@BMitch sure send it over
01:56
@waxeagle SE's UI sucks, I'm not getting the migrate window when I go to close it, it just closes immediately. I'm guessing I hit the time limit for migrating questions so we're stuck with this.
@BMitch close -> off topic -> gardening
oh right, yeah they killed migrations > 60 days
or something along that line
yup, I was looking for the time threshold in the documentation
UI annoys me, after the timeout it goes close -> off topic -> boom, mod hammer, post closed

Q: Disable migration for questions older than 60 days

Shog9This has come up a few times now: migrating old questions causes problems. The most popular solution to this to date has been to reset votes on migrated posts. This is do-able, but frankly it feels like treating a symptom, and doing so in a way that penalizes folks who answer what are by all ap...

@waxeagle yup, I don't follow meta.SO since it's often based on SO specific topics, and it's a fire hose. Too bad they don't get meta.SE working.
02:32
@BMitch I know it. I keep an eye on the TL which is how I know about this stuf
@waxeagle Yeah, when I said I was searching the documentation, I was searching the TL history because I remembered seeing something about it. Completely forgot about that whole meta site.
@BMitch yeah, it's a pain though, you really have to konw what you're looking for
@waxeagle Geek and Poke sums it up nicely, here's one of the many instances: geekandpoke.typepad.com/geekandpoke/2010/01/…
@BMitch too true.
I work on a project that is virtually undocumented. but it's vb so it's all self documenting (right?)
@waxeagle haha, my documentation technique is to delete all the useless comments from India developers and replace the code with something slightly more readable (and more importantly, functional) making any comments unnecessary. :)
02:42
@BMitch 99% of our code follows the same form, so it's not like there is much a CS grad with a vb.net book couldn't understand
the 1% is more complicated, but it's where all the magic happens :)
// magic happens here

so this is cool (for you web developers) woopra.com - real time traffic monitoring
@lsiunsuex interesting, something to look at if I ever do something client facing...
something else for me to sit here and watch all day and obsess over haha
13:56
@lsiunsuex You mean besides SE chat?
true.
anyone that hangs out in a chatroom is looking for someone to talk to. no one comes here to find out how to get electrocuted while cutting steel braided 110v lines with bolt cutters, do they ?
(i've done that, btw)
I wish they did.
Think of the lives we could save.
every DIY'er should experience electrocution at least once in their life. its a rit of passage.
@lsiunsuex I've never been massively shocked, but I got zapped pretty good a couple of times at my first job. And that was just changing flourescent bulbs
So did you two electrocute yourself before asking questions here?
yesterday, by BMitch
There are lots of stupid people, but most of them electrocute themselves before they ask a question on DIY.se
:)
14:04
@BMitch definitely, this was when I was like 13 or 14
it was last year while remodeling the master bedroom - there was an armored cable running from the wall to under the floor (re: ballon framing) and it tested dead twice - once with my fluke and another with that little wand thing that makes a noise and lights up - apparently that wasn't a good enough test haha - so between the gloves and fiber glass electrical tools, i got just a jolt, not a full blown need to be kicked to let go of the wire
I got out of the fork in the outlet stage before that, but I did manage to shock myself a few more times afterwards.
@lsiunsuex if you can, test at a junction point. All that armor and insulation can throw off contactless testers
the fluke was a strait up line meter - so i had contact - apparently not good enough though - but yeah - now i test like 12 times anywhere i think the line is attached
1 more bedroom and the entire house will have updated electrical so i got 1 more shot at bad luck haha
@lsiunsuex yeah, I'm pretty fanatical about testing bofore I touch. Need to get a multimeter instead of the little light bulb checker I've got right now....and I think a non-contact tester is on my christmas list.
@lsiunsuex chicken ;)
14:10
or maybe I'll just pick one up when I need one, they aren't that bad
i don't normally buy tools, but when i do, i buy fluke.
dammit, star me! :)
think i'm gonna go find my heat gun and strip the wood trim in the bathroom this weekend, prime and paint - one of the only rooms we never did that still has old trim.
theres a window in the shower (with privacy film) and the paint is chipped and i think something is growing on it
when we remodel the bathroom, gonna reduce the height of the window by half or 2/3rds so water doesn't hit it so much and glass block the top i think
quick question, what kind of batteries do these non-contact testers (fluke or klein) usually take? Are they AA/AAA or something specialized?
nm on klein, found the AAA reference
@BMitch bit stunned that amazon doesn't tell me for the fluke
mine have always been AAA
@waxeagle I was looking at amazon, hence the question
14:23
@BMitch figured
@BMitch wonder if they regularly don't when the product ships with batteries?
@waxeagle usually it says included i think
it says batteries included/required, and on klein it has a section in the description about the batteries, so I guess it's all about who enters the descriptions
hey guys , i have trouble getting in the math chat room :(
i need to login forever
:s
whats the deal about that ? arent all chatexchange chats equal ?
nevermind
bye
that was odd
the logic behind that comment made no sense. maybe he should visit math.SE ?
14:32
he's there now, strange place to ask for help
math... diy... may have had more luck in stackoverflow?
we'll this is enough of me ignoring my day job and adding tools to my amazon wish list, back to work
still trying to figure out what to use over here - imperial or metric

facebook.com/groups/318270501614590 - boycott walmart on black friday!
@lsiunsuex but it's the best place to shop. it's never busy
personal opinion - now is a really bad time to strike against anything. they can very well just fire you and hire new staff
So, Black Friday is no different to me than any other day of the year. I refuse to enter Wal-Mart.
@lsiunsuex yes, plenty of unemployed out there who would be happy to work for basically anything
we do the vast majority of our shopping online now
few years ago we waited in line for an hour and a half at Kohls - not doing that shit again
15:31
I do 90% of my shopping at Lowes, and the Liquour Control Board of Ontario.
thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4628715/… A: why does a 29 year old own a F1 McLaren and B: holy f' thats a lot of money for an F1.
A: What kind of question is that? Why SHOULDN'T he own one?
@lsiunsuex he got money somewhere he's been buying and selling since he was 11
not saying he shouldn't own it - new it was over 1mil
" why does a 29 year old own a F1 McLaren" - why would you even ask why then unless the implication is he shoudn't?
now "HOW" does a 29 yr old get to own one - THATS a good one I'd like to know myself ;)
15:38
sorry, sorry, miss implied
why / how - same difference - hes 29 - why should imply the how

Q: Filtered water soaked Leica D-Lux 4 repair?

lsiunsuexApologies if this question doesn't fit here (suggested by a moderator) While on vacation in Las Vegas, the wife decided to pour a bottle of filtered water into her purse and coincidentally, all over our Leica D-Lux 4 camera. The camera, after a few days of drying out, actually survived and work...

so... if getting it repaired is going to cost me > $400 i may as well try to do it myself? cause i'm sure as hell not paying that much for a repair when she bought it on ebay for $500 used

Is that what the double lines on a spirit level are for?
That's an excellent question
yeah, meta.so is really too so oriented, I thought I heard in a podcast a few months back that they were going to make a new meta.stackexchange and just have meta.so be for issues related to so, like all the other sites
@Aaron Yes, its a pitch reference
er
@ChrisCudmore its a pitch reference
@Aaron it's in the pipeline, but 6-8 weeks out
(just like it was 6-8 weeks ago)
are you sure it's not 2 weeks?

or is that 1/8th inch per foot per line

Anyone know how to cancel a bad paste to a database in Visual Studio? I've got 10000 rows, and it's giving me a popup for each one.
stop using VS for data management for starters
you'll have to kill devenv process I fear
drop it into excel and convert it to SQL
I was pasting into a table, and forgot a conversion operation.
Nothing wrong with VS for those one-offs.
@ChrisCudmore says the guy with 10,000 pop up messages
devenv.exe killed.
I was hoping for a shortcut abort like alt-k,i,l,l
not using VS is the shortcut :)
Mind you I use VS for everything but not data management
17:42
I have to walk 20 feet to get to the server.
why would you have to go to the server?
@ChrisCudmore don't you have a local SQLE install?
Because for some brilliant reason, I'm not allowed to have SQL Management studio on my box.
...
you're a developer, aren't you?
thats moronic
But IT is run by a paranoid idiot.
17:45
you can execute sql from w/in VS
Wrapping lines in sql is tedious. Just paste the damn data in.
10000 popups here you come!

If anyone is bored, we should start making a list of questions to send over to Gardening.
@BMitch promote me to moderator and i'll help! :)
@lsiunsuex No need to be a moderator, I can't even migrate them anymore
but i want to be a moderator though :(
@lsiunsuex run next year :P
@waxeagle I think a similar meta post would be useful on Gardening, we want to be sure we're migrating only the good stuff
18:34
@BMitch Q1: Why does gardening suck so bad?
@BMitch Q2: Wouldn't the world be a better place without gardening?
@TheEvilGreebo closed as NC :P

Stages of moderation: 1. I want to be a mod. 2. I am a mod, awesome! 3. I'm afraid I'll break something. 4. Muhahah I have the power, bow before me. 5. Damn, this is too much like work.
3
@waxeagle lol
@BMitch TRUTH TRUTH TRUTH
<-- been "moderating" in one form or another since 1985
so when is the next nomination then ?
Probably a year from now. We just had one not too long ago.
18:38
is SE like Apple? people that work in the stores cant apply to corporate? SE moderators cant be real employees?
(not that i want to work for SE)
Why would Apple have such a policy? What purpose does it serve?
SE employees often have mod power
@ChrisCudmore actually, a few companies that i've known about have that policy
next election will likely be summer of 2013 at the earliest, they tend to go yearly, but base the number of positions on the demand
@lsiunsuex several mods have been hired
but usually they elect a new mod in their place. I'm unsure what happens to their modship if they move on from SE (presumably they get the offer of restoration if they leave on good terms)
18:40
@lsiunsuex But, to what end?
@ChrisCudmore trying to find the article
not sure if it was legal related or just some bullshit rule
If you thought you were worth more because of your hard-earned college degree, maybe you shouldn’t have applied for a sales position at a retail store.Regarding people who feel their isn’t enough of a springboard from Apple Retail into bigger and better positions, work harder towards where you want to go. You can’t expect the breadth of experience within a retail position to be great enough to qualify you to work at corporate campuses anywhere, really. Develop your skills outside of work.
so closer to being in retail gives you no leg up cause your apart of the company already than to go it outside of it
but still - a sales rep at a pharm company can become district manager - a salesman at apple retail has no path to corporate
@TheEvilGreebo w/d on both counts.
when sandy knocked out power last week I got worried about missing fanatic
but with generator and smart phone managed to keep active
19:12
@TheEvilGreebo gotta make sure the important stuff happens :)
they missed at least one...
@lsiunsuex my wife works at a college, there was some racially charged tweet bashing there the other day that one of her student workers was rather put out by...
ahh
so... which college does your wife work at?
possibly perhaps in a school of dentistry or medicine ? :)
19:21
@lsiunsuex the small private liberal arts school we both went to. No real med or dentistry degrees there :(
@lsiunsuex it's small (1000ish undergrads), it's mostly white, it's nearly entirely conservative protestants (you have to write a testimony as part of your admissions application) and it's mostly southerners. Not a good place for the few black students this week.
Thankfully it sounds like the student development office, the chaplain and his office and the two black professors there are all involved with coming up with a solution. Hopefully its a learning experience for the whole campus.
its f'ing 2012 - can we put color aside for a change?
wtf is wrong with people
@lsiunsuex exactly what my wife and I were saying to each other yesterday.
although honestly - i'm still surprised dude hasn't been assassinated
would have thought by now SOMEONE would have tried to get close

But unfortunately, even after ~150 years of no slavery, and coming up on 50 years of equality we're still struggling with the sins of our fathers.
@lsiunsuex guy shot up the east balcony
not mine :) i'm from italy haha - this is your problem
they didnt have slavery in italy like they did here
@lsiunsuex I'm a bit surprised myself, as much hateful bigoted rhetoric as is out there circulating...
@lsiunsuex I don't know enough about my family history to know if it's mine or not. But we're all paying the consequences whether we had direct involvement or not :(
i'll agree with that
by your i ment the usa - not u specifically
@lsiunsuex general u, yep
@waxeagle It's not just 150 years of no Slavery. It's not even fifty years since Kennedy and the Civil Rights movement.
You've got to wait for the entire generation to die off.
19:30
@ChrisCudmore agreed
@ChrisCudmore very true.
@ChrisCudmore I have a dream turns 50 next year, that's where my ~50 came from
And notwithstanding the official segregation, A black man had more rights in 1935 than he did in 1959.
Defacto rights, not official rights.
same reason buffalo still has a shit hole water front - all the people in power are from the generation that thinks kellogs will come back to the cerial silos they abandoned and the 5 wind turbines we have there are too much and not to put anymore
Toronto Abandoned it's port in the 70s. I think Redpath Sugar is the only company shipping in and out of Toronto.
There's also aggregates coming in.
does toronto have a nice water front?
honestly, every time we've gone there - never occurred to me that toronto was on the water front and to go there instead of the mall
19:40
@lsiunsuex :( nice modern waterfronts are a huge boon to cities these days. Chattanooga, OKC, San Antonio....
nevermind - the water front is down by where the indy car race is, right ?
Guayaquil
It's mostly condos now.
But there is some parkland. The industrial area is very small. It's more marina's and tourist stuff now.
restaurants and stuff or no ?
Lots of restaurants.
here - Streetview around. maps.google.com/…
I never could get into Dr. Who.
20:20
@waxeagle what is a "testimony" ?
@lsiunsuex yeah I did see the racist tweets - not that article you linked to, but a different one. It does sadden me, since people are clearly under the impression that this behavior is acceptable, and how can the cycle be broken?
@Aaron a personal "coming to faith" story
ok
blah, sorry @waxeagle has nothing to do with coming to faith - has to do with people waking up and realizing that if it looks like a human being, and talks like a human being then it probably is - for blacks, for jews, for women
never understood the whole women equality thing - i love women - they wanna work? let them work. they wanna vote? ok
when you bring faith into it, your bringing religion into it - religion is not to be kept out of discussions - its important to alot of people and most people (myself included) need to or like to beleive in something
but the government needs to be religion agnostic - it cannot believe in a religion - it must believe in all of them
@lsiunsuex no, I was asking him about something he said earlier, not about the racist tweets
ahh, sorry :)
just to finish - because it should believe in all of them, it can't believe in any of them - hence religion needing to be kept out of it. 2 cents anyways
20:29
@lsiunsuex I agree with you.
we were actually talking about this in one of the Christianity site chat rooms earlier today. Because of huffingtonpost.com/richard-stearns/… it's an article by a Christian about how all of the striving to get religious symbols up in public places is a severe distraction from what we're supposed to be doing (helping the poor and needy etc etc).
One of our users went as far as to call that stuff a perversion of the gospel and I agree.
20:47
So... Just had a visit from a GE service tech, who said appliances still trip GFCI's from time to time. Me: "I thought appliances and GFCI's were made better now, and the problem was gone?". GE Tech: "Whoever told you that, lied to you.".
@Tester101 nice.
I might believe that if the GFCI tripped every time the compressor kicked on, but since the problem is so sparatic I'm still not sure.
isn't the only thing GFCIs look at is the current in vs the current out?
Did you try replacing the gfci?
@Tester101 have you swapped out the GFCI?
20:51
Yes, twice.
@Tester101 why can't the fridge be on a non-GFCI outlet?
It's in the basement.
@Tester101 gotcha
I thought it was not a good idea to have fridges on GFCIs
isn't there a history of gfci having issues with devices with a motor?
20:52
@BMitch yes
inductive vs <something> load
That was the other thing. He said "Why don't you just use a regular receptacle?", to which I responded "um... Because the NEC says it has to be GFCI.".
"Oh, really?" he said. "Yeah, since like 2008." I said.
@Tester101 can an elevated outlet in a basement be non-GFCI? (says the guy with 2 GFCIs in his whole house)
@BMitch Yes, but I was under the impression that the problem had been solved.
@waxeagle They only have to be GFCI if they are added or replaced after the code was adopted.
But I just added it last year, when I bought the freezer.
@waxeagle I'm pretty sure it's all receptacles in the basement, i'd have to read the section again to be sure. I know in a garage they weren't required above a certain height, but I think that changed in 2011 or maybe 2008.
@Tester101 gotcha, our basement was re-done in '06 and none of the outlets are GFCI, but they are all at Chest height or so which makes me wonder (but then our bathrooms don't have them and I don't know why)
20:59
@waxeagle The height thing was like 7 or 8 feet, out of reach when standing on the floor.
I think they figured it would be safer if you were standing on a metal ladder.
@Tester101 sigh
@Tester101 lol
@waxeagle Also, don't forget. It's based on when the code was adopted in your area. In 06, it might have been acceptable in your area to install non-GFCI receptacles.
@Tester101 I'd be completely unsurprised if in my county it was still ok....
and I'm not sure they even had to have it inspected when the remodeled
@waxeagle You Canadian?
@Tester101 nah rural N GA
21:06
@waxeagle Mike Holt says GA adopted 2011 "effective 1/1/2012, with no amendments."
@ChrisCudmore You guys follow NEC north of the border, or do you have something better?
We're still NEC 2008 in NY. That's why I always quote from 2008.
Haha. D.C. is still 2005.
@Tester101 Figures, politicians in there can't agree on anything.
21:21
The local legislature in DC is all controlled by D
is that for finished or unfinished basements?
21:46
man
not to keep bringing up politics, but some people are seriously unhinged
21:56
I'm stopping at the Libertarian-Republican part, it makes no sense to me as a moderate libertarian. The Republican party keeps taking every attempt of a libertarian movement and claim it as their own. It may kill the movement and temporarily coopt some back into the party, but this election shows that they really aren't representing the country.
Compare the results for Obama, Romney, and Gary here: isidewith.com
</soapbox>
@Tester101 I'm not sure.
@BMitch I'd think the libertarian position would be pro-gay-marriage (or out of the marriage business altogether), Pro-Choice, and anti-abolition. Which is opposity of the Republican position.
This regulation adopts, by reference, the Canadian Electrical Code together with specific Ontario amendments and is referred to as the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (the OESC).
Which just raises another question. Is CEC based on NEC?
@ChrisCudmore exactly, when it comes to social issues, Obama isn't the anti-crist to a libertarian, and when it comes to fiscal issues, both parties are pushing for big government.
I'm with Oliver Wendell Holmes. "I like paying taxes. With them, I buy civilization"
@BMitch I finally got through all those questions and I came up 79 for Obama and 69 for Johnson
The Canadian Electrical Code is not equal to the National Electrical Code. This does not mean that the Canadian Code is inferior; in fact, the Canadian Electrical Code has many requirements not found in the NEC: for instance, requirements for Cathodic Protection, Automobile Heater receptacles and clearances for cable trays. However, some requirements found in the NEC and rigidly enforced in Alaska are simply missing from the 1993 CEC.
From an article for Canadians supplying camps in Alaska.
22:11
@Aaron You didn't have to take the quiz to see the map. The map was of the entire nation, and very few people side with Romney, but a large chunk does side with Johnson. It makes me question why we have the current two parties, the Republicans need to throw in the towel and let the Libertarians take over.
@Aaron Good God.
Ok, gotta get that final productivity push to call it a day. Have a good weekend folks! /waves
22:29
@BMitch because it's really easy to say 'less government intervention' until one finds out what it actually translates to
22:58
@Aaron just for clarification, I didn't mean to imply have the Libertarians take over the country, but to take over as a second option to the Democrats. No one wants to vote for a bunch of old white guys that believe in things like "legitimate rape" for good reason.
And I do call myself a moderate libertarian with a little L because I don't believe in cutting everything that the party hardliners want to cut.
