@nhinkle, just tell me what user name + email you want as a login for the blog
then you may go to bed ;P

the email on my profile would be fine - <redacted to prevent spam bots>. username nhinkle, same as on SU

great, just need to figure out what kind of account I have to set it too
I've got subscriber, editor, author and contributor :S
voila, it's done :)

great. i'll check that out tomorrow

sleep well :)

thanks! see you

Woo Hoo! Another peon to do @IvoFlipse bidding ;) Actually @nhinkle I'm really glad you're comin on... can use all the help we can get

@KronoS my presentation yesterday went very well, now I should have some time to look at pimping some of the blog posts a bit

@IvoFlipse :)
that makes me happy cuz this week I haven't been able to put as much time into it... normally I'd have a draft for next week's QoTW

well we need to pick something else, not sure if I like that HDD question
I love all the attention your SSD question got though!

2:06 PM
@IvoFlipse ya me too!!!! I'm hoping that we can get some more attention to the blog...

don't worry
we'll first get in some extra writers
and make sure your current posts get some extra love from more people, which should up the quality even more

esp since traffic isn't so high...

again don't worry, traffic will come when we get more questions
and make it more worth sharing

ya I'm happy to get more writers

but I'm already happy you laid a great foundation to get started

2:08 PM
me too... I'm glad I got this started...
@IvoFlipse did you add nhinkle... I don't see him on the list

yes, but he has to accept it first, he went to bed first

got it

Q: Best way to get data off a computer with no support for USB or ethernet?

Connor WA customer has a computer running Windows 98 (I know, cringe) and needs to take some data off the computer to put on a new laptop. I've tried using USB, but Windows 98 doesn't have USB storage drivers. So I thought I'd transfer the data via ethernet, but the computer doesn't have an ethernet por...

so for this question the only worth while answers I see are:
1. using an old modem
2. removing the hard drive
that's it... :(
Maybe my suggestion of a parallel port...
I also wonder if you could run a rj-45 (phone cable) to a cat-5....
@IvoFlipse can you (easily) network via a phone line?

2:26 PM
I hate network problems, so I wouldn't know
I hate how nobody takes the effort to explain how to do it exactly

Ya... same here

I'd simply not pick that question @KronoS, it just sucks

Ya I'm purusing through and seeing if there are other noteworthy questions... I posted one on the meta, but it's kinda of the same quality...

Q: Should I unmount a USB drive before unplugging it?

systempuntooutWhen you unplug an USB drive without unmounting, your OS warns you about how dreadful could be such operation for your devices (I'm on OSX). I usually follow the advice, unmounting before unplugging, but it happened many times (thousands) that, at the end of my tasks, I just unplugged (Hd storag...

we can also blog about a MSU question ;P

maybe this one from the SU contest?

Q: What is the origin of the hard drive light?

RCIXIn practically every computer I've had, there's always been a light to display hard drive activity. What's it's origin and original use?

or even this one...

2:33 PM
I'm afraid I messed up my 32gb drive by unplugging it without unmounting :$

@IvoFlipse I though about that too... also thought about doing a bit about the candidates... maybe having them post a "fun" tech story of thiers... take away from the attention of mod, and show that they are real people too...
@IvoFlipse oh SHOOT I have to send that back... like two weeks ago

you got a mail from them @KronoS?

ya they sent me an RMA number and told me to send it back...
I just haven't yet

the electric discharge question could do perhaps
I'm considering to buy one of those wrist things

IMO static really isn't an issue... I've never had probs at least...

2:36 PM
> we would still choose the SSD's every day of the week, and twice on Sunday.
me neither

@IvoFlipse is there anyway of seeing how many questions I've voted to close?
and also how many I've edited?
I'm gonna update my nom

I think data.se can figure it out

but that won't get the more recent data

43... wow that's not a lot

2:43 PM
I've closed 556
the last one is for editing
I'd blog about what you plan on doing so far with the SSDs
and you can mail that to Kingston, they might like the attention :)

5:50 PM
Oh hey guys, gonna work on the sites some tonight

6:03 PM
@ThomasMcDonald really? what are you going to do?

user30
6:17 PM
@KronoS Homepage (blogoverflow.com) and tidying things up

7:20 PM
@IvoFlipse, @nhinkle, @sathya I have posted a rough draft for next weeks QoTW... let me know what you think... and whether we should go with or change it to a different one and have this one be just a "featured" post

7:37 PM
let me have a look!

@KronoS, I'll take a look soon

@nhinkle @IvoFlipse cool thanks

@TomWij have we added you as an editor yet?
@ThomasMcDonald, I believe the default still says nofollow by default, just so you know

user30
@IvoFlipse Yeah, there's a nofollow filter somewhere

@ThomasMcDonald what does it take to get our own blog site... like server fault?

7:49 PM
@IvoFlipse: No, I've registered myself as I'm interested in helping after exams. But was planning to contact you later for that, feel free to assign me permissions but I won't use them yet...

user30
@IvoFlipse I'll take it out now

I would need your email and a preferred user name @TomWij

user30
@KronoS No idea, your guess is as good as mine.

user30
@IvoFlipse He's on, but I think it's set it to a global scope

user30
@TomWij Added.

user30
7:52 PM
Also @KronoS you did a bloody good job with getting th(at|ose) SSD!

@ThomasMcDonald thanks! :)

the bloody good job at everything @KronoS has been doing so far :)

I'm hoping that we'll get some good traffic from it... also that maybe some other venders will consider helping out :)

GPUs GPUs GPUs!!! :P
I want to test triple SLI!
oh darn, I don't have large enough monitors to stress that set up enough...

:)
We'll see what happens... I was also thinking @IvoFlipse that we could give away a drive later down the road as a contest from the blog

7:56 PM
@KronoS, I think we need to add some more information about what we plan to do with them
or rather, the why behind the what :)

@IvoFlipse hmm... i see... give them a taste of what they'll be seeing later down the road

user30
@KronoS Did you get a SU shirt along with your memory stick when you won the contest?

@ThomasMcDonald no :( I want one so bad

yeah, and also to show that we have some understanding as to why we think this is important
I hope we can get another contest or something to award more people with t-shirts

thinks "Becuase I freaking get an SSD!"

7:58 PM
btw give away a drive? you had to sent them back right?

my understanding is that they are donated....
just like @Sathya's drive
but I could be wrong
they weren't very clear, and haven't responded to my email... but Sathya said they came almost overnight... two day shipping

user30
I've been looking at getting an SSD for my MBP but it's just too expensive beyond 80GB.

no it's not @ThomasMcDonald, I got one for 140 euro, which is 120 Gb
and I got a Sticker!
My SSD is faster than your HDD

user30
I'd need at least 256GB to make it worthwhile, since that's what the current HDD is.

heck no you don't ;p

user30
8:02 PM
Yes I do. I'm considering getting a 1TB drive.

user30
But SSDs are so shiny. My buying rationale is unbeatable.

@ThomasMcDonald and they're blazing fast

why would you need 256 Gb?

user30
Because there's only 1 space for a drive in my laptop, and I currently have about 20GB free.

user30
I'm considering the best way to mount a network drive

8:05 PM
then you're out of luck

user30
I think the Intel 80GB SSD will probably be my boot drive when I next do a build

I currently have the SSD hybrid drive...
I want to compare results with that as well...

interesting :)
would you need to buy any software to do special testing?

user30
8:12 PM
I've seen this being used before

user30
Ahh, it's so long since I've been on hwbot
