A: Daughter just turned 13 and confides in me she wants to be a boy and has looked up the surgery and costs... is this part of the trans trend?

DanyaalWhat ever happens, make sure she has gender dysphoria. Transitioning without dysphoria is a massive mistake, and most realize this sooner or later. If she actually is transgender, then transitioning is necessary for the dysphoria. She needs to see a psychiatrist/psychologist for a diagnosis, and ...

While many trans people experience gender dysphoria, this isn't a prerequisite. Some frame it more like an euphoria for the gender they transition into. While I understand the point on autism, it's also important not to dismiss trans people's identities just because they're autists.
It's not a prerequisite, but transitioning without gender dysphoria LEADS to dysphoria. This is misinterpreted as dysphoria of the original gender, and leads to a vicious cycle. There is no euphoria, only the sexual attraction to transitioning, which is why people without gender dysphoria people transition. Then the sexual benefit goes away with hormones. PLEASE be careful about your advice, clearly you do not see the ramifications of this. This is why the suicide rate is so high. Also, for your second point, I totally agree and that's what I said in the post pretty much.
I don't recommend transitioning just for the fun of it, but this rarely happens, if ever: De-transition rates are low and the majority of de-transitions happen because of backlash from society. What I'm just saying: It isn't a prerequisite to feel - in very, simple terms - bad in your assigned gender at birth, but it essential that you feel better in the gender you transition into. And yes, those cases exist. And, actually, suicide rates correlate strongly with unsupportive environments.
I don't know why you think that having trans friends makes you an expert on this, but pretty much everything in this post would generally be disagreed with by the trans community at large. At very least you're making authoritative statements which are not backed up by any kind of evidence, and certainly not the ironclad evidence such sweeping statements would require. The stuff about most suicides being because of transitioning without dysphoria especially is... wholly unsupported by the evidence.
Actually, transitioning "for the fun of it" (AGP) is very common. The majority of people who identify as transgender are AGP, without dysphoria. You are misinformed my friend. I didn't say I was an expert, but you learn a lot when you have a transgender friend. In my post, there is good advice and logic. The only things that are, are related to being AGP, and only the AGP community would disagree with it.
"According to a 2015 survey of roughly 3000 American transwomen, at least 60% stated attraction to women, meaning they are heterosexual males. According to Ray Blanchard's studies, this would put them in the autogynephilic category, as homosexual transsexuals (HSTS) generally don't exhibit AGP."
When I referred to the suicide rate, I was referring to people being misinformed, not about the transitioning without dysphoria. I can imagine suicides being caused by transitioning without dysphoria, but this has no evidence for obvious reasons. As this is a parenting forum, I would suggest against attempting to dispute my advice. You are only confusing the person I am trying to help.

@Danyaal Re that quote about transwomen, you do realise that it is possible to be attracted to women and have gender dysphoria? I had two friends (not seen them for a little while) who are transwomen: one is bi (but mostly prefers women) and the other is lesbian. Neither are or were aroused at the idea of having a woman's body, they were simply repulsed by being born with a man's body.
@Danyaal I am a trans woman (with plenty of transgender friends) so feel confident telling you that autogynephilia (AGP) is an outdated and harmful idea that is not taken seriously by anyone who actually works with and tries to help trans people. Ray Blanchard is not an authority on the topic, and his studies have been heavily refuted, so most of the people still quoting him are normally trying to harm trans people. I suggest you do some further research.
"Most friends of the opposite gender" ? "Hobbies that seem to not match their birth gender's" That would be me. I'm female, not transgender, never even thought about it. Just had parents who didn't think having a computer before anyone else and a bunch of good friends who happened to be male was any indication that I wasn't a girl. And I was born in the 70ies. To any young girls reading the answer above: Don't take him seriously.
@Antyla if you explained what autogynephilia is, that would be helpful. My spelling checker doesn’t know the word.
You are wrong, it is indeed a trend. In Sweden there was rise with thousands of percent the last few years of teenagers that applied for gender change - until last year when it suddenly decreased with 65 (!!) %. If that is not a trend, show me a trend.
@Antyla state your sources.
@Marianne013 as I said, it is black/white. You have to use basic common sense, this is why I made the COULD bold, please read the whole answer first before commenting. I did NOT say that these points DEFINITELY mean that they are transgender.
@Graham yes, that is possible. This is not just about sexual orientation.

@Danyaal you aren't citing your sources, you're just quoting things which also make authoritative statements that generally would not be considered correct. If your claim to authority here is 'having trans friends', then should my claim to authority of 'actually being trans' automatically override you? No, cite your sources, and try to be more imaginative than literally citing Blanchard, who's theories are not taken seriously even within the medical community, never mind the trans community. Your ignorance here risks doing actual harm and I would recommend you do more research.
@Phoshi my "ignorance" prevents harm. You are misinformed. I am against transitioning without dysphoria. THERE IS NO HARM caused by not transitioning without dysphoria. It prevents harm because people tend to regret transitioning without gender dysphoria. You disagree with me, thus think it's harmful. The problem is in you, not me. My source is Blanchard and his studies, which are done by multiple people. Antyla stated that people refute them, so I request that SHE provides the sources about people refuting them. She made a point, and hasn't provided evidence yet.
I am not claiming authority, you think this because you disagree with me. I am using basic logic, backed by facts that have sources. EVERYONE that has gone against it here, provide no sources. Please stop arguing incessantly, this is a forum for HELPING people, not for ARGUING. My points are all valid.
@hensti I don't have much skin in the game here, but did you even try to see things from a different point of view before asking other people to do it for you? It's trivial to interpret your data as a surge of people who had wanted to transition for years but couldn't because it was not accepted by society, then once they realized it would be okay of course it all happened at once as word spread. Then subsequent years it suddenly stabilizes to more normal levels because the previous stockpile has been expended. Like a literal dam.

None of the points outlined in this answer point to dysphoria, except the last one. Showing interest in clothing that society has arbitrarily coded as "feminine" doesn't make you trans. Same goes for hobbies. Gender-nonconformity exists and it doesn't make you any more trans (or any less trans either, for that matter!). i.imgur.com/FZXIW4l.png
That part in parentheses is also equally important, because FtM men can still like "traditionally feminine" hobbies or clothing.
It's worth noting that "AGP" is a real thing though
