I just got a and I feel fine hat. but, unless I'm mistaken, it's not the 21st yet.
Lets not rush the end of the world here people.

Q: How do I build a form and pour a concrete pad?

HounshellI have a new safe that I want to put out in the garage. I'd like for it to be in a specific corner, but that corner has a few quirks. First, the slab is pretensioned. No cutting, drilling, coring, etc. All around the garage the concrete comes up about 6 inches, and drywall starts above that. ...

would actually make a good blog post
i probably could answer it too

A: How do I build a form and pour a concrete pad?

lsiunsuex This was a project I did earlier 2012. We wanted to install central air conditioning for our new furnace and there was no better place to put the outside unit than on this side of the house. Unfortunately, the pad there was a wedge shape. So I made a form and turned it into a rectangle. C...

kinda surprised i actually documented that project on facebook and had so many photos of it haha
woot! got a hat!!! can i wear it or is it just like a badge?
@lsiunsuex You can wear it. see meta for more detail.
love @Tester101 for properly formatting my answers :)
@lsiunsuex Screed not "screen"
:) i'm a Deigo - i learned how to pour concrete from my dad / grand father - not vocational school :)
Interesting fact about concrete
concrete w/o rebar will last an incredible amount of time (see Rome) - but using Rebar while making it more flexible and less prone to cracking shortens the lifespan to about 100 years
so my cousin tells me anyway
12:52
i didnt use rebar in this project - the condensor doesn't weight to much and thats about all thats on that pad - but never know what stupid shit people do
Did it just get brighter in here?
@Tester101 thats the sun - the end is near
@Tester101 Sorry, my nose is still turned on.
Hmm. "Hats" don't appear here
sad
@lsiunsuex What prevents the new concrete from cracking away from the old?
12:54
@Tester101 You're supposed to use a bonding agent between old and new
2
for me - shear weight - i had thought about drilling holes into the old and using rebar to connect them
@Tester101 Looks like everyone is feeling fine, I guess they are worried that we might not get it tomorrow.
crap - my license plate is in the photo :(
lets hope theres no phycos out there...
@lsiunsuex I've never understood the concern about blurring license plates. Do you worry about others seeing it while you drive down the street?
no, i guess not

Q: Lightweight material that bends effortlessly, yet maintains its shape?

neezerLooking for something to use on a fine fabric (like silk) for a DIY art project I'm working on. I want this fabric to have a very lightweight spine to it, so that when left alone it would appear to have a shape (like low frequency sine wave, for example). However, I also want this spine to be ab...

is that batman? hes looking for memory cloth - Fox invented it in the first movie.
13:08
@lsiunsuex From the photo, maybe it's Robin.
@TheEvilGreebo then again, the Romans didn't have concrete bonding agents
@lsiunsuex true, but they didn't use rebar either ;)

14:49
huh
gravatar is lagging
@TheEvilGreebo It's not Gravatar, it's the internet. The internet has a broadcast delay built in.
@Tester101 so they can bleep the swearing? or is it to prevent us from posting pics of Janet Jackson's boob?
Both.
@Tester101 BAD INTERNET
Also, it prevents government secrets from being leaked.
14:59
big brother loves you
Everything posted to the internet must be approved by the NSA.
2
So the NSA has to approve everything on the internet. This begs the question, just why exactly are there so many pictures of cocks online?
The NSA loves chickens, obviously.
keeping my mouth shut in fear of being banned again
15:02
You were banned before?
This is slightly unnerving... nsa.gov/kids/index.htm
for posting a photo of a voluptuous women in a tight white top holding a sledgehammer during PUT
@Tester101 what? teaching kids how to encode things so their parents can't find them?
@lsiunsuex You horrible person!
i know :(
15:09
If you go on there and ace all the games, how long do you think it is before the guys in black suits show up?
15:23
am i the only one that is slightly hesitant to answer questions from users with very low (<500) rep because they almost always never accept an answer?
@lsiunsuex You gain more rep through up votes than you do through accepts (usually).
I don't understand peoples fixation with the check mark.
dont care about the check mark so much as the rep
It's only 15 rep, and it's only 15 per question. up votes are limitless (not considering rep cap).
even though I frequent the site all day / everday, in the grand scope of DIY, theres not much i feel comfortable commenting on; i take my rep where I can get it
I usually use the site as a way to learn. If somebody asks a question that I don't know the answer to, I'll research it and report back what I found.
15:33
i try to do that if i have time
Even when I think I know the answer, I often still do research to find quotes, images, and other info to back up my answer. I find I learn a lot while researching things I already knew.
Oh... and eHow, Yahoo answers, about.com, and most forums, are not good sources.
Quoting "Bob from Kentucky", is not a valid citation.
@Tester101 about is usually actually researched to some degree, but yeah
@waxeagle Yes. about.com did a quick google search, eHow read about it on about.com, and most of the people on yahoo answers are just bored and like reading the words that pop up as they type.
@Tester101 this
15:58
what a weird bug...
@lsiunsuex ?
when we walk away from our desks, we have to lock our desktops - if i do so with flash running, be it in a browser or an adobe air app (pandora) and i come back and login, it takes well over 4 minutes to login again
been happening ever since i upgraded to 10.8 OS X and its getting really annoying
its not using that much ram - pandora is around 70mb according to activity monitor - over 1gb free of memory - so its not a resource issue
discussions.apple.com/thread/3209415?start=30&tstart=0 could be a problem with automatic graphic switching - turned it off, see if it helps

Is this spam, or just a really lazy answer?

A: What are the differences between hot and cold roof systems?

Eric GunnersonA great source for information on this is the BuildingScience website.

17:40
i thought it was spam
i think lazy
the answering user has a decent history otherwise
its a sucky answer tho
woot! 4 hats
does the person with the most hats get a hat for having the most hats?

Q: I want to wire a ground fault breaker to a on off switch in my garage

charlieElectrical, I want to wire a ground fault circuit breaker directly to a switch in my garage

Answer I didn't give. "Ok, go ahead."
and that's 4 hats for me
17:57
@TheEvilGreebo How does one wire a GFI breaker to a switch?
lol
I wanted to answer, "Step 1) Call an electrician, Step 2) .... Step 3) Profit!
I am not going to make it for PUT today
so I want to throw up my weekend project early...
@maple_shaft I don't know. I assume he did and he wanted permission. :)
So I am going to install a ceiling fan and I remove the cover over the ceiling junction box and find this
14/3 exposed
not seperated and nutted off or anything, just hanging in there
not sure that is code but the builder left it that way for me none the less
protected!
lol
Got the bracket and the fan base up, wired it all together
wrapped up the nuts with electrical tape because thats the way my father in law taught me
apparently most people don't do this
love it...
I even wired it so that light and fan operate on seperate switches
HYPERSPEED ENGAGED!!!!
18:10
i purposely removed all fans from my house and your trying to add some. Blasphemy!!!
looks good though otherwise :)
Fans are teh awesome
specifically, the photos of the office
is it wrong to install cabinets and countertops in a bedroom (converting that bedroom to an office) knowing that when you sold the house, the cabinets could be removed if they wanted to use it as a bedroom again ?
we're only talking a few cabinets held in with screws - wouldn't do a backsplash as its not a kitchen
@Tester101 Screw the nut on, then tape the nut on cause our screws suck - that seems to be the message
I think all that needs to qualify as a bedroom is a closet and at least one window for egress
@lsiunsuex wrong is the wrong word to use - no its not wrong
@maple_shaft and ventilation
and closet isn't required I think
ah yes and ventilation
@TheEvilGreebo Not for building codes but for real estate purposes they are not allowed to call it a bedroom without a closet
18:33
@maple_shaft interesting. I turned a small bedroom into an office and removed the closet door, leaving just an alcove
I think its still a bedroom but I could be wrong
upper cabinets are 24 inches deep i think - i did my lighting 30 inches from the corner - would work well i think
in other words, there is nothing in building codes that would preclude installing cabinets and countertops, but a real estate agent might think differently
@lsiunsuex 18 or 12 I think
@Tester101 Why do many electricians forgo the use of tape?
on the wire nut
@maple_shaft additional cost of the tape? or time taken to wrap nuts in tape
i like to wrap my nuts in tape
18:35
It's not a standard, or a requirement. It depends on who taught you, and where you did most of your work.
It seems to me, guys who work mostly residential don't tape. Guys who work mostly industrial, HVAC, motors, etc. tape.
@Tester101 My father in law was a maintenance foreman in a steel mill and oversaw many electricians so that makes sense.
dad worked in a machine shop - dad taught me to use tape. makes sense also.
Home builders are always looking for ways to cut costs / save time. In industrial work focus is on "up time", not saving a few pennies on tape.
@Tester101 Is it code to just leave a cut wire like that in a ceiling box?

Q: Does a bedroom have to have a closet?

kasdegaI'm finishing my basement (actually its the second basement I've finished). And I've built what I think is a bedroom in the basement. I had the ELECTRICAL inspector in here the other day and as he's going through the inspection he says: "So this isn't going to be a 'legal' bedroom, because it h...

18:46
red and black are right next to each other so when I flip either the red or black switch then I can't imagine it would be too hard for them to arc
but it is on an arc protected circuit so...
idk
Just thinking that if my wire cutter was dull then it could pinch the copper if not a clean cut and it is pinched, then there is little to no distance between any two wires... equals voltage potential
@maple_shaft If it's abandoned and not labeled for future use, it should have been removed. Otherwise, I can't find anything in NEC that says it has to be capped. But I'll keep looking.
@Tester101 It was intended for future use, but it was not labeled
Was it connected to a breaker, or just hanging loose somewhere?
It was connected to an AFCI breaker
That was labeled?
18:58
not labeled
the wire was not labeled for future use
I paid for them to put a mounted ceiling box capable of supporting a ceiling fan with the intent that a fan would be installed after construction has been completed
The house passed all electrical inspections without a single mark
@maple_shaft Regardless of what code says, if there's a possibility for the wire to be energized I would put a cap on it.
I am surprised that code doesn't mention this at all
it would never be a safety concern as long as there is AFCI breaker which is now required by code, but if I started having problems on that circuit then it would have been a bear to figure out the cause
@maple_shaft Even if it's on an AFCI breaker, and even if it's labeled, I would still put caps on the wires.
I agree
Why? Because caps are dirt cheap, breakers can fail, shocks hurt and fires are dangerous.... to save a dime?
19:05
its wired now so it isn't a concern, and certainly compared to the other horror stories I hear about shady builders, I still consider myself fortunate
I literally have to nitpick over little stuff like this
they really did a great job overall
I'm anal about other peoples' wiring jobs. When I renovated my place I capped both the hot and cold wires because I don't know what surprises they did in j boxes or switches.
@MatthewPK Did I tell you about the miswired black lead that was hanging in my breaker box at my old house?
negative
black wire, just hanging there, wired incorrectly at a junction box in the basement... it was hot...
well, they thought you might want to use it for something!
they were just being considerate
19:08
unlabeled breaker didn't have a wire in it, it was hanging right next to it, go to plug it back into the breaker where I thought it belongs... POP
sparks
here's the funny part: there was just a 50/50 chance of that :D
If you had plugged it into the same phase, rather than the opposite phase
God must love me
you might not have known in such an obvious way
19:10
It was the electrician that fixed it for me
he fixed the problem in the junction so that wire was dead, plugged it into the empty breaker and labeled it UNUSED, problem solved
well g2g
later guys
Anybody used one of those Rennai on-demand water heaters?
19:22
NEC 2008 310.2(A) Insulated. Conductors shall be insulated.
Exception: Where covered or bare conductors are specifically permitted elsewhere in this Code.
@maple_shaft /\ This might work
19:59
Ok, time to kick this off so I can get back to coding...
Welcome to Project Update Thursday
Anyone causing any chaos for the holidays?
nothing planned over the holidays
I'm trying to reduce the chaos in my house
@BMitch unfortunately we're traveling basically the whole time. Which means both all my time and all my money is spent
Even if you aren't traveling, most people's money has been spent this time of year.
In that case, what does everyone plan to use their gift cards on?
@BMitch new drill and a power saw of some kind....probably dependent on how much I end up getting
20:07
cool, ok, that's all you guys get out of me
I'll leave you with a topic: sawzalls, what can't they be used for? Discuss. :)
cutting porcelain tile
whats a good christmas gift for a father (mine) around $50
not tools - he has to many and no clothes
blue collar - no good
Underwear!
northerntool.com/shop/tools/…-Power%20Tools--Power%20Tool%20Accessories-_-153501&ci_sku=153501&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw={keyword}&gclid=CKGE3fHmqbQCFcxAMgodfm0AYw
i stand corrected - you could cut tile with a sawzall
20:22
Dang, the question got closed.
My concept of Christmas Spirit
Warning: Flipping the switch to the ON position will either trip the breaker, or start a fire.
@TheEvilGreebo what does Charles Haberle do at Technip?
wrong person
21:06
@lsiunsuex Dunno, he's not me ;)
Looks like PUT died, last call for updates before I close up
I hope everyone that celebrates it has a safe and merry Christmas.
and for everyone else, go easy during the airing of the grievances.
Thanks for joining this week's PUT

@TheEvilGreebo It's not the winter solstice yet; another 13 hours to go, give or take.
If I see the dolphins making a run for it, then I'll know we're screwed.
