5:06 PM
it's the home stretch!
last hour!

quick! pick up the toys and get the vacuum out!

lol

@waxeagle can you dust furniture?

@a_hardin lol...

I'll clean out the sink and sweep the kitchen

5:11 PM
You realize that the switch to public beta isn't timed, right? Someone hits a switch.

@HedgeMage Is it going to get hit on time? or will there be a delay for some reason?

@waxeagle I have no idea. I haven't asked.
Usually it's sometime on the correct afternoon, but as I said, it's not on a timer.

@HedgeMage gotcha.

how will we know when it's public?

check area 51
or
your privileges

5:16 PM
mod tools, I barely knew you

I just load up an incognito Chromium window and refresh occasionally

@CRoss well of course. instruments of destruction are a global fascination.

@a_hardin one hour to public beta
6
Christianitychristianity.stackexchange.com

Currently in private beta.

You realize that the switch to public beta isn't timed, right? Someone hits a switch.

@HedgeMage You still use Chromium?

5:19 PM
@waxeagle I imagine that's the case

5 mins ago, by HedgeMage
Usually it's sometime on the correct afternoon, but as I said, it's not on a timer.

hmm
you guys think I can get up to 500 rep before it goes online?

I really am going to have to ban myself from Christianity.SE after today

all it needs is a good question, and i've been asking a lot of those
also, are there any live stats like the Area 51 stats for the active SE sites?

@a_hardin I think @HedgeMage can help you with that if you want :)

5:21 PM
@Purmou I have three different web browsers open... it's in the collection :)

i mean ban myself while at work :)

@Purmou area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/11655/christianity gives you some stats, though they aren't exactly live.

@waxeagle I often wonder if that's part of our sinful nature, or part of our nature period

I think you might be able to hit 500 @Purmou

...
ya'll are just so nice

5:25 PM
@CRoss that's a good question.

I often ponder when violence is appropriate for a Christian, but unfortunately the New Testament is largely silent, and a little contradictory on the matter

@CRoss agreed. Its a strange dichotomy, I assume that violence is a product of the fall. However, at times violence is necessary for defense, but the question of what level is appropriate is a good one. Military service is questioned by some sects and supported by others...

@waxeagle yes indeed. Based on Jesus's interaction with military men in Judea (occupation forces no less), I would say it's not inherently sinful

@CRoss exactly. Plus depending on your local reqs it could be rendering unto Cesar what is Cesar's

@waxeagle indeed
but the issue of self defense, and even defending others is less clear
my personal conviction is that failing to defend my family is in no way love, but that's not explicitly stated anywhere

5:33 PM
Does anyone think Christianity.SE going live will help the Biblical Hermeneutics reach beta?
189
Biblical Hermeneutics

Proposed Q&A site for professors, theologians, authors, and anybody else interested in an exegetical understanding of the meaning and proper application of the Christian scriptures.

Currently in commitment.

> But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

@CRoss Right there with you on that one.
@CRoss I think one of the things men are called to provide is an aspect of safety and defense.
but that could probably be debated

@waxeagle I'm sure that it will be when we migrate this to the appropriate room :-)

@CRoss go for it :)...

16 messages moved from The Game Table
@a_hardin likely the reverse ...

5:39 PM
ah, now i see how that conversation seemed to appear out of nowhere around me :P

@a_hardin lol @CRoss and I were discussing it and it quickly became off topic for our usual room...
Comments, debate and discourse welcome :P

I'll be back in a bit.

@HedgeMage we'll keep the lights on

Q: If the Ten Commandments say “thou shalt not kill” how can a Christian fight in a war?

compmanIf the Ten Commandments say “thou shalt not kill” how can a Christian fight in a war? (question from the commitment phase)

@a_hardin How did this guy get 10 upvotes for a question that he just copied and pasted from the definition with none of his own words?

5:44 PM
@a_hardin That's an interesting interpretation of Luke 22:36 @JonathonByrd

@waxeagle I guess they were upvoting the question itself... He just happened to get the windfall
like i did on mathematics.SE

@a_hardin I tried to get him to expand, but he refused. I want to expand but I'm sort of refusing on principal at this point...

If you read it in light of 37-38
> For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors.' For what is written about me has its fulfillment." And they said, "Look, Lord, here are two swords." And he said to them, "It is enough."

keep reading too.
its almost like he asked them to have swords just so he had the opportunity to heal the guy's ear

@waxeagle I think that's it exactly. To say that He was giving Himself up by choice, not because He was overpowered or unprepared.

6:07 PM
Can I get some prayer? Somebody stole a 200k dollar piece of software from me this week.

Oh my, yes... do you know who stole it? Are you out 200k?

If I get sued I'll be out 200k.
yes I know who stole it

report them for piracy
but out of curiosity, did you actually purchase that?

@Purmou Haha, no I built it

oh, nice, lol

6:19 PM
@JonathonByrd we've been in the position where we thought we may be sued. We were near the end of a large project and the customer changed their mind. What saved us was a large stack of documentation showing we were delivering what was asked for.

@a_hardin what industry are you in?
curious

I am a software developer. The customer was a public utility

what company do you work for?
freelance?
can't imagine that job as a freelancer :)

@a_hardin those are lots of fun :)....my company is an engineering firm that does work mostly for utilities :)...

tag wiki for
"Ten laws inscribed upon stone tablets by God atop Mount Sinai, which Moses presented to his followers."

6:22 PM
I work for a small company

what do you guys think?

When I started we were mostly process control type stuff and did a lot of process stuff for the local sewer and water utility
@waxeagle we've worked with a lot of engineering firms... not something I'd enjoy doing
right now i'm actually subcontracted to a project with Eli Lilly, which is a lot less stressful

@a_hardin I work on the corporate side...our company runs on an internal web app that my boss wrote, we maintain and develop it

but we're looking to expand into project management consulting and tools... mostly based on our experience working on projects with the utility and other firms and a partnership we're developing with some PM professionals in INdy
@Purmou How much is allowed in the tag wiki? can you actually include the commandments or at least references to the verses?

@a_hardin I'd imagine he could. Probably the whole commandments in the actual wiki part

6:30 PM
29 minutes! if the button gets pushed :P

as much as is allowed in a comment is allowed in the excerpt part
500 characters i think
but yes i'll put all ten commandments and links to the bible verse[s] in the full tag wiki
but is "Ten laws inscribed upon stone tablets by God atop Mount Sinai, which Moses presented to his followers." okay for the excerpt?

Q: What symbols have represent Christianity through the years?

C. RossToday the cross is the primary icon of Christianity, but I'm aware of a few others, such as the Ichthys. What symbols have represented the faith through the centuries?

i'm not so sure that that's going to work to well as it's currently written

@a_hardin lol

6:49 PM
@Purmou I think it sounds okay
It can always be edited by others if they think of a change

7:16 PM
sound board question, how long should I wait after posting my own answer to my own question before I accept?

I'd actually give it a day or 2 just to see if something you like better comes up

@a_hardin yeah, I've given it a day, probably gonna give it a day of public just to see...

Since there's no gain or loss for accepting your own.

@waxeagle I usually wait a week on my own questions

Yeah, accepting your answer could kill any chance of someone improving it

7:19 PM
@NathanWheeler seems reasonable
@a_hardin this is very true.

@waxeagle what's the question? I'll go answer it better :P

Here's a good post on reddit that applies here

5
Q: What is the Biblical basis for Irresistible Grace?

wax eagleCalvin, among his other points, includes the point that when we are saved, we are irresistibly drawn to God and that there is nothing we can do to prevent this or cause this. What is the Biblical basis for this claim?

have a ball!
@a_hardin no reddit for me :(

@waxeagle Haha, not before it reaches the top of the list in votes

@JonathonByrd the only other answer on that q has a -1 :)

7:23 PM
@waxeagle looks like you won by default lol

@Richard A tardy (on my part) but resounding welcome :)

@JonathonByrd I'd love a better answer...

@waxeagle I don't know but I saw that too, esp since our staff overloards hand helped close it. That should be brought up on meta before voting to re-open, and now probably should before we re-vote to close.

@Caleb I just hate seeing 5 close votes cast (hard to get other places). And then seeing it reopen with out any kind of edit is just really sad to me.

@waxeagle It's 2 Timothy 2:23-26 biblegateway.com/passage/…

7:29 PM
@a_hardin excellent passage. Good guideline to use in our discussions and debates

so
it's incredibly easy to make a bible verse tooltip
After I'm done with this tag wiki I'll make an example

Hey guys, this might be off topic, but when do you think is the best time to accept an answer? How long? Why have you guys not accepted all your answers?

@dleyva3 wait at least 24 hours

i've only accepted 3, i think

I haven't accepted most of mine because I don't like the answers yet :)

7:35 PM
Yeah, I think it'll be hard to accept answers for some questions on here. My biggest problem is when there are 2 good answers.

I usually give it a couple of days before I accept, and only if I feel one of the answers really lays the question to rest.

@a_hardin same here

on SO, i'd just accept the first good answer, but here first doesn't seem to be a good way to weigh them

@a_hardin you can always wait for a better one :)

of course, if i like a couple, i feel okay waiting a while and then accepting the one with the most votes
No hurry

7:37 PM
@waxeagle Should we bring it up on meta? Not just the post but the practice...

@Caleb Probably not a bad idea. Basically if your Q got closed it got closed for a reason. Fix it before you vote to reopen

@dleyva3 No I'm at like 33% ... and waiting.
Some of them don't have answers I would accept so eventually I'l have to bounty them, beg in here, or write my own.

@Caleb I think it should be.

Some of them have good answers, but something else came to mind....
I didn't want to check them off as answered too soon before alternate viewpoints got well represented just because the answer I was expecting to see came along.
I realize accepts can be changed, but I think that's bad form and I really don't want to seem like I was trying to railroad a direction without giving a chance.

I agree

7:42 PM
300 questions :)

Wow...I don't think most sites do that in private :) Certainly Gardening didn't

Now can we we attract more experts than trolls during beta?

@Caleb thats a good question. Everyone ask your pastor to come participate :).

my pastor doesn't know how to use a computer
:P

@Purmou this should be fixed ASAP, teach him using Christianity.SE

7:44 PM
i'm sitting on /r/Christianity just waiting for the switch to public :P

though I have a good friend who's read the bible 6 times over
he should join on in

Brian Hardin?

give some answers

@Purmou So sit down with him a couple hours a week and answer some questions together. You can do the computer part and he can help show you how to research things. It would be a good learning experience for the both of you.

this is how I'm on my second time through the Bible dailyaudiobible.com

7:45 PM
I don't think you can help what you attract -- you can only help what you keep around. Lead by example, don't feed the trolls, vote, and flag, and things will be fine.
16

@HedgeMage starred for truth! :)

@Caleb It's something to consider. I'm very busy this school year, but I'll see if i can make time.

@HedgeMage pinned

:)
brb

so God told Moses to bring Aaron back up to mount sinai with him, right?
what happened of aaron after that?
i'm reading Exodus and can't find anything

7:47 PM
@HedgeMage is that an abuse of chat mod powers?

@Purmou you mean what happened to him on the mountain? or later in the bible?

@ahardin the former

bbl guys. gotta head home

@waxeagle seeya!

@waxeagle I was thinking of posing a challenge to my church to answer 5 questions and ask one over the course of the next month

7:49 PM
@waxeagle nah
@NathanWheeler I think that may send the wrong message -- sites this young actually need questions more than answers. The answers tend to come of their own accord when someone sees an interesting question -- getting the interesting questions is the hard part.

@ahardin so any knowledge of what happened to aaron? also, moses returned to the top of the mountain before God spoke the commandments, correct?

what verse are you starting at?

exodus 20:25

@NathanWheeler Not a bad idea esp if they have been properly equipped themselves. A good steady influx of good folks contributing would be awesome. I would do the same but the congregation I help shepherd doesn't speak English.

NIV
it's the last verse of 20
21 starts with "And then God spoke these words"

7:52 PM
@HedgeMage the idea would be to simply get them addicted to the question/answer format here

sorry, i'm starting with 19:25
20 starts with God speaking

I'm sure that those who really were interested would start asking some interesting questions

What in the world do you guys do for work that allows you to sit here on this chat all day? I'm self employed and cannot even find the time! lol

@JonathonByrd Haha. You know my situation already.

@JonathonByrd programmer

7:54 PM
I think. :P

@NathanWheeler well that makes three of us as programmers and purmou is jobless :) dang youth...

Our sprint ended yesterday... i'm waiting for others to catch up
tomorrow all the people in indy are going to a baseball game, so i'll probably be here, then, too

@a_hardin I know what you mean, I'm ready for private beta

after that i'll have to ban myself from here during the workday :P

7:56 PM
@a_hardin So Moses didn't receive the tablets until a bit later. God only spoke the commandments first?
and Aaron and the seventy elders went up, but not all the way up?

I believe what God spoke were specific laws and not the 10 commandments

@HedgeMage FLIP THE SWITCH
@HedgeMage WE READY!

NO NOT YET D:

@JonathonByrd I just pinged the team about it.... I'll let you know what I hear.

let me finish this ten commandments tag wiki

7:57 PM
@Dori Bring on them mormons!

@JonathonByrd and the Westboro Baptist Church ;)

@Purmou haha, you're work will never finish.

Yeah, Aaron, Nadab and Abihu and the 70 elders went part way up, but only Moses and Joshua went all the way
So, I'm betting "Plenty of time for Christianity.SE" shouldn't be a part of my sprint retrospective :)

The official word is that yes you guys will go public today, but not in the next few minutes. There's some stuff ahead of you.

wasn't Moses told he had to sacrifice his son?
Or was that Abraham for something else?
Forgive all the questions, as you know I haven't read the bible.
also, what's an easy way to gain 3 rep?
exactly 3 though

8:00 PM
have two edits approved, then give one downvote
why exactly 3?

i'm at an odd number of rep
and it's killing me
517
and if this tag wiki gets approved, i'll get 4
and it'll be 321
and that'll kill me even more
but i'll just downvote something

find an appropriate downvote

@a_hardin Or don't. Set out to accomplish something good and only downvote if you find a need to along the way to improve the quality of the site. Don't worry about your rep number, it's a moving target anyway.

my rep happens to be a multiple of 100 at the moment... i bet you'd like that @Purmou :P
@Caleb yeah

@ahardin indeed I would xD
@ahardin what is meant by "God of Israel"

8:05 PM
That was a common way to distinguish which god people are talking about. Back then there were a lot of gods.
the God of Israel is the one true God

8:21 PM
Congratulations guys we're LIVE in public beta!

weeeee

@Purmou lol
@Caleb Awesome
@Caleb They just hit the switch?

@JonathonByrd It looks like there is more than one switch to hit because it didn't happen all at once (area51 is still out of date) but the site itself switched from private to public beta templates.

templates?

@Caleb what templates are you looking at?

8:24 PM
@Caleb How can we tell?

@Purmou Look at it. The sidebar content on the home page for example is different.
And the privilege scale changed.

hmm... doesn't look any different to me

but christianity.stackexchange.com still takes to the login page
which says one more day of private beta

@a_hardin Like I said there seems to be more than one switch to hit, but it's being rolled over.

yea privileges didnt update for me

8:26 PM
maybe it's cacheing or something

@JonathonByrd My mod tools just went away in the middle of using them.

@Caleb nice

how much do you usually need for mod tools?

2k

8:27 PM
ah
lotsa people are awfully close
well

that doesn't list mod tools, but i believe it's 2k

Alright guys does anybody have an idea how to fix this question?

Q: How can I find out how "accurate" a specific Bible translation is?

Jürgen A. ErhardFrom a comment in this question, I'm curious: does a list exist with, say, Bible-translation ratings? I'm explicitly not asking for "which Bible translations are the most accurate", since I want to avoid a list question. ;D Of course, you could answer with one. :D

there's a lot of unnecessary stuff in that post

take out everything between the emoticons

@ahardin I thought the exact same thing

8:29 PM
Definitely moving from a trollish comment thread to a question was a good idea, but it needs a re-write to survive I think.
@a_hardin Done. What else?

@Caleb heh heh, at least he's learning

remove the emoticons too :P

maybe a how can i verify the accuracy of a bible translation?

better:

@Caleb we're really going to be in trouble when he gets to join the chat room

8:30 PM
"how can i measure the accuracy of a translation relative to an earlier version?"

Well first you have to know what you are comparing
others a translation is a translation

indeed, but you get the idea
i think this would be better suited asking the level of accuracy between two versions

I like the question title, though... i think it's a good question

@a_hardin I just re-wrote the whole thing. What do you guys think?

much better

8:33 PM
to judge this form myself.
i like it

/agree

@Flimzy welcome back!

@JonathonByrd I wasn't aware he couldn't.

so would "Learn hebrew and greek" be a bad answer? :P

Thanks
@Caleb: Thanks for removing the :D's from that question!

8:35 PM
Either way, we're bound to have trolls show up here. I hear their footsteps.

@Caleb you've got to have a certain level of rep. he was still in the one hundred range last time i looked

All together now, "We're not going to feed the trolls."

ahh, public for me, too!

/me feeds a troll

I have Site Stats now

8:36 PM
@ahardin me too :(

and no more tools

@JonathonByrd Huh. The public beta site I'm looking at states 20 rep to talk in chat. Was it more during private?

@Caleb psh, i didn't lose too many privileges

now my privileges jsut got updated
just lost my tools
@Caleb well, we're in trouble when he learns where chat is :)

so
why are some sites still in private beta?

8:39 PM
also, you don't have to login to read it anymore

there's one that's 13 days in

depends on content
i think christianity grew pretty fast so there wasn't a content problem
anyone know who our mods are now? outside of the SE employees

did pro-tem mods get picked?

probably not yet... or at least not modified

also, to anyone who can approve tag wikis, i just submitted one for

8:41 PM
i'm sure at least one of the people in chat now would have

could be @Caleb, @JonathonByrd, @Flimzy, or @MasonWheeler
maybe @Richard

@Purmou: I don't think anyone can any more
Except SE staff

it's still 900
i think
required rep
hmm

Well, it didn't show up on my list of things to approve, like it did yesterday

1500
you should be able to, flimzy
you're over 1600 now right?

8:43 PM
And when I try to edit the tag, it doesn't show any pending edits
shrug

@Flimzy Want a free badge?
Go to the faq and just click each link :P

That doesn't sound free to me!
It sounds like I have to earn it.

strange, I still have mod tools
@Purmou I just approved your tag wikis

@dancek thanks

@dancek: Where do you see those?

8:47 PM
obviously not now that they're approved

Maybe I lost my mod tools on the Matthew 20:16 principle.

@Flimzy He just has a version coming off of a different server, the changes haven't fully syncronized across their network yet.

yeah

ah

@Flimzy lol

8:48 PM
any bible verses saying that all children of God should encourage and spread Christianity?

@Caleb cdn

Well on the bright side, I can now see that I am in the top 4% contributors this week!

@Purmou mathew 28

@Purmou in effect, Matthew 28:18-20

If anyone wants to help promote Christianity.SE you can upvote this

8:50 PM
@JonathonByrd @dancek Are the disciples symbols for all children of God?
in those verses, I mean

@Purmou disciples is another name for the children of God, yes.

@Purmou I don't understand the question

@dancek Earlier verses show that in Matthew 28:18-20, he is talking specifically to the 11 disciples

oh cool, we just got share icons on questions too

@dancek So I was just curious of the 11 disciples are being used a symbol to represent all children of God, as in His followers

8:52 PM
@Purmou oh, I see
@Purmou there are also passages from Paul, let me dig some up

@dancek I actually ask because I'm answering your question

lol

@Purmou :D
@Purmou well don't quote me in the answer, that'd put me in an awkward position!

@dancek lol, i won't

And the "Beta" badges are rolling in.

8:56 PM
Woohoo! I got a beta badge
yea...

\o/ me too

finally a silver!

Anybody get the picture of a monkey in a room full of buttons is the engine behind this beast of a website?

only my second silver... guess the vote based badges get a lot easier with public betas

@a_hardin haha

8:58 PM
@dancek most likely

70 out of 183 users ... not bad. I wonder what the average private beta generates as far as "active" users according to their magic sauce.

sweet, my first silver badge ever

(and where the 14 users that committed but never even signed up are)

Oh I just got an email informing me that Christianity.SE is in public beta... how interesting.

The french proposal that just came out of private beta last week has 0. Huh.
