How common is it for a new house to be built with a subpanel?

12 hours later…
13:03
@JayBazuzi Do you mean the main service panel will be somewhere else, or that the house will be built with a main and sub panel?

Is there a doctor in the house!?

Q: How can you rid your house of 'Sick Building Syndrome'?

Jim G.It's a rite of passage - You and your spouse are expecting, and it's your responsibility to paint the baby's room. But before you do so, make sure that you use only latex/low VOC paint, keep the room well-ventilated for at least a few days, and try to keep the pregnant mother away from the room ...

I thought about downvoting that question, but my wife has similar symptoms pretty much any time I do anything around the house (she's allergic to everything) - so I'm halfheartedly hoping someone comes up with an answer other than air filters.
@SteveJackson How about a trip to Hawaii for the wife, while you stay home and work.
@Tester101 I see she has you on the payroll :)
@SteveJackson Or pick up one of these for her.
I bought her a whole package of dust masks, she won't wear them, even when she helps out :(
Or one of these

Who's ready for some camping?

Welcome to Project Update Thursday!
Unfortunately, your host (me) is swamped! :O
@Aarthi Install a French drain!
Also, pencils received. Thank you
Not a problem. :D Glad you got them safely. :D
@NiallC lololol nice! :P
@Tester101: I mean if the house has a main + a sub at the outset. My impression is that there's usually one panel per building, but I wonder if that's ideal.
I wanted to paste in some AWESOME traffic stats, too, while I'm here.
@JayBazuzi welcome to Project Update Thursday! :D
OK, my last project was a woodstove installation in the yurt. My first ever woodstove, my first ever concrete pour, and my wife's first ever tile work.
Because the yurt is a soft structure, the chimney is attached to a pair of posts (20' x 4" x 4")
20:04
:O
@JayBazuzi I think it's mostly a local custom kind of thing, most people don't want to search with more than one breaker box when the lights go out. I've seen a sub right next to a main when an addition is added for instance.
@JayBazuzi I thought the chimney was a nice piece of work :)
@Aarthi So what happened in August anyway? Was that the tree question?
@SteveJackson That was our YHL feature.
@Aarthi Very cool. Yeah the tree question was June. Pretty impressive doubling up the traffic in 5 months, right?
YES.
I'm so proud, y'all have no idea. sniffle
@SteveJackson: I was thinking that a subpanel to the kitchen might be a good idea, since there are so many circuits to one location; you could use a lot less copper while reducing voltage drop. (This isn't a real question, it's just a thought experiment)
20:17
@JayBazuzi Yeah, a subpanel is often a consideration with kitchen additions for that reason. I'd probably call up a local house inspector and see if the sub would be too strange for your area. Copper prices are making people think up some unorthadox things, you might be on the leading edge on this one.
@JayBazuzi @SteveJackson I'd like to see the math on this one. how many cables, and how far away would it have to be to justify the cost of another panel?
I don't know off the top of my head, but I'm putting it on trello as a blog idea. Could be fun to do the research and figure it out.
I'm guessing as cheap as contractors usually are, if there were savings to be had it would be a common practice.
20:35
If your main panel is already next to the kitchen, it's not worth it, but if your service entrance is on the other side of the house....
So I hung my Christmas lights last weekend, using the hooks I mentioned in this answer.

A: What's the best way to attach a hook to the back of my metal gutters?

Tester101They sell clips like this at the Home Depot, which can either clip under your singles or to the gutters. Not sure how well they work yet, I picked up a box and plan on giving them a try this year.

And they worked out great.
If you loook at the wiring for an electric stove and then go up 2 sizes, that's now enough for the whole kitchen (probably - need to do math).
I installed the hooks on the gutter backwards from how they're shown on the package, but I think they worked out better that way.
And then your blender gets to sit on that fat copper wire and have minimal voltage drop, making the blender last longer and run faster.
All the lights are pointed downward at the same angle, instead of pointing up like in the picture.
Forgot to take a picture, but it turned out really nice.
These clips get 4 out of 5 captain constructions (provided they last through the winter without falling off).
20:40
The two review posts are both top 10 for google searches I've done. Need to write some more.
@Tester101 psst..."under your singles "?
I did them the right way when I had to clip under the shingles, but I clipped the lights in so they pointed down like the ones on the gutters.
I also used larger bulbs than the ones in the picture.
I have no project updates. However I do have a project idea for those that live where it snows.
hahaha
no projects here either; i'm all Community Team right now, for better or for worse
21:17
@Tester101 (and everyone else too) what do you think of this answer diy.stackexchange.com/a/10695 ? It's the same link as the deleted-as-spam answer on that question
enh
If the site is useful, I'd be ok with it
@NiallC Sounds like they really want to sell some plans to me. This is a tough one, since as @Aaron points out the site might be useful.

That has spam written all over it, uggh.
@SteveJackson: do you have some examples of unorthodox things that people are doing to save on copper? Curious.
@JayBazuzi stealing it from their neighbors!
@JayBazuzi, we've been told multiple times by contractors/landscapers etc at our (new to us ) house that if we ever get our gutters replaced, make sure that they pay us for the copper
21:40
:O
@ChrisCudmore Hmmm. I think that's the answer to all the "How do I get a ground wire" questions. Brilliant!
grounded to a bucket of dirt?
Portable ground!
@JayBazuzi Hearing stories here and there of people using aluminum wire for big amp stuff (and not always being aware of the limitations). In addition there's some work being done with conductors on circuit boards to replace copper.
I'm sure it's already grounded to the catwalk.
21:41
Someone secure the patent! DIY.SE will be rich!
@JayBazuzi dailytech.com/…
Pay off the venture capital.
hahahaha
By the way.

Q: Help create DIY holiday gift list

Tester101We're trying to create a "wish list" for DIY holiday gifts for a blog entry, and we need your help. We're looking for gifts that are useful, interesting, and would appeal to DIYers. Since Christmas is just around the corner, all suggestions should be submitted by Monday, December 19, 2011 so th...

Still looking for gift ideas.
And be sure to vote up the ones that are already there.

Thanks for joining us for Project Update Thursday
Ah man I just missed it.
@Aarthi If you have something else to add I can create another bookmark :)
nope i was just gonna close it
seems like we're quiet here at the end of the year
i feel kinda bad; my new job reqs mean i'm spending less time here :(
Yep. People busy, no time for projects.
Oh...and of course...the life of the party has abandoned us ;)
;___;
22:08
awww.... pat pat would you prefer we didn't miss you?
something in between?
that i was missed but that the site powered on regardless

@Aarthi The site is fine, just chat is less chatty. Your shoes are big to fill - after all you are a social community building expert who doubles traffic and whatnot. The fact that we manage this much chat with 29 users (ALL-TIME) seems noteworthy.
@SteveJackson <3 you're too nice to me.
