viewing the web in 1080x1920 occassionally is kind of amusing
thats an odd check to do on a music app
@lsiunsuex very odd.
I normally roll 1 1920x1080 and 1 1080x1920 but this morning I'm doing comparisons of invoices so I've got both my screens turned
amazing how crappy a crappy tv can be when used for a monitor
@lsiunsuex I don't doubt it
13:19
I'm 1680x1050 and 1280x1024
i bought a cheap $300 1080p tv thinking i'd use it for a monitor also - yeah, the resolution is high, but everything looks pixelated, color shifting from 1 side to the other
we've got some nice ones here that we use for demos in the conference rooms and they still aren't really any good for computer screens
the mbp is 1440x900 - its "ok" but i really want a thunderbolt display - IMO - nothing compares to apple monitors
or atleast a retina mbp - maybe next year
@lsiunsuex pretty sure they're just IPS boxes panels aren't they?
they are but i always feel the color calibration on them is different
13:52
wow, today's work assignment just became generate 22700 PDFs
@lsiunsuex You still thinking of coming to toronto for the weekend?
saturday or sunday for sure - not sure which
and not sure where - the sister wants to goto the zoo - i want to go shopping
thinking saturday as you guys generally (store wise anyways) shut down on sunday, no ?
Usually the shopping happens in the other direction -- both gender wise and nation wise.
No, we're open sunday. Only the small stores shut down
i'm a material guy - i like nice clothes :)
i think they want to go sightseeing as the boyfriend has never been there
really hoping they forget their passports at home so i dont have to go haha
It's going to be a cold weekend.
13:56
yeah it is
Highs will be around 60f.
same in buffalo - its not that cold
Spring jacket weather.
It's 42 right now.
13:59
39 and rain
y'all need to come down south
where spring means spring
(ie summer)
We've got two seasons up here. Hockey and Construction.
2
@waxeagle was watching some new home buyer show the other day - they were in atlanta
holy low housing prices
Spring means 80F and sunny one day, 23 and snowing the next.
house hunters atlanta or something
3000 sq ft for something like 150k - crazy - beautiful houses too - granite, hard wood, etc...
14:01
We're about 450k for a post-war 1200 ft bungalow.
@lsiunsuex 3400 here for 143k
that's in NW GA
I'm 1900 sq ft in a nice neighbourhood at about $750k
at which time i fired up monster.com - php programmer downtown atl - 80-125k / year - um.... i may have to move
like, it was my resume exactly
housing prices in TO are crazy
@lsiunsuex yeah we make decent to good money and housing is cheap down here a bit more in ATL than chattanooga but there are more programmer jobs in ATL
@waxeagle You guys have red dirt down there, right?
14:04
@Tester101 mostly clay yeah
specially where I live up in the mountains
u could build a mansion in buffalo for that kind of money
When they heard how much I paid for my place outside of DC, the Alabama team's jaws dropped. Apparently I could have had a swimming pool and a butler for that money down there. But then I'd have to live in Alabama.
we were 1700 sq ft for $120k 3 years ago
and 3 years ago my brother built new 2500 sq ft for around $250k
@BMitch no matter what you paid the answer to that is yes.
14:11
My townhouse went for $225k in 2000, about 2000 sq ft, today it's closer to $400k. I need to upgrade to something with a garage.
That's more or less my house. Backsplit. But mine is a bit above grade, so the lower level is at grade, rather than half below.
@BMitch Where are you?
@ChrisCudmore and how much $$$$$ / year do u make ? i know thats a loaded question but 800k house...
which is obviously a loaded question and u dont have to answer that
@ChrisCudmore Fairfax, VA
My wife and I each make in the 70-80 range.
14:14
Paid 600, went in with 125 cash.
125k cash ?
Yeah. There were some very frugal years before we bought.
120k house - put only the mandatory 3.5% down - mortgage around 1100 / month - i bring in just about 70k / year and freelance brings me between 15-30k / year - wife is around 40k / year
I'm guessing I'll upgrade to something in the $800k range in a few years, 350-450k from the sale of existing place, another $100k or so down on top of that, $300k mortgage should be easy to swing.
@lsiunsuex put 0 down on 143k mortgage payment is a touch over 900/mo. I make about 50k (though a raise is in the works) and wife makes around 20k. the killer for us right now is the 2 kids in daycare.
that's more than the mortgage payment :(
14:19
My Wife and Mother in law shared a 200k condo that my MIL had bought. We bought her a smaller (newer) condo, and paid that mortgage for her in 5 years. When we sold the big one, we pulled 75k out, and dropped in 50k of our own.
@waxeagle i hear day care can be a fortune
Kids will do that, there's one of those stick figure families on the back of a car with two bags of money instead of 2 kids.
@lsiunsuex 1200/mo with 2 kids in. Find out today if one of them gets to escape come fall.
My wife took a year off when the kids were born. At that time, daycare for infant twins would have been more that her salary - (taxes + work expenses)
Tranportation, clothing, etc.
really hope we have twins - get it done in 1 shot
14:21
@ChrisCudmore yeah we're right around the break even point but my wife likes working
(at least more than she likes being home with kids)
15:06
@ChrisCudmore the wife gets the 1 yr .ca benefit even though she is working in the US
Nice.
Mine was contracting for a US company at the time, so she got nothing.
she works for DND
Civilian?
Or Uniform?
Just buried my favourite Warrant Officer from my time in. Joined in 58, retired 92, volunteered with the Regimental Association and Regimental stores for 20 more years.
Civilian, she does financial things for them down here
That's department of national defen c e to the americans around here
At the embassy? Or attached to the Pentagon?
15:12
At the embassy, her position is permanent down here, she's not a rotation position
Nice. Is she considered diplomatic staff? Or green card worker?
diplomatic staff, she has an A-2
It gives you both lots of options for the future.
and we have different last names which causes no end of troubles in customs and immigration lines
yeah DC housing prices are a bit of a shock for most people
DC has its own economy so it doesn't usually fluctuate as much as it does in some other places
How far from DC does the effect extend?
15:25
Probably DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax & Loudoun counties, Montgomery county
Forgive my ignorance on local geography. Are those the immediately adjacent counties?
Yep
15:37
@lsiunsuex they're have been a few of those circulating. Glad my soldier buddies are all home.
the most recent one on active duty just game home 2 weeks ago, having a party for him tomorrow

Q: What is the name of a transparent nonflammable solid nonbreakable material?

ApostleThe material is easily processed and easy to screw up screws. Perhaps there is a nonflammable (refractory is a requirement of the specification) transparent material used in construction (ie easy to buy). Perhaps these properties of a plastic that combines the properties such as a glass and a ple...

Is this a riddle?
transparent aluminum, of course
diamonds meet all those properties except price
15:56
and being "easily processed".
dunno - looks like another murder room with me but this time with a viewing portal so people can watch the torturing take place - maybe they'll stream it via youtube
16:30
fabulous - in TO for 2 days now, not 1 - staying the night
@ChrisCudmore go for a drink DT at a club?
I'll check with the wife and see if she wants to go out. have to find babysitting though.
Does your wife speak Polish?
(asking her) i dont think so - their so far removed (generations wise) - shes never spoken in it and has no accent
italian - i can make my way through and understand though :)
Damn. Doing a new york strip roast tomorrow night for the visiting uncle. Can't go out.
its cool - another time
Her Uncle is visiting from Poland.
Where are you staying?
16:44
a marriott is all i know
sister controls the show when she comes (FML)
so long as it has wifi - i can get some work done while their out at canada's wonderland
actually, do your starbucks have free wifi also ?
If it's the Marriot on Bloor, you're just steps away from the gay village.
Yeah, I think so.
cool
her father is gay - to bad hes not coming
Don't go drinking on Yonge.
It's a lot tamer now that society is more accepting.
16:48
no, about the not drinking on younge steet
Yonge is the main NS street near your hotel. But it's really crappy drinking. Overpriced dives.
oh oh
maybe its front st then that i'm thinking has some of those clubs
we usually stick pretty close to the mall - safe there and i know my way around
Front is really gentrified.
Eaton Centre?
Try the Town Crier towncrierpub.ca
50 beers on tap, and 6 ciders.
Just get out of the area before 3:00 am, when the Jersey Shore crowd leaves the pubs.
16:52
crime or ?
Generally assholery.
You might end up playing poke-chest with a moron.
remember going to TO once with a friend who was in architect school at UB - some assignment to draw historical buildings - we stayed around till like 7 or 8pm in the winter so it was dark early - lots of homeless people
Yeah, the few older areas of town are magnets. They come in from all over the country.
"he likes pubs so we'll go there" - the pub u just listed - that'll work
unless a dj i like is playing i'm not a huge fan of clubs
like u said, between cover and drink price, their ridiculous
It's right across the street from the Hooters, which is a decent enough landmark.
16:59
do u know where the russian vodka bar is?
dentist friend went there last month with some bank reps - loved it
can't remember the name
thats it i think
been there? decent?
Nope. Haven't. I know the area, but I haven't been there.
It's about a 20 minute walk from the Crier.
how can her father be gay?
Just remember that any street that crosses Yonge has a name change at Yonge.
17:03
@Aaron some people come out of the closet late
@Aaron devorced when she was 12 - old enough that it was looked down upon when they got married so their whole relationship (mother and father) was a coverup
Usually just King W becomes King E.
The crier is at Adelaide, which is 1 (short) block N of King W.
Wellington is 1 (short) block S of King.
Then you have to walk back and across Yonge to get to the vodka bar.
i should write this down - data plans are expensive in CA for us 'mericans
@lsiunsuex And vice versa.
Just hold out a map and look confused. Someone will stop and help. It's an Indictable offense here not to.
3
Tip the desk clerk on check in (Hopefully before room assignment) and ask them to mark up a map for you.
Jesus Christ. Look at this listing: realtor.ca/…
Agent is a cigar buddy of mine.
Not a particularly nice area of town.
cheap though - comparitively speaking
17:16
And tiny.
@ChrisCudmore looks like a postage stamp
never understood why houses for sale on realty websites have the shittiest photos known to man
its like buying a car but all you've ever seen of it was 1 head light
don't they think people wanna know what the whole house looks like?
Below the street shot, click the "more" button.
There's a big facility on Front Street
and we have our offices in that big mall thing there
@ChrisCudmore i did that - but the photos dont get bigger
17:23
i get a new window, with clickable photos in it.
nope - chrome and firefox OS X - window pops up - the rest of the photos show as thumbnails but their not clickable
How's the patio going?
@Aaron The convention center?
holding for quotes on concrete pour - tonight and tuesday - then holding for some money to come in mid june cause a website project f'ed me and canceled the work
no, I think the mall at Yonge and dundas?
Eaton Centre.
17:28
That's it
18:07
so there is some weird flapper-esque thing on this toilet and I don't know how to detach it to put in this repair kit
it looks like two hollow cylinders at right angles to one another
150 Interchange Way · Toronto, Ontario L4K5P7 Canada -- hotel @ChrisCudmore
which is 30 minutes from Eatons - now i need to look for stuff to do around there
There's nothing to do around there. Absolutely nothing.
You're in Big Box Mall Suburbia.
"closest hotel to canada's wonderland" great
Close enough to Wonderland though. Just shoot up the highway.
i dont go on rollar coasters so i'm skipping that one
18:14
Although, It's highly Italian around there.
this may suck
And it's not even on Transit.
There's YRT (VIVA) busses that run along HWY 7, that might get you to Finch Subway.
Or you walk through the industial park and IKEA to Steeles and Jane, and catch a Toronto bus there.
no big deal - i'll have my car
But late night boozing is the problem.
for sure
18:18
Limit here is 0.05, and they're nasty about it. Just don't even try.
And cab fare from downtown will end up at about 40-50 bucks.
marriott.com/courtyard-hotels/hotel-dining-bistro.mi bar at the hotel - good enough in a pinch
Theres an Irish pub in the mall complex you're in. I've been there for lunch.
Kinda Generic, but should be ok in a pinch.
Dub Linn Gate Irish Pub.
4 minute walk according to google.
Doesn't look like a great bar in the hotel
think thats the starbucks they all have, no ?

Q: How can I remove this flapper alternative?

AaronI had good luck in the past using this product to replace a leaky flapper valve. However, this new toilet does not have a flapper hinge on the base of the flush valve. Instead, there is a hinged piece of plastic that looks like two cylinders attached to each other at right angles. The bot...

@Aaron thanks!
@KyleWest for ?
@Aaron how does that thing actuate?
@waxeagle let me go drain it and get a picture of it 'open'
@waxeagle 2nd picture added
@Aaron is there a pin in that hinge?
19:57
yeah, there is a pin in there but it's hard plastic on hard plastic so I didn't think it could come out easy
@Aaron ah, tester's answer says it's fixed and the hinges should bend
well, flex. I guess the bigger question though is can you mount your new flapper contraption to that or will you have to pull the flange out
20:27
Well, I managed to pop it out and put the new contraption in
but it required quite a bit of force to get the old thing out
It did mount to it so we'll see what happens, but it holds water out until it flushes
Man, why are there so many stupid parts in toilets
