@leslietownes That's my understanding as well. But there are a lot of people in this world whose sole access to the internet, is via their cell phones.
Some users report fewer problems with "desktop mode" on their cell phones. Nor do I understand deprecation of mobile apps by SE.
@leslietownes I do, as well, in both notebook form (littler lap tops), or a full screen laptop. I can also connect my 42 inch t.v. to the internet, using my notebook keyboard.
I'm not opposed, at all, to owning a desktop, I have one at my office on campus. But I like portability, e.g., in the class I'm teaching on campus, connecting my laptop to an overhead projector/screen is incredibly useful to me.
On the other hand my real gripe recently has been regarding use of mod tools. Most of them use modal dialogs and are really difficult to manage on a mobile
@amWhy: I think we can announce that phrase for tomorrow because it is going to be late for many users Ike you in USA
@ParamanandSingh More so for users in Europe, who should be asleep right now. I'm close to 7p.m., and @leslie's approaching 5:00 p.m. But no doubt, I'll wait until tomorrow.
@ParamanandSingh Good point. And I think, as a site mod, your request might help give impetus to improvements in design.
WHO LET THE DOGS OUT, compliments of @Paramanand: let the word search begin!! (Anagrams have already begun ;D)
^^^ NEW word search challenge: @leslie, @ParamanandSingh, @user21820, @Peter, @Koro, @soupless, @quid, @AlexanderGruber. But everyone is welcome to participate!!!
Anyone have any tips on how to get a song out of one's head??
@AlexanderGruber Hah! But there is some truth in that, I think. The songs that keep being performed in my head are always songs that moved me. So I think forcing myself to listen to a bad song, might do the trick!!
I think the worst case of a song that I could not get out of my head, was Hallelujah, written by Leonard Cohen, and sung by k.d.lang. Weeks and weeks replayed in my head.
@AlexanderGruber I love the songs I that replay in my head. I think it usually involves watching the song performed on you tube (visual-audio imprint). I linked my most recent plague above, in this chat; and I think watching it three times in two days, has something to do with it its hold on me.
@amWhy That's why the warning to turn down the volume in advance. It's quite a good rendering, but I don't know why he made it so loud in contrast to the start. =|
@Joseph This is a chatroom associated with Math.se. But you are more than welcome to join us. A room description is given below the name of the room, upper right corner.
Yeah, especially if others aren't quite clear on the meaning, immediately. E.g., on math.meta, if I hear an idea I'm not fond of, I can say "more stodge from so-and-so". ... ;D I'm joking (sort of)!
We can also make a list of the most stodgy users on site, or colleagues in one's workplace, or department, etc.!!!
e.g. sometimes people will ask a question and there's some routine solution that maybe involves a bit of calculation, or general machinery. and you give it and people don't want to see it, because they want to see a 'clever' solution.
sometimes people want to be so 'clever' they will basically not solve a problem, or allow themselves access to a solution, because the route to getting there isn't clever enough.
@leslietownes I agree, but without Mr. Stodge marrying Ms. Brilliant Mathematician, with creativity, (who agrees with Mr. Stodges already knows) Mr. Stodge will likely remain repeating the tried and true, but not advancing mathematics.
yeah. i don't recommend stodge as a research strategy.
but if you have 15 problems on a problem set due tomorrow, and you can get them via stodge, stodge away. or at least write "i know you can solve this via ___ but i am interested in a solution that doesn't go this route" on mse.
@leslietownes Indeed. The Ms. Brilliant mathematician, with curiosity and creativity, is not to be mistaken with a Hot Shot, nor crank, nor an arrogant sophomore!
But the genders are immaterial, one or the other... can be the stodge.
"In 2021 the winter solstice will occur on Tuesday 21 December. The winter solstice occurs in December, and in the northern hemisphere the date marks the 24-hour period with the fewest daylight hours of the year. That is why it is known as the shortest day of the year, or the longest night of the year." Meaning, the 19 days ahead of us, in the Northern Hemisphere, that is, will continue to get darker later in the am, and earlier in the pm.
After which each and every day, in terms of light, gets longer, until June 20/21 2022.
For all of our friends in the Southern Hemisphere, your days are getting longer and longer, until Dec. 21, 2021. Enjoy your coming Summer.
I don't mind it so much. But for @Jyrki, (former mod, site user now) who is currently residing in Finland, it'll be dark for most of the day.
I remember the series with Rob Morrow, which I couldn't remember the name of the series, Northern Exposure, in Alaska, the shortest day and longest day were played out in the show.
livvy's had quite a day. normally she settles into one of her sleep spots around noon and stays put until 5 or 6. today she kept getting up and demanding attention while we were trying to work. she only settled in about 30 minutes ago.
