Yeah I'm torn.
On one hand, removing the default text helps.
But leaving it empty is kinda not much different
The best outcome is adding new relevant text. meta.stackexchange.com/questions/332006/…

Just the aussie i want to speak to, making an asumption here as I doubt you live on antarctica

heh. No I don't live down there - internet access is poor.

I want to speak mopre about that alt text since you still seem unsure of best procedure, but i came across an old answer of yours i was looking to edit .. but there was questions about it.

well we agree that the default text is kinda useless.

A: What's the 1 inch square knob sticking out of the wall?

CriggieA less likely possibility is that you're looking at the internal head of some foundation repairs, given this is inside a basement and therefore underground. An older building may have had extra work done to install reinforcing against quake damage or subsidence. The round part would be a load s...

YES. I just editted image text in this post.
notice I used ""? That makes screen reader skip it. sincwe the preceding text mentions the pictured item. naming the image is redundant

Good point - that's kinda poor description.
On the other hand, attribution and source of images is another separate matter for SE to deal with.
Its over-using the "description" field for separate purposes, and overloading something is generally bad too.
Is that edit better for a blind reader?

with the question, i did not name the item, i described the picture.
because i could be wrong. it might not be a clean out plug
in the answer "Its a clean out plug" having the reader then say again 'white PVC clean out plug' is redundant.
"" as image description or alt="" (raw html), tells software, 'skip this' the user does not need this'
oops i referenced your answer there. but i was talking about the question and first answer

"A circle of white plastic with a fine thread around the circumerence, A square boss protrudes from one side so the plug can be turned into a threadded bore. Looks flimsy, would not survive many installation cycles before threads are damaged and leak"

Okay i see what you did. i am looking at your changes

vs ""
Perhaps the default description text should be blank initially ?
that would be a bug-report, with explanation etc.

that is like overkill. its not necessary to describe in such detail.
shorter is usually better. imagine it being read to you. would you look over it that whole time it took to be read?
@Criggie the image descriptions would still need to be policed as I do now.
I considered asking about that. but it doesnt change the issue, its still images that arent described for screen reading software
as of yet i havent heard anyone complain that that use a screen reader and they cant tell what an image is.
but at least then we know we need to address it.
changing all default text to "" would cause more problems i think\
In that post you described the images fine. In which case the alt description isnt neceassry. i wondered why the link was placed there.. and i questioned the use of imagery that named something as 'stock photography'

yeah the difference, is I'm not blind, so I'd look at the photo and never need the alt text.
So its really hard to put onesself in that place and imagine what the most useful info is.
If you can't see an item, and you can't explore it by touch, then a description is all that's left.

instead of he image source as he alt text, a description like "reinforced metal plate affixed to brick wall with threaded rod and hexnut" or "decorative iron plate shaped like a gear affixed to wall... .. rod and hexnut
well often it is not overly important to describe something in great detail, unless specifically asked.
anyway i thought your answer needed editing, and wanted you to give it a go before i did anything
@manassehkatz-Moving 2 Codidact Was a contrasting background that offensive?
@manassehkatz-Moving 2 Codidact also placing descriptive text that names the item in the image when the above text already named it is redundant. that is why "" is used. it tells screen reader software to skip over the image
