@MichaelHasson Can I help you with something?

@Tester101 Hi, thanks. I'm not sure if this is the right thread to ask you but I haven't been able to figure out how else to contact you. I'm wondering about my post, and the email I sent regarding it? Did you get that email, or see my recent changes?
@MichaelHasson This is a fine place to contact me. I don't check the blog email as often as I should.
As for the last paragraph. We do not allow self promotion on the site, or the blog.
@MichaelHasson what should I spray on the ground to kill weeds before I put down weed blocker fabric for a stone paver path?

Q: What can I do to avoid incandescent bulbs for my 3-bulb ceiling fan, yet maintain brightness?

JoshDMMy ceiling fan takes 3 candelabra (E12) base bulbs for lighting. The bulb slots are labeled 75W - 125V. The fan light is dimmable and I currently use 3 60w incandescent flame tips. I plan to switch to LEDs or flourescent bulbs, but so far I have only found candelabra-based LED bulbs at 25w eq...

ChrisF reopened it. Apparently we do have a nice mod.

WHAT?!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Yeah, that's not really the purpose of the "no shopping recommendations" guidance. sighblog.stackoverflow.com/2010/11/qa-is-hard-lets-go-shoppingRobert Cartaino Mar 14 at 16:33
@robertcartaino Have we gone off the rails with the "no shopping advice" restriction?
My take was to close things if they were looking for a product with qualities X, but leave them open if they were asking "how can I compare these products", aka the "learning" part.
The question, especially as originally phrased was "where can I find a brighter LED bulb"
My attempt to rationally understand what JoshDM was looking for didn't go so well:
I'm trying to understand what answer would be helpful that isn't "here's a product that does what you're looking for" — BMitch Mar 14 at 18:29
You know what was helpful? @Monso's post about adding adapters. You know what isn't helpful? That no one responded as to whether I'm going to overload it by using a larger bulb when I responded to Monso because everyone's so concerned about OH NO A SALES QUESTION. — JoshDM Mar 14 at 18:44
@Tester101 Okay, no problem. My main goal was to get the Google plus reference in there so my picture would show up next to my post in the search results. I did edit the post to include a few relevant references. Please check those for me when you get a minute. Any other feedback on the post - anything else you want me to revise? -Thanks

Here is what our expert said, "Round Up Quick Pro would be a good choice to get rid of existing weeds right away . Next I would probably go with Bonide Total Vegetation control as it is a soil sterilent and will control future growth for up to 1 year (applicator should be careful not to apply around desirable plants)."
Quick Pro:

@MichaelHasson do you know about Gardening and Landscaping? we do lawn questions there
This seemed reasonably useful so I de-spammed it. Does anything else need to be done, like destroying the revision with the spam link?

A: Is there a case where nails are better than screws, from an engineering/structural standpoint?

GaryScrews are by far, in the majority of cases, the best fastener. A couple of cases where nails are in order would be with engineered brackets and sheathing, as noted earlier due to specified nailing schedules. As for decking, deck framing, exterior trim, the superior fasteners are SCREWS. You ca...

@waxeagle Personally, not really. However, I do have connections here with some people that know quite a bit. I will visit that section and see if there's anything valuable I can add (after asking one of our experts).
@NiallC. The only downside I see is that we're encouraging spammers, the user account is affiliated with the product, so it's not a user that accidentally recommended product X without disclosing that they weren't affiliated.
@MichaelHasson cool, just saw you talking L&G and figured I'd make sure you were aware of it :)
17:25
I appreciate it. I'll check it out.
but while you're here. Any good control suggestions for a huge population of boxelder bugs?
@BMitch True. Is it hammer time?
@NiallC. If you wouldn't feel offended that your hard work just got squished, I'm happy to smack it.
@BMitch My skin's thicker than that. Squish him!
(It would be a different story if he'd been pushing Robertson screws)
WHAM, SPLAT
@NiallC. hahaha, this is true.
Moderating makes me feel like Gallagher swinging his hammer. Clicking those buttons can be very therapeutic.
17:54
@waxeagle Here is what Jill (our pest expert) said about box elder bugs: "Talstar P! Talstar P can be used indoors and outdoors and on ornamental plants where this pest may land. Talstar P should be mixed at the 1fl oz per gallon of water usage rate for best results. (If boxelders are inside, the homeowner must be patient as these insects will only be killed as they crawl out of their harborage area and over the treated areas)"
@MichaelHasson cool. thanks. We just moved in a year ago and we have thousands of them outside and a few hundred in the house :(
@BMitch Well I guess that sets precedent. We allow shop for me questions, as long as they are phrased properly.
@waxeagle No problem, and good luck. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll get you an answer. Here are our box elder products, btw - domyownpestcontrol.com/box-elder-bugs-c-137.html
@MichaelHasson Unfortunately the no self promotion rule is very strict on the blog. Any and all links that promote your products or business will be removed before the article is published. If you'd like to retract your article, it would be a shame, but I'd understand.
We get tons of emails from people offering content, if they are allowed to place a single link to their product or service. All of these offers are discarded.
We are here because we love DIY, not so that we can profit financially.
18:09
@Tester101 I was on the fence about whether it could be reopened, but Josh's reply asking what answers he was looking for didn't get much sympathy from me.
Well, I'm glad I was wrong about what I said.
Mar 14 at 17:33, by Tester101
"does this product exist?" is a sneaky way to ask a shopping question. The answer will typically be "Yes. Follow this link to the product so you can purchase it".
I was apparently wrong about this as well.
Mar 14 at 17:22, by Tester101
@NiallC. That's his opinion. Not all StackExchange sites are StackOverflow. We have the freedom to bend the rules to our liking. If Robert can't understand that, he's doing it wrong.
Turns out we must fall in line with the StackExchange overlords wishes.
ChrisF is the one that reopened it, I'm guessing he was going through the review of questions with reopen votes.
@Tester101 Okay. I must say I am a bit surprised that there is no allowance for author attribution. A simple "about the author paragraph", I thought, would have been a perfectly non-promotional way of crediting an author and their resources. What about image credits?
why not sort it on your meta?
Still curious about Robert's thoughts on this, @RobertCartaino did we miss something?
18:18
@MichaelHasson you should get authorship through an SE flair card on the post that links to your SE profile where you can have whatever promotional links you like. (shouldn't he?)
@MichaelHasson We link to your DIY.SE user account at the end of the articles. Use your user page to do whatever you like.
Yes, SE flair card with links to your own site is welcome/encouraged
@waxeagle Shop for me was discussed on meta:

Q: Can we discourage "Shop for me" type questions?

Tester101From time to time, questions pop up where the asker is having trouble locating a product they like. For the most part, it seems like they want the community to help them shop. Since these questions are usually very localized; and usually closed, should we add something to the faq to discourage th...

I see, okay thanks. Can the no-follow tags on my profile links be removed? Is that something that must be earned?
I always make sure the DIY flair card is at the end of each post.
@MichaelHasson that's come up recently, let me check MSO
18:21
@MichaelHasson This is part of the reason we ask that all contributors be a member of the diy.se community.
@waxeagle Okay, thanks.
@NiallC. Great, thank you.
@Tester101 Well I would still like my post to go up here, links or not. I would appreciate them in but I understand if not. I think this is a great community and I hope my post can offer some value.
Ok, at 2k rep rel=nofollow is removed from the website link on your profile. All links in the "About Me" section except another link to the one listed as your website get rel=nofollow. meta.stackoverflow.com/a/171509/170797
@MichaelHasson I'm happy to hear you say that. I think you'll be a valuable member of the community, and I look forward to your continued participation.
@waxeagle Thanks for digging that info up. Good to know.
Is the blog post in question available as a draft for people with blog access to view?
18:28
@Aaron I think only admins and editors can see it.
@MichaelHasson Your article should be published next Tuesday.
Hmmm... I thought I was an 'editor' but I can't find it in the blog contrl panel
@Tester101 Sounds good, thanks.
@Aaron You're listed as an editor.
Ah, I see it, I guess I thought I was looking for something else

Small Q, after replacing my shower/tub diverter and installing the tub, I realized I switched hot and cold. I'm replacing the rest of the pipe in this room anyways however. Is there a strong convention about hot on top for horizontal runs? Should I just use two pairs of elbows to correct this? Ugly I know
19:13
@joshdoe as long as hot is the left tap, it shouldn't matter how the pipe gets there.
@Tester101 ok good, but perhaps i should use two 45s to make the crossover since it would seem to have 1/4 the pressure loss
19:28
Most of the horizontal runs I have , they're side by side
19:47
@Aaron of course for 2x4 studs that would require steel plates on both sides, but not a problem for joists

I really hate telling SE employees that they are posting off topic things.
My opinion, but "how do I hide this wiring" is on topic, "is hiding the wiring typically included in a contract" is off topic. Side note, cash only without any paperwork from a big name electronics store? Did the big name operate out of the back of a truck starting with an M and rhyming with Bosnia? :) — BMitch 1 min ago

Mosnia?
@Aaron Lol, Mafia, SE is in the NYC area, I figure a bunch of them live in NJ.
