@Aaron why would you risk damage to a high cost/low maintenance roof like that? Put up something freestanding, or pay your electric company a couple extra bucks for them to give you renewable energy.
if i had enough land, i've always thought about just building a trellis system to support solar panels out in the back of the yard - could even have them track the sun and get more power then them being on the roof stationary

Apparently one of the board members is so anal about people parking on the street that he's following them back to their cars to see if they really live in the neighborhood. Residents are threatening legal action and/or calling the police. Another board member took the opportunity to air their other grievances about this guy.
Thing is, the common street is state owned and parking permits are handled by the county, not our HOA, so I have no idea why he's confronting people with concerns that they might not be members of our neighborhood parking there. Our HOA has got issues.

the cheap end is all hit or miss - i tried x10 in my parents basement - sometimes lights would turn on, sometimes no - sometimes dimmers worked, sometimes no - same as anything else - do some searching, spend a little money - see what works for you in your budget - crestron is some expensive stuff - but its the best stuff out there

no, its a way to teach the kid that if he steps out of line there are consequences to be dealt with - sometimes monetary, sometimes capital punishment - the offense and severity decide which one. not saying i'd spank my kid for swearing; more along the lines of they stole something or caused a fight
anyways, in re solar panels on the roof, the problem is that the roof faces south already, and a lot of other areas are covered by trees except for the front yard
and a large trellis solar structure in the front yard, while not only being fairly unappealing aesthetically has a very low WAF
@Aaron just wait - there are some pretty significant advancements in power conversion coming to solar panels soon - new more efficient ones will be available in a year or 2
@lsiunsuex I'm not totally against spanking, but it should be an emergency measure only -- as a reinforcement that a behaviour is dangerous. When the kid is about to run into traffic, spanking will reinforce the important lesson. When you 4-year old is about to drown your 2-year old, then spanking is appropriate. But as a punishment for past behaviour, I think it's useless.

But the regulators are overpaying for green energy. In Ontario, they pay 75c a kwh, which is about 6 times what they sell it for. So when they cancel the subsidy, your payback period becomes really long.
Well, if you're selling back to them at 75c and buying at 12c, then you can manipulate your usage to make a small profit.

your doing it wrong - i work from roughly 530am to 430pm (out of the house) m-f then goto bed from 9pm to 450am - so for 18 hours roughly for 5 days, i can reduce my electrical consumption to almost nil - you need to figure out how long you need to actually power the house, what its consumption $$$ is and how to reduce it to nothing while your not home

@Tester101 a house wrap is designed to breath, it just stops liquid water from passing through. Water vapor can escape so it doesn't get trapped and condense inside your walls. A vapor barrier (e.g. 6 mil poly) is designed to keep water vapor from traveling from the inside of your home into the insulation where it could condense within the insulation during the winter.
Poly is a better barrier than what comes on fiberglass rolls, so you see it a lot more up north (and more so in Canada). I'm more familiar with the mid-atlantic where the vapor barrier from the fiberglass rolls is adequate.
Sadly, our HOA board cannot remove a problematic member of the board, we'd need to get a majority of the association to vote for that, and our last annual meeting had something like 6 out of 300 homeowners present. It's going to be a long year. Sigh
