudes toward the PCUSA then?
I was thinking of Mean Girls, which then led me to news articles that discussed Mean Girls in real life, which then made me think about Christian Mean Girls, which then made me think about religion and ethical decision-making, which led me to the Chen, et al. article.

@Anonymous WasthereeveranElisha? is a bot feed from Skeptics posts with Christianity related themes - it's not going to answer your question.
@bruisedreed I know that. But I needed to "reply" to something to make my own post sound coherent.

@fredsbend good stuff. Nothing leads to meta-secular 'space' - it's an abstract concept I'm 'searching for' in that blog, so to speak
@fredsbend the issue is the very idea that secular and sacred constitute two realms
it's an artificial distinction
but my contention is that modern religion now takes this space as a given, has played into and allowed itself to be relegated to only 'sacred / non-secular' space, and now has all but been subsumed in secular space
but in reality, there are no such spaces
so meta-secular is somewhat of an attempt to 'discuss the ineffable' - both a concept and discussion of God himself and his interactions with creation
the premise of the blog is tautological on purpose ;)
". . . discussing the ineffable at the intersection of philosophy, theology, psychology, linguistics, and. . . . "

Q: Good questions with bad answers

AndrewI've been browsing some questions this afternoon that have me a bit disappointed. It appears that they are acceptable questions per se, but they share the following characteristics: They are at least six months old They OP has selected a preferred answer. All of very nearly all of the answers l...
