Q: How to use ceramic glaze to waterproof an earthen tank?

BenjaminA rammed-earth architect and myself have had the idea of building rammed-earth water tanks that would be coated with ceramic glaze on the inside, as an alternative to a cement / concrete tanks, for remote areas of Nepal, where transporting cement would be logistically unsound. We have yet to exp...

@Tester101 I don't think so

A: Polymorphism vs Overriding vs Overloading

Chris CudmoreThe clearest way to express polymorphism is via an abstract base class (0r interface) public abstract class Human { ... public abstract void goPee(); } This class is abstract because the goPee() method is not definable for Humans. It is only definable for the subclasses Male and Female....

@ChrisCudmore nice

@maple_shaft I did some research, and it appears that the markings on the breaker I posted yesterday means you can terminate a single aluminium or copper wire, or 2 copper wires.

user image
@Tester101 what do you mean by terminate?
@maple_shaft Connect.
I'm no electrician (but I play one in my own house), but I believe that means you can attach two copper wires, where normally you should only attach one.
@Tester101 is it common to connect two wires to a single pole breaker?
15:05
No. Not that I'm aware of.
Is that a photo of a 10,000 Amp breaker, or is that the current before it arcs across a tripped breaker?
10kA is the short-circuit current limit.
To put 10kA into perspective... that is roughly how much current Ernest was discharging at the prison guards at the end of Ernest Goes to Jail
Hmm... Just went down and grabbed an extra breaker I have laying around. Looks like Square-D allows 2 copper wires on their breakers.
10kA is also known as 1 Griswold Unit, as in, "The Griswold house at Christmas consumes about 6 GU's/hr"
15:13
It seems the more research I do into things like this, it turns out the information on the internet is wrong.
While double tapping is against code in general, it is acceptable if the breaker is rated for it. And it appears (at least in my case), most breakers are rated for it.
So to all those folks who simply say "Double tapping is wrong!", you might be wrong.
Immediate action on effective enemy fire: Double tap, dash, down, cover, observe, return fire.

@lsiunsuex Only when it's a training exercise. Can't be used in actual combat.

canada wins (finally)!
I'm from Toronto. We don't get snow.
It magically appears in the corners of parking lots, but you don't see it on the ground. Also, it's black, not white.
On a 20A breaker. The 20A rating is for overcurrent protection (thermal), 10kA rating is for short-circuit protection (magnetic).
So there are actually two tripping mechanisms?
So. If the current goes over 10kA at all, the breaker trips. If the current goes over 20A for long enough, the breaker trips.
Given that a motor is essentially a short circuit until it gets spinning, it makes sense to have a high threshold.
15:30
The short-circuit protection is provided by an electromagnet, that pulls a lever if the current is high enough.
The overcurrent protection is provided by a bimetal strip, which when heated enough will cause the circuit to open.
Still not sure what this bit means?
I know HACR means it can have motor loads, but I'm not sure about "TIPO CARR"
@Tester101 I watched an episode of How It's Made where they showed a factory where people assembled breakers
They explained everything lay so it was easy to understand how everything worked
"TIPO" means type in some languages (spanish, italian)
so "CARR" would imply the HACR just above it
Given that it's UL and CSA, I'd assume North American, and therefor Spanish.
Whats our policy on crap like this?

Q: 4 microwaves torn up in a month

tina jamisonwe have went through 4 microwaves in less than a month. the 1st microwave we had for about 2 years but before it tore up it would not shut off sometimes so we would have to leave the door open or it would keep running but it would only do that for a day or so then would go back to normal then fin...

Ideally, I'd close it as "not even worth editing"
I don't have the altruism to help the illiterate.
15:47
Vote to close
"before it tore up" - i'm gonna use that tonight at the bar
Although, the proper question is "What the hell are you microwaving?"
@ChrisCudmore androids
Seriously. I think they're refining nuclear fuel or something.
@Tester101 ah, that's what you meant by short circuit protection, makes sense
15:48
Not likely anybody will be able to figure out why 4 microwaves got tore up, without actually going there and testing stuff.
First thing I'd check would be wall voltage. Something could be amiss there.
@ChrisCudmore if the IP checks to Iran....or PRK...
@ChrisCudmore my preference is to hide under a blanket until someone else makes the bad questions stop.
I may lose my mod hammer for that, but it's still true.
First thing I'd check, is what they put in the microwave and for how long.
@waxeagle Then we'd be obligated to block it under transfer of technology laws.
15:51
Arby's sandwiches say "do not microwave in wrapper" right on them.
It should also say: Do not eat.
@ChrisCudmore hey now, fresh sliced roast beef, sliced right in the store (where they cook it, I haven't a clue)
@ChrisCudmore Hey now... Arby's is actually somewhat edible compared to other fast food
@waxeagle beat me to it
lol
Toronto has a significant Jewish population. We get the good sliced beef here.
@maple_shaft it's the one fast food place I'll defend, although I'd take 5 guys in a heart beat.
and the coronary that goes with it.
15:53
I do actually like the Arby's market fresh sandwiches
Never tried 5 guys. One just opened up near me. I should give it a shot.
@ChrisCudmore it's seriously good, just take a friend and split the order of fries
@ChrisCudmore The Ass-end of the cow is best part of cow... the jews don't know what they are missing
@ChrisCudmore That's what she said.
@ChrisCudmore I've got a mental image of the incredible hulk asking that question, and then ripping another microwave in half.

This makes me want to try it: youtube.com/watch?v=zGkHRa64sDY
@BMitch I can't stop snickering every time I read that. Thankful I'm by myself today.
@BMitch that would be. "4 shirts torn up in a month".
@ChrisCudmore I love that video, and the autotuned version

Q: Odd or even number of products per row on a product listing page?

Roger AttrillI heard from a reputable source that on e-commerce websites, users find it easier to choose a product when there is an odd number of items in row, as compared to an even number. In their experience, 3 or 5 products tested better than 4, for example. Sure enough - I can find plenty of sites with...

now that is an interesting question
16:33
what does "Full Stack" mean
In what context?
programming
"full stack programmer"
^ full stack
that being true - technically "stackoverflow.com" is wrong in only focusing on programming and not the server side, no ?
if the stack is overflowing, it could be a problem with the server or the programming, right ?
well, what do you mean by 'server side' ?
16:41
well
If we're talking about actual "instruction stack" or whatever it is that gets smashed in 0 day exploits with assembly pops and jumps and whatnot, that's always programming
if a full stack developer takes it from bare metal to programming, then stackoverflow only focusing on programming isn't "entirely" correct
why do you think full stack developer and stack overflow have anything to do with one another?
and to be 100% pedantic, a full stack programmer would just write their own everything, OS, web server, application, etc., but that's going the long way around for no good reason
simply the sheer fact that "stack" is in the domain name, BUT, server fault also exists as a separate entity
the problem is once you get to a certain level, you specialize, and the site would have so much noise that it owuld be hard to find useful questions
16:44
i'm just over analyzing cause its friday and i dont want to work - but - stack being in the name could imply it covers the full stack, not just programming
tuning apache, for example, isn't really a "programming" skill

@lsiunsuex I think I knew some of those already

hmmm why do I get +5 sometimes for an upvote and sometimes +10
I think +5 is for votes on questions.
ah yes
They keep reminding me: Questions need love too!
But then they treat them like bastard children.
