@leslietownes Hah! I have a weighted glass I use for ice water, or Coke Zero, and often use a eco friendly straw; the think is, shai likes to bat at the straw, and can often have it flying to the floor. It didn't help that I was cracking up, LOL, almost in tears, laughing at his efforts. Now it's his current favorite game!! >:{

livvy likes the straws that our daughter uses. they are perfect cat toys.

@leslietownes Yes, indeed. A milk ring (plastic ring attached to cap, before opening), pennies, pencils, even soda caps, etc etc ... become cat toys.... my shai loves shoe strings, strings... He just loves the "newest toy" I find for him (little does he know I rotate the objects/toys.
When he was a kitten, he'd spend an hour in the bathtub with a milk or soda cap, playing "hockey" with it.

12:37 AM
Good morning @ParamanandSingh :-)

Hello @amWhy, checking some words already mentioned in the word game

@leslie How'd we miss SLUT!

@amWhy my name is not quid.. so the first ping did not work! :-)
I tried to come up with a good word, but did not manage so I left in silence.
Maybe LOOT

@quid That's right. I occasionally forget to withhold ... or .. immediately behind pings.
@quid Nice!
With an N we'd have NOODLES
OGLE

But OODLES is also a word

12:49 AM
@ParamanandSingh Indeed it is!

9 hours later…
10:26 AM
Hello!

6 hours later…
4:41 PM
Wow. Interesting: a user is using this image for their identicon:

@amWhy Is the content of the image I sent, true?

@soupless Oh, no, I'm sorry. There is a user in CURED right now, that made me think their identicon was the midsection of someone wearing a thong/bikini bottoms. But when enlaged (clicking on it) seems very different. I was having trouble including the small image here.

@amWhy It seems like we are in different pages right now.

@soupless They left. Sorry. But I do like your image above!
^^^@soupless But let me know when you see it, cuz I did not want to identify the user.

@amWhy No, I can see what you mean, but that is not what I first "saw".

4:57 PM
Clicking on the user's identicon, or even going to their profile, gives an entirely different impression, when enlarged. I remember a user with an identicon that looked like a candle, but only when enlarged, revealed it to be a rocket launch! :-)

I saw the orange thingy as something like centroids to the corners of a triangle

@soupless Indeed. That's sort of what I think it is meant to represent.
@leslie what do you immediately see, when you view the following: I plan to delete it while I can: You there?

i'm here, yes

Maybe the effects of geometric identicons made me think of it first

What do you take the identicon to mean (from the right).

5:02 PM
oooh. the flag. interesting.
wait, no.

that's the czech flag, i dunno about the other thing
looks like something associated with a gaming console? it looks very 'gamer' in color scheme

Maybe it was meant to be an image with misleading details?

@leslie that made me think their identicon was the midsection of someone wearing a thong/bikini bottoms. But when enlaged (clicking on it) seems very different.
@soupless Kind of like a Rorschach test?

hah! it's like staring into the letters

@leslietownes Good example!!!

5:07 PM
eww, don't link to that filth! :D

The Rorschach test is a psychological test in which subjects' perceptions of inkblots are recorded and then analyzed using psychological interpretation, complex algorithms, or both. Some psychologists use this test to examine a person's personality characteristics and emotional functioning. It has been employed to detect underlying thought disorder, especially in cases where patients are reluctant to describe their thinking processes openly. The test is named after its creator, Swiss psychologist Hermann Rorschach. The Rorschach can be thought of as a psychometric examination of pareidolia, the...

@leslietownes How'd you find that?

google reverse image search

@leslietownes Nice! That's precisely what I was referring to, the one used by the user is the dark gray with orange thong! ;D
Some how, at this point in time, the image of the link to Wikipedias Rorschach test, looks like an evil cat with snot falling from its nose, (or an incredibly long tongue drueling) to obstruct the wicked grin. But now that I think of it, it bears some resemblance to @robjohn's identicon.

5:16 PM
it's a thanksgiving turkey

@leslie I see, if one lays out flat after breaking the spine of a turkey or chicken
Poor turkey or chicken.
@leslietownes Are the white triangles garlic cloves? ;)
Upside down, it looks like a sad gremlin with a pointy head!

5:48 PM
i should ask my daughter what these images are.

Bottom-line, the Wikipedia image would make an excellent halloween mask!!
^^^^ Let people guess who you are!

hahah
supposed to have a high of 60F today. winter is here.

6:04 PM
@leslietownes poor baby ;P
For sympathy, you're going to have to turn to those with a lower latitude ;P

maybe not the day to post the picture of the palm trees near my house. OK. i get it.

It's all melted by now, but overnight, we had a rain/snow mix occluding windshield in the early am, and beautifying roof-tops. I'll send you pics from some snow frosted pine trees, when the time is write. You do know that pine trees exist?, right, @leslie? ;P
Anyone proficient in photo-shopping can merge a pine tree with a palm tree. That would be fun to see.

we have pine trees too! admittedly, not huge forests of them
the duck pond has a ton of pine trees
i miss where i grew up. our neighbor had a stand of redwoods in his backyard, and i could walk up to the hills and find small patches of redwood/pine forest.

@leslietownes That's wonderful!

i could also see the lights of san francisco up there on a clear night (35 miles away). it was a cool walk.

6:15 PM
@leslietownes It is really tragic, with what happened to some of the oldest trees in CA, with the fires in CA.

yeah, those fires were a complete disaster.
some of the land on my childhood walk burned, not last year but the year before. i haven't been back to see it since.

@leslietownes I have only a faint memory of them, from the visit of my family, minus my Dad, who had died earlier in the year. His sister and husband invited us out to CA.

it was very creepy. i visited just after one of the fires, and the drive from my mom's house to my dad's house went through land that had been burned over. everything was black and the trunks of some trees were still glowing. it was unrecognizable.

I understand. Old, strong trees have a presence which those growing up attach to, and families honor. So their losses entail a degree of grief. Whether by saws, or fire... but I imagine the imprint of seeing what is left after a massive fire, is probably most upsetting.

1 hour later…
7:30 PM
x OWES y, x SUED y. SUEDE. SWEDE,
Why are you following me everywhere, @Mast? You are free to join in our word search, but I do not need your supervision, certainly not here. Cheers! And in case you wish to join this site, the more the merrier!

I'm not following anyone anywhere. I'm a janitor and part of that involves keeping an eye on certain rooms. Then, when I suspend and re-open windows, they all load at more-or-less the same time.

@Mast I guess you've, by word of mouth, learned how fun this chatroom is. Welcome! All users here are wonderful users "socializing, having fun, sharing humor, ...".
@Mast Hah! Okay, do enjoy yourself.

I'm actually in a lot of rooms at any given time.
Many more if you count the transcripts I have open.
@amWhy I will, thanks :-)

@Mast That's wonderful. Note that I welcomed you here! We could use all the moderator help on site from those here as frequently as you are.
@Mast We're currently searching for words or anagrams formed by letters in WHO LET THE DOGS OUT. You'll need to scroll up and click "earlier posts" to see user's production on this site, but I'm okay if you want to post any words, four or more letters, you see in the search phrase (also pinned to right)

please ignore the filth in some of the anagrams. i disclaim all liability for what permuted letters say or do not say.

7:44 PM
Mixed with leisurely chit chat; so you are welcome to chat here too!
@leslietownes Indeed, it's all in the letters. We only report the permutations.

SHUTTLED GOTH OWE O?

@leslietownes We have ample participation in such permutations by math.se mods too. Never ever directed at anyone.
@Mast That's an excellent start!! Love it!

there's two H's. Goth hoes, remember?

Thanks, @leslie, I have a habit of passing over all but the first letters in articles! Fortunately, I was able to delete my careless comment!

it took me a while to realize there were three O's.

7:55 PM
HOUSEHOLD WET TOGUE

masterful

@Mast Indeed!
LUST THEE WOOL DOG

TEE GHOSTED OUTHOWL

@Mast Tip. We use all caps with bold face, to help track word searches/anagrams. But you're doing quite fine!!!!
Previously, this chatroom also hosts TGIF, via the Cafe and TAVERN. Before offering a beverage, @Mast, are you anywhere inside of 4 pm-2:00 am, your time? Else you must wait, unless you choose a non-tavern beverage!

8:15 PM
It's 21:15 here.

Your time?
Then you can order any beverage of your choice from the cafe and/or the tavern!
@Mast I'm a bartender and barista, mathematician, and logician. So name your beverage of choice.
@leslie, you must wait 3 hours and 38 minutes for the tavern, but you are welcome to the cafe!
FYI, @quid The cafe and tavern on the math.se is open and taking orders!

i'm staring at two cups of tea.

^^^Enjoy, @leslie!!
Help yourself to some biscuits with your tea, on the house, @leslie!
Note: I also supplied popcorn to the moderator election chatroom in the hour preceding the results! amWhy's Catering Service ;D
Are you thirst, @user726941 ?

8:46 PM
nope, thanks for the offer 🙏

@user726941 Thanks for stopping by!

:-)

8:59 PM
@user726941 And you are more than welcome to stay, too. If you read the chatroom description, this chatroom is sort of a "break room" from math.se, to, more or less, help keep us all sane, overall ;-)

9:15 PM
is that what it's supposed to do? it isn't working. :D

@leslietownes Hah! Well, it's an attempt, at least! ;D
@leslie How about "...to more or less keep us a bit more sane, than we would otherwise be?
... else, it helps us have a place to flout our insanity? ;P

now we're talking

@leslietownes :D
@leslie I really have to hand it to you, how easily you transition from your work, to a word search, to helping out in Mathematics chat. +2000
(Not to mention, livvie disruptions, or munchkin disruptions)

9:34 PM
i think it helps that my day job is very similar. most days i switch gears between a lot of somewhat unrelated tasks. horrible environment for doing something like math research, but OK for something that can be broken into bite sized chunks.

@leslietownes That makes sense.

some people aren't sincere. They ask you how are you every a period of time not for helping you solve your issues but they are just flippant.

My shai is back to (as he does in winter), camping out for chunks of the day in my bathroom (next to the furnace, with two heat vents (my bedroom has only one)). I tend to groom him there to, on a portion of the vanity. In winters, he jumps up and rests on the plush portion I've created for him, while howling to me to come and entertain him!
@Bohemianrelativist What's the context here? What just happened?

bohemian are you in some kind of academic program where an advisor is ignoring you? all too common, i'm afraid

real friends' conversation should be A: How are your things going? B: nothing fine. A: tell me what bother you. I will help you resolve your issues. Then a discussion of problem solving strategies start.
I feel solving human affairs is like solving scientific or math problems. It requires racking your brain.
@amWhy I think that Pakistan math student is really insincere.

9:45 PM
Sort of, but that sort of attention, involving "real friends" is usually a function of being a "real friend".
@Bohemianrelativist I consider a user on math.se a user on math.se. I have no clue who you are referring to, and I'm not fond of identifying folks by their geographic location.

every period he messages me how are your things going, but every time I told him my issues, he never follows up and never help me solve my issues, then left me alone, then messaged me again how are your things going, then the same scenarios repete.
come on, if he has no time to help with my issues, he doesn't really need to ask me how are things going every a period.

@Bohemianrelativist He doesn't sound like a genuine friend, then.

that really shows insincerity.

@Bohemianrelativist Indeed. I'm with you here. And yes, that is insincerity.

that's tough. it might be helpful to find friends who aren't in the same course of study. sometimes people are competitive, or self-conscious about displaying concern for anything.

9:49 PM
@amWhy a math student I knew when I live in university dorm.

olivia is making a huge racket right now, attacking one of her toys.

now I live in a hostel because I hate the social isolation of the university dorm.

I've face that on this site as well, and it feels horrible. But your having known them previously makes it even worse.

but he still messaged me every a period asking me how is everything going.

You've got supporters and friends here on this site.

9:53 PM
I don't know if he wants an answer fine, thank you. how are you? this is the conversation I learnt I just started to learn English.

@Bohemianrelativist Don't set yourself up for even more disappointment. Say something like "I'm doing great, but I don't have time to waste with such messages." You don't owe him a thank you. I'm thinking it might be best to not respond for awhile. Focus on what your interests and tasks are, and hang with supportive people. We're here!!!

I think A: how are you? B: fine, thank you. how are you? in the first lesson of my junior high school English book is for talking with people who aren't your real friends but just for greeting with probably a person you meet the first time.
@amWhy I have not responded him for a while after he asked me how are you last last and last time because he disappointed me so much last last last time, but after a period, he asked that question again, just several days ago.

@Bohemianrelativist Indeed. At that level, How are you? is insincere. It's more or less "Say "fine", and I can go my own way". And that's very sad. Because we all need people who ask "how's it going", sincerely. It may take time to know what is a "formality", and what is "sincere".

@amWhy I think it depends on if that a person is your real friend or just a stranger or a person you are not close to.

@Bohemianrelativist I still say, best not to disclose struggles. You can politely say, "Fine. Oops, gotta go".

10:02 PM
but I seldom ask a stranger how are you because I feel if I ask that question that means I am ready to help them if they are not fine, but I am not sure if I can help.

@Bohemianrelativist I agree. I sense you considered this person a friend. and that's why you feel betrayed. I'm not suggesting it will never work out. But I think you need to protect yourself.
@Bohemianrelativist That's where greeting, like "Hi," "Hello", with a smile in passing, or in text, as simple "Hi." will do.

someone in a hostel I lived one or two weeks ago cried in the morning sadly then spoke something very sadly loudly by a language I don't understand, I guess something went wrong to her, but nobody in the hostel bothered to ask her how are you.
@amWhy I haven't seen him in person for quite a period, but he always messaged me how are you every a certain period.

@Bohemianrelativist What I can say, is everything you say strikes me as you being a good person, and a good friend. What you describe is sad, indeed. Though languages can separate us, a human smile, or gesture, can let others know they are not alone.

It's not that I don't want to say I am fine. I keep having a ton of issues worrying me.

@Bohemianrelativist I understand. You need to find friends who will listen, and care. Friends you listen to and care about as well. Relationships/friendships are mutually supportive.

10:10 PM
I think in a hostel everyone can speak their own language to vent their sentiments because nobody else understands them.
@amWhy It's very difficult to find that kind of friend these days, not sure if it's due to the pandemic or people in this country are generally more indifferent.

But each of you know when what is said sounds sad and hurting, or angry, or any of many emotions. People can communicate care and concern without words. I'm not suggesting you become close friends with someone at the hostel.

@amWhy when I was in university dorm, I really suffered much by the social isolation. when I moved to hostel, I suddenly felt better, feeing not having so many people to talk for long, but I soon got tired of them because people in the hostel cannot be talked with my course, research issues at all.

@Bohemianrelativist All I'm saying, is not give up on all friendships, due to one person who seems not to have cared, for some time. Case in point: I care about your well-being. You strike me as sincere, and always have. I wouldn't have skipped my dinner chatting with you if I did not care or did not think you have many valid points. Sometimes what we seek doesn't come in the form we expect it to.

I had never been a university not having even a studying peer.
@amWhy it's your dinner time now? it's already 11:17 pm here.

Can you return to a different dorm, with a new roommate?

10:19 PM
@amWhy I cannot because I have stopped the studies here.
and I don't really want to have a roommate.

@Bohemianrelativist Well, I skipped lunch. It's 4:17 pm here (where I am). You must be in Europe somewhere?
@Bohemianrelativist I understand. I was always very distracted by roommates in my early undergraduate years.

I prefer to own a bedroom alone. I prefer to socialize with people in the lounge, but the university dorm completely has no public place outside personal rooms to sit down to talk.

i lived with roommates for one year, because of a financial aid package that basically required it. i never had roommates after that.

I am a PhD student and need a private room free from interference very much.

@Bohemianrelativist Yes, absolutely.

10:24 PM
@leslietownes I lived with 3 roommates in my MSc studies, but they tended not to interfere with me because I only stayed in dorm when I was sleeping or showing or doing laundry.
but last academic year all courses and seminars were conducted online, so roommate always stayed in dorm together with you and thus had many interferences.

that sounds terrible. i could see how it could completely ruin the experience.
i just realized that i lived with my wife for the last two years of grad school. but she doesn't count as a 'roommate' :)

but fortunately I didn't have a roommate since December, 2020.
but I became socially isolated because there was completely no way of making friends.
online activities can't make friends, and dorm has no public place to socialize.
it's like the university only let you make friends wiith your roommate.

10:45 PM
3 messages moved to Sandbox

11:07 PM
@Bohemianrelativist Unfortunately, "how are you" is no longer really a real question anymore, people just toss it around because everyone says it as a greeting, and it is pretty unfortunate. I do agree with everyone else here that that person really does not sound like a genuine friend in any way, and I think if it is better for your mental health that it's reasonable to just not respond to them anymore, if they don't actually care about anything you say.

It seems like the pandemic social isolation has affected you pretty significantly and having no way to publicly socialize is definitely

11:39 PM
@hyper-neutrino that person just asked for asking. When I told him my issues, he just said ok. Then when I said the answer I want is never ok, but techniques, strategies, etc. then he said: "I cannot help you with this issue." You need to sort it out on your own. I just think: "if you think I need sort it out myself, then why do you bother to ask how is everything going?"
Or In another scenario, I told him how worrisome my problem is, he said: "go to sleep. everything will be fine", then I asked him: "why do you think everything will fine?"
and it really turns out nothing is fine.
@hyper-neutrino actually here it has recovered traditional classes this semester, but I don't have many chances to enjoy.
@hyper-neutrino wow! you are also a physics scholar? I just saw your user name.
It is already 12:47 am now. good night.

@Bohemianrelativist Sleep well!

it's only -3 degrees Celsius outside. but there is no warm water from the basin and kitchen.
@amWhy thank you. hope so.
