Q: How can I determine why my lights are flickering?

Raymond GrayI have a child at home who has learning difficulties. Sometimes she jumps up and down on the floor. Recently this has caused the downstairs living room light to flicker. Upstairs under the floorboards I found a connector block with the three wires from the living room light switch going in one...

"live testing was done with a screwdriver as I do not have a test meter.".
How do you test a circuit with a screwdriver? If you see sparks, it's live.

oh my giant astrophysical bodies...
@TheEvilGreebo - I finally had a chance to look at all the links you posted and have read them. I actually now agree with you, and am editing my answer accordingly. — pnongrata 10 hours ago

A: What is the proper way to clean a paintbrush and metal pan with KleanStrip paint thinner?

pnongrataIf it says "made with Mineral Spirits" its safe to dispose of however. This means its made from all-natural minerals; I usually just dump it out on the lawn to get it away from the house. Edit - please do not dump onto lawn or onto ground, as there are in deed aquifers above the bedrock layer t...

Q: What various considerations should I make when choosing a "green architecture" model?

BenjaminFollowing reactions to my prior question "Is there a comparative study of self-sustained and ecological housing?", which suggest there is no ready-made comprehensive comparative study of self-sufficient and ecologically sustainable architecture models, I probably will need to define a framework i...

too broad, not a real question
11:54
@TheEvilGreebo Have to tried wetting your ceiling to try and remove the stipple? You might have to score it to allow water to get under the paint.
Not yet but we will when we get to that point.
The real work starts late next week. Taking the last week of October off for this project.
Sanding it might not be the best idea, unless you have a respirator.
we have lead filtered masks
My wife is trained in lead abatement

@TheEvilGreebo, quick tip, [faq] is a shortcut to faq
good to know
redid the comment
I like any keyboard shortcut that saves me clicking and copying links. I went ahead and closed the question for being too broad.
13:01
i suppose asking a question on how to build a binder full of women would be off topic... ;)
Sounds like a hobby project
Belongs on relationships.SE
its a construction process tho
women are not building materials
They really should give the moderator an airhorn to keep the candidates from going over time or cutting her off. Mod: "We need to go to the next question..." Candidate: "But I just gotta say..." BEEEEEEEPPPPPP!!!!!! Mod: "No you don't"
13:17
@Tester101 Maybe a few passes with one of these might help?
In making binders full of women? EEEK!
You sick person!
Nah. With your ceiling. It's intended to perforate wallpaper, but would probably do a decent job breaking the paint layer.
@ChrisCudmore That's not nearly as funny.
14:01
@Tester101 Real quick because I'm about to leave for a couple hours, but ... It is MUCH faster when removing or thinking of skim coating over any texture to just remove the damned drywall and rehang it.
ASK ME HOW I KNOW
@KarlKatzke I agree. @TheEvilGreebo Doesn't want to rip the ceiling down.
130 sq. ft. - ~ 15 gallons of drywall compound.
i know it is but there's 2 feet of blown in insulation above that ceiling we don't want to have to mess w/ bagging, tossing and replacing later
we kicked the idea around some too
Depends on how much your time is worth to you, I guess. I would never do it again personally.
Even if it takes bagging the insulation and replacing it.
Ok, gotta go.
its a fair point
14:58
that was fun

Q: What is the allowable span of 2 stacked 6x6's?

MikeWe made a swing set out of 6x6 posts. The horizontal is two 6x6s, bolted together one on top of the other spanning 12'. Is this strong enough for 3 large kids to swing at same time?

1 hour later…
16:01
yawn
16:17
go back to bed, nothing here
16:46
I'm pretty sure that pole wasn't there when I drove in...
Man he must have been booking down the sidewalk to do that kind of damage
And he's completely blocking the handicap entrance.
HOW RUUD!
Pole: 1, Truck: 0, I didn't think those were that strong to be honest.
17:08
does epoxy resin really not stick to masking tape?
@BMitch aren't they usually reinforced concrete?
17:26
@BMitch The poles are strong, but remember that's in the front crumple zone of the vehicle.
Crumple zones - or: how to total your vehicle at 10 miles per hour! ;D
17:47
@waxeagle Yes, but when hit with enough force to wrap the bumper around, I figured it would have been knocked out of the ground, or bent over at an angle.
@BMitch you'd expect so, but crumple zones are a good point, doubting it was high speed.
When I was growing up, my carpool had an old station wagon with fake wood side panels and shiny metal bumpers. The front bumper had a small dent the size of a quarter. The street sign on the receiving end of that dent was completely taken out.
@BMitch they don't make em like they used to, that's for sure
But to be fair, street signs aren't designed to be a barrier. And I think you're half right about the crumple zone
My guess for that photo is 30-40 mph.
@TheEvilGreebo I think the epoxy is on the adhesive side of the tape, so you end up with sticky epoxy. Towards the end is a sanding step that cleans it up.
hmm
we have a dining table with leaves that, well, we hate. We saw an epoxy table top idea yesterday that got us thinking...
and I was wondering how we could do the leaves
we were thinking we could cut out the middle of the table and put in a layer beneath it, set old game boards, pieces, and such in the new space, then fill it with resin
and I was wondering how we could divide up the leaves... if the tape sticks a bit but can sand off that would work
17:58
There's always goofoff or other cleaners if it sticks.
Git 'er duuuuuuuuuunnnnnnn
@KarlKatzke that, sir, is a truck
sure doesn't look like a piece of crap
If you're going to go Texan, go whole (gas) hog.
@TheEvilGreebo Good from far, far from good.
Though the bed shows some sign of use, so that makes it real ;)
18:03
Previous owner was a cement contractor out in the sticks.
He only owned it for a year, though.
It's got a gooseneck and the proper braking and electrical add-ons.
So far, things that don't work: Driver's seat doesn't move back/forth, all the locks are busted, the driver's side door hinges are so worn that it doesn't close right unless you slam it at just the right angle.
Gooseneck ?
@TheEvilGreebo hitch in teh bed
Gooseneck = trailer that attaches to a ball in the bed of the truck over the axle like a Semi
@KarlKatzke you gonna be hauling horses?
ah
so you have to register/license that separately right?
18:06
The engine in the truck, though, is a 7.3 powerstroke ... same as an International 7.3 liter.
@waxeagle No, but I do live in horse country. My girlfriend's dad's trailers (plumbing contractor) are all goosenecks, and if I want to borrow one ...
@KarlKatzke gotcha. I'm starting to think I need a truck (who am I kidding, I need a truck).
but I'll be looking for a ranger or 150 or similar super light duty type thing
I've needed a truck for the past year, and I don't have space to store a trailer. So I bought the biggest truck I could get in my price range because I will have to bed-haul everything that I don't borrow one of the goosenecks for.
Bought it for $4500. It needs new tires in the back and new locks and it'll be ready to rumble.
@KarlKatzke nice, that's dirt cheap for a truck that big
specially if all you're buying is tires and locks
Yeah, well, and filters and 60 quarts of oil and by next summer a new A/C
@KarlKatzke good point :)
18:11
It doesn't leak oil but it's 16 quarts of oil per change.
@KarlKatzke yowsers
guess that's what you get for a deisel behemoth like that though
And anything else I magically find that's busted. I haven't been all the way through the electrical system to find any lights that are busted or not working.

A: How do I uninstall a receptacle when the wires are stuck?

PamThank you so much. This explained what was keeping the wire from coming out. A fork did not work for me but an eyeglass screwdriver did. I have never done anything like this but just decided to change my outlets out b/c they did not match.

should be turned into a comment
18:53
@Tester101 couldn't you turn that into a comment? Or does the poster have to do that?
@TheEvilGreebo only a mod can, a flag should get it done
Isn't Tester a mod by default with >20k rep ?
@TheEvilGreebo no, elected
and convert to comment is an elected mod only feature
19:01
Well I think deleting it was a bit abrupt
@TheEvilGreebo I made it a comment on this answer.

A: How do I uninstall a receptacle when the wires are stuck?

Jeff WidmerTo get the lock mechanism to release you will need to use a small tool (such as a small screw driver as in @Niall C's answer or even a utility knife or eyeglass screw driver as in @mohlsen's answer or my preference is a small diameter wood awl). The first tricky part is finding that tool that ...

@TheEvilGreebo it was converted to a comment on an answer
Was that not correct?
@Tester101 seems like what you should have done to me
OH
shit i missed that sorry
nvm just smack me
19:05
How much rep do you need to vote to close?
Ohh. 3000. Wow, that's a lot.
@Tester101 yeah it's kinda high, I think that's one of the bigger impact priv jumps from beta
500 -> 3000
very sad
5 yr old dies after crt tv on unstable stand falls on him
@TheEvilGreebo best reason ever to switch to flat panel :)
@waxeagle and mount it in drywall
very serious though. We actually had our 4 yr old pull a cabinet down on himself this weekend, thankfully he wasn't hurt, but I'll be putting a mounting screw in that on Friday
19:19
@waxeagle I always throw away the brackets that come with shelves, guess things change when you have kids.
@Tester101 definitely in our case the cabinet is a pantry and the kiddo gets his breakfast out of there. We're pretty sure he pulled too hard on the handle and it fell over. Thankfully its a light weight target build it yourself job so it wasn't heavy enough to hurt him
@Tester101 Yeah same here - but we don't have morons running around the house that we are genetically compelled to love, either.

So I just received a report that included the table of contents, in the table of contents. Just in case you're looking at the table of contents, and want to find the table of contents.
Stupid but not uncommon
Let me know if the index has a listing for the index
20:23
I am really digging the oscillating multi tool
20:43
@Aaron Doesn't it make you feel like a wizard when you cut drywall? "Look, I can make the mess disappear!"
Well, so far I've used it to cut 1x2s instead of dragging out the miter saw
I also used the rotary tool to sand off an edge on the bannister
